Just saw a moose climb a tree to get away from a hunter. The hunter just stood at the base of the tree shooting up at the moose while her hunting dogs went up into the tree after it. Eventually the moose fell off the tree and the fall drove one of its ribs through its heart.

These trees are wonky as shit.

On a semi-related note, has anyone here ever had their town attacked by beastmen? A whole pack of them just stormed into the village. It was terrifying.

Human female (pic related is description) almost in full plate armor with chain leggings and several weapons strapped onto her specifically a shield, longsword, shortsword, dagger, and a pike. Feel free to take artistic liberties though

She's slumped against a wall with a busted knee. She's desperately swinging a 2 handed sword at goblins and/or trolls and/or beak dogs as they advance.

Maybe her dead companions (also armored human females, one had a silver maul) laying beside her or headless goblins laying around.

She hates them. I like to imagine it kind of as a bruce wayne and bats situation; using the thing she fears as a symbol to strike fear and platinum in the hearts of her foes. That could explain the images of midnight men and the FB as well. The tigerfish is harder to explain, but we are on a huge lake, and they have big fucking teeth, so I guess it works too.
An alternative explanation is that the mayor, who made the mace while possessed by unknown forces, wanted to take a passive aggressive shot at his boss. But I like the other explanation better.
>>
Does anyone try to keep all their dwarves as focused as possible at all times? Does anyone have anything resembling success in such an endeavor?
>>
So, I have a question that is quite stupid, but I feel I should clarify:

What exactly IS stored in a save game?
I'm asking because apparently a save can have issues if you're loading it up with a different tileset than last time, unless the raws in the save itself are updated, so what is the full extent of this?
Does it store stuff like creatures and objects, or do those get loaded from the game's inner library, and the save is just a flag for what is where like with most games?

Basically what I'm asking is: Since each save contains its own raws, does this mean that if I have a modded-in item or something of the sort, then the save will retain it even without the mod?

It's impossible with some dwarves. Dwarves with no family or friends who have a need for those things, no access to their favorite foods, etc. Also dwarves won't actively seek out activities that will satisfy some needs, like the need to argue or the need to wander, even when they have free time. They also won't try to acquire items they like, they have to haul something they like by happenstance to decide to keep it. It's pretty much a matter of luck for any given dwarf whether or not it will even be possible to keep them focused.

Each save has a raw folder with graphics and objects.

Some of the files in the objects folder can be changed without screwing anything up, some will crash the game right away, some will only crash if the game tries to load the items or creatures or materials referenced in that file.

Graphics folders can be swapped freely, but may require raws to be updated if they change the tiles for various stuff displayed on screen.

Tilesets themselves are plug and play, they're in the df/data/art folder, while saves are in their own df/data/save/region# directories.

The last flatlands fort I built was some time ago and it ended in a very fun way so I can't pop up a picture just now, but generally I do it like this:

13x13 channel
11x12 channel (basically an 11x11 inside the bigger one, but with one extra line in the direction I want the entrance to go in)
9x11 channel (similarily, make sure one end of the short side is directly under one of the sides of the original square on top)
7x10 channel
2 or 3 more levels, but not narrowing it any further, leaving it 7 wide until I feel I'm deep enough, and making a 3 wide entrance.

Later it's easy to install a bridge that you can raise as a door to block the entrance as well as grates to a shallow pool bellow, and then install floodgates above the entrance to fill the entire thing up as desired.

Best part, you can then have the shallow pool drained by a pump that dumps the water or yummy magma you used to casually re-open for business.

For maximum happy happy joy joy time, make sure that whatever lever raises the bridge and unlocks the flood gates, also rocks a set of doors on a wall surrounding this hot mess of a pit entrance, so that you can deep fry an invading army with your magma.

If he's assigned to a squad there could be an equipment conflict: that might be his axe for fighting rather than his axe for chopping trees. By the way, training axes can't chop trees anymore.
>>
Everyone in my fort loses their goddamn mind whenever a kingsnake shows up. Their corpses litter the cliff face. This one is making a really good show of it, having survived blows from a steel great axe, a steel spear, and a masterwork aadamantine great axe.
>>
>>152548407
Nah, it turned out to be because it was on an edge tile. I knew you couldn't dig out an edge tile, didn't know you couldn't chop a tree down on one. Should've thought of that anyway. Thanks though.
>>

Actually something's still not right, because I had to turn on woodcutting on a peasant to get any tree to be chopped down. My main woodcutter is still being useless, and he's not in a squad.

If I have a weak adventurer, and retire him and make a strong one, one that the weak one could not recruit with his current stats, and then have the strong one recruit the weak one, retire him, and then unretire and play as the weak one, would the strong one be my companion?
>>

Things get weird when you do that, if you REALLY want the weak one to get the strong friend, dance or recite a poem or something to impress them, then ask them to join you as an entertainer, later when you get some impressive kills or bandit robberies stopped you can recruit them to adventure normally if you want.

>>152553791
I personally like Succubi. Fort mode has a neat gimmick where you can turn prisoners into specialized demons depending in race. Elves are turned into Cambion marksmen, humans become Devils with buffed social skills, Orcs are made into Oni warmachines, dwarves into infernal Fiend smiths, Kobolds become stealthy Imps, and goblins become whip-toting Hellions.

Its really useful to have all these specialized demons working for you. In addition, you can summon up some members of the circus, although that's a bit buggy so expect it to go horribly.

Adventure mode-wise, Succubi are ok but you'd be better off specializing in a certain species. Cambion Marksmen and Oni fighters are pretty devastating. Plus later on you will be able to convert NPCs into demons in adventure mode and I'm hyped for that.
>>

>>
>>152554260
They got taken out to be reconfigured but I'd expect them to return soon. Atm the playable species are Humans, Dorfs, Orcs, Succubi, Kobolds, and a special Hermit mode where you only get one guy and try to keep him alive in the wild.
>>
>>152554397

How about orcs? Do they still play pretty similar?
>>
>>152554276
I think people don't like it because of the scummy dev and his tendency to beg for donations, thus "stealing" money from Toady. I just don't donate and its fine. I like the mod for all the variety it adds. As a person who plays adventure mode a lot, the crazy variety is greatly appreciated.

>>152554518
Basically Orcs are for players who want their entire fort to be an army. Its super easy to train and equip your dudes in Orc mode, but they tend to suffer in more intellectual pursuits.

Is it just me or is adventure mode combat always decided in a single hit?
>>
>>152555321
I don't consider it to be decided in a single hit. One of the most memorable battles I've had, in the most memorable world I had (demons escaping from a goblin dark fortress en masse, which I have never seen before or since) was in a world with a stupid amount of night trolls. I didn't see it as I was walking away from a row of night troll dens and it went up and fucked me up so badly I lost use of all my limbs. I had to roll away, biting and scratching a fucking night troll to kill it. I wound up biting into his neck and tearing off his head.

And yes, the majority of my well off chars die of inescapable bite-locks.
>>
>>152555479
Fair enough point, I guess I'm just used to getting fisted with my own gauntlets by whatever cripples the use of my hands.

There was one time when I somehow managed to fuck up like 3 bandit shitters (maybe goblin warparty? it was a while ago) and start crawling away before I suffocated from a collapsed neck/throat/spine

This necropolis has a pretty neat spatial arrangement. i wonder who's buried in the northernmost one.

Btw, I'm the anon who lost his 94 dorf fort yesterday. I'm training my adventurer to become the first militia commander when I reclaim, so I better stay away from those mummies(or just use the save and load trick to make them go up in smoke).

To get my ultimate revenge on these goblins, however, I hope to find the vault and steal their demon.

I'd like to see any of those wimps fight off the undead and go on a three person crusade against the nearby dark fortress, killing 584 in one season. Then those dirty goblin fuckers can judge me.

It's gonna be tricky, since I forgot to export the legends before I started , and don't have dfhack. I'm just gonna need to find the vault the hard way. (or perhaps I'll just dupe the saves and retire)

In any case, I just thoroughly explored all the tombs, and used the traps to train my observer. I didn't bother with the mummies.
>>
>>152560441
Well, being a vampire would help. Vampirism is the GOAT start due to not actually giving a lack of trainability, and protects vs mummy rape.

If you want a good reason to retire so you can view legends mode, retire at an elven community so you can join the civilization of the elves, who are wise and should become our overlords, and gain the peace with wildlife thing so you don't get annoying random bear encounters etc.

The thing is that the gobbo civ has laid ruin to all the other civs.

When I started my fort, it was one of two non-goblin sites left in the world. Now that my fort has fallen, there's only one fort left.

All humans and elves in the world are either dead or goblified.
>>
>>152561576
Ouch. In mine, dorfs are almost gone (reclaim squad is all that's left), but elves and humans are better off than they are in most of my worlds, as elves are basically "if good reason" (except on cannibalism/nature stuff) and humans are basically "if properly sanctioned" (except on cannibalism stuff).

Knowing that there'd be some war either way, I set it so they'd mostly just wanna fight with me.

My world is not as attractive as yours, but all I wanted was extinct dorf civ + good forest with a river with a northern evil glacier.

I see. I guess it's best to wait until you're necro before fucking with the mummies.

Though to be honest, it's pretty strange that killing mummies makes your civ consider you a hero. I mean, you kinda intruded on a sacred place which is probably off limits according to civ law, and the mummy attacked just because you disturbed. Despite the mummy also being the legendary king who saved the civ all those years ago, people will praise you for disturbing his sleep and killing him once again.

all on one z-level because I hadn't figured out stairs/ramps yet, mostly undefended because I couldn't make sense of the military screens, and without a proper hospital
I also had a nice but somewhat cramped statue garden, which turned into a major liability when a dwarf who'd seen one of his buddies killed by something (small goblin attack maybe, or just wildlife, can't remember) threw a tantrum in the middle of a 20-odd-dwarf party, starting a mass brawl and then predictably a tantrum spiral

many deaths later and after the destruction of most of my buildings and workshops, things finally calmed down. one badly-injured dwarf had been taken to my """hospital""" (just a bed in a room) and was slowly bleeding out, gradually getting "attached to" and naming each of his ragged bits of clothing that had (presumably) saved him from dying outright in the brawl
eventually though he did die (probably of infection, I didn't know how to tell), and when the first 3-4 dwarves who saw him all started tantruming, it was pretty much over

and yes that was my second fort, my first one lasted about 5 days and was very wet, as you suggested

well, you can try building walls to block it off, ideally with a material that's light and nearby so it can be done quickly
if there's a little bit of water dwarves will cancel the job, but until the water gets too deep, you can keep un-suspending it and they'll eventually build it
you could try getting some pumps running on the surface to divert the water somewhere else too, but those take a little time to set up if you don't have the parts on hand

Alright lads I've decided to finally start a fortress with a few challenges that other suggested to me. I decided to do all at once
>no eating anything besides meat
>no farming
>Settle in a cavern
>Can only construct walls out of soap
Anyone want to add to the list? I'm considering embarking in a terrifying biome next to a goblin fortress. Necromancer Towers are a no fighting back kind of fun so I won't do that and I also changed the creature tokens so that Dwarves will eat sapient creatures.
>>
>Map has every single ore in the universe EXCEPT iron and tin
>Every single migrant wave has been 33%-50% children
>This asshole decides to show up
There's got to be a way to use the children as bait so I can abuse this guy for my cloth industry, right?

Giant cave spiders have a really high value in webs. Forgotten Beasts have the same value in webs as a common spider.
>>
>>152583545
Yeah but what the fuck else am I going to do with a webspitting FB that I will never be able to kill?
>>
>>152583968
Weaponize it. Get some giant cave spider and make it spew web over cages. Then take the webbed cages and catch it and than isolate it in a path that other beast or goblins will have to take
>>
>>152584304
Webspitting FBs are [WEBIMMUNE], just like anything else with webspitting.
>>
>>152571142
my first fortress ended with all my dwarves dead from dehydration
>dig into hill
>make all-purpose stockpile
>go down a level
>dig out meeting area
>try to figure out how stairs work
>remove stairs by accident
>all dwarves get trapped in meeting area without picks, food or drink with no escape
>>
>>152584384
Use it butcher children. Make a room and burrow your children there and then open the room up to the beast and watch your children problem disappear. If you have a way to close up the room afterwards you have now caught the beast and use him for future troubles.
>>
>>152583357
dig out a room near the cavern with 2 drawbridge airlocks, one on each side. Call it Room A. Carve out another chamber sharing a wall with Room A, call it Room B.

Carve fortifications into the wall between A and B. Build another drawbridge in B next to the fortifications, such that it can be raised to obscure los between A and B. Burrow one of the kids in B within los of A through the fortifications.

Build a workshop or other destructible building in A, then open the external airlock and dig through A to the caverns. Evacuate the miner and close the internal airlock. When the beast comes to destroy the building, close the external airlock. Now the beast will see the kid through the fortifications and spray webbing at them. When you want to collect the webs without dwarves fleeing in terror, raise the drawbridge in room B.
>>
>>152584571
Awesome, thanks. I'll see if I can pull it off.

I could swear FB webs were worth more than regular webbing, but another way is if you can get it lured into a room with a bridge you can raise to trap it then you can just smooth/carve fortifications/cover them with a bridge or whatever to trigger/conceal it.

So one of the areas in my world is a tiny scorching island, covered entirely in red sand.
Seems like a cool place to start a themed fortress, perhaps with the embark consisting entirely of fugitives or the crew of a sunken ship? All the sand could also mean a thriving glass industry...
Any tips on how to embark in such a location?
>>
So I'm about to start my fortress in a a tundra biome and I'm bringing a hunter but should i bring some animals? I wonder if the cavern has enough food to satisfy dwarves
>>
>>152590880
Bring a lot of wood, and don't use anything that requires fuel until you find the magma sea.
Also, since you're on an island you won't get any caravans or sieges or anything, so it's likely to be an extremely dull embark.
>>
>>152591424
>implying anyone gets good sieges anymore
Unless it's near a necromancy tower than he'd probably be safe from serious sieges till fps death set in.
>>
>>152591656
True, but caravans are still nice. They give you a reason to make crafts and shit, because otherwise there's no reason to worry about value except to satisfy nobles.
>>
>>152591656
Stop meming.

The army travel bug was partially fixed as of 0.42, and we now have armies of several hundreds of enemies, all wearing full armour, laying siege to our forts. If you're not getting the sieges, you're either embarking too far from the gobs, or the gobs are too weak to send them.
>>
Don't die on me /dfg/!
I need design choices for my new fort. Specifically room design for dorf housing.
>>
>>152594630
Depends on what you want. I usually roll with apartment blocks: same small rooms repeated as necessary.
>>
>>152594630
One entire z-level per dwarf.
>>
>>152591424
> you won't get any caravans or sieges or anything
this is why I'd like to build some glass megaproject there. I'm thinking a giant pyramid, or a tower
Any ideas on how to roleplay fugitives or the crew of a ship? I can't emagine anyone else trying to make it on a desert island (except for maybe some weird cult)
>>
>>152595234
Fuck that. Dorfs have to EARN awesome accommodations. If he wants an entire Z level to fuck around in, he better do something amazing.
>>
>>152594630
I usually go for the commieblock method, pictured here
>>152581762
>3x3 rooms
>Bed, cabinet and chest made of wood
>Door, table and chair made of stone
>Eventually smooth and engrave everything
>Every single dwarf in your fortress now has a "great" bedroom and all it cost was 3 wood, 3 stone and ~2 years of training your engravers(Assuming you start them all from scratch)
If you set up a block of 50 immediately on embark, you can usually complete it by late winter, assuming 1 carpenter and 2 masons. With another block of 50 you'll hit the population cap after factoring in married couples and nobles who need real houses.
>>
Whats the best tileset and why is it Spacefox?
>>
>>152596406
3x3 is a lot for peasants. I was always a fan of the 1x3 rooms to save space.
>>
>>152596524
It's the minimum size in order to fit every type of furniture in their room. Also, it's square and makes your housing district look nicer.

Plus, back when there was actually a mood system, it kept dwarves so happy that it was almost impossible for them to tantrum. Now that tantrums have been removed from the game that doesn't matter anymore, but still.

>>152596524
You are both wrong.

2x2 is the ultimate size for bedrooms. It will have enough room for the bed and cabinet, and the two empty tiles will improve the aesthetics. If I want to put in a window, it will line up perfectly with the door, and nether the door nor the window will be "blocked"(visually) by the two pieces of furniture.

Pic related. It's from one of my favourite forts, and now that I think of it, I remember that I recently tossed the world away. I should restore it before I accidentally remove it forever.
>>
>>152592746
You still get caravans from your home civ on an island. As long as you have 1 tile of pathable ground on the map edge you'll get your own civ's caravan.
>>
>>152596862
>>152597167
They haven't, but they are far rarer than they used to be, and they don't cause spirals like they used to. The only penalties from having a tantrum is the physical damage caused.
>>
>>152597167
They haven't been. Intoxication is just very strong right now and negates the effects of most negative thoughts.

>>
>>152597167
It's a bug with the number tuning.
The numbers required to trigger a tantrum are in the 6 digits, whereas mood modifiers are usually in the double digits. Watching your spouse get raped, mutilated and eaten by a forgotten beast may give you +120 stress, but it doesn't mean shit all when it takes 120000 stress to start feeling upset and 600000 stress to tantrum.

>>152597386
It's not even alcohol. You can run a fort entirely on water alone for 10 years and still not suffer any negative effects from bad thoughts.
>>
>>152597857
>Watching your spouse get raped, mutilated and eaten by a forgotten beast may give you +120 stress, but it doesn't mean shit all when it takes 120000 stress to start feeling upset and 600000 stress to tantrum.

This seems like a perfect fit for Dwarf Fortress.
>wife gets raped mutilated and eaten by a forgotten beast
>Urist shrugs and heads to the dining hall to Attend Party
>>
>>152597857
The stress values haven't changed from .40, and you could still easily get tantrums then if you ran your fort poorly. Intoxication has wiped out the malus of most the thoughts that could cause a tantrum. That's the difference post-.42.
>>
>>152598759
Intoxication is not the problem though. You can delete the syndrome from the raws or run your fortress without any alcohol at all, but still never have any tantrums at all.
The problem is the stress system, and it's been present since the day it was added to the game and the old thought system was removed.

>have 61 dwarves
>goblin siege arrives
>isolate dwarves to panic burrow, which is also my farming area and my cloth area
>none of them fucking go
>12 goblins wipe out my entire fortress because not a single dwarf will do anything except fucking stand there and get murdered
>some of them even had weapon skills and were armed and wouldn't even fight back
>of the 17 survivors, only 1 was a farmer, meaning that all 12 dwarves in my cloth industry and 5 of my farmers LEFT the panic burrow in order to get killed
I don't want to give up on my fortress, but I also want every single fucktard who died in this siege to stay dead.
The panic burrow wasn't even that far away or anything. Over half of my fortress was just sitting in my tavern, which is three tiles away from the burrow.
The only dwarf who had any excuse to not reach the burrow was my carpenter, who was on the other side of the map cutting trees when he spotted the goblins. He was also one of the only dwarves who actually made it to the burrow.
>>
>>152600930
The stress system works fine, dwarves could still tantrum after the thought rewrite. It happened considerably less than before by design, dwarves were neurotic messes in previous versions. Then intoxication-by-syndrome came along with nothing to balance it against, and now tantrums are rarer than diamonds. They are still technically possible. But any fort run so poorly that a tantrum might occur is more likely to just crumble.
>>
>>152593408
how would i know if the goblins are too weak? I've been embarking next to fortresses with 2k+ goblins for the past year and only one of my fortresses was attacked by 2 sieges of around a dozen recruit goblins.

>But any fort run so poorly that a tantrum might occur is more likely to just crumble
You're hurting my feelings, anon. I've had several dorfs tantrum since 0.42, yet my forts are coming along pretty good. Most of the time, it's because they have some impossible need that turns into an increasingly bad thought over time.
>>
Hey guys I got a start not near any cliffs. Can I just make a fortress with walls in the middle of a field? Can I use wooden walls?

Then I load up legends viewer and laugh at all the times the elves try to pick fights with the orcsthanks to KILL_PLANT:ACCEPTABLE, MAKE_TROPHY_ANIMAL:ACCEPTABLE and LYING:PERSONAL_MATTER and then get fucked over because the orcs have access to steel, are 30% bigger than humans and have extremely high physical stats.
The curious thing is that the orcs almost never start wars, but they almost always win them whenever goblins or elves try to fuck with them.

I greatly hope they will be allowed to have equipment lists and such like other entities, as the closest equivalent (performer troupes) have nothing in that department, so people raised solely in the performer troupes just grow up to be nudist barbarians like outsiders.

Yeah, it sounds like they will go around adventuring and finding artifacts/returning them, among other things.

They've got nothing on these guys though.

If your ores are in a stockpile which gives to something else they might not count as being available to your smelter.

I like linked stockpiles, but they don't work as well as I'd like, most especially the fact that some of their limitations are rather opaque.

Oh, and bins cause everything in them to be unavailable for as long as any active or queued task involves the bin or anything in it in any way. I really wish Toady would fix that.

>manage to choke him out as all his buddies run away
>run away before more goblins attack
>walking to the next hamlet because fuck that one
>ambushed by a human lasher
>hands work again, steal his whip and shield before beating him to death
>get to mead hall, find a bronze 2 handed sword and nice iron shield, still no worthwhile armor

>walking through hamlet looking for sack of berries and well since hungry/thirsty
>fucking crossbowman ambushes
>shoots me in the leg right off the bat

Either I've just gotten better at the game or I've been really lucky since normally I've been raped by less than this in the past prior to training. I hope one of these mead halls have some iron armor since I know I'll die if I fight 2+ units.

It's because of goblin performers visiting the mead hall. When they do so off-site or in worldgen, it works out alright, but as soon as the site is loaded, the goblins' [ETHIC:KILL_NEUTRAL:REQUIRED] makes them go full jihad on any people they see that don't belong to their civ.

If it bothers you, you can give them [ETHIC:KILL_NEUTRAL:PERSONAL_MATTER]. It fits them better, but it will sadly also stop goblin soldiers from attacking you when you raid their sites.

You have to go back to 0.34.

0.34 works alright as a typical rpg. It also makes maxed out human cities WITHOUT making your game lag. Sadly, there are no non-human sites, and you also miss out on a lot of other great features, like jumping, climbing, gaits, "realtime" combat, et cetera.

>>152656945
I don't think it's a performance issue. If it was, this would also affect the speed of the animated green arrows, which it doesn't.

Rather, I think the "lag" is the result of every creature's turn being shown individually, while they'd just do them all at the same time in the odler versions.

You're basically waiting for every single creature on the map to finish their turn. That's why faster gaits mean less site lag.
>>
>>152657065
oooh I see.

Goblins are basically green, beardless dorfs. They're alright. They have civilisation.

Humans are barbarians who live in earthern-floor huts. They are also the only civ to ever practice slavery in vanilla(due to their randomised ethics. and NO, gobbo prisoners are not the same thing as slaves).

Whoa hold up there my bearded friend. We may have slaves, but at least we don't kidnap your children and brainwash them into bloodthirsty creatures loyal only to the green men. You have that forge and it serves you well, wouldn't you treat it right to ensure it keeps working rather than neglect it to the point of failure. I bet you loved our last trade caravan full of top notch goods that were made possible by our slaves.

And hey, do you really want to be buddies with a culture who thinks it is okay to eat each other? What happens when they decide to have a nice bit of dwarf steak should one of your brothers fall in battle?

And that isn't even mentioning that they are the pawns of demon hellspawn. Do you really think they would stand shoulder to shoulder with you should the gates of hell swing open? I think not! They would either flee in terror like the spineless dogs that they are or kneel on the spot to please their new master.

Has anyone tried making a new fort from a dead civilization? Is it practical? (I suppose you have to wait for natural population growth rather than immigration?)

>their culture is different from ours, so they must die
Literally the only reason that wars occur in worldgen.

Also, it's interesting that gobbos almost never start any wars by themselves. Instead, other civs march upon them due to moralfagging, only to get utterly destroyed by the goblins. Really makes you think, huh?

>I suppose you have to wait for natural population growth rather than immigration

nigga, let me educate you on genetics
If your civ is dead, when making a new fort you automatically have seven genetically-close dwarves, because they supposedelly come from the same civ.
So, you already have people that would almost resort to endogamia to breed, add then the only two migrant waves you'll have, because they are hard-coded, lets say between 10-30 migrants
Let's just say that if Toady had already implemented proper genetics/illneses, with only 30 people from the same gene pool breeding, you would almost surely have only retarded babies in the next generation

Your best bet is to create custom dwarven adventurers with diferent traits and retire them at your fort, that way you offer genetical diversity to your fort (ex: not everybody is a fucking weak blue-blooded piece of shit), and already have a new worker without having to wait 12 fucking years for him

Most houses in human sites will have bags of food that are legal to take with you(not that stealing is a big deal in the current version).

Nope. Getting a good rep will get you discounts or even free booze from the taverns, but this doesn't really matter, since there currently isn't any way to pay your debts, anyway. Also, taverns only serve booze at the moment.

If you want immersion, I recommend picking up loot when you fulfill hearthsperson agreements, and exchange it for food when you return to the city. If your agreement was about beast hunting, you can just make bone crafts out of the beast to trade with.

Wasps eat spiders though. For most types of wasp it's their primary food source, and for some it's their ONLY food source. The surest way to attract wasps to your lawn is to have lots of decaying wooden stuff that attracts spiders and gives wasps a place to nest.

In fact that's one of the biggest reasons why you should never get a wooden fence. Not only are they overpriced and have to be replaced every two years, but they're also a magnet for wasps and spiders.

I guess. Sometimes I pity Toady since he doesn't have a girlfriend or spouse or children and I will have children soon enough. From a purely biological point of view, he's a failure since he didn't spread his genes (yet). I also envy him though, he's creating something far greater than him and far greater than me or anything I could create while doing what he loves. Maybe his creation will live centuries more than my offspring or lineage can ever live, he could become the DaVinci of video games.
>>
>>152700574
If you don't have any particular interest in women, then being single isn't exactly a failure.
>>
>>152700838
That's where the "purely biological point of view" comes into play. There's a 200 thousand years old homo sapiens lineage that ends in you, not procreating is basically failing all those that came before you. The inherent purpose of an organism is to survive and procreate, you will not survive forever so you need at least to procreate.
I guess he is interested in women, everyone is. Unless he's gay.
>>
>>152700218
Yeah, that's what I mean by his situation... being pretty much free to work on what he wants at his own pace, plus getting funded to do it via donations is a very lucky thing.

Motivation-wise I remember him mentioning a few times that he works on side-projects every so often, but the ideas he puts in tend to end up in DF in some way.
It's possible that working on DF is just a natural for him now

>>152699894
>The game doesn't look good

It's a three-year old trailer, so it's a little barebones. It has a big Oregon Trail aspect to it that doesn't even get shown there.
>>
>>152701492
The purpose of the species presumably is to survive and procreate, but there are any number of the components of that species that will not. In history, most men do not procreate, most bees do not procreate, etcetera.

>I guess he is interested in women, everyone is.

He has more than enough money and fame to be appealing enough to women, so the only explanation is that its not much of a priority.

As far as happiness levels, having a child generally rates as causing more unhappiness than the death of a loved one or other great personal tragedy, so I would definitely not be worried about Toady in general.
>>
>>152701916
>The purpose of the species presumably is to survive and procreate
Right, but that's achieved by everyone doing their part. Failing that is also failing your species. Regardless of the species there's also every specific lineage that ends in you and that dies with you if you don't procreate, so you are failing all those humans homo species that had to fought tooth and nail to survive and ended up in you.

>having a child generally rates as causing more unhappiness than the death of a loved one or other great personal tragedy
Not really and it's not like you have an objective scale to measure how much unhappiness or happiness something brings, especially something that literally spans a lifetime.

No yes, it is failing. From a purely biological point of view, not procreating is that. You can have an excuse if you end up not being able to due to accident, disease or mutation, though the later means you are an evolutionary dead end.

>Unless you wanna argue the majority of men have failed their species, which is pretty retarded.
The majority of men lived in tribal societies where each men cared for each of the children village in the form of food and protection. You don't have that excuse in modern society.

They also had children early and frequently, don't pretend the majority of men didn't procreate or didn't even try to do that. It's not and it was never the case.

>You have people pretty consistently reporting
You have people consistently reporting they saw ghosts, using this "but people said" shit doesn't mean it's true.

>Breeding is not for everyone and has never been, ever.
It's still your most basic purpose and not doing it, especially by choice, means you are a failure, from a biological standpoint. A guy who's rich as fuck and has sex with hundreds of girls will still be a failure for the species and his lineage if he doesn't get any of them pregnant. Same thing if he can't raise that children until it can take care of itself.

>purely a biological point of view

Nonono, you mean from a purely teleological point of view. Slight difference. This is a question about "purpose" exactly.

>You can have an excuse

You don't need an excuse, unless you create a teleological system that requires your values be applied to everyone, even people who don't care.

>don't pretend the majority of men didn't procreate

But they didn't. Only about 40% of men managed to procreate throughout history.

>You have people consistently reporting they saw ghosts, using this "but people said" shit doesn't mean it's true.

Hm? We were discussing the emotional impact. If people consistently report that ghosts, or thinking they see ghosts, are spooky, then yes its fair to say ghosts are spooky as a general thing. Some people may report erotic ghost encounters were the best time of their life, but most people report them as spooky. Even if ghosts don't exist, the feeling, which is what was being discussed, is real.

>your most basic purpose

Oops, teleology strikes again!

>from a biological standpoint

From a teleological standpoint.

>I didn't say I pity him as an insult, Toady is actually the only person I look up to

It is pretty pointless to have such a smug, pitying, condescending point of view of someone who neglects relationships with women apparently out of apathy. As we all know, women are a hit or miss affair, and of my circle of friends, I am the only one in a successful relationship, with the others having just repeatedly hitting anywhere from "mistake" to "disaster" level pretty consistently.

So there's no need to harbor a condescending view of someone for something that has, probably, a 50/50 chance of working out, a good chance of distracting him from something he actually enjoys, and even if it is successful, will still probably bring him more strife.

Yes.

"Numale" means, depending on the user, anything from an effeminate, cringing bully to any man that is not strong and assertive.

"Biotruths" are teleological judgments inspired by biological fact. For example, the opinion that if you don't breed, you've "failed at your biological purpose."

The ironic thing is that I myself am very sympathetic to these notions of biotruths, numales, mgtow/mra/meninist/emencipation proclamation type stuff (and yes, at least two of those are mutually contradictory ideologies) but I take it with a heavy grain of salt and don't stick it where it doesn't belong.

>Only about 40% of men managed to procreate

> Even if ghosts don't exist, the feeling, which is what was being discussed, is real.
That doesn't mean ghosts are real. You are acting like the fact that your claimed "most people think children sucks", which will always be a claim, somehow validates your assertion that they cause more unhappiness than happiness.

>Genetic evolution is the meaning of biologic life
This isn't teleology, I don't know how you can't get this. The most basic purpose of a living organism is to survive and procreate. I'm not discussing *our* apparent purpose or the apparent purpose of the meaning of life, I'm discussing life PURELY from a biological, evolutionary point of view. From that point of view your purpose IS to survive and procreate.

Now theres four years without caravans(except elves, but i ignore them). My civ is certainly not dead, picrelated.

/pol/ is so powerful, they're about to get a president elected
>>
>>152707621
I think what the guy is trying to get to, could be better explained by a different example.

What is the purpose of a citizen in a soceity?
For one, to serve and maintain that society. That is really what the entire concept of a citizen means on a basic level. It's their responsiblity to ensure the continued existence of the soceity that makes them a citizen.

However, just as the existence of a citizen implies the existence of a soceity, which the citizen is responsible for maintaining, the existence of that soceity implies the that it has purpose of its own, which is of course ensuring the continued existence and preferably comfort of its citizens.
In this case these are complementary purposes, but distinct none the less.

Humans's biological purpose in this case, is the perpetuation of genes.
What the guy I believe is trying to say, is that teleology is the meaning behind the gene's own purpose, which with the other example, was society's maintenance of its citizens.

Maybe it's as simple as the gene's purpose being the existence of life, with no greater depth to it, but that's what teleology is according to the other guy, from what I'm gathering.

Do you even realize that you just linked and quoted a philosophical essay? One written by a creation scientist? An article whose goal is to dispute the prevailing interpretation of scientific fact in relation to darwinian evolution, in favor the decidedly fringe concept you've been arguing for so vigorously?

I'm either witnessing delicious irony after a panicked google search for sources, or the overplayed hand of a very talented troll. It's a lovely thing either way.

The purpose of the article is actually to discuss all that, I know. What, you think I only read stuff that agrees with me? But what I believe is far from a fringe concept, and that was the purpose of that article. It's dicussing a widespread view:

It's cynical because you are approaching it purely from a negative perspective while I was merely approaching it from a sympathetic point of view.

> while condemning someone as a failure for not looking at himself as a meat automaton put on earth for a single reason
Again, I didn't condemn him as failure. You didn't understand anything I said. Fuck I even said he accomplished more than I ever could. I said that from a biological point of view he's a failure if he fails to reproduce. That's all, there's no negative connotation with that, just that he's failing to pass on his genes. You are reading way more than I'm writing ever since this whole shitshow started.

Fuck me it's first time I EVER heard the word "biotruth". I don't even know what it is. Apparently it means
>A term usually used in leftist circles to derisively refer to someone who uses their misunderstood notions of human biology and/or evolutionary psychology to justify their heinous, ignorant, and/or bigoted views.
Or
>A "biotruth" is a misunderstanding or misrepresentation of something biological and extrapolating that to learned or socialized behavior.
Again, i'm not extrapolating it to socialized behavior. I don't think Toady should procreate, I'm simply stating he's failing to do so and failing thousands of people that came before him. That's it. Not everyone is out there to get you.

The quote you pulled to bolster your position was a creationist purporting to speak for darwinists. Lazy language about purpose and meaning from "leading bioligists" and delivered to us by creationists are irrelevant in a discussion of scientific fact.
No amount of fallacious argument can dispute the fact that purpose is a metaphysical concept. It is abstract, unobservable except by inference. Any biologist who tells you that "life" has any "purpose" is either expressing a nonscientific sentiment, carelessly describing the results of reproduction, or dumbing it down for laymen.

You condemned him as a failure in an objective sense, to the human race, in a way that none of his accomplishments can undo, using a metric that makes Octomom infinitely more of a credit to the species. That's as cynical as it gets.

>Fuck I even said he accomplished more than I ever could

And that he's a failure to his species, while you're a credit to the species.

>there's no negative connotation with that

It was not the only quote I pulled and it was pulled especially to show how widespread the "fringe" stuff I'm talking about is. Obviously, creationists won't agree with what I'm talking about since the basic belief of a creationist is that life has a divine purpose.

>No amount of fallacious argument
There's nothing fallacious about this, it's a common concept. You could argue that me arguing that it's common is fallacious but I already brought 3 different sources that agree with me, what do you want more, a cake with commentary by Carl Sagan?

>And that he's a failure to his species, while you're a credit to the species.
I said he's failing to reproduce while I plan to succeed in doing in that. There's no negative/positive connotation in that, it's a remark.

>A failure that you pity
No, I pity him for not having someone to love, not for failing to reproduce. Maybe I expressed myself ambiguously.

>Its simply "lol bro, you need to get laid" wrapped up in a lot of condescending faux-intellectualism
Which is simply another case of you viewing something the way you want to view because you are a cynical bitch. If I get shot right now I will be a failure too. If a millionary gets laid thousands of times but die childless he's as much of a failure in this regard as Toady. It has shit all to do with "getting laid", how hard is to understand that? He could do it through artificial insemination for all I care, and I mentioned this before. Are you even following this conversation?

That entire post, and half of the rest of your attempts to defend your position, is an argument from authority. A fallacy. You aren't arguing the merits of your position, you're just pretending to speak with the authority of "scientists". The closest you've come to trying to support your position are quotes from a popsci rag for laymen and a creationist, and repeatedly insisting that most scientists believe this metaphysical attribution of intent that you've attached to the fact that self-replicating molecules exist.

I have repeatedly made the argument that attributing metaphysical qualities to physical phenomena is unscientific. Statements regarding metaphysics are not science. You've repeatedly asserted that this is merely what scientists believe, expecting that the fact some scientist writing for laymen once used lazy unscientific language would allow you to evade the point, and declined to address or refute the argument itself. But please, continue to repeat yourself over and over. You're obviously an authority on both metaphysics and the philosophical beliefs of all scientists. "What I say three times is true", right?

As long as you don't have to fuck around with tissues and body shapes and shit it shouldn't be too hard.

Good luck then. Also if it's your first time messing with minecarts and ramps, the wiki page isn't very specific about one thing. It tells you that to correctly carve a track over an upward ramp you should start on the ramp and designate at least one tile more in the direction you want the cart to go. But you should do that for both the upward direction and the direction a cart pushed from the level above and sliding down the ramp would be going. To do that you have to have a wall behind the ramp. When you look on the ramp it should always say
>Track NS
not just
>Track S
Where south would be the rest of the tracks on the same z-level

If you don't do that you'll be able to guide the cart both up and down no problem, but if you try to push it from the top so that it goes all the way down on itself it won't pick up speed when it goes down a ramp.

I've never used minecarts at all.
I never found them worth using.

Well if you don't want to spend ten in game years making pump stacks and killing your FPS then a minecart with magma is, as far as I'm informed, the cheapest and simplest way to transport magma. In a year after carving all the tracks you can quite possibly have ten or more magma forges up and running.

Heh. How heavy is that slab? I've considered using a slab for a weapon but they always seem too heavy to be convenient for carrying around.

My strength is obscenely high because I'm a a vampire. Also I'm an orc, which means my base strength was probably 5000 and my size is ~30% bigger than a human. It doesn't slow me down at all and it works great for crushing skulls. Helmets do pose a problem, but I can just wrestle them off with my free hand.
I got myself stuck in a dark fortress and have been running around one-shotting goblins with it for the past hour now.

So I've been building up my fort nicely. Didn't do much wood cutting yet, concentrating of carving out the structure
I decide, "yeah, this is the time", I start cutting wood so I can get a furnace going and start making some metal.

All of a sudden a Magma Man from god knowns where shows up, wrecks my shit in and starts a forest fire.
