Freelancing is great because you end up with medium-late game weapons and armor for very little effort.

Why does my game think I've run out of food in my inventory? I have like 5 slots filled with food. And no, it's not rotten.

Crossbows are good against armor, will last longer than bows in sieges, have a higher damage-ammo efficiency & cause them to crouch as they reload, making them more difficult to hit. Yes charge mechanic. You also become less overpowered when you inevitably prance around on your horse aswell. I really like the way cavalry was handled in VC. If used correctly they can be good, but they're not the "win instantly" unit type anymore.

Cavalry is already pretty weak in the hands of the AI because they often charge to their deaths haphazardly in low numbers without coordination with the infantry/archers that all cavalry factions except the Khergits include.

In the player's hands it's somewhat balanced by the cost, but at the end of the day if you can afford to faceroll everything with knights you can afford to faceroll everything with other elite troops.
