Guard redirects attacks towards the guarding unit and while guarding incoming damage is reduced
Akechi mitsuhide is a tactician, tacticians buff your units and can remove enemy buffs if they are there, the effectiveness of buffs scale off the intelligence stat.

Just a little tip, don't go into your next battle using the same formation, you don't usually need to guard the backline.

Use satisfaction bonuses as soon as you get them, use call for reinforcements first, after enough turns has passed you will get a new unit, I recommend Leazas, you get units in order that goes mediocre > good > great, zeth gives you mage units which attack very slow but deal heavy damage, compared to Leazas you won't make much use of them, the second unit out of Zeth though is a tactician with high stats all round and is very useful.

Go declare war on hara so you have something to attack and attack them, try not to stay at peace.

Only use the elite troops bonus after at least getting Rance's attack to 6 through textbook items you tend to get through battles.

One other thing, don't ever vassal, it's a waste and often cuts you out of satisfaction and/or good units.

When they're at 7/7 they move up from hate/normal/etc. and you can upgrade the unit, usually you want to upgrade their attack skills, for tacticians you want to improve their buff skill, footsoldiers improve their guard, all guard has the smallest guard boost each time you use the move but it guards everyone, ally guard plus is the normal guard it's just at a level nobody is going to get through.

You can also improve their stats, only use it on stats that are 6 and higher.

there are some time limits, but a lot of them are hastened by quick expansion. you could sit around for quite a long time if you take it very slowly.

but there are four routes in this game and you're forced into true on first playthrough, so anything you miss can be gotten on other routes. Some things can only be done on other routes.

If there's one thing I'd recommend to everyone though is that tactician buffs are extremely powerful and units like Urza, Tourin and Ai are some of the best units you can get, at least on low star runs.

At 50 satisfaction you can get another fan, you want to get 50 satisfaction as soon as you can.

For Rance I'd recommend using textbooks on him, you should have gotten some textbooks after battles by now and if you choose the get money out of territories you've taken event (I can't remember the name) you get one in the order of attack > def > int > attack > etc.

If you used some on Rance so he has at least 6 attack use the elite troops satisfaction bonus, if you managed to get a speed textbook it'd be great if you used that too, elite troops improves all of Rance's stats by 1, which if you already upgraded him with standard textbooks make him really strong, after that you can get a Rance attack satisfaction bonus where he gains a special move where he attacks first with his special move then his unit follows through.

I typically conquer Uesugi early (because the event makes it easy) and Takeda is then set to cap Hojo so I just declare on them, I want to fight the tanuki's next for Senhime anyway and Takeda gives you a free war with them as well.

Your point about it not being new-player friendly is valid though, as you'll be at war with 5 different enemies at once and you need to do a lot of strategic retreating (which is why getting Senhime while most of this unfolds helps clear her as well)

A lot of the fun of the first playthrough is the learning experience. Don't take that away from yourself, you'll regret it.

If you fall way behind, the game does hold your hand a little bit at the end if it's your first playthrough, and it's very hard to actually lose the game, only to stall out somewhat, and that's where defending and amassing power/money comes in.

When you do inevitably stall out at the end though, use that upgrading time to give characters the initial battle rating up+ skill.

Similarly, missing stuff doesn't really matter, you'll end up replaying it so you can always catch the rest of the content then.

It's only the final chapters that are different for each route.

Over the course of the game Shizuka starts getting more tolerant of Rance and realizes that she enjoys the sex.
A nice scene is when she and Rance are sharing a bath after sex and when the time limit runs out she just sighs and decides to stay in the bath with Rance a bit longer.

Plus Rance helps her a lot with Nagi and protecting Maria and that all gets resolved quite well.

Rance also spends a lot of time during sex kissing and trying to pleasure Shizuka rather than just fucking her.
During the last sex scenes they're fucking and she keeps on pulling him down to kiss more but still tries to deny that she is his woman - mainly through just shaking her head.

In her route they have to beat the final boss quickly to get an item to make her and Nagi adults again. There are two ends. In one it fails and the other they succeed. In the loli end Shizuka and Nagi still spend a lot of time with Nagi who is playing like a normal young girl and Shizuka is happy to look over her.
Nagi also really looks up to and likes Rance.

In the adult end Shizuka is Rance's lover

In canon Shizuka is still a loli and sort of relieved to be so because it means Rance will stop trying to fuck her so she won't fall for him (she already pretty much has)

A lot of, if not most characters don't need to be captured in battle in order to sex them, and it usually just expedites the process. As far as I remember there's only 3 characters you need to capture in order to sex them, Mouri Kiku, Nanjou Ran and Agireda.

All other commanders are captured by default at some point along the way.

For sexytimes I do recommand you try and invade the Youkai as they have some really powerful commanders to fuck and recruit.

In that case, have some tips (spoilers included)

You'll want to attack the Miko institute as quickly as possible (you need to go there to try and have sex with Miko a couple of times first) as conquering it will give Rance a nice buff and gives you one of the strongest characters in the game (Natori)

After that attack Uesugi house, as if you leave them be they will be a constant pain in the ass by sending reinforcements to your enemies. Uesugi is also easy to defeat, if you send Rance to fight them any time Kenshin is on the battlefield (you can use someone like Kanami to scout and see the enemy units before the fight starts) you will win automatically without actually fighting. When you get the option to make peace with Kenshin's uncle, refuse him and rush his last province, doing so will get you two more very strong commanders (Kenshin and Naoe Ai)

I personally prefer getting reinforcements from Zeth first, while the first unit (Rizna) is rather terrible the second (Urza) is one of the most broken units in the game combined with Kenshin (she can learn a special attack that reduces all enemy actions by 1 as well as damaging them and interrupting them) The last one (Magic) is another fairly weak unit but she has a lot of satisfaction events.

Nah, I finished 6 years ago, I've played every Rance game though (even untranslated) beside KR and 4.2. My understanding of a lot of events is sketchy at best, and I've been holding off on playing KR because there's a ton of potential spoilers in there.

The ending of 03 actually does somewhat imply Gele might come back for X, especially considering there was also artwork done for her for Quest, it seems at least Alicesoft has some plans for her.

Since Rance VI is getting an upgraded resolution with it's Western release, I wonder what other games would get similar treatment. My thoughts usually turn to Daiteikoku.

I'm not banking on Daiteikoku getting a Western release for several reasons though. The fact that it didn't do too well on it's initial release, and the potential for controversy. Daiteikoku was one of the major factors for closing their website to foreign IPs, if I'm not mistaken. I can easily imagine gaming "journalism" jumping on it to make everyone angry about Space Hitler. I would think that's the kind of press Alicesoft would want to avoid, and a risk one wouldn't want to take on a game that performed under expectations.

If they did do it though, I wonder if they'd do a resolution upgrade, like with Rance 6. Daiteikoku is a game I've always felt needed an updated rerelease. Something that fixes problems with the game (One event per turn, ect), and adds more onto it that they couldn't/didn't do the first time around in order to release a more complete package. Additional routes, extra scenes and the like. I've felt that, while it may not be a stellar game, there's probably plenty of fixes that can be done to it without creating many new assets. A second release in a new market would probably be enough excuse to do something like that. But again, I'm not in the habit of hoping.

I think a similar approach to Sengoku Rance or Daibanchou, however, would make it a good sale. Updated graphics and maybe adding additional content to encourage the old players to get the new package.

Those are my pipe dreams, anyway.
