Best Blademaser weapon is probably DB, as much as I hate to say it.

Adepts DB is god tier. The ability to cancel out of most animation, sidestep, gain meter from evades is insane. Guild is still great. Touch screen special -> pin wheel is amazing. Striker is classic. Drink Mega Dash juice and it's savage. Aerial is spammy but effective.

Wolf's Maw is probably the strongest hunter art in the game as well.

DB is sort of boring after a while, though (X+A -> X -> A -> X gets old), nevertheless, it's clear times are commanding and it's weak on no monsters.

The constant need to re-orientate your camera for aiming. On lad blademasters only need horizontal movement, in water they also have to worry about the Y-axis.

More like get good. Swimming is a whole other beast so it means you can't be a lazy like GS or hammer users are used to in being able to circle strafe around until they can do a super charge attack.

You always have to be on the movie and watch from all angles. It was a pain to do on the 3DS without a CPP, but it was great when you had 2 sticks.


Swimming is how you weeded out the true casuals of the game.

Water combat was near universally despised by the same breed of MH "fan" who has been playing these games for a decade and still can't figure out how to not be there when a Rath charges.

The reason it went away and probably won't come back has very little to do with its reception, and everything to do with the fact that underwater combat forces the devs into a scenario where mainly-underwater monsters can't function on maps without areas devoted to swimming, land-only monsters are limited to a tiny handful of areas on those maps that do have swimming, and amphibious monsters basically double the workload of the devs in terms of designing monster animations and movesets, without the player ever really feeling like they're getting twice the content. It's just not an efficient or cost-effective direction to take the franchise in, even though it was a really interesting, fun addition to the core gameplay.

The controls certainly could be fixed and it could be reintroduced in gen 4 but, like you said, more variety usually makes a game much more expensive to make. That and the fact that 4th gen was mainly a portable console generation (which have even worse camera controls) were probably the main reasons why swimming was removed. There was barely any need to remove it considering 3rd gen games were the ones that sold the best until then in the west.

I am not that anon you're replying to but I am sorry, this is a fucking lie.

Aerial combat brought us the very unbalanced and spammy mounting (which, despite being nerfed in Gen, is even worse due to the aerial spam on certain monsters) and completely HORRIBLE maps in 4th generation. Contrast that with the great maps that 3rd gen had. And lets not forget that no monster is balanced for vertical combat, with shitty vertical hitboxes and always acting as if you were on the ground, apart from some randomly aimed fireballs.

Literally the ONLY good thing about vertical combat is the occasional aerial attack when jumping off a ledge. Everything else is shit and underwater combat, even if not perfect, was leagues better after getting used to the controls.

Dude you're clearly delusional. If there's something most people even here at /mhg/ agree on is that 4th gen maps are complete cancer. Broken vertical hitboxes, too many attacks miss or are hard to aim (in case of gunners) because of vertical terrain, monsters slide across the terrain and hit you from below without even touching you, etc.
Volcanic Hollow, Ancient Steppes, Dunes are the probably the most hated maps of the series after 4th gen.
At least in water you didn't have ground below you to limit your attacks, so many attacks had a big vertical range, like any GS swing. This was because attacks were actually different and balanced around underwater.

Underwater wasn't the best, but when you say that vertical maps are a great improvement, you are either bait, a 4u baby who actually doesn't know how underwater works or someone who hated 3rd gen for whatever reason.

I believe it depends on if you use the scope a lot or not. Many BG users like to orient themselves horizontally to the monster, kind of like bow users, and only aim when strictly necessary.
Others just aim all the time and I doubt they have any issue.

Don't worry anon, I agree with you. I love the 4U maps. Granted I am a 4U baby but after experiencing some of the older maps in Gens I feel like I at least have something for comparison.

Verdant Hills is easily the worst map I've ever seen. Awkward navigation, zones are often too small and tight and/or have awkward curvature that makes it a pain in the ass to maneuver.
Marshlands is incredibly boring with how open it is and the plain visuals. The zones also aren't connected well.
Arctic Ridge is okay.
Deserted island is good.
Volcano is boring visually but fine gameplay wise.

Meanwhile I love every 4th gen map except Primal Forest which is just an okay. They're all interesting both visually and mechanically and feel like a blast to hunt in.

I "got my information" by playing the game and having a cursory, kind-of-thing-you-can-pick-up-as-a-consumer level of knowledge about what goes into making a game. Use your head.

The water monsters in Tri were far more limited than they should have been given how much work had to go into underwater combat (everything that could swim in the initial Tri release was a Leviathan, and even 3U didn't really expand that other than throwing a bone to Plesioth). They were limited basically to D. Island and Flooded Forest, and in D. Island, they could only really make use of a tiny handful of areas, that were all basically in the same section of the map. In Flooded Forest, the reverse was true, where the non-flying enemies really had nowhere to go. The enemies that could be fought underwater were basically universally shit on land, because doubling up on the work for their animations and movesets didn't really work out.

It's not coming back, but it's a matter of how much time, effort, and money has to go into it, for returns that still end up underwhelming and feel limited.

Aerial combat is "superior" in exactly one sense - that it can be used in any map, against any monster, in any area. Past that, it's shallow as shit (literally one aerial attack in MH4U for everything except IG, and the aerial attack was universally useless for everything except mounting; even the aerial style in MHGen basically just ups it to two attacks per weapon) and completely uninteresting compared to underwater combat.
