Things like this are why tech tree is broken. If you're familiar with civ, it shouldn't be hard to understand why you cannot afford to not be taking a path that grants you +50% Science towards getting Crossbowmen, or whatever the next gen Military unit is. Anyone who doesn't beeline straight for this shit will be promptly removed from the game by the people that did.
>>
>>151851285
I agree that it is broken. a 20% tech boost is fine, even 30%, but half the tech pre researched an era or two before you can even get it is just bad. plus, having looked at the tech tree, literally none of the eureka boosts for both the civic and science trees are anything special. its all just normal stuff that will happen during normal gameplay on a normal map. in certain maps you might not get boosts for x or y tech, but on others you will. its very boring looking and it doesnt really make sense.

Is there a way or mod to create a custom character in CK2 and insert them into the game? And is there a mod that lets you play lower lords and courtiers?
>>

crossbowmen are still pretty powerful in 6. hell, even moreso because of unit movement changes onto rough terrain/over rivers.
>>

>>
>>151852259
Yeah you can customize your character before you start playing them, you only get X amount of points or whatever to modify them and the more good things you choose, like a lower age, the more points you spend. What do you mean by lower lords? You can play as anybody from a count to an emperor, doesn't matter if there's somebody above or below you. Courtiers no, I'm like 90% sure if you don't directly own any land its game over.
>>
>>151852259
There's a DLC and mods to enhance it.
>>
>>151852059

I mean, unless you can actually use Culture/Religion/Diplomacy in some practical way to impede another person from wiping you off the map with their military in Civ 6 there's no reason to believe this principal will change. And I don't believe anything we've seen has suggested that you can do that. Whatever penalties you receive are just going to be minor annoyances that you can clean up by shitting out happiness buildings.

This meme of "small ship > big ship" needs to stop.

It's fucking retarded. Corvettes should not be able to take on battleships, it's just absolutely retarded and boring in every way.
>>
>>151864481
>The Mumbles
>>
>>151867037
Why shouldn't they be able to? And how is it more boring than current battleship blobs? At least this will force diversity.
>>
>>151867037
the meme is based on actual events where smaller ships--destroyers and torpedo boats--DID engage and sink ships much larger than themselves.

in terms of spaceships the parallels of capability fall apart, but can sort of make sense? if you skew things the right way.
small ship with devoted space to better engines and few, powerful weapons could work, but if you're talking Stellaris I'm certain Paradox fucked it up and just gave a flat bonus to small ships engaging big ships because 'small = fast right and hard to hit!'

small does not mean fast, small means small. small and EXPENSIVE with the requisite tech means fast.

tl;dr I agree that shit is fucking stupid when it isn't done properly.

I'm gonna compare a handful of games I have and just throw some of my experience with them out there. feel free to call me a blog posting faggot
>>
>>151870728
>>151868369
I have several issues with the idea that a corvette would be able to take on a battleship but I'm just going to list a couple of the more obvious, glaring problems I see with it.

1. There is no possible way the corvettes would be moving fast enough that a computer in an age where they are traveling faster than the speed of light would not be able to calculate precision shots from even the largest guns that are almost always accurate. Bigger guns being less accurate is also a meme with no basis in reality.

2. The meme that a battleship must be loaded with all large, slow, inaccurate guns. EVE Online somewhat falls to this meme as well. If we really built a battleship in space, it would be littered with weapons and missiles of all sizes.

Now I understand that they made certain design choices and they are doing certain things in the name of "balance" and all that. But that's also a problem, they're idiotic design choices and retarded idea of "balance" because muh multiplayer in a game mostly played by singleplaying autists is not a justification for the glaring issues that appear in every aspect of their game.

rant 1/2.
>>
>>151870728

>>151868369
Forced diversity is as bad as no diversity by choice. why WOULD anyone build smaller ships if you could make a bigger, better equipped, and more effective ship instead?
It's a problem of game design. There isn't enough forethought put into "how do we encourage diversity of forces without forcing it on the player?"

In Endless Space there is no reason to build small ships unless you want a specific fleet or ship bonus which is rarely worth it. Unless you want fleets of cheap throwaways, but that literally applies to any game so its a half-assed point.

GC2 suffers the same problem as ES. There's no point in making small ships, unless you want to kit one for a specific fleet bonus to save space on your actual warships or you want to make a throwaway horde.

In Hearts of Iron 3 there's a Poor Screen Penalty on fleets that makes capital ships more vulnerable. A poor example as it IS forced but HoI3 is WW2, so its historically mostly right. And, generally speaking, a well-screened fleet does more damage with fewer casualties. Except when you get swarmed by CVs.

In Sins, you can build way more small vessels than capitals that are also magnitudes cheaper. There's also a cap on large ships. It's a bit ham-fisted but you can research that away quickly enough. Of course by end-game you'll probably have maxed out the capital counter anyways, so its a moot point with Sins.

In Space Empires 5 smaller vessels get a defensive bonus due to size, and can achieve a higher movement speed. So you can make picket scouts, tacklers or torpedo boats that are fast, hard to hit, or hard-counter those exact roles. I think its actually done right here.

I haven't played more than a couple hours of Distant Worlds, but it seems like there's nothing stopping me from making torpedo boats or fast escorts for large ships. But then again I could just make a bunch of big ships covered in guns. I'll have to play more to get a feeling for it.

tl;dr i'm a faggot
>>
>>151872664
Stellaris is about civilizations evolving on planets spread throughout a galaxy. Each of these civilizations would have radically different ways of fighting and designing combat ships. The way to "balance" these things isn't to limit player and AI choices in the ship designs but have a better economy and tie the ships to that in better ways. The strategic resources and amount of minerals and energy credits you have access to would in both realistic and non realistic worlds impact the choices you make in building a fleet.

I'm fine with a civilization that has really developed their corvettes and small ships because, idk they live in a nebula so larger ships travel slower or some shit and they have a history of hunting in packs and that came through in their fleet design. While a different civilization with a history of building pyramids and large penis like buildings that masturbates to grand cathedrals and has access to some strategic minerals that allow for stronger ship structures invests more of their resources into massive battleships. While in a different part of the galaxy a civilization has evolved a sort of hive mind and their reflects in their building of carriers and orientation around deployment of smaller ships with larger command ships.

Stellaris almost got to this cool dynamic way of developing fleets with how different ethics traits and AI personalities would prioritize different module slots and different weapon loadouts. Instead of fleshing out the game and making that make sense in terms of economy balance they just decided "well we should just remove some player choice because balance is hard and our AI is shit".

I hate the hype I had for this game but I also hate the glaring issues that it has and the retarded design choices they made. My only hope is that one day there will be an HPM or MEIOU-like mod that adds a lot of complexity and dynamics to the game. Also more star wars and WH40k ship models

end rant 2/2
>>
>>151872726
>No reason to build small ships in ES
>What are power modules
>>
>>151872726
I think the best way to balance and encourage diversity without forcing it or allowing none at all is to tie it to the economy. A mineral rich empire with access to lots of strategic resources should be able to build lots of advanced battleships and wreck nerds and you can balance that by upkeep, so if a smaller nations starts using it's groups of corvettes/smaller ships to plunder and pillage your supply lines and resource worlds you'll potentially go bankrupt.

There are a ton of ways wiz and paradox could make the game more fun and dynamic but they insist on making it casual and limiting player choice.
>>
>>151872664
>>151872793
I agree. It's on the designers to make the gameplay fit the world, not the other way around.

In reality, a large warship in space would have literally no trouble deleting a swarm of small ships from existence because it has every advantage in every category. Point-defense is anti-small-fast-thing, and everything is a missile in space.

>>151873415
yep, because at the end of the day someone has to get paid to build these things, and someone has to pull the rocks out of the earth/space rocks/whatever.

A space 4X game should really be an economy simulator first and then everything else.

So if there are no policy trees, does that mean Civ 6 civs are can have more malleable playstyles? Like can you go hard conquering early on but then go completely peaceful without being weighed down by a now useless war focused set of culture policies?

It seems so.
>>
>>151886025
that's what the card and government system seems to support

>>
>>151886025
I certainly hope so. I did really like policy trees but they felt super restrictive with you practically being forced into tradition/liberty first and then rationalism being so ridiculously strong your mid game options were super constricting too.

Lets be real, how many times did anyone go piety or aesthetics outside of low difficulty single player, sometimes you'd take a single point in patronage for the forbidden city. Maybe. I should probably look into some mods to spice those up desu.
>>
>>151886580

you could cheese with Piety/Aesthetics with a religion rush with Byzantium (get triple faith buildings and the +2 Tourism from faith buildings, rush to meet everyone, shit out cities like crazy) and get culture victories before 1600 AD but that's about the only viable route I can think of

I'm getting +75 culture in every single one of my cities every single kill. It says I have 110 turns until my next policy but I get it in just 11 turns. It's broken, but like you said, policy trees are inherently restricting. I have no choice but to keep conquering in order to keep my science and culture up.

I'm super glad we're getting governments and anarchy back. Why the fuck they got rid of that system I'll never know.

I'm glad they are getting rid of the travesty that was luxuries and global happiness.

>Trade is part of history, and there are limiting factors on population size, so let's combined them!
They tried forcing two game mechanics into one. It screwed CiV up in a way that no DLC could fix because it was too fundamental to the vanilla. BERT did it a lot better with separate health and trade route system.

So, I only bought Stellaris a couple days ago. Just a quick question:

If I make a sector with a fully developed planet and a handful of empty planets, will the AI colonize the empty planets for me?

nope, they may sometimes send construction ships to claim resources in their sector though but don't expect that too often. Just make sure they always have enough energy and minerals in the planets tab

Aw fuck, I don't wanna have to colonize all these fuckin' planets manually. Shit takes forever.
>>
>>151900529
>>151901084
You have to do literally everything for them, you have get all the resources in their systems, colonize all the planets, and give them energy and minerals for a while before they actually start turning a meager profit.
>>
Is /vg/ moderated?
>>
>>151902697
Yes, and why do you ask?
>>
>>151901084
Just colonize the good ones which are 20+ tiles, or if you're still expanding just colonize the good ones that are gonna expand your borders the most. Every planet you colonize gives a +10% to research cost and every pop you have gives a +1% to research cost. Which means research will take longer if you aren't getting enough research stations and labs to counteract this penalty. Which is generally easy to do.

Same as Rule 8. Jannies still come from here and presumably aren't little bitches about getting called names.

I'm not site staff, but that's very much the visual enforcement that occurs.
>>
>>151904368
>>151904604
It's not enforced as strictly on most boards and these boards are all the better off for it You can argue that there's other types of cancer but if you want super strict discussion you're in the wrong place. In fact the biggest attraction of /vg/ is its off topic stuff. On /vg/ bans or deletions are handed out mainly for 3 (indecipherable text, anthropomorphic, and grotesque), 4, 5, 11, 12, and 15. Most boards follow this unless you're actually spamming or being an extreme shit.
Basically, the rules are only guidelines and jannies will [usually] try to look at context. Historical / tactical discussion is technically off topic in any general here but it's tolerated for the most part.

Continents can be connected to one another in Civ 6, which is cool. So there can be land bridges. >Secularism gives science
>>
>>151918791
Secularism in Civ games from what I can tell is more about leaving the church to their own devices instead of enforcing it, then spending that money on other shit like research, business, and education. Meanwhile the reason state religion would give less science isn't because of anything else but because dogma usually doesn't allow questioning, which is the basis of science.
But yeah I'm tired of the religion is bad meme. The biggest drawback to religion should be random events where "dogma says no" and bans a building or tech for a few turns and the unhappiness penalty from having different religions in your city. It should also penalize diplomacy with other nations that don't share your religion or are secular.
>>
>>151919059
The point I was making is it gives you science even if you don't have a fucking religion. How does this make any sense? If they wanted to go religion is bad route they should give penalties to religion
>>
>>151919234

Is it impossible for my city Adwa to work this aluminium tile way off to the left? When I go to city view you can only lock citizens to work 3 tiles away from the city. No matter what I click on as city focus; productions, science, default, no one will work it. I've got the aluminium but the tile itself produces 11 production and 6 science
>>
>>151921043
Don't you need a mine?

Not without mods. Cities can only work 3 tiles away, but if you settle a city that has that aluminum in its 3 tiles, it would be able to work it instantly

The problem in BERT was that extrenal trade routes give you masses of strategic resources, making actual territorial control of strategic sites totally pointless. It annihilates geostrategy completly.

>replace Brazil with Gran Columbia to fill in South American quota

yeah yeah Gran Columbia was short lived but who cares, it and its leader played a major role in shaping South America. I think the devs should have aimed at Simon Bolivar if they wanted some extravagant personalities. It would definitely be a fresh civ at least.

This is still bad, IIRC there's only one South American civ and it's Brazil, yes? In TSL map Brazil will have one fucking continent all to them and will snowball to much. There must be at least one other civ there

This is the reason I think there must be a civ in Ireland too. England will have two islands to them

I can't really remember how it was in my games. I'm inclined to think Brazil would be in economic isolation and would fall behind in techs (despite the jungles) so it'd balance it out.

It's not really worth it on higher difficulties, by the time you finish it (on emperor it's possible to build it) you could have advanced much more in techs, military and empire building. I found myself actually behind AI quite frequently when I built the library.

Maybe only with Korea and possibly Babylon it's worth it.
>>
>>151927973
I play MP and risk it in that becuase it's worth the risk.
I find that anything above Emperor is just not fun. It gives the AI too many early advantages that you have to play safer than a pastor in a brothel and it always ends with me getting conquered early or winning late game with diplomatic victory.
>>
>>151927921
GL was better when the civil service springboard was more of a thing and tradition was more overpowered early.

I prefer oracle now just because the pressure to build it is much less than GL and helps you get the good tradition policies sooner.
>>
>>151928178
It remains a valid choice to build it, though.

It's not overpowered, of course, maybe even less than optimal for certain civs and under certain conditions.
But the package of 2 writing slots + free library + free tech is actually pretty good.

Random tip that came to my mind: While playing Civ V if you ever drop to starving for whatever reason, just set your city to make a settler, they always stagnate during making a settler so starving doesn't affect you
>>
>>151928589
Yes, it's just a good overall deal.
>>
>>151930687
I noticed this the other day.
You can also use this to rush-build a settler, since you literally don't need any food.
It feels like cheating to be honest.
Civ IV was better with this.

>>
>>151934762

>>
>>151935360
I don't know the answer as I don't play Stellaris but one way to find an event quickly is to go to the localization files and type in part of the text of the event that you remember, Paradox usually names event localization after the corresponding event number or string.
>>
>>151935556
I think it's production + 1/2 food or whole food I forget which.

It does it for workers too
>>
>>151935942
It's all food unless C2C changed it.
>>
>>151935556
>>151935942
From memory Civ IV does it the same way Civ V does it - production + food build settlers, thus the city can't grow, since food is going towards the settler.
However, negative food doesn't reduce settler build time.
I think producing a settler also reduced city population by 1 when it popped out.

Still, its not an exploit, since you'd rather the city starve, but build usable shit. On any high difficulty you always want to build units and buildings, and you don't get that "nothing to do" moment.

Settlers do get bonus production from food though.

They stop growth because growth is added to production. So yes, food is used. Just not total food, it was excess food. The value that would grow your city was used to produce settlers, while the value that maintained its population was still used for that maintenance.

Taking a city warmonger penalty isn't always the same, it depends on the number of the cities your enemies have. If you wiped France that's why they hate you, that's is if you sure they hate you because of warmonging penalties

Is there a loading save problem in EL? I loaded a save from my last game, which was from a month ago and it's different from what I remember. IIRC, I had already two settlers out to settle on those 2 regions, I had 4 cities already and was completing a quest for those city states for whatever they're called. In this save I don't have those 2 settlers or the city state quest(I do have a army already commanded to go to that city though) and I only have 2 cities

Or I just simply remember wrong

It's actually a step in the right direction- Battleships equipped with huge, slow guns losing to swarms of smaller ships is a good idea, since nuking five of the corvettes wouldn't help if the other fifteen closed enough to overwhelm your shields and start shredding your hull with their multitude of weapons while you're reloading.

However, I agree that they're going about it the wrong way; ship roles should come naturally from the way the weapons and defenses as a whole work, not because of hard-coding "this is your role, so you get +15 against this thing because reasons."

The best way to go about it would be to 1. make it so that weapon ranges are the same from small slot to large slot- the value that varies should be Rate Of Fire- ie, small weapons do less damage per shot but fire faster, while Large weapons hit hard but have long reloads.
The second measure would be to make the smaller ships faster in combat, so that they can close fast enough that the enemy battleships can only get off two volleys, not the six to ten volleys they currently do. This creates the need for a screening force NATURALLY, rather than ham-fisting a "you get +50 damage against this guy because he's the type you're strong against, GO CRUISER-MON!" to force diversity.
This method works better because, if you wish, you can counter enemy corvettes by having a group of battleships bristling with smaller weaponry to back up your longer-range battleships. They'll have the disadvantage of being too slow to completely prevent the enemy from engaging the longer-range battleships, but there's the point: you can choose, and have advantages and drawbacks as a result of your choice.
Instead, now they're just going to try and hard-code in diversity.

That's retarded though, because a battleship wouldn't be fitted with only some fucking massive thing. The best way to go for it is make Corvettes faster and much cheaper while battleships become basically artillery and you just can't afford that many. Corvettes are screens and your infantry line, the back line is what's doing damage - if your front line collapses, though, there's so many fucking corvettes you just can't shoot them all down with your 3 battleships.

Hence why it's a step in the right direction- you want to equip your battleship with something other than the massive weapons for gameplay reasons.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure that's actually what's going to happen- it looks like they're going to make it so that Battleships have to equip the biggest weapons available.

fuck you and fuck paradox
>>
>>151966984
You're a fucking retard.

There is 0, zero, nil, no reason a battleship gun should have a harder time hitting a corvette in an age where they can go faster than the speed of light.

They need to balance ships like in Sins of the Solar Empire, smaller ships are much cheaper and it's easier to field more of them, while larger ships should require more upkeep but be deadlier.

Ship classes should not be a weapons triangle and if you think that they should you're mentally disabled.

This is a silly thing to state. Dogma doesn't allow questioning of the dogma, everything else is up for debate. in the future when we're traveling at the speed of light and have AI (that today can way outperform humans aiming) that has advanced centuries ahead, aiming a gun the size of a house at a corvette the size of several houses would be extremely easy. Especially if it's a fucking laser beam.

>>151975264
And you do realize we aren't talking about ocean going ships that can't be littered with weapons because they have gravity and tipping over to be worried about right?

Stellaris would be much better if you could design your ships however you wanted with certain designs being given more weight to different AI ethics and personalities, but the limiting factor was the resources you had access to and the size of your economy rather than this forced "corvettes > battleships >cruisers >destroyers> corvettes" memery that is completely arbitrary and removes creativity.

Ultimately they need to stop balancing the game around multiplayer.

Someone needs to read up on their naval history. They pulled the small and intermediate guns off because they couldn't penetrate armor on all the new ironclad vessels. There was no reason to keep them.

It would be like mounting 75mm guns on the Iowa. Why bother? They're too small for naval combat, and they can't serve an AA role.
>>
>>151976887
How tiny is your brain? We are talking about fucking spaceships not sea faring ships. The points you make have no bearing on a spaceship with laser beams and proton torpedoes that goes faster than the speed of light.

"realism is not an argument in a science fiction game"

Which I actually find unfortunate because if realism was something paradox was going for in stellaris it's NOT realistic to limit a massive battleship that is IN SPACE to 4 or 5 large guns and nothing else.
>>
>>151977287
Nah. Same deal. There's no reason to have an intermediate caliber between ballistic AA and burst shells. It's not going to do anything.

It does make sense though that the main battery would have serious issues tracking and hitting ships significantly smaller than what it's made to hit though and that PD would be too weak to really damage anything more durable than a missile. It's the reason it works that way in EVE too. A ship moving at 5km/s is practically impossible to track and hit with a gun designed for maximum damage and penetration against a ship that can barely break 100m/s, and a swarm of those super fast motherfuckers is going to ruin your day eventually. There's weaponized stasis tech in game for the explicit purpose of holding those nippy motherfuckers still so your guns can actually hit the bastards.

Stellaris doesn't have this particular issue but I remember playing MoO3 when I was a kid I didn't know better shut up and you could mount guns on a spinal mount that ran the entire length of the ship and came with an expected massive jump in damage but naturally had no firing arc whatsoever and could only fire straight ahead, making said ships extremely vulnerable to being attacked from multiple directions.

I still think they could find a better solution than just removing the option to make screening battleships though. But that would actually require some effort from them and we know not to expect that from paradox.
>>
>>151982867
Civ 6 is the last hope for the 4x genre, all we can do is pray they don't remove any of the content/mechanics we've seen so far and bundle it up as dlc. BE and the Starships travesty flopped hard, they need a genuinely strong game release.
>>
>>151985631
if I recall, one of the things they mentioned up front was that pretty much every mechanic in Civ V currently is going to be in Civ VI on release

so trade routes, archaeologists, that sort of shit, which is nifty. It seems this time around, Civ VI's being made by people who genuinely want to make a good game
>>
>>151985974
thats because civ 6 is made by the team that made the civ 5 expansions, not vanilla. the director said that everything is included outside of world congress because they didnt have enough time to really make that work, but the game has a lot of new diplomacy features to make up for that.

Played EL for the first time last night, love the graphics of the game
-Played on the easiest difficulty to earn the mechanics of the game and this was a good choice, there are many things that the game doesn't explain to you. There are still a few things that I don't understand
-Eras pass way too fast imo. I know I played on the easiest but it was not because research speed was high, it was because the number of technologies you need to research to advance to other era is too low imo, and every era has lots of useful technologies. I think I unlocked 6th era without researching anything from 5th era, because I was still researching 4th era things. Also eras felt disconnected imo
-People complain about this game's combat but I liked it, better than civ games if you ask me. Also the number of military units is another complaint but, you can change the items of your military units, you can use assimilated military units, you can get generals from other races, etc. Was enough for me
-District system is cool but I guess it would be impossible to cover a whole region with districts because of 2 pop requirement, sad
-Didn't touch anything naval/sea related this game, will do it in the next one
And ı guess that's it, can't really say a few things for sure because I played on the easiest difficulty. But still fun game, I liked it

>>
>>152010076
You don't have to research everything in every era. Just pick what you need and go on. In fact, that is probably why you were progressing so fast as they get more expensive the higher era they're in.

It is possible to fill out regions with districts, but it is very difficult without the right hero.

No it doesn't. I don't know how fast these ships are moving during combat, but considering that they take seconds to close the gap and cover the distance between mars and earth in about 30 seconds they can't be moving too quickly on a relativistic scale
LAZOR BEEMS take minutes to get from earth to mars, but the best part about lasers is that you literally cannot see them coming. With the tracking technology we have, today, it's not any harder to hit a corvette 10 miles across than a battleship 10,000 miles across. Remember the absolutely fucking massive distances we're talking about, your target being the size of a dreadnought and your target being the size of a small planet doesn't make a difference.

How was it an empire if it only ruled over one people - the germanic people?
For it to be an empire it requires that one people conquer another people, thus you have a guy, the emperor, in charge of two or more people.
That is also why Egypt isn't an empire, since the Upper kingdom and the Lower kingdom are the same people.

Imperialism means conquering other people, and empire requires that you rule over more than one people.

Yeah, in the Age of Exploration and Imperialism maybe. As it were an Empire back then called back to the first and greatest by European reckoning at the time, the Roman Empire. It was quite literally a term of prestige. Plus the Holy Roman Empire ruled over many different peoples, to just lump them together as Germanic is hardly fair, especially when it held northern Italy for quite a bit and Italy was only partially germanized.
The Chinese Empire ruled over only Chinese and yet remained an Empire right from its conception, just to give another example.

Leader Ability: Bitter loser. Every time someone beats you to a wonder, they start hating you more.
Unique Unit: Panzer. Replacement for the tank, and moves further, and faster in rough terrain.

Eating spicy food ruins your taste. You get too used to it, and you can't enjoy regular food anymore.
Its like eating too much sugar in a way, everything seems bland, and you crave the flavor.

Its bad for your health, bad for your wallet, and long term bad for your culinary experience.
Its bad culture, born from machismo and seeing who can do themselves the most harm without blinking, and rationally we should be getting rid of it.

You're an idiot then because I enjoy Hunan and Sichuan cuisine but also enjoy things that are nigh tasteless like broiled whitefish and things that have strong taste but aren't spicy like almost all of Shanghai cuisine.
I mean damn, you could argue that meat ruins your experience too, meat eaters often can't enjoy pure vegetable dishes but should we just stop eating meat?

>Eating spicy food ruins your taste. You get too used to it, and you can't enjoy regular food anymore.
Proof? Anecdotally this isn't true for anyone I know.
>Its like eating too much sugar in a way, everything seems bland, and you crave the flavor.
So people like the taste? Does this mean we should ban everything people like to eat so they stop craving it? People crave pizza and burgers and lobster too.

Incorrect, it most likely started as a way to both preserve food and strengthen the taste.
>seeing who can do themselves the most harm without blinking
Are you buttblasted that you can't eat it or something? This is literally the argument I heard from my little sister before she got gud at it and completely stopped spouting this nonsense despite never liking spicy food.
>rationally we should all be getting rid of it
Rationally we should be eating some formulaic diet but food fortunately doesn't need to be rational, it's something to be enjoyed and something of an art. You can prefer impressionist art to realist art but you can't say one is objectively superior to the other.

>>152028432
Me too, although I don't dislike sweet flavors so much as preferring them to not be overwhelming.

>>152028456
I literally am arguing though, the reason it feels like a shitpost is because the other guy is making completely unsubstantiated claims that at least three people in this thread anecdotally don't match.
The second point I made literally shows how absurd the point he's making is, since the second point essentially says 'people like it therefore it must be bad'.
True, spicy food is bad for your health, but only significantly if you eat truly ridiculous amounts of the thing and it's stupidly strong, we're talking habenero tier.
"bad for your culinary experience" is nothing but an opinion and one that is unsubstantiated at that, while 'bad culture' is some sort of broad ad-homenim seeking to slander any and all who enjoy spicy food or create it as somehow below people who dislike spicy food.
The use of spices actually wasn't born from masochism, as I said it most likely started as a way to preserve food. Army rations during the Tang period were salted and spiced, you'd wash off the salt and eat it like that because it didn't rot and carried tons of nutrition.
The second to last point I'll admit is sort of shitposting but I do have an anecdotal argument, more than he has, while his own line was little more than shitposting anyway.
The last point is truth. Food is not rational. Food is something we enjoy or don't enjoy. I'm not picking on him for disliking spicy food - I'm picking on him for saying 'spicy food in general must be shit and a way to cover up your shit taste' instead of just saying 'I don't really like it'.

>>
>>152029186
General Tso's chicken is some slightly spicy sugary chicken nugget dish.
All of the neighborhood chinese places serve americanized chinese food. For real shit you have to find more specialty restaurants.

Shit tastes bland because we're kind of in a shitty diet twilight nether region where people have forgotten to cook good food because if you talk to 5 people each one will say something is bad and you shouldn't eat it be it salt, sugar, carbs, red meat, eggs, etc. We're kind of just relearning that the only bad shit is the artificial processed shit and nothing natural is bad unless you eat it in excess.

Barbecue sauce is the american go to condiment for when ketchup doesn't do it. But if you want a real taste for what barbecue is for the non culinarily handicapped, you can go on a pilgrimage throughout the south and sample regional barbecue, the different styles of which are extremely varied.

Basically America is a blend of reproduced bland shit, and really fucking good authentic shit.

We also have shitty mapo because American spice tolerance is as varied as the states themselves. My grandmother for instance had zero spice tolerance and thought just a light dusting of pepper made shit unbearable. Me, I can practically drink Salsa with diced jalapenos and it doesn't even phase me. Habanero salsa is pleasantly warm to fairly hot depending on the chilis themselves.

I have yet to find a good place for mapo near me.
>>
>>152032409
I went to the south for a while too
I can appreciate the bbq there but it just isn't to my taste, it felt too heavy for me although that's totally on me, I could definitely see why people praised it.
About spicy, the thing is I've legit never seen any American who could eat fuckall for spicy which is weird because the meme here used to be that Americans can eat spicy. Like you have to understand, mapo tofu is literally entry tier, it's like the peppered steak of spicy as far as the Chinese are concerned.

If you hit the southwest you'll see more spice. New Mexican Chiles are some good shit but still nothing really compared to some chinese spice. Dust is life, dust is love. The Dust must flow! You've got one less resource to worry about, research +Dust tech and spec your racial heroes into +Dust production. Place your cities in optimal locations for Dust, ignore industry.

Any desert with rivers/lakes is a goldmine. Put a +Dust specced hero on it, plus river tech and you have no problems.

First units are weak but Dust Bishops are Astartes-tier units. Don't be averse to using whatever minor faction you spawn with as your starting cannon fodder.

Pic related is the district cheat sheet.

Man I understand not liking the idea of just being elected class president to win, but diplomacy was great. It forced you to have to keep up your allegiances of city-states and navigate the web of complex alliances and international relations.

Culture is just sit on your ass and build lots of tourism and culture producing things.

>Musa I of Mali

>Goes on pilgrimage to Mecca

>Musa made his pilgrimage between 1324–1325. His procession reportedly included 60,000 men, including 12,000 slaves who each carried four pounds of gold bars and heralds dressed in silks who bore gold staffs, organized horses, and handled bags.

>Musa gave the gold to the poor he met along his route. Musa not only gave to the cities he passed on the way to Mecca, including Cairo and Medina, but also traded gold for souvenirs. It was reported that he built a mosque each and every Friday

>But Musa's generous actions inadvertently devastated the economy of the regions through which he passed. In the cities of Cairo, Medina, and Mecca, the sudden influx of gold devalued the metal for the next decade. Prices on goods and wares greatly inflated.

>To rectify the gold market, on his way back from Mecca, Musa borrowed all the gold he could carry from money-lenders in Cairo, at high interest. This is the only time recorded in history that one man directly controlled the price of gold in the Mediterranean.

Depends entirely on your situation. If you're going for a tourism victory you probably want to hold off on the first two projects until you get hotels to massively boost your tourism. If you're ahead on tech you most definitely do NOT want scholars in residence to be enacted or people will start catching up. If venice is in the game, and somehow still alive, then a city state embargo is probably on the cards.

Read the situation and act accordingly. Trying to get your religion the world religion if you have Tithes or some shit is probably the closest you get to a universal good thing to enact though.

Look, man, it's all well and good to admire the Aztecs' architecture now, five hundred years (is it really so little?) down the line. But when- regardless of your other beliefs, other motivations- you see the enormous temple covered in skulls and dripping in human blood, the air hot and thick with alien perfumes, the screams of the murdered muffled by everyone around you chanting to their "gods" who get off on this, and the people here have done it a million times and will do it again and again- I think your priorities would be a little different.

For mid-tier wonders sure, since you've either settled in anticipation for them, or there's still enough unclaimed land to do so, if we're talking Industrial age-tier stuff.

But for early wonders? Nah. That's pretty much natural or expand only, and if it's too early, then natural only. For something as strong as Stonehenge, it shouldn't come down to spawn RNG.

You're thinking of quick speed I think. I never play on fast speeds. And if you really want Stonehenge, unless it's in the first tech, you can rush a settle for it and build it in standard + higher most likely

IIRC Stonehenge came with the second tech in Civ V, and if you rushed a settler you could have a city by then in Civ V. Of course people who started with stone would have advantage over you, then this would draw you two to a war I guess. I personally like it because I always wanted geography to matter more in Civ V, everyone shouldn't be able to build whatever they want, etc. But I can understand why someone wouldn't like it

This is because the dogma of the day was that you don't desecrate bodies by cutting them up for science. Certain artists would steal bodies against the church and from church grounds to dissect and then hide images of within their art. Secularism isn't a magical panacea for scientific discover but historically it is what happened. What's not often mentioned is that the secular breakthrough came on the back of the dehumanization of man, the stopping of treating the dead with reverence is the same kind of thinking that lets your boss treat you like a cog in the machine. I would be really interested in a game that has a social cohesiveness mechanic that models the isolation created by this. Perhaps choosing secularism should reduce happiness?
