The current suggestion is to make it a once a month thing so based on the Shizuka birthday I'd suggest the first week of September.

I might be trying to do the impossible here, but I'm trying to get a grip on the Ranceverse as I go along playing through the series without hitting major plot spoilers in later games.

So far I've played Rance 01-02 and Sengoku Rance (which I'm going to replay once I get through all the games in IV-VI), and I'm late into Rance 03. For use later, I've got the Kichikuou Rance books and Rance the Complete.

One thing I'm really lost on, with all of the resources available for lore, is "when" is the right time to look into lore. Are there certain articles that should be read as a pretense before playing any of the games? Are there certain articles or things I should know about right now? What should be known before going into Kichikuou Rance? Rance IV? Are there other Alicesoft games that are must plays to know what's going on?

I'm pretty lost in the sea of materials available right now and am unsure on what I should be making sure I know. Some clarification on points to check out with each game would be appreciated.

If I were Mangagamer thinking from a strict business perspective, I wouldn't pick VI to start with. Better build a fanbase (not haniho, but a MG audience fanbase) around Rance first. My choice would ultimately go to 01, being a good starting point in the series. I'd let Maria continue doing Quest for a while longer so I can swiftly release it later.

Afterwards, I'd probably continue with 02, 03 and 04, if AS permits it. Only then would I pick VI.

01 is also a shitty start because it's not even really a good game for someone that isn't already a fan of the series. The gameplay is pretty shitty, the storyline pretty unimpressive and its only shining aspects are those that Rance fans will enjoy, and won't come off as anything more than an okay game for anyone new, or a terrible one for anyone that dislikes Rance's personality.

Why? It's the best gameplay in the series and the one game that can hook you and make you an addict for the series lore.

If you start anywhere else, you will get angry at the game mechanics for all of them. The reason to play the other games is to enjoy the story. Start any later and shit won't make sense, start any earlier, and Sengoku or 6 look dated as fuck. Actually, 5D should be like a connected with 6 or something. Damn, Daiakuji is great. I was excited to play another Daibanchou from the getgo, but I was completely blown away by it once I actually started playing. You should all learn moon just so you can experience its greatness.
I would actually say it has more in common with Sengoku in terms of gameplay than either Kichikuou or Daibanchou do.

I've never seen SR's manual (seriously, there must be one guy here who bought the game legitimately and owns a fucking scanner or a decent camera), but if shit like Yu-Gi-Oh! I've only played SR and 01 (SR first) and agree with him, it's not just the gameplay. SR gives you lots of rance's personality up-front, 01 tends to be 10-20 minutes of talking then an hour of the mediocre gameplay until you unlock the next short bit of story. On the other hand, KR and Daibanchou are downright unforgiving to newbies. Failing to save Sill in KR makes you feel bad and Kay-chan attacks at the start of year 4 if you take too long to conquer human territories. Daibanchou has the 100 turn limit, loyalty, weird ass character clearing requirements, and additional turn limits for factions. PGG rolls their tanks over you on turn 40 if you take too long and NPI does so on a later turn

I usually only play on 5 Star, so my memory is dead for this, but what are the jumps between the difficulties like? To my memory, 0 to 1 star isn't even noticeable, but I can't remember anything for 1 to 2 or 2 to 5.

Because X is coming. End of probably the most important game (not only eroge but in general) series. And even if by some miracle somebody translate it fast, no way I would play it without playing Quest and especially IX. So I need all three of them. With VI things are diferrent. I already know most of the story without playing it and I'm fine with playing it a few years later for example. Even without playing VI the series will feel complete for me.
