Which would be a fair point if SP were being honest about his dev decisions regarding Beetle in the first place. He isn't, so all arguments start with massive false assumptions on behalf of the arguing side.
>>
>>151237194
So basically SP is only integrating features he can easily throw in to try to lure ePSXe people away and into using RA?
>>
>>151234331
Mednafen isn't bug-free, fixing the remaining games doesn't appear to be a priority for now.

By definition Beetle cannot be bug free either, on top of that it might have a handful of bug of it's own..
>>
>>151236936
I'd be more inclined to take her word for it, if she optimized mednafen to the point where toasters can run it at full speed. Even byuu said it's possible to double the speed of his emu.

>>
>>151238030
>fixing the remaining games doesn't appear to be a priority for now.
She should fix FF7-8
>>
>>151237824

I think some of the features he refuses to backport he literally doesn't understand. He cannot ascertain what the goddamn code is doing, much less apply it to his own now rapidly diverging codebase.

Which would've been fine, had he just cleanported mednafen-PSX and then left it the fuck alone (let Simias do his little HW-rendering magic, polish it up real nice and fancy).

But noooooo...
>>
>>151238765
What's wrong with them?
>>
>>151238402

byuu has very little credibility left in the general emulation scene. While the masses yet worship him (or regard him as a genius fallen to madness), people "in-the-know" have raised many interesting and thoughtful challenges to both his overall truthfulness and general competence.

Some remaining mednafen-PSX bugs can indeed be fixed, but there is a core chunk of like, 5 or 6 (one them quite serious, as I recall) that require Ryphecha actually going in and emulating the hardware pipeline step by fucking step. Not only will that vastly increase CPU requirements (perhaps to unacceptable levels), some of the damn reverse-engineering has yet to be completed on her end.

And reverse engineering fucking sucks, my man. It sucks the rigid cock of Satan.
>>
>>151238952
Some of that code he refuses to backport is because it's C++11 crap that needlessly increases compiler requirements. It would need to be rewritten to not shit up the compiler compatibility and he doesn't feel like doing it because it's too little gain for what it's worth.

If you want a "cleanport", nothing is stopping you from doing it. It's open source after all. Especially since you seem to think you're better at this than SP.
>>
>>151238765
>>151239073

Nothing, once again a user has confused Beetle with mainline mednafen-PSX. Those are fixed (or were never broken, I can't seem to ascertain which from the Gitfeed alone) in mainline, broken in Beetle.
>>
>>151239635

>Especially since you seem to think you're better at this than SP.

There are no sacred cows in emulation.
>>
>>151239671
They're not broken in Beetle either.

inb4 some autist brings up that extremely minor flickering bug in one obscure area that can't be returned to, because obviously that breaks the whole game.
>>
>>151240054
>Who cares it's good enough :^)

The ZSNES mentality, everyone.
>>
>>151240161
You might have had a point if we were talking about badly broken games. But we're talking about differences stuff like that Shougi game or missing shadows some air plane game that no one cared about until byuu mentioned it. Literally the extreme edge cases of emulation.
>>
>>151240161

>>151240465

>I don't care

>This means that no one else cares
>>
>>151239508
>Not only will that vastly increase CPU requirements (perhaps to unacceptable levels)
Not worth it. Just fix the one really serious bug and let the minor bugs be if it means better performance.
>>
>>151239508
>people "in-the-know" have raised many interesting and thoughtful challenges to both his overall truthfulness
Do you have any examples?

>And reverse engineering fucking sucks, my man. It sucks the rigid cock of Satan.
Why is that? Sounds like fun to me, desu senpai. Only thing stopping me is time/money.

I get that accurate emulation requires more horse power, but i feel that the vast majority of devs do not give it their all, when it comes to optimizing their code. Many devs think clean code > optimized code.. Ryphecha could be right, but I'd like to see what cycle accurate code would look like, before I come to the conclusion that it's not possible to get full speed with.
>>
>>151240729
Or at least have an option like bsnes had, where there could be a Mednafen-PSX-Accuracy and a Mednafen-PSX-Performance or something like that.

For PS2 games what games are listed as "playable" on the PCSX2 wiki but have so many problems they might not as well be playable?

Alright, regarding my keyboard inputs not working with MAME, and I think I'm getting close to the issue-

I made some changes in my nVidia control panel based on recommended settings for MAME (G-Sync user), which used to work perfectly fine before, but now, after these changes, the keyboard inputs won't respond when a game is loaded, but the joypad works perfectly fine. I don't know if it's an nVidia issue or a MAME issue....

It must have something to with the nVidia graphics settings. When I remove the profile from program settings. it suddenly works. Is there anyone else i can report this problem to? I dunno if this only affects this version of MAME or what.

I realize no one here cares about G-Sync let alone MAME, but whatever.

sorry...i was unclear. Frame rates suck even with pushing things to the limit so software mode isn't very useful. And I can't stand playing in hardware mode with the texture issues so I'd rather just use a PS2 for games with a lot of problems.

>Is it possible to have each screen on a separate monitor?

Both screens have to stay in the same window, but you could still set up your monitors right to get it to work.

Though only on OSX for whatever reason there is actually an option to split the screens into different windows.

Also I guess you could use RA with netplay and custom viewports, but that would be really convoluted and would be a huge waste of CPU power.

just annoying to have to install stuff to hd (all the programs to do it over network are way outdated and dont' seem to work on my system) and I also have a projector set up in the attic for retro stuff but it's a pain running cables all the way up there and wi-fi sucks.

I have a big enough hd to install games I'd like to be able to take with me places as well as stuff to play in the attic so it's no big deal. My laptop has tons of stuff attatched to it so I try not to move it too much either-I don't want to run a cable all the way downstairs to it and I'd rather not have to move it every time I want to play stuff on the SMB network. Also too lazy right now to try to see if I can get a hacked pogoplug or something as a portable server for it.

Most stuff runs pretty well even on my laptop, but software mode sucks with any settings. Doesn't look much better than the PS2 on the projector and most games with mipmapping aren't stuff i need to fast forward through (one of my many big reasons for emulating...I'm looking at you, every Dragon Quest game).
>>

Mednafen is probably more accurate and doesn't have the stupid disc anti-piracy shit. Also it's freeâ„¢ software.

>>151250570
What's the advantage of doing that?

Without that pci saturn gpu thing it's a software renderer, which I imagine is a fixed resolution that's lower than the original's 352x224 and probably runs like shit.

Not to mention it's probably a nightmare to get running on current hardware.

IIRC it means that you need a framebuffer sync at every frame if you want the puzzle pieces to display correctly in the transitions. That's because the puzzle piece are computed on the CPU by accessing the GPU FB so it needs to be in sync when that happens.

>>
>>151304519

Mixing regular saves and savestates can be a bit risky since you can end up in weird situations. And yeah, savestates can break easily, for instance if you update your emulator.

If you only savestate like an "hibernation" of sorts, i.e. you savestate when you're done playing the game and you only reload the save once to resume your game you should be mostly fine, however I'd recommend using a regular save from time to time just in case, especially if you're about to update the emulator or something like that.

I personally only use savestates for testing purposes or for old games which don't support saving at all otherwise. If start menus bother me I just enable full speed mode to speed things up a bit.

Games have different requirements for your CPU on PS2. Something like SotC or ZoE are far more demanding than something like FFX or Disgaea. Disgaea may be the least demanding game, or at least it is what comes to mind anyway. Mid tier is simply games in between the extremes.

Are you kidding me nigga? Maybe if you're talking strictly in emulation terms it's probably mid tier since emulators aren't that multi threaded. For outside stuff it's almost close to mid tier, but not on it. 750Ti is on the same boat, except that it's a very low tier tier card. Take my computer as an example, this is mid tier hardware.
>>
>>151339909

6x rendering is just wasting gpu power for the most part, going above 3x(this removes shimmering for the most part) for anything but screenshots is stupid. FXAA cleans up the remaining aliasing on still frames and does not blur anything at all since PS2 games have low amounts of detail. And you should be sharpening your games regardless.

I'm not that other anon fishing for (You)s. The 970 right now is high mid tier given that the RX 480 and the 1060 are the new mid tier, the latter bringing 980 performance throughout and the former being a monster in Vulkan and DX 12. The 1070 is high tier along with the 1080. Pascal Titan X would be enthusiast. Do you even bother checking out GPUs? This generation was supposed to be exciting given that we're jumping from 28nm straight to 14nm-16nm. It's disappointing that the release has been shit so far however.
>>

The games are not going to allow you to keep getting that without updating to 10xx. It's always like this. New line comes out and suddenly the games eventually force you to buy into it to stay 1080p60
>>
>>151342934
On Nvidia
-no stock, practically a paper launch
-founder's edition bullshit jacking up the prices even more
-ridiculous prices, around $430 for 1070, $700 for 1080, $1200 for cut down Titan X
-nothing new on the table apart from GDDR5Xon Nvidia's side, still no HBM2 on consumers
-still can't run UHD at 60fps or 1440p at 120fps
-1060 is a pretty nice buy at $250 if you can find it

On AMD
-stock problems as well, might be because of coin miners
-no option for high end
-RX480 is incredible at $200 if you can find it at that price
-underwhelming RX470
-RX460 is a joke, but at least it's sort of cute
-Vega probably next year with HBM2

It's a shit show.

You have the BIOS pack from the wiki, yeah?

It wouldn't load on my end either. Apparently GGPX looks for "bios_CD_J.bin" specifically in the system directory (you can verify this from the terminal output or checking the firmware section in core information within RA).

I just copied jp_mcd1_9112.bin to bios_CD_J.bin and it works. GGPX boots up into the CD player instead of straight into the game so it might be wrong, but if you press the CD-ROM button the game boots and seems to be running alright on my end.

Thinking about making a sort of casual RetroArch launcher for desktop with some basic ROM management features like filtering ROM lists by No-Intro tags without messing with the actual files and directories themselves, maybe also warn you if you're missing games or the hashes don't match with the latest release. Also wanted to simplify the process of per-core configuration, input mapping, and shader settings. Probably some other stuff too, haven't thought a lot about it yet.

Any interest in something like this? Pretty sure there's been similar projects, but I don't see much about them so I don't know. Will create a repo once I figure out this VS plugin.

Is anyone using stuff like this for phone emulation?

I really want something like this for my Galaxy S6 but I don't know what these things are even called. Anyone wanna recommend me one?
>>
Whats a good cheap quadcore cpu for emulation. I currently have a g3258 clocked at 4.2 or 4.3 and its pretty good for emulation, but I program a lot and I need something with more cores. Though Id like to be able to still have the same emulation potential on a cpu with more cores. Not looking for something as cheap as the g3258 ($70) but I dont wanna pay $350 just because I like to emulate games. Id rather just get an 13 1440 for like $100 and swap cpus when needed.

If you're not willing to grab at-least a 4690k / 5675C / 6600k (I mean technically you could grab a slightly smaller quadcore but you loose overclocking and you still won't find one for less than 160 bucks) forget about it you won't gain near enough performance to justify paying for it.

You'll be buying a new motherboard pretty fast. Just save up and get a quad core.

Are there any methods of further overclocking mednafen in Retroarch?
I like the overclocking results in Soul Reaver as it runs at almost constant 30fps now instead of dropping to 15 but there are some sections where it dips to 20fps from 30 so I wanna overclock it even more.
Also what is the fucking point of widescreen hacks in PS1 emulators? None of them support the increased FOV so you get shit popping in the periphery in every single game.
>>
>>151380231

>Are there any methods of further overclocking mednafen in Retroarch?

Not currently, no

>Also what is the fucking point of widescreen hacks in PS1 emulators? None of them support the increased FOV so you get shit popping in the periphery in every single game.

It works decently with some games, very poorly with others. There are some games where you won't see a lot of missing geometry on the edges. Even with a few glitches some people may prefer that to black bars or a wrong aspect ratio.
>>
>>151380368
>It works decently with some games
Is there a list of them?
On a tangential note, how does the GTE accuracy hacks compare between mednafen and PCSX-R? I remember seeing a screenshot of a PS1 game with actual straight lines which mednafen doesn't seem to be doing, at least not in the case of Soul Reaver
>>
>>151380545

It worked pretty well with Spyro and Tomb Raider 3 IIRC, but it's not like I tested it very thoroughly.

PCSX-R has a much better GTE accuracy hack, the one in mednafen is borderline useless.

I haven't done anything fancy with ZFS or BTRFS. The 4TB drives serves as mirrors for the anime and roms and one 2TB external is for the boot drive and the other main drive. I'm planing on buying six 4TB drives and putting them on a RAIDz2 configuration for 16TB of storage with redundancy, putting them on a NAS box or building a small home server. Hopefully it'll be my last hard drive purchase with how insane SSDs are moving in terms of raw capacity.

They have to get their shekels somehow, so it's obviously going to be enterprise stuff. For instance, Samsung's 16TB drive costs around $5000. The point is that eventually it'll go down to consumers. 1TB drives cost a fortune several years ago and now you can find them for $200 on a good sale.

A few days ago I posted about having problems with ripping Animal Crossing PG via Cleanrip 2.0 on the Wii.

Basically, every time I tried to rip the game it would give me an error 80% of the way through. Meanwhile I have already ripped like 5 other games with no errors whatsoever.

I took my disc to my local record store and had them clean it professionally, and as far as I can tell there are no scratches on it anymore. However, now when I try to rip the game, it rips all the way through then at the end says "no seek complete." The game loads in Dolphin up to the Nintendo logo then dies.

Has anyone ever encountered this? Is there any way to fix it? Last time I played the game on the Wii it ran perfectly fine, so I have no clue why it's not working. If this just wont work then I guess I will bite the bullet and just download it off the web like every normal person who emulates shit.

You're probably being retarded on purpose, but here's a big list of all the things on that board:

- The big chip in the bottom right with the "MX" label it the ROM for Doubutsu no Mori. That's where the game is stored.
- The long skinny chip north of it is where the save is stored. Pretty sure it's flash but don't quote me.
- The silvery circle is the battery to keep the clock running when the game is off.
- The little 8-pin chip in the upper-middle is some 74-series logic, not sure what that's doing
- The chip in the bottom left labeled "RTCK-NUS" is the clock chip.
- The chip to the right of the clock chip labeled CIC-NUS-6102A is the sercurity chip. Every N64 game needs one of these.

> what about arcade games
There's a lot of variation in arcade systems. Not all of them are "far more complex". Pictured left is an arcade game from Cave. They base pretty much all of their games on this hardware now so I can't tell which game it is. There's really not very much on here: there's a CPU, a graphics chip (the Altera FPGA), some RAM and some flash for storage. "The game" is stored in the flash chips.

There are some super complicated arcade boards out there though. A great example of this is Namco's System 21 which ran games like Air Combat. The number of chips in this thing breaks the laws of economics (and time, and space). This system stores its games in ROMs, but it uses quite a few of them. Some systems would segregate their data into different domains, so there would be sound ROMs attached to the sound processor, graphics ROMs attached to the graphics board, program/data ROMs attached to the CPU and so on.

Lots of ways to make pretty pictures on a TV and I think arcade games tried them all. For further reading, head to System16 and check out some of Sega and Namco's early 3D arcade sets.

> tall as hell cart

Speaking of, let's have a look at one of those and figure out they're so tall.

If you look at this cart, you can see that the majority of the height is dedicated to the stick of RAM on the left side. This is the "ROM" that can be rewritten by devs. At the top is a big blue connector to hook up to a PC. The chip labeled "ALTERA FLEX" is probably a RAM controller & glue logic for the N64 cart bus, i.e. a converter from standard RAM to N64 ROM. Below it is that secutiy chip that all N64 carts have.

This is just one type of tall N64 dev cart. Other versions ditched the stick of RAM, and instead had a ton of flash chips onboard. If someone could post a pic of that, that would be great.

Oh yeah I should've figured the reason they were so tall was due to including rewritable stuff in there for easier testing. I would've thought they would've made a more elegant solution for N64 testing but I guess the tech was still somewhat arcaic then.

Okay. If I were to get into talking with someone in China about producing an ideal low-priced game pad, what features would you guys want to see in such a product?
>>

Yeah, things are a lot better now. Back then they were making dev boards with 4 megabyte flash chips, and they were huge. You needed 16 chips to get the "full" 64 megabytes of storage. Nowadays, you can buy a 64drive with the same capacity in 2x 32MB RAM chips, and it's a fraction of the cost. Living in the future is great!

A man said this about Chrono Cross when it came out.

>Chrono Cross totally rocks! The game mechanics can be described thusly: Take every system Square has ever made, throw them into a blender, squeeze in some cool element stuff... which is a LITTLE like LoD's, put it on full frappé. Amazingly enough, it's simplistic, strategic, and fun. Heck, I don't even really miss EXP, MP, or the initiative meter. Oh, and yes, it DOES have the same feel as Chrono Trigger.

How much does playing a game at release rather than much later distort your vision of it? Or does playing it too late also have detriments due to graphical issues?

Well if a game is good but another game massively improved on the formula later then playing it at release makes a huge difference.

There's also a few case where if you play games long after they're released you start having running into situation where you don't know who copied who (hydlide vs zelda, DOOM3 vs HL2 etc)
>>
>>151463036
>>151463723
Well, if someone decided to make what I'm talking about, it would be 100% generic parts. But you'd have it being made by a Chinese domestic who could ensure better QA. So it'd be a generic style controller, but it'd be a damn solid generic controller.

>>
>>151471228
Generally revisions were simply bugfixes and other minor shit, so unless you want to look up/discover the changes because you're speedrunning or whatever, then you should generally just use the latest one, yeah.

For example, the original revision of Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen had a bug where only the first word of a pokemon's category would show (eg Pidgey was a "Tiny Pokemon" instead of a "Tiny Bird Pokemon") and that was the only thing that changed between revisions.

OoT if the only case I know of where shit got censored between revisions.

You should consider either getting a PS3 controller or a PS2 controller converter USB, I bought an adapter for 2 controllers that costed like, 3 euros or so, it works for both PS3 and PC.
Games that make use of them are for instance Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid, especially 3, in hold ups you risk killing them right away.

Otherwise, PCSX lets you specify the pression you are applying on the button.

Is it a Retroarch core already?

How far is it?

My understanding is that Saturn has some docs, and Yabause + other emus have solved many of the problems of Saturn emulation. It's just that no one is interested in putting all the pieces together. So a decent Saturn Emu could be made pretty well.

Then after that you hit the road block of the unknowns and unknown unknowns. That would require real reverse engineering.

Did Ryefetcher even write CPU cores from scratch?

Yes

It's a shame that this doesn't emulate better. It's clearly a very good game.

That's cool, I remember other mednafen cores were borrowed though

Infer based on how graphically impressive it is.

Phone-fag here, I have a question-
I've got a LG G2 D800 and I run RA with a DS4 connected via micro-USB male to male cable. As I run the games, it doesn't seem to be fullspeed, running at 58fps and is noticeably slightly choppy when scrolling, on top of occasional stuttering audio that happens every 5 minutes or so. I've only ran the Nestiopa core.

Is there any way I can fix this or is my phone not powerful enough for a fullspeed crackle-free experience, or do I need a new phone for that? Been shopping around for something more powerful...

Phone could have an old refresh rate. Open the video settings and go the Estimated Monitor Refresh and let it run for a bit.

The mednafen one is absurd for a early release (so alpha that not even PAL games is working right now)

Is it really working this well already? I've never played Saturn before so my weekend's gonna consist of Bomberman, Clockwork Knight and Parodius instead of everything I really should be doing if the libretro core is in good shape.

My take is that making something as good as yabause should be pretty easy. It's all open source and you just re-impliment it. Going beyond Yabause would be where the difficulty relies.

Which can take forever on emugen, not to mention it's going to be over an hour after we actually hit bump limit before the thread is pruned.

Just don't make threads early, retard.

Bump limit

now go fuck yourself

Still too soon, but I'll help you out. Try to wait for bump limit next time (it's 750). We aren't the worst offenders but it's really too cramped for early thread creation on this board.
