I can't figure out CMake, it's so much easier to do "make -j5" on static makefile.
>>

There really is no reason to go GL now if one isn't already using it. it's dead tech, the API is abandoned. Soon it won't even be supported.
>>
>tfw you want to write yet another libretro frontend

>>
>>150955864
Are you retarded? GL is going to be around for a long time and all older hardware that doesn't support Vulkan will need it anyway.
>>
>>150955864

OGL has better backwards compatibility, you won't need any Vulkan features for PS1 emulation anyway
>>
>>150955984
>GL is going to be around for a long time
Why?

>older hardware that doesn't support Vulkan will need it anyway.
Made to be deprecated.

>OGL has better backwards compatibility,
No shit since Vulkan doesn't support OGL, that's the only way it would have any backwards compatibility.
>>
>>150955902

There's plenty of room for more libretro frontends that can do things in ways that RetroArch cannot.
>>
>>150955864
>it's dead tech
You know people still write fixed function GL code right? The programmable pipeline was introduced 12 years ago and people still write fixed function code.
I agree Vulkan is the future but it ain't replacing GL overnight.
>>
>>150956310
No sense in writing code for an API that will be dead in 5 years when you can write code for an API that will be alive in 5 years
>>
>>150956403
Nigga just because it will stop evolving doesn't mean it'll be dead. People will still be using GL in 10 years from now, trust me. At some point the GL drivers will probably be rewritten using Vulkan itself.

I hear people saying Adobe Flash is dead since 2007 and there's still plenty of Flash around the internet.
>>
>>150955864
Check your Vulkan privilege.
>>
>>150955839

CMake and make don't do the same job, despite the similar names. CMake is more like a configure script.

Yeah but that becomes very cumbersome if you have to move the cursor away every time you want to change the tool. Maybe something with the duration of the press instead?

Your design is pretty cool though, what's it written in? If it's compileable it should be pretty easy to port to the actual console, there's no GPU or anything, just a 32x32bit memory mapped LCD.

I'm looking for NES games to play on my Vita's retroarch set-up.

What titles should I try out onto my Sony taco?
>>
>>150961476

There really isn't a whole lot to know, it's a simple ARMv4/Thumbv1 CPU (ARM7TDMI, same CPU as the GBA AFAIK). You don't even need to bother with assembly, GCC and probably LLVM can target it easily.

For the rest the peripherals are so barebone that they're generally very easy to use, although they're also very limited. For instance there's no SPU, just a DAC connected to a CPU port basically. So if you want to output some sound you have to write each sample yourself at the correct time (no buffer or anything). Super CPU-intensive but it's good enough for basic noises. The LCD is directly mapped in memory so it's just one bit per pixel and you read/write it like RAM.

Really trivial stuff, the only tricky part is to get the code into the device I suppose. You need a way to upload saves to a memory card.
>>
>>150962242

also i've seen some videos and psx emulation looks like it's coming along nicely
>>
>>150962395

No$ mentions a hack using a parallel cable to wire the console as well. Although these days it might be less practical than a microcontroller...

I think the good battery life is because it's basically an ARM CPU and nothing else. And the CPU can be downclocked to run at less than 100kHz or even stopped completely and hibernate until an interrupt occurs. Since the games are so limited it's not like you're going to play them for 10 hours straight anyway.

I remember that back then I really wanted one, but they never got officially released outside of japan I think. Only yesterday did I manage to upload Chocobo World from my FFVIII save, 16 years later. In practice I would probably have been very disappointed with the device I think. If you ever owned a Dreamcast VMU it's basically as shitty as that except that the VMU also had terrible battery life.

The screen is way too small to do anything more than a tamagochi, there are only 5 buttons and they're really crappy and to top it all there's only 2KB of RAM which seems severely undersized to me for a portable console released in 1999 (that's a quarter of what the original gameboy had internally, not counting cartridge extensions).

It's closer to a fancy watch than a portable console...

Gimmick! is the best game on the system, but play the original 60Hz Famicom version instead of the butchered Scandinavian NES release. Battletoads is also unironically good.

SNES games randomly don't seem to run in Retroarch, I used Mednafen and bnses mercury. Earthbound runs just fine, but Secret of Mana and Super Mario Kart don't. Not sure what's going on.

My PSX games run just fine after I add them to my collection. SNES games don't.
>>
>>150961901
IMO the greatest games on the system:
Kirby's Adventure
Earthbound Zero (Use balance patches)
Gun-Nac
Gimmick!
Dragon Warrior 3 (although SNES version is better)
Gargoyle's Quest 2
Mega Man 6
Castlevania 3 (Japan)

The NES got a lot of great games late in it's life.
>>

Mario Kart needs specific BIOS files if you're using bsnes and mednafen, which also uses bsnes as it's SNES core.

Having the menu entries as a list isn't exactly the problem. You can display the list as a grid without major issues but the underlying menu input handling code would make the driver unusable unless you spend sometime working around it.

You'd have to reimplement all the relevant menu backend code inside the menu driver itself. That'd be a major pain in the ass.

The problem with linux is the problem with all open source stuff I think. The people who can improve it are not end users and therefore fail to cater to a very wide audience. RA is a bit similar in a way.

I'm a dev and I've been using Linux and BSDs for more than a decade and I feel so completely frustrated when I use Windows. I think many coders are like me, Linux is mostly good enough as it is. Give me a terminal, a web browser, a compiler and an editor and I'm mostly good to go.

It's like when people complain that mednafen has no GUI or stuff like that, most of the time people who want that stuff don't know how to code and people who know how to code don't care enough to do it.

The only thing that could change the status quo is if some big player decides to invest money to get the linux desktop up to speed for the masses. At some point we thought Valve might do that but it looks like they half-assed it. Maybe Windows is simply not bad enough to warrant replacing (yet).

Switched to glide and it works now. That's with Jabo's.

I was using Shuunyan's Audio and Hatcat's Static RSP before. Should I just keep those as the defaults to avoid problems? The wiki says they're good but I think they're fairly old.

Eh, there's no good audio plugin currently. They all have flaws, but Shunyuans actually causes the emulator to crash sometimes.

same with deluge. same with my operating system. like wtf?
how hard is it to program competent software that actually works? there are so many emulators that are missing basic features such as proper scaling and configuring buttons on a controller to a hotkey I hate this world. I literally have to restart every program atleast once a day.

Looks like the UI is bugged. I was able to select the option by using arrow key or mouse wheel.
>>
>>151020371
I'm not managing that unfortunately. Would you mind seeing where the option is in your .cfg files so OI can just add it like that?
>>
>>151020501
Actually, my bad. The current UI isn't bugged, I was using the wrong version. I had an old version in my directory for comparison purposes and got the versions mixed up. The latest pj64glide's UI should work fine.

Anyway, if you want to edit cfg file, find [Glide64] and the option is called aspect. For instance if I set to 16:9, it says aspect=1, if I set to "original", it says aspect=3. If i set to 4:3 it deletes aspect from the file.

Actually I think I know what you are saying now. Your tab is missing because you probably have "hide advanced settings" enabled in the emulator.

The ROM Police raided my house and found all my USB gamepads and console-to-USB adapters. They grilled me for hours about my knowledge of 5th-gen and earlier consoles. I resisted for a while but finally cracked when they said that SNES Shadowrun was a simple port of the Mega Drive Shadowrun and it all came rushing out of me, like that Seinfeld episode where Jerry denies watching soap operas. The judge sentenced me to hard labour and I had to finish every Tiger Game.Com came three times on genuine hardware before I was released. It hasn't been easy getting my life back together. I'm a Registered SNES Offender so I'm not allowed within 100 feet of a frontend or fullset. My parole officer does regular checks to make sure I'm logging into Xbox Live and increasing my Gamerscore. On the plus side, I do charity work speaking at high schools so kids know about the dangers of emulation and don't end up like me.

As another anon said, he has defamed several devs (mostly off the record, saying things behind peoples' backs) and has pitted devs against each other several times. Has anyone in this game made their own iso? Is it worth it or does it never come out particularly well and need fine tuning? I'm trying to download something and it's taking forever.
>>
>>151057247
Depends. It's easier to download .bin/.cue's off Archive.org for PSX titles, so I don't dump my PSX titles. However, it's so fucking easy to dump GameCube, Wii, 3DS, Wii U, PS2, and Xbox titles, so I usually just dump those ones myself.

>Is it worth it or does it never come out particularly well and need fine tuning?
Don't be retarded. Dump your shit properly in the proper formats. .bin/.cue for PSX, .iso for basically everything else. Check the wiki if you're not sure what you're supposed to be dumping your games as
>>
>>151057247

I only dump games when I test something and I want to make sure I have the exact same version of the game running on the console and on the emulator.
>>
>>151057875
I've never done it before, I've only really just started getting into this
>>
>>151057247
>>151057875
>.bin/.cue for PSX, .iso for basically everything else.
.bin/.cue for anything on a CD (technically including PS2 CD only games as well but PCSX2 is shit enough that it doesn't matter and most homebrewq require converting to .iso to use them anyways so do what you want), .iso for DVDs and mini-DVDs

CDmage is supposed to be very good for dumping CDs so that's what I use and never had any particular problems with it (I mostly use it to extract audio tracks and .XA files though but I don't recall running into problems dumping CDs)
For DVDs just use whatever can dump to .iso and lets you select the read speed (warning about read errors would be nice too because some just don't) DVDdecrypter is actually capable of doing just that iirc
>>
>>151059082
What are you thinking of dumping exactly?
>>
>>151059189
A PS2 game, or do I need to be more specific than that?
>>
>>151059350
If you want to dump a PS2 game, just put it in your PC's disc drive and dump it as a .iso if it's a DVD game, or a .bin/.cue if it's a CD game (the underside of the disc will be blue instead of white).

If you're worried that you didn't do it right, just look up your game on Redump.org and compare the .md5 hashes between your dump and what the .md5 is supposed to be.
>>
>>151059528
>compare the .md5 hashes between your dump and what the .md5 is supposed to be.
Imagine you were explaining this to an idiot and do it again
>>
>>151059627
So you dump your PS2 game and want to make sure you did it properly. But how would you do that? Well, you go to Redump.org, look up your game, and look at the .md5 has for that game. For Final Fantasy X:

57998b60010b7583c423d5b2142ad1a3

What does this mean to me exactly? Well, I download a program that checks the .md5 hash of my files, and use it to check the hash of my Final Fantasy X.iso.

If the .md5 hash checker matches what Redump says it should be, then I have a good dump. If it doesn't, then I dumped the game improperly. If I know that I didn't dump the game wrong, then either the Redump hash is wrong, or my disc is damaged. There's a 99% chance it's the latter.

That's about as easily as I can describe it.
>>
>>151059627
Go here
http://redump.org/discs/system/ps2/
Find your game

Now you should see something like that
http://redump.org/disc/4602/

Look at the "Tracks" part
There's a section marked CRC32 / MD5 / SHA-1
Those are hashes meant to check the integrity of your file, if they match your file is the same as their file which is supposed to be clean.

To get your hashes just drop your .iso you just made on a program that lets you check hashes like hashmyfiles
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/hash_my_files.html
It will take some time but it will come back with a bunch of hashes just make sure you compare MD5 since it's the simplest
>>
>>151060113
I could also mean you found a new revision of the game, but that's also pretty unlikely. At least in FFX's case.
>>
>>151061878
The product code wouldn't match then though, different revisions get a different product code.

Can someone please tell why the hell most of my custom textures are loading in Dolphin, but not all of them? I've been working on an HD texture pack for Gotcha Force, and for the most part it works great, but a few random textures here and there just refuse to load. I've cross-checked the filenames, made sure they were upresed already, set the texture accuracy to Safe, they should be working just like everything else. It doesn't make sense.

Apparently, the textures were dumped at 32. I'm using a waifu2x program to batch convert them, and it had an option that says "Output depth bits" with selections of 8 and 16. I foolishly took this to mean that the files would actually come out with either 8-bit or 16-bit color depth, but no, it either keeps the color depth the same or doubles it.

Clearly the images are not the only thing that's out of their depth.

Take Nintendo Power issues off of Archive for no good reason (they can't make money from them anymore)

Because of pic related.
But it's amazing that Nintendo cares more about those obscure magazines than that huge No-intro rom collection that contains roms of all their pre-gamecube handhelds/systems.

I'm sure they have known of the existence of that collection for years.

I've actually been thinking about uploading my complete collection of Nintendo DS roms to archive.org since it seems Nintendo cares very little about this.

Someone not long ago uploaded all of the Nintendo Power magazine editions to archive.org. Nintendo got wind of it and took it down. I found another place that had the copies and snagged them for offline personal backup so Nintendo could never get their claws on it.

The problem is I am picky about quality. "good enough" isn't. Many of the copies online are missing pages, and the scans are sub par. I will likely need to break out my own IRL copies and redo them to higher standards.

Because preservation.
>>

>>
>>151131169
For the same reason that shit that isn't even owned by companies are taken down. If a human was actually the one who went "oh shit they got our property!" They would have taken the extra two seconds to find more stuff.

The reason they can host ROMs is because they have an exemption that specifically grants them right to archive:
>Computer programs and video games distributed in formats that have become obsolete and which require the original media or hardware as a condition of access.
They can't just host literally anything.
>>
>>151136012

No, you're not thinking like a lazy sack of shit enough. You have to get REALLY. FUCKING. SLEAZY.

"Nintendo" as your are thinking of it was neither aware nor involved. They hire some other dubious fuckhead to do their media policing, who takes the cash and promptly deploys some web-based crawler 'bot hacked together by an illegal Romanian kid in his mother's basement.

It crawls the web 24/7 using the most crufty keyword-matching algorithm you could possibly conceive, and when it thinks it has a match for "theft of the client's intellectual property", it reports back to the gaggle of dubious fuckheads. They in turn, rather than carefully scrutinize the entry and apply applicable law, realize that they are paid based on "perceived need" (rather than to perform any function actually beneficial to society) and instruct RoManiaN Kr4w1b0t to begin spamming DMCA letters at the poor sap running the website it has targeted all the live-long day. And since there is no penalty to filing a fraudulent DMCA notice but several for even _looking_ like you're ignoring one, it's just safer to yank the content and sort it out later with the goddamned lawyers.

Except in this case, clearly they'd lose. And even if they didn't, there is absolutely nothing stopping Romanian Crawlbot from finding the same goddamn thing a few months later and starting the whole shitshow over again.

openemu doesnt know anything about improving emulators, while libretro has done parallel, beetle psx gl renderers, network support in gambatte, threaded rendering in vbs next, etc. its not just a bunch of lame 'upstream-compatible' emus, its ones with significant added value.

openemu is all flash and no substance.

LOL, how can you be so blind and deluded?

People have ALWAYS been complaining about retroarch GUI, not necessarily because of the ugly monochrome look but largely for the badly organized menu bloated with cryptic options that often do not do anything on console and for the lack of stability / quality checks as well as regressions between each versions.

No wonder RetroArch is now often called RegressionArch among various console scenes.

>>
>>151140343
All of this is caused by SP refactoring retroarch code all day long then breaking and not testing things on console side. It would not happen if there was a serious and competent leader on-board...

>>
>>151140605

so volunteer on the console side then.

seriously you sir are a huge asss hat and you know jack about actual development. there is no codebase on earth that tries to cover do many platforms and with such modular code. keeping it all working is a garguantuan task that he honestly does not get enough credit for, i think if you were looking at your regular corpocrat company youd find much worse breakage, its called windows 10 rolling updates.

anyway consoles will become a priority once again, they obviously werent for a long time.
>>
>>151140737
Probably not unless he actually does serious regression testing before pushing each release. Another problem is that he does not fully understand how retroarch code works (which is mainly TheMaister work) so he is lacking a global vision of his changes potential side-effects.

I guess it would keep the nightly builds safe for some days at least.
>>
>>151141081
Sounds like an excuse made by an incompetent (or lazy) coder.
>>
>>151141092

mame devs dont know everything about their own codebase either, just ask AWJ.

neither do dolphin devs know everything about their own codebase either.

neither do yabause devs know anything about Ari64 dynarec.

neither do yabause devs know everything about desmume since yoyofr wrote it.

neither does byuu know everything in bsnes /. higan since most likely blargg / anomie / Nach or even AWJ wrote it.

>>
>>151141092
Seems crazy that he has refactored this much and yet somehow doesn't understand how RA's code works. I'm not sure I entirely can believe that.
>>
>>151141345

He didn't understand how parts of mednafen-PSX worked. Sometimes I think that's why he took the approach that he did vis-a-vis backporting things from mainline.
>>
>>151141252
Didn't byuu have an actual policy that if he doesn't understand something and it's more than ~5 lines it doesn't get in? Basically what kept the improved latency patch from getting in to his newer Higan builds.
>>
>>151141469
Well I guess I can see him not understanding how all the emu cores like mednafen and such work. That makes sense. He isn't an expert at emulator code. But the code for RA itself on the other hand...
>>
>>151141482

That sounds rather shortsighted of him.
>>

I agree. But at least he does not negatively impact their projects, like it does with SP "working" on retroarch. Do you know when he will finally rage-quit for the sake of the project?
>>

But that's the thing: if you don't understand that shit, why are you fucking with it so much? Why not take a page outta OpenEmu's book and cleanport that shit? Then you don't _need_ to know how much of it works.
>>
>>151141345
You don't need to understand the whole thing when all you are doing is rewriting code comments so it compiles on MSVC or simplyfing basic functions. You just need to be able to read C/C++ but understanding the whole design of something like retroarch requires some more serious competence..

branches are just an annoyance for small projects where one person is doing most of the work. They only make sense for large projects where many people are doing different things to the code.

Besides, all external pull requests are necessarily on seperate branches already.

How are you coming to this conclusion? Obviously there are parts he doesn't understand like Netplay or Vulkan code, which is why he doesn't touch them. You can be certain he understands the menu code or the runloop code though.

I can tell you've never done serious software development in your life based on assumptions you are making about how it actually works.

Microsoft will likely just wait for Win32 to break sufficiently, then refuse to fix any of it. This has its advantages over the more ham-handed approach Apple is using. If you simply wait for API drift to take its toll you can mark the whole damn thing as "deprecated" at a later date and not look like such a douche to the casual enduser; because obviously if it's that "broken" and you're willing to provide a perfectly good alternative, then you've done all you can, right?

Apple is still fundamentally a hardware company, and that business model is not compatible with the software services direction Nadella wishes to go.

G-Sync fag here. I made a post a while back regarding my keyboard inputs not working with MAME, and I think I'm getting close to the issue-
I made some changes in my nVidia control panel based on recommended settings for MAME, which used to work perfectly fine before, but now, after these changes, the keyboard inputs won't respond when a game is loaded, but the joypad works perfectly fine. I don't know if it's an nVidia issue or a MAME issue....

>Aren't there ways to write in other languages like C and such that allow the compiler to translate it better into machine code and thus run faster?
You can write efficient C code that generates good machine code, but in some cases, the compiler just can't do as good of a job as a skilled assembly coder. Emulation is something that especially benefits from using assembly code. For ZSNES, I'm sure the lower latency has more to do with the Direct Draw code rather than the fact that it's optimized well.

Be real with me dudes, are there any games worth emulating from GBA or SNES if I've never played any and thus have no nostalgia for them?

I like the idea of emulating old games, but every time I go out to look for games to play all I see is dumb shit like Pokemons, Marios, and FFs, all of which I assume only emulated nowadays for nostalgia.

I guess my question is: have any GBA or SNES games held up to this day and can be fun playing for the first time 10+ years after their release?
