How would /owg/ fix defensive heroes?
A big issue with the current meta is how there's an entire class of character that's completely worthless past a competent skill level. Torb used to be decent at defending, but for some reason they made it so it takes twice as long to upgrade his turret without improving any other aspect of his character, rendering that ability useless once the opposite team starts getting a foothold. The rivet gun is great, but that doesn't justify picking him over another hero who can plink people at a distance better.

I think one of the strongest issues with defensive characters is how one note they are. They don't have the dynamism that offense heroes have and as a result, are really predictable and really easy to counter, Bastion is probably the worst about this. I'm fine with a couple heroes being casual play tier, not half the goddamn cast.

Junkrat, Mei and Hanzo don't need fixing. Widow is also pretty strong in capable hands. Bastion needs to die.
I think the problem with them is, a lot of people use them as offensive characters. Going off alone to fight the enemy team instead of guarding the flanks, controlling the area and disposing of priority targets. Snipers and Bastions in particular have never heard of moving to a safe spot when the enemy targets them.

You fix defensive heroes by first fixing defense as a role.
With the way the game currently is (this is mostly for Capture points maps like Anubis, Hanamura, Volskaya) offense has to only win ONE fight to get a full cap or almost a full cap.
Defense on the other hand has to essentially teamwipe the enemy team for the entirety of the round timer, over and over, without a single fuckup.
They need a game-mode like TF2's 5CP, where both teams fight over a set of control points in order, each point being closer and closer to the enemy base.

Defensive heroes are fine. They are effective in casual games and medium-to-low skill games which is where you would expect heroes focused on area denial and survival to excel.

There's no way to make the defensive characters viable at a higher level without larger team sizes or giving them comparable DPS to the offensive classes, at high skill a character's TTK is going to be the most important aspect.

Well, I reached level 25. Time to start playing competitive I guess.

The issue is not that they are weak picks for tourney play, because balancing around that is silly. It's more that once the team knows how to organize even a little bit, they are fucked. Easy mode is how you win. If you want to have a challenge, go to quick play, but comp is when you do the easiest, most consistent, most effective strat you can manage. If it's hard, it's almost never worth doing. Easier is more consistent.

This is why despite Genji's power, Reaper still usually takes higher pickrate from him right now. He's more consistent in this double tank meta.

It seems like no matter what I do we're just getting steam rolled not even getting through the first point

People bring up skill cap with Genji a lot as if he isnt easy to play.

Shurikens are a little hard to land when you first start playing him, thats about it.

You still have a "Reset on elim" dash that lets you move faster in a single direction than anyone other than tracer, and even then she cant dash upwards

You still have deflect, essentially allowing you to fuck up enemies without even needing to hit them

You still have insane mobility on top of everything else, with the same hp as most other heroes.

And then the insane range of his ult and how quickly he can get to you, its just ridiculous.

Go and play other 200 hp heroes like Pharah, Widow, Hanzo, even Mei with 250 hp, and they dont feel like they're from the same game. Its almost like they gave genji tons of shit for no reason and forgot to give anyone else something useful

i can instakill pretty much any non-tanks as Roadhog but it's just not possible to hook-kill Ana and Mercy because most of my pellets will miss them on point blank range

i think hook-LMB-melee does around 180~ish damage to them because i can definitely kill any Tracer with hook-LMB alone

also anyone else noticed that the hook's pull misses a lot more? i always get 2-3 pulls in one match that end up with the enemy either going to my side or even behind me

You still use wrist flicks. Wrist for precision, arm for speed. Lower sense=more precision. You use your arm to make wide, sweeping motions to keep moving quickly.

It's the better way to aim, you'll quickly get used to it. If you use a chair with armrests, it's probably good idea to get rid of the arm rests, or at least for your mouse arm, you dont want your arm down.

Reminder that defense heroes will never be buffed. Defending is way less fun for most people, not being able to conquer as an attacker is frustrating. The game has to cater to attackers or people may start to lose interest. The devs think it's still fair because everybody play roughly 50/50 on both attack and defense.
