Only one attack can get the multiplier. Even if you stack bombs on the same spot, only one bomb will get the multiplier.
You can set off bombs by placing the SBB far enough away that it only hits the bombs. You can also throw a paintball or poke them and roll away (if you're fast enough or have Adept).

It does make the playerbase worse when a game about figuring things out and evolving fosters a community that depends on others despite the fact everything they need is right there.
