If you're struggling with deep ones, govt will be hard and will damage your monthly score on top of that. And you never need to assault the local governments - you can get the government research by hacking later.

Interestingly enough a lot of the bitching around the balance of the game is about pistols and that they are actually too good. They aren't something that are good enough that you don't have to buy rifles, but they are still good enough that a team with pistols, armor, and no other gear against a team with full rifles, armor, and gear have a lot better chance to win then they should have.

Turns out I had been lazy and was running the exe someone linked first from http://www.stare-hry.cz/hry/strategie/spellcross/
with the iso, which worked. While using the iso to make an install didn't. So try that.

Or there are patched exe files at http://www.patches-scrolls.com/spellcross.php you can try. One of them might just work for you.

I'm still disappointed by that game to this day. As a random shooter it's not half bad, but there was really no need for the XCOM label. Were there really even any upgrades in the game? I remember everything pretty much just being handed to you as you advanced through the plot. Even if you fucked up you ended up getting upgrades anyways.

Slowly getting through Apocalypse, I went from being stuck with stock vehicles for ages to suddenly being able to make all of the vehicles I want.

It went from being overwhelmed all the time in the city and having to pick my battles to being able to invade the alien dimension and wiping out whatever I want on a whim.

Feels like it should have been more spread out. Also personal shield generators take way to long to make.

Guess I just grind through all these missions now? I think I have most tech researched now, other than some captures and autopsy's, is there any point in getting them?

Yeah, I think if you destroy their hanger equivalents they stop sending out ufos. Pretty sure you can also launch ground combat missions on any of those structures.

I also already wiped every UFO from the map. I still haven't caught a Type 7 UFO yet though.

I think the full set of autopsy/capture research gives you toxin c. Given how powerful toxin b is, it's quite unnecessary. I'm not sure you actually have to do it to win.

Honestly I need to go back and really beat through the game before I can give a full answer. But first off it needs the same treatment x-com got when it comes to user interface and quality of life tweaks. Its been abit since I played the dos x-com, but it is so much easier to play, smoother, and easier for the user to control and manipulate. None of that is gameplay changes, but it makes a huge difference.

Obviously if the artstyle could be fixed that would be great, heh.

If you read some interviews, Apocalypse wan't supposed to have a full political system where factions had actual leader. You could monitor these leaders, negotiate alliances, make deats, etc. As x-com around this time is sponsored by the governmnet, but otherwise operates on its own terms, this would be pretty fun since you have lots of flexibility. Benefits, pros and cons for trading with and alliances with each faction.

Also some of the factions don't really matter. For example on group controls I think the food production, but even if they turn hostile to you or get taken over by the aliens, nothing really changes besides their units attacking you, which applies to other factions.

If for example Marsec goes hostile, you can't buy any of their stuff, including armor, guns, and ellerium. Pretty big deal.

Make the tanks useful. Apparently if you destroy the road tile they occupy, they just instantly are destroyed. More land vehicles would be cool.

A rebalancing of the ayys might be in order. Some are extremely difficult to deal with in Turn based (brain suckers, poppers) but are pretty easy to deal with realtime. On the other hand whatever the homing acid launcher is and the rocket launcher become extremely dangerous in realtime as its hard to stop them from firing.

Just kinda spit ballin', but that's some stuff I've noticed myself and seen other people observe. Honestly, Apocalypse might have the best air combat system of any x-com, so expanding that would be cool.

I'd remove the aliens entirely and instead make the factions more defined. Add a faction alternative to Marsec (maybe rebels who are trying to overthrow them on Mars). And an alternative to the taxi company. Factions could conquer territory and buildings. Add a sort of "final" base assault mission for each faction that if you won, you'd essentially break that faction and remove them from the game. But you'd have to fight your way through their territory and defenses to get to it.

There's a mod that lets Hunker Down extinguish fire on soldiers. Stop Drop and Roll or something like that. It's pretty handy. Don't use it much, but when you need it, you *really* need it. I used to use it a lot on Grenadiers thanks to Saturation Fire setting their cover on fire like a doucheballoon.

Personally, I find that Gunslingers are preferable for mission types that are timed, i.e. you only have a certain number of turns to complete the objective. Snipers can't be as mobile, and you need to keep moving when you're on the clock. For missions where you can take your time, such as Supply Raids and blacksite missions, Snipers can be damn good. Don't underestimate Gunslingers, though; with their later abilities, they can do a ton of burst damage to multiple targets or one big target.

Also, research done contributes to your end of month report score, and hence your income. They literally will start to pay for themselves, even disregarding the actual tech advances. For some reason, less then year in I can already hire Mercenary Commandos. Seems kinda broken considering how crazy good they are. Something like 140 hp, 40 armor all sides, and 60% piercing resistance. They can fly, their shotgun does 50 dmg per pellet, and they can stun with their punches.

Late game they 360 noscope everything, weaken a couple of pods with grenades and you can go to town murdering everything with serial.

Nope. Pod types are generated per mission. In fact LWAP is a direct update to the Muton Centurion mod, which was also slot-in.

The last part is the hard one, because the outsiders outnumber you, spawn all at once, have at least two bars of health and regenerate. Like, make sure everything else is dead, activate them, then LE BREAK LOS, and then run around trying to wear them down or something.

Mutons won't show up in early march larges. Those ships are a month ahead in research, so he's going to see at worst floaters, mints, and maybe lids. Considering they're going to be month 2 pods, they're still manageable with a team of squaddies. The biggest issue is the outsider pod by far. If you want to actually stand a chance at beating that pod, you need to spend as little utility as possible up until it's time to strike them.

At any rate, Outsiders are the real threat, make sure that A) You take out every other pod first so the Lids don't suddenly crash the party, and B) your squad hasn't taken any damage or wasted any grenades.

The evac was literally just offscreen to the side of that pic on the buildings roof. >>150773437 was also just offscreen at the base of said building. Also due to early game rng giving me nothing but scientists, I had mag but my squad was still at its base modded size turning that into a 9vs6 fight in the aliums favour with them boxing me in. And to think I considered upping pod size by 2 instead of just 1. 11vs6 would've made me cry.

As it was at the end of my turn 5 of them were dead and then the surviving naja onehit someone in full cover with the advent pod killing another guy. I only got through that through some extremely lucky desperation 30% shots actually landing.

Najas are literally the second coming of thin men.

Slightly better troopers that can move, shoot, and then overwatch. If the shot hits and panics someone they'll run AFTER the overwatch goes up by the way. I've had a pod of 4 of them and it was hell since I'm so early only my shinobi has got a perk to run overwatches so far and he didn't even have it then. I rerolled him immediately after that mission.
