They didn't fix them entirely. There's still LoS bugs in the 1.0 release. They did a good job with what they had to work with. But the main objective of LW was never to fix bugs. To act like it was that much better than vanilla is pretty funny when we got new bugs like AI ignoring collision in certain areas of the maps.

And as far as xcom 2 is concerned, firaxis keeps introducing new bugs with the DLC, so it's probably best to wait until they're done with that shit so you only have to do one sweep. Plus it works better with an overhaul mod anyway, since you will have the complete game assets to work with, instead of hacking together some shit that firaxis might end up making themselves anyway. Plus nobody seems to want to organize and get this shit done. Every mod that would be considered an overhaul is minor and done by one or two people.

We'll be waiting a long time for something like LW for xcom 2. Then again we waited a long time for something like it for EU, so whatever.

Funny enough I've never used a smoke in X2 in three campaigns, and now on my fourth with drones everywhere, I'm still not. I just never saw any practical use for them when most enemies have special abilities/tools that they'll happily use that aren't reliant on aim. That's a great question. One I'd love to have an answer to. I can do I/C no problem, it's actually even fun up until I start steamrolling at the end of the game. Then when I do I/L everything just turns to shit. Holy shit, so great. I've got a Jaeger that is honestly a monster, especially with the Kinetic Strike heavy weapon I've got from some other mod, giving the Jaeger a punch to go along with In The Zone and a pretty real gun alongside it. I also have a Goliath that is fucking indestructible (it tanked 4 Archons, a Sectopod, and an entire Advent pod of fire alone and was basically fine; this is on Commander with ABA Pods+, FYI). That Goliath is mid-ranked, too, not even a Colonel or anything.

Get LW Mecs as SPARKS.

I went from being on total defence carefully choosing my battle, to suddenly wiping out every UFO in the alien dimension. After that it was just grinding through the alien destruction missions.

The imbalance between the real time a turn based modes are odd. With Brain Suckers being OP as fuck in TB mode but weak as hell in RT and vica-versa with Entropy Missiles.

I didn't even touch psionics, even though you have access from the start. I guess they tried to tone down how OP it was from 1 and 2?

I wish there was a bit more to the whole city and organisations thing. Other than Transtellar getting pissed off from damage and me bribing them it seemed pointless.

Oh and it takes way to long to access the end game armour and it is the one and only type you research. Why on earth didn't anyone try and make a helmet that stops Brain Sucker attacks, or at least stops one or 2 attacks before they can take effect?

Toxiguns ignore shields, so if you use them you can kill the ayys and use theirs.

Yeah, craft progression in particular seems way too steep. You go from nothing almost straight to the Retaliator just because it's hard to build shit any faster. And once you've got Annihilators you just piss on everything.

You're running ABA with Evac All(two mods that conflict and cause those situations), or something else that conflicts with Evac All

Go to the Evac All missions ini in the config, and delete the file. Should be fixed. Going forwards, make sure the VIP gets extracted manually first in missions, since if they go last(and they might with Evac All), they count as dead thanks to a bug introduced in Shen's Last Gift.

AI went full retard.

That lid I MC'd shat acid everywhere (living way longer than it should have thanks to aid protocol) and it worked as a wall of pain for the ayyliems, wearing them down as they were approaching my position. The lids all ran off in random directions killing civilians instead of me, which was very nice of them. After they were done massacring the civs, they suicide rushed into my whirlwind ranger and SPARK.

Normally Advent would have naded my dudes on the roof to fuck but they went mental trying to kill the lid. Once the advent on the right were taken out it was ez pz.

Hacking an elite MEC helped distract them as well.

Turns out MC hack didn't end too badly at all.

So turns out that if an enemy is in cover during the initial concealment, you won't get the flanking crit bonus unless you actually happen to be flanking them. Despite the fact that they're considered out of cover and you're not getting an aim penalty.

Any commanders here that play legend ironman without cheats?

Just wondering if anyone else skips the first retaliation mission? Getting wounds is pretty much guaranteed on that mission and before AWC is built I have found skipping it beneficial.

Possibly the only thing you could do is send 4 rookies so each can score a kill then evac to gain an advantage on having 4 extra squaddies.

Anyone else come up with some early game strats for legend ironman? Would be awesome to hear from you.

Just went up against two sectoids and a trooper. Decided to flashbang them to buy myself a little time since I had already used my other actions.

So what you want are the particle systems(although in some rare cases you might have to change the color in the material itself, for reasons that are not completely clear to me)

Once you open them by double clicking, you'll open the Cascade Editor, which is what you use in the Unreal Engine to create FX, in most cases you'll get multiple columns that are each an effect, each column made of different "modules" that for the most part should be self explanatory. Also note that you can click on the little under the name of an effect to turn that effect off, this obviously makes it easier to see the effect you're working on.

When it comes to color, Initial Color is, well, the initial color, sometimes effects will just have this, if they have scale color/life or something of the sort like in this case, it means the color will change during the life of the effect, as in, it could start red and end as blue or whatever.

When you click on a module the window in the bottom left changes, in this case you can see a bunch of nonsense, but what matters are the X, Y and Z values, which are Red, Green and Blue respectively.

Scale color/life and stuff looks more complicated, if you open it it will have multiple points. In this case it has like 6, and every point will have an In value and then an Out value.

I think that usually the in value is time, and the out value is the color. In this case i think it's being used to cause a blinking effect on the beam, by making it change color several times really fast. I honestly can't even tell if it's changing the color.

If you walk into a clearly explained scenario and understand the risks, its not the DM being bad. Neither is X2 bad for encouraging a faster playstyle. X2 attempts to address the dominate strategy of X1 and shake up the formula with mixed results.

Well, first, I hit Ctrl+D to cheat and reveal the entire map, then I go straight for the treasure chests. Also, when equipping your vessel, there's a pulldown menu that lets you just list the infiltration items. Or you can just bring everything, and anything that doesn't qualify as an infiltration item will be returned to your base (just be sure you didn't bring too many infiltration items that you can't carry). The thief suit is useful for carrying more items when you finally unlock it.

The treasure chests are useful for getting gems, which are needed for some endgame armors (in .99 at least).

Oh yeah totally give it another shot. Really one of the best PvP shooters I've played with actual fresh mechanics and playstyle. Ubisoft is actually finally stepping up their game on the anti-cheat implementation and are still actively supporting the game, even if it is far from perfect. All the content has stayed free too (excluding cosmetics).

I don't disable them, i use the true concealment mod, the way that mod works is that the timer doesn't start ticking until you reveal yourself.

I think it's the perfect balance between removing them and keeping them, that way you get the chance to scout the map, and maybe even set an ambush or two, but once it starts, you still need to move fast.

Oh, and, uh, the annihilator armor no longer has a jetpack instead of a backpack. You may want to change that back one day down the road. I also increased projectile speeds on a bunch of weapons. That's about it for the modding changes though. I think you could always take a vanilla Piratez.rul from .99 if you want to make sure you get the true vanilla experience.

Sorry to the anon who just completed the .98 campaign but I love .99. Just got the XG rifles and my god are they bad ass. You can snap shot like 4 times per turn and it's incredibly accurate.

Oh no worries, I'm playing .99 right now and have been enjoying the completely re-vamped
early game. Not that it was bad, but they added an entire section that progression wise happens before the start of .98, so its very interesting and fresh.

I also really focused hard on early captives and research this time and am really impressed with the results. I can't make alot of stuff, but I already can contact the Eurosyndicate for those delicious laser rifles, Wang for his big rocket launchers, someone else for the Big Ben SMG (40 piercing dmg early is really good), have access to the fireball launcher (best incendiary weapon imo), and can hire Mercenary commandos who are blatanlty OP this early when nothing can hurt them.

Once I get enough cash, I'm pretty confident I can already compete with the top tier of any faction (even potentially mercenaries) excluding the star gods of course due to my lack of psi tech. Not even quite out of the first year yet. Its amazing the difference my experience from the first campaign has made on this one.

Yeah you can get "screwed" in a very short term, but it never permanently stunts the rest of your campaign.

Honestly though, I'm only playing on regular, so I do wonder if I could use a difficulty increase, even if I'm playing on ironman. I'm not exactly certain how I could lose this campaign, as I know how to pace myself on what tactical missions to take and how to generate consistent positive scores every month. Even writing this is convincing my I need to turn it up a notch. I'll have to think it over. Haven't you been playing it on the 3rd difficulty?

I wish I had set up the soldier diary mod to work with this game, because she has spent a fair amount of time in the medbay. A few close calls, worst was on a academy base attack where she was left with like 15hp and unconscious, had to carry her back along with a provost and gtfo of there.

i know this level was supposed to be very difficult to punish me for not stopping the dark event, but the map it gave me, despite the LW amount of ayys showing up, i had a MASSIVE terrain advantage.
i just set up everyone and gunned down waves of ayys that ran into the corral. no one died, but i had to leave a rookie behind.

I wouldn't focus overmuch on capturing in early game. You're going to have a tough time of it no matter what. Early game is all about melee because early guns are inaccurate and shitty as hell. I think the cutlass works out to be about the best all around melee weapon given your starting soldiers' shit skills, plus they fit in your belt, pick up a few of those.

The hammer is nice because it can snap shot in any direction and knock through walls.

The Skorpion SMG sets things on fire. Useful for night missions. The Tommy gun, UAC carbine, and assault laser (if you're lucky enough to get one) are probably the best early game guns.

The assault cannon can come in handy since it has an arc and can go over obstructions that way. My friend said he had luck with bows for that very reason, but I didn't play that way so I can't speak to it.

There's so much stupid bullshit dependencies in this tech tree that you will be kicking yourself when you find out Dynamite is required for Hellerium Muntions or Mutant Porn is required for Diplomacy. This is why I built a storage base. If you can avoid throwing things out, the less you will be kicking yourself later. Of course there are caveats, but my latest rage is about jewelry. I had been selling it, and it turns out it's used in the Seductress outfit (some of the best stun in the game) and god knows what else.

I play with additional mission types. It was a haven defense mission.

I couldn't deal with the reinforcements that were coming and ADVENT overwhelmed me. The haven missions give you 4 extra rookies to work with, but it wasn't enough. In the end, only 2 of the rookies survived, my 4 corporals and 2 of the rookies were killed. Luckily I was able to pull out with the alien hunter weapons in tow.

#1 thing is to read read read. If you haven't already, read everything currently in your bootypaedia. If you press "U" on most screens that opens it up, even in your inventory screen (when figuring out which weapons will work best with different gals).

Save capturing people for when you have high melee skills and or guaranteed back up who can kill whatever you fail to stun.

With .99, the game literally gives you a mission for capturing people (Temple of Sirius raid). Take advantage of this to train melee skill and get easy captures. The captures may not seem to yield much, but they actually will unlock Market contacts which will let you buy some sweet guns and other equipment, and also they increase your score. Slowly work your way up to 15 brainers asap, just keep close tabs on your maintenance and funding with considerations for standard loot and good manufacturing so that you don't hit the red.

As the other peson noted, chainsaws are amazing. Guaranteed kills early, and you can use them to cut through wooden obstacles, making navigating maps like Ratmen villages much easier, since you can just cut through the maze.

Bows with incendiary arrows are surprisingly strong, and great for training reactions. (They fire with an arc, so you can hit stuff without being in LOS, even on small maps) Take a few on Mega Scorpion hunts, and you can train reactions and throwing really quick (Bows only have snapshot, so they have 100% reaction fire accuracy with skilled gals).

I've been trying out the 'Rapid Reinforcements' mod as well and reccomend that if you want some extra challenge.

You can set it so there's an extra turn delay between the flare and the drop - but they get one action immediately after dropping and scampering. No more completely risk-free overwatch huddles around the reinforcement flares now - it feels a lot more fair. Kind of brutal with ABA + ABP though.

Thanks for all the advice anon, and for the most part ive been pretty good about not giving gals with low shooting any guns and only giving the rope/stun rods to 90+melee gals, been getting brainers each time i have enough to get one and still have like 150k, the temple of sirius raid is actually the mission i stopped on last night because i thought that one of the altar boys didnt have a weapon and ended a turn next to him, he ripped and tore my second best gal up and as a result i set the church on fire so they all will burn together im having a ton of fun with this so far and bootypedia has helped a ton

Maybe it's just me, but I found the berserker to be the easiest.
If you can spot it with a concealed unit and you have enough time, you can just overwatch trap it, then freeze it and unload on it.
First encounter with viper king can't be cheesed with overwatch since you have to activate it on your turn.
Archon king is fucking bullshit though, especially pre-plasma.

Really though, I don't even know what attacks she has. I'm one of the recent returnees so I only fought her in one campaign, but it all ended quickly in both encounters with overwatch-freeze-free axe-fire EVERYTHING.
Snek was probably harder for me since I didn't know what to expect so it freezed half the squad.
It is admittedly the easiest in subsequent encounters since you can freeze it for three actions.

The only cap on aim is no 0% shots. There are no hidden modifiers for crit. Without opportunist, overwatch shots can't crit. Flashbangs cancel overwatch, but don't stop going into overwatch the next action. Just aim and mobility penalties. Dashing is supposed to make overwatch harder to hit, but I believe its broken in vanilla at least.

You didn't take Medical Protocol, so I'd skip Revive Protocol as well. Threat Assessment is probably best, but I personally like Airdrop as an idea, so I'd give that a shot. If you find that you need the area control more, Threat Assessment is the pick.

I'd probably take Fan Fire, I personally like it (Bluescreens make it super bullshit btw) and it plays nicely with Aggression (each shot from Fan Fire has its own attack roll, meaning each has a unique chance to crit, and three pistol crits with Bluescreens can insta-gib serious robotic enemies).

Grazing Fire and Center Mass are good together since I believe they stack together, but they're not sexy or interesting, and Grazing Fire feels just worse than Fan Fire.

Ever Vigilant is the "I don't like pistols and Grazing Fire is boring" choice. It's fine, it's a workhorse, I'd take it if you lack a good OW soldier.

I'd take Fan Fire myself. I have a Ranger with Fan Fire who's damn good.

You need to be able to fight scouts, fighters, raiders and destroyers, destroyers and raiders only after laser cannons and some foundry projects.

The others you can safely ignore until late game, though don't be surprised to see a battleship come in to shoot down your main base satellite. if you don't have a spare ready to launch immediately your base is getting attacked.

Yeah that is a major perk but if I recall right in EU/EW they also disabled special abilities. It may have just been there were a lot less special abilities to be used. Also not all abilities are removed - Snakes can still tongue grab and poison spit. In fact their FB'd aim penalty almost guarantees they will use only their special abilities.

The other thing is that the disorient effect (-20 aim) is applied equally between the Flashbang OR mindspin disorienting someone. So mindspin disorient also hits softer than in Xcom1. Since I did my clean campaign I didn't mind cheating and having something that buffs up flashbang and psionic disorient both to -50 aim.

Honestly come to think of it that's the thing - flashbang really is just the anti psionic grenade now:

-It doesn't disable Shieldbearers from activating shieldmode.
-Doesn't disable snek spit or snek grab (makes grab less likely to work though)
-I don't know if it disables muton grenade, nor if it disables their stabby
-It DOES disable Codex psionic abilities or teleportation
-It DOES disable all psionics of a sectoid
-It DOES disable all psionics of the Gatekeeper.
-it DOES disable stunlancer, that or it just makes them unable to move up to hit you.
-It does not disable the aim bonus ability of the Advent officer.
-I am not sure if it does the archon's blazing pylons.


There's no account of how much a smoke grenade provides defense, just that "The effect of the defensive boost is akin to moving from open ground to low cover."

The trees are not quite as temperamental as cars in Firaxicom, but they do go up in a group when you hit them the wrong way. I'm loving it.

I can't get good at XCOM2. It feels like I lose someone every mission now. I don't even feel like I'm very far into the game, mechs and muttons have just started showing up as of the last three missions. I've just kinda been researching shit willy-nilly and not really sure what I should be focusing on. Everyone is still using default equipment actually.

Be prepared for a game which is slower than molasses. I'm talking potentially over 5 minutes per turn even if you execute everything as soon as possible with no delays. Even longer if you need to stop, and think about what you're going to do.

I'm not saying it's bad. It's just painfully, horribly slow.

Don't know what you're talking about Anon. I had all the speed modifiers I could find maxed. Every action in the game just took for-fucking-ever to execute. Having to move each individual trooper, and going through their slow-as-shit walk. Taking 20s to line their shot up, shoot, and then finally allow me to select the next guy.

This isn't even going into trying to prime grenades, and then throw them, or anything more complicated which takes having to dig through menus. The game is just fucking slow. Too slow to be playable for me.

I know this is a long shot, but did you have your clock speed maxed?

I personally think the movement speed is too slow even on maxed everything, but I have a need for speed and think soldiers should disappear and reappear at their destination (unless they see an ayy) since I'm running a 3+Ghz chip and this shit should be optimized. Even with my impatience I can still play things like X-Piratez and enjoy it way more than XCOM 2. I'd say OpenXCom is way faster than the fucking Firaxis games, that's for sure.

Opposite for me - XCOM/XCOM 2 are significantly faster on actions being taken. Not even talking squad size like the other guy was mentioning. I don't mind giving orders to each dude, I just hate it taking so long to execute each action that it feels like time has slowed to a crawl.

Moving each trooper yeah, but the walk can be sped up and you can cancel the majority of the animation for longer movements if you know what your doing.

You set that timer for zero and chuck that thing.

The battles can play really fast if you actually know what you are doing and if you want to. Your just using a system your not used to so it feels very slow and clunky.

Base management is the actual slow stuff, though once you get used to vanilla, its still a breeze.

You can actually kind of do this. Move your view so you can't see anything but where you are moving, and often it cancels most to all of the walk animation.

XCOMEU/EW or XCOM2 as an OXC mod?
None yet, unfortunetly.

Keep in mind that a single xcom soldier appearance requires 8 facings of:
left arm, right arm, and groin+legs, each with 8 frames of animation (walking cycle)
8 torso facings + 8 "alt" torso facings (male/female, or in the case of flying power armor, grounded/flight)
8 'kneeling legs' facings
3 death frames (the item corpse is the fourth)
possibly other frames.

that's just one soldier
then you do the same for personal armor, power armor, and flying armor. then, some aliens have different animation frames and animation rules...
all while doing this in a fixed and limited palette selection which if you fuck up, will garble the appearance in-game.
