Also Squigly's cool. Carol's hard af to play, at least for me, otherwise I'd give her another 5th shot. If Robo could play slightly better in disadvantage state, or had better assists or DHCs, she'd be played more but other characters just do some jobs of hers better without all the hassle.

Sprites like Painwheel's and Sekhmet are part of why I prefer Skullgirls' aesthetic over something like Arcana Heart or Vanguard Princess. Skullgirls just knows when to go full not-cute, in a "not even sorta trying to be cute" kinda way. It's closer to the Darkstalkers approach, which fits characters like Painwheel really well.

Painwheel is supposed to look more of a human than something else. The tattered garments that she's wearing barely even qualifies as "clothing".
In the case of Sekhmet, he's not a human, so as a creature, almost anything goes.

Just my opinion, so I really won't argue as to if her character design is good or not. I just personally don't like it as much as I wish I could have.

Also, I don't mind almost any of the character designs in Vampire Savior, as the humanoid characters aren't altered to the point where it could be distinguished as something else. And I haven't played Arcana Heart or Vanguard Princess before, so I can't comment on those.

I think Painwheel is very noticeably human. Moreso than other classic freak characters like Blanka/Voldo/Necro/etc.
She has a very normal body shape compared to the other Skullgirls characters, and mask/blades look noticeably augmented.
She doesn't look like a born freak. She even keeps her natural skin and hair color.

Physically, she honestly looks more human than Peacock does. Some people don't even know Peacock is human until they learn her backstory.
They just think she jumped out of the TV or something.

VSav-wise, I think of Painwheel as like a tiny Victor that kinda contorts like Zabel. Her body doesn't morph nearly as much as those two, but the goals in the animations are similar. Brutal, flashy, and sometimes unsettling, but not cute. Very appropriate for a rage-filled character wielding an unconventional weapon.

That's actually a decent comparison, albeit some of the cast can be described similarly (based off of their initial appearance, due to the theme of the game). If her mask was similar to that of Ileum's though, for example, it'd be easier to assume that she was/is a human from an initial glance. I honestly don't know how to describe Painwheel's one as, and in Ileum's case, I know what it is, so at least that can be associated with a human-like aspect, if you ignore the rest of her body, of course.

and then register for both games at CEOtaku this Fall.

That KI is the future of the FGC?

KI's numbers at EVO this year were actually pretty disappointing. I was surprised.

I honestly think SG would have fared better. It has an international scene, is on more accessible platforms
for the broader FGC, and probably would have gotten signups from of some of the Marvel crowd.

Too bad the EVO dream is over for anything that isn't from a major publisher though.
With Microsoft likely able to keep KI in the ring, and Smash safely secured,
new games like KOF14 will basically be competing for Marvel's spot next year.

And all it'll take is Riot to finally announce Rising Thunder's successor this year
to guarantee all of those games get booted to side-tourney status.

I think if by that time the Mobile version is well received (not PokeGo success, but still reviewed as legit fun game), and next year's CB can have the biggest SG turnout ever, then game should still be doing all right in 2018.

LZ's audience will be bigger from both SG and Indiv. SGM will keep appetites wet for new content, and SG would prolly be one of the oldest games still gaining new blood at major events, which looks good from a community pov.

Them's Fightin' Herds should also be out by then, which help strengthen the quirky 2D side of fighting games, so we might see more new FGC growth from people not as into SF/MK, and maybe help longtime "closet" SG fans feel less shy about coming out to play.

that's all optimistic, but I think it's possible. And if Indiv looks as stunning as we imagine, 2018 could be LZ's best year ever I hope.

So far, the mobile game looks kinda neat, but it also looks like it's drain the fuck out of the battery like PokeGo. The mobile game doesn't seem like a replacement for SG2, but more as a "We know you guys wanted skullgirls 2, but we're making a different game, here's a little something to keep you busy." kinda game. It seems that it's gonna alot of unlockables and such to extend playtime.

Man, those guys have had almost WORSE luck than lab zero, and things look pretty glum for it, i'm not sure things are going to turn out ok for it, but here's hoping it will.

Honestly, as great as Indiv looks, it's going to get buys by only two ways: by mouth, or by ads, and Lab Zero is good at only one of those things, though they DID get alot of people's attention by sending beta copies to let's players which was a pretty smart move. Who knows? Maybe it will get very popular or even be the next big let's play game, whether or not that's a good thing is up to speculation.

Agreed about advertising for Indiv. Hopefully the new gameplay footage will help sell itself though.
Clips from anime opening might actually turn some heads closer to release. Even Japan doesn't do those as much anymore, so it'll be kind of a novelty.
We'll have to see, but hoping for the best.

TFH looks like it's been on a good run. They haven't had many problems that I know of since the IGG got funded.
It looks better and better with each update and it's really showing off the power of the Z-Engine.
Only thing that'll hold it back will be small roster size at release, and PC-only launch with delayed console release,
but that's just stuff gamers will have to get over if they want more variety in their FGs from smaller more involved devs.
Even KI struggled with probably quadruple the budget SGs had, so indie FGs are gonna need time to grow.

SG and Indivisible may have two different types of audiences though, as SG is closer to a Marvel-type fighting game and Indivisible does not share that same characteristic. As for how the exposure will affect SG in the future, I'm not honestly sure. Indivisible does not look like a game that has mechanics that will take a while to learn, so it may have an appeal to those that do not want to become a "trainingboar" to play well.

Either way, I hope both do well in the future.

SG and Indiv will attract different peoples for sure, but the audiences don't have to be in a vacuum.
Like how Nintendo can have their Metroids on one side and their Kirbys on the other, but their fans
still find some common ground.with crossover discussion, fanart, cosplay, etc.

Best case, I think it'll just grow LabZero's collective audience and word-of-mouth.
So if CB or AX or whatever became like yearly LabZero-Central with tons of cool stuff, fans from both groups
could show up just to hang out and talk/play games and cosplay. And when you got a big crowd like that,
it can attract more people in from the outside who might wanna know what's going on.

In a lot of ways LabZero is still recovering from the initial challenges with Autumn and Skullgirls,
so I think that kinda good energy will keep em going as they move on to SG2 or whatever they work on next.

It doesn't give char specific combos tho. Like others said, mainly do your biggest damage as early as possible.

Most of the 40+ hit combos you see don't even do much damage, and Full Undizzy combos tend to not be very optimal unless you'e playing Solo or hitting a character under half life.

Yeah, i got that part. It's the rest I need a bit of guidance for. I know combos deal damage, build undizzy, and both players gain meter. Non-throw resets reset scaling/IPS and give you two chains before undizzy builds again. And I believe meter gained(¿or given? not sure) scales too.

From my understanding, unless you know it will kill, full combos aren't as practical as successful resets unless you bait burst at the end. But knowing all that I'm wondering how to juggle undizzy (and IPS I guess) especially after the first 13 hits to get better damage, or to build more meter. Comparing this to what I'm saying, a jump in>max damage ground string might do less damage than getting as many heavy attacks in as possible in the first 13 moves but if you do an instant overhead reset at the end of each, the first one will (usually) result in less undizzy to give you even more possible damage when you eventually reset to lead into a full combo. I'm trying to figure out how to apply that sort of thing because my punish game feels really straightforward and doesn't take any of this into account right now and I can only think to test different strings and combos and compare damage/undizzy/meter. I only wanted a better understanding so that in an actual match, I could adapt my punishes on the fly to best fit whatever situation I'm in.

I hope all of this makes sense.

Well obviously even if you don't start with the most optimal combo, if you can pull of a reset somewhere in the middle, it'll still work in your favor. However, if you can maximize those first 13 hits AND go into a tricky reset, you might as well go for it since it'll provide the most damage vs opponent's meter gained going into your second combo.

It's apparently more common in Japan, but there are actually some good players that don't even bother much with resets, and instead opt to end combos early into hard knockdown or a push into the corner.
It's not as disorienting for the opponent, but it can work out similarly since you can still position them in an unfavorable position and apply wakeup pressure, bait, or mixup.

This is kinda general stuff, but what characters were you trying to explore? You might want to just start looking at some more high-level match videos for them.

I think it depends on what archetype you're used to.

If you're familiar with characters like Ryu, you'll probably settle into Fukua pretty well.
If you've played any heavy hitting characters, Bella and Band should feel pretty fun.
If you're coming from something else like Smash, it really doesn't matter. You'll have a lot of adjusting to do either way.

In general, just pick the character that interests you most. Tournament results show that anyone who puts in the time can do great with their character(s).

Every time he tried to post dedgame memes there were either people finding matches or a tournament going on.

I enjoy KOF, so I'm actually glad people still play it, but KOFXIII on Steam usually only gets half the regular online players SG does.
I've barely even seen streams of the KOF14 demo outside of sidestreams for major tournaments. Juicebox is doing so much legwork for that scene right now.
SNK better be looking at a longterm plan with that game, and their company, or they're just gonna tumble all over again.

Might be hard then since some people remap the up button to something else so they can just dial in most circle motions, but I can't think of a convenient setup for the directional keys. This game is rather lenient with inputs though so you'd either have to get used to it or try to use a different setup. The only other solution I can think of is to map them to the num pad, and set the up button to 0, though I don't know if that will work or not either.

Good fighting games have to be made with a long lifecycle in mind, so it's not too crazy to see one supported so long.

Just imagine if Nintendo had done annual expansion patches for Melee, and ported it to new systems over the years.
Nobody would have probably asked for "Brawl" or "Sm4sh" by now.

Makes me wonder how LZ might package a SG2 to make it not just feel like an expansion pack tho.
The Mobile version looks kinda neat with its Story focus, so maybe something like that would make SG2 feel different from SG1.

Really wonder how SFV is going to remain in their "beta release" before they actually release the full game, and if people will even continue to support it. I hope SG doesn't turn out the same way.

I would imagine more story/plot to add, a few characters, and not much more. They would probably base the non-DLC characters' release on who's relevant in the plot, while the DLC ones, if any, could be voted for or something else. That's how most of the fighting games' sequels that I've played turned out (apart from the player-base being directly linked to the decision of new DLC characters being released).

Yeah, I think it's mainly logistical reasons that they want to move from SG1 to SG2, even if "SG2" could theoretically be done through patches to SG1.

Working on a "SG2" would probably allow them to:
- Draft a new working contract with Autumn with a new budget, timeline, and maybe better pay split from sales.
-Kill any residual ties with groups credited on SG1 that don't work on the game anymore, like Reverge or ex-contractors that might even still get a cut from sales.
-Completely drop support for older platforms that would be holding them back (ex: PS3/360/Vita)
-Rebuild the game in the updated Z-Engine, including rebuilt UI not made in Otter
-Integrate other tools into their pipeline that would help development, but would have required them to rebuild the game anyway.
-Make gameplay changes that were considered too drastic for SG1, like Mike's Beta SuperJump

And all that without even the consideration of new characters or assets.
So yeah, sometimes it helps when a team can put a cap on an old project and move on to a new one.

Uh, hmm, there might actually not be one. It was a very quick thing he tried for only like a week or two in the Beta.
If you find any footage please link it. I think he was trying it around the time they were working on Eliza maybe.

It basically made the super jumps really high, like they are in the Marvel games.
I think you could jump to the point where you couldn't see the opponent anymore, but I can't remember.

It also affected jump heights during air combos though, so people were thrown off with how much it of a change it made to their air strings.
That's ultimately why he left it out, but supposedly he would really like to bring it back in a sequel.

Yeah it's pretty cool, but it was definitely a big change.
Like you can see they were dropping their usual air combos cuz everything was so different.

You might have needed to input more moves for restand combos and stuff, and some characters might have been able to capitalize on it more than others.
It would have definitely needed some rebalancing on the cast.
But hey, SG2 would be a good time to bring it back!.

So chars on teams would need to aim for Counterhit or Heavy Starters to get the combo length and damage you currently get for BnBs right now.

Since the characters have such strong resets, I don't think tweaking Undizzy like that would change much for high level play, but it would make low & intermediate play a little less punishing.
Would also give Solos a slight strategic buff since they could go for longer strings.

Just my thoughts anyway. Would love to hear Mike's of course.

but tbf that's how some people felt about SG designs too.
I remember a lot of people initially thought Beowulf was kinda plain when the voting started, and there was more hype for Isaac/Stanley/Panzerfaust
but then the big Wulf-Star movement kicked in later and ultimately worked more in Beo's favor in Round 2
Umbrella's personality also got more developed from the voting. She was more generic brat before she adopted the salty vibe, which seemed to make some people like her more afterwards.

anyway, point is some characters just need time to grow into their role, especially for an RPG like this where we don't know their full part in the story yet.

Yeah I'd say so. The ballroom stage has her looking pretty mopey.
They might have had her do something totally different before,
like just being plainly hyperactive with Para and Adam trying to calm her down or something.

Umbrella really doesn't do much in Story Mode except whine to Parasoul and ditch Adam.
and there isn't much to gather from the boob poke by itself other than that she's mad.
A lot of the other things we interpreted about her, like deliberately picking on Adam,
having fits of bitterness/depression, and being a general pain in the butt on any given day,
was all made up during the Character Vote.

I think they saw how that testy attitude fit her really well, and just ran with it.
And then you even had the whole Morton Salt thing which made it really perfect.

A lot of common crits come from people that played the flawed Vanilla version and then bailed on it, so the game's been living that down. for years

Aside from that, a lot of the hate is mostly just the result of a conservative FGC, compounded with the popular perceptions of "Waifu Games,"
and a gaming audience still unaccustomed to traditional fighters, especially Marvel-style ones.

FGC rats on it cuz they want more buff karate men and grungy art.
Hardcore/Popular Gamers think it's porn and just avoid it
Casuals think it's too hard cuz it's not Smash
and then a lot of People on the outside just regurgitate what the other three are saying, depending on what circles they frequent.

So SG kinda had to pave its own audience. It had to attract people that were drawn to its artstyle, were willing to try a tough genre, and weren't concerned much about how other gamers felt.
You can tell how over the years, as more people have enjoyed it, slowly others among the aforementioned groups have tried it and formed their own opinions on it.
It's part of the reason the scene for it is still experiencing some growth despite the game's age. The audience it helped build is now a bit meatier, more vocal, and more supportive.

Those are both valid points I didn't consider. I'm going to assume that's why Abel turned out the way he did in SFIV. Though as for the second point, there is DoA for reference, and some of the more recent fighting games have even more obvious "pandering". Even KoF's release in China had to censor some of the female casts' outfits.

And Skullgirls at launch was actually kinda shaky. It was console-only, there were more legit bugs, mixed reviews,
and the overall market for digital games was a little weaker. Indivisible won't really have those problems.
It just needs to be a good game. Plenty of eyes will be on it by the end of 2017, so LabZero's just gotta deliver.

Yeah, less damage on a lot of moves, particularly shadows, cHP and command grabs as well as increased scaling from shadows and max scaling from BFF. Other nerfs include less blockstun on jHK>jHP so it doesn't keep you in blockstun long enough for another jHK and mShadow has less hitstun which alters some resets.

But at least held shadows opens new conversions, resets, and ways of opening up the opponent. Still, like >>150816862 said she's less the newbies, "pick up and go" character.

Shadow damage is actually terrible and not good to use in combos but it's good for mix up and cool extensions / set ups.
Hitting with any Clone now scales followup damage by 50% which kills all the shadow routes people were using.

I'm still working on my Robo damage to see how much she can squeeze out.

it's hard to dodge the initial hit, but neither that nor the foot shuffle really do that much damage compared to the fire pillars.
If you have Razmi on your team, and you know how the meter and aiming works, it shouldn't be much of a problem to win.
