Solos have the most explosive comeback potential in the game, so if you pick your moments right and know your mixups, you can be very lethal. I've experienced this more from the receiving end!

I've seen good Solo Beo, Solo Bella, Solo Soul, and even a good JP Solo Band. Solo Double and Fortune gotta be pretty scary too. I think I also heard Sonicfox won a tourney with Solo Fukua.

KoF13 is good but the online is rough and it's a lot tougher on controls.

It's also not the game I would pick as my counter example if I was going
to complain about games with "long" combos or a small community.

I definitely think it deserved more highlights than Injustice or UMvC3 did
at EVO though. KoF13 sets were always fantastic to watch, just like high level Skullgirls.

Robo was already the most cancerous as fuck character, all she does is run away and spam full screen beams, and now they made her a hundred times better?

I especially laugh when they "nerf damage" to make up for it. Whenever, its so obvious players will just find new ways to do the same damage.

I think the idea was to make at least a tad more viable as a Solo. Her damage nerf is pretty significant now, and her typical openers bring it down to probably lowest in the game.
Multi-hit Armor moves now chew through the beams too, so her best matchups have changed a bit.

Use Stancels and her Instant Overhead. Solo Squigly is a challenge definitely, but that's kinda true for most Solos. You have to know her almost like the back of her hand. Look at the type of comebacks Fuzzy and 159man did with Squigly on Duo after losing their Assist to Doublesnap at the start of the match. She definitely has tools to do work.

And she's got pretty good footsie range, especially compared to Painwheel, Beo, and Robo, who usually have to take some risk barging in with high low pressure. She's also the only character that can pull off a fullscreen command grab punish.

Valentine with a solid reversal would cover just about everything except damage. She already has great mobility options, Counters, command grabs, even a revive super. She'd probably start being favored over Fortune, since she'd apply most of Fortune's options without worrying about Head vulnerability, and having more uses for Meter.

Squigly's tricky because her dash is good and her air normals are pretty strong, so with more movement plus her Stancels and Divekick, her mixups would be pretty crazy. She also has some pretty easy confirms, especially using Spear, that would make her look really good. I do think there could be some buffs to her overall Dmg and situational DP though.

I think for both of those characters, part of the philosophy is Setup. Val trades some defensive options for the ability to utilize tools like vials to totally shut down her opponent, while Squigly uses things like Sing to capitalize on situations no other character can. This is part of the reason they're still strong on teams, since they're able to execute their gameplans faster and safer, but once they do, they're really effective.

Val has the best mobility in the game, by far. She also boasts an extremely fast projectile to play keepaway, vial shenanigans, and is really good at capitalizing off of most assists.
Her one and only weakness is not having a DP. It's a big weakness to offset big strengths, take that away and she'd be pretty crazy.

Filia is a shoto parody, her excellent DP is one of her main strengths. Her biggest weakness is no real range (Ringlet Spike sucks).

Eliza boasts big normals and Sekhmet things. Her DP is strike invulnerable only, she can be grabbed out of it. Her main weaknesses are her huge hurtbox, heavy reliance on meter, and she has a hard time dealing with grabs.

Bella's a fairly well-rounded jack-of-all-trades character, though the one thing she doesn't have is range (though unlike Filia she can counter zoning more easily with Deflector). Also, her DP is not the best reversal due to its awkward hitbox.

But outside of certain echo chamber websites, it's really not hated. Reviews have been solid since the Vanilla patches years ago fixed all of the truly janky stuff, and the characters are surprisingly well recognized now considering how few years the game's been released.

It's also acquiring perhaps the widest international appeal of any Western fighting game (starring original characters). Not even MK ever had an official JP Arcade Release and JP Dub.

It's mostly a lot of small changes and bugfixes. You'll only feel big differences if you play Robo or Fukua, and there are teeny but significant changes for Filia and Val so far.

Band vs. Robo is a different feeling matchup as well, and they're trying to feel out if its swinging too much in Band's favor or not.

Remember, it's not really a patch yet, just the Beta. So none of the changes are final yet.
