DarkBASIC is too much work for novice devs and too limiting for experienced coders. If you're in that sweet spot, it might be worth checking out, but you should know that the program was last updated in the Bush administration.

There's a few engines out there made specifically for certain genres and small teams. Ren'Py for VNs, RPG Maker for JRPGs, GZDoom for FPSes. Outside of those, you're stuck with the big 3 general purpose engines, Game Maker, Unreal and Unity, all of which are free and incredibly well documented. And yes <3

Added the functionality for the wizard's eye spell, though I don't have the actual spell in yet (I need the concept of "party status effects" first).

The spell makes dots on the minimap appear. Friendlies are green, enemies are red, pickups are blue, and chests are brown. Not sure if I'll leave chests in or not. Maybe they'll only be visible at Master level casting (and pickups might be only be at Expert level).

I've been struggling a lot with my anxiety and depression lately, and this has impacted my ability to work on Battle of the Heart. I'm sorry for that, truly. Instead I've switched to focusing a lot of my time to One Last Cup and making sure that we can get that in front of as many eyes as possible. To that end we had a fantastic PAX East showing of the demo of it, and Alex is now back and getting the public release of the demo ready.

New programming idea (not necessarily a game): build a web bot that simulates one of these people down to generating interesting hair colors, mental diseases and periodic histrionic meltdowns. It would be fun.

You've been able to rebind pretty much everything since forever,

I think there's even some way you can do it without having to go to the preferences menu at all, like you could just hold down Alt and right click or some shit and set a new keybinding for whatever you clicked on.

I got used to the default keys pretty quickly, so I never bothered, I'm pretty sure rebinding was one of the first things in Noob2Pro though.

Of course they do, don't be silly. Imagine a chess game, you make a grid of sprites, the king's square ends up having coordinates like 0.500, 0.000. Then when you place the king you need to center it on the square based on the size of the piece, which could be at position 0.512593, 0.15920... It just makes no sense and is impossible to calculate out by hand. But with other 2d engines it's as simple as thinking each square is 32 pixels, E1 is then at 32*5, 0. The king's sprite is 20 pixels so you have a margin of 12 pixels, 6 on each side. That puts the king on 32*5 + 6, 6. I end up making a grid of stuff for nearly every 2d game I make.

Teaching myself how to program, take three.
This time got somewhat far without feeling burned out, reached the part in stroustrups book where he starts using fltk to explain inheritance,callbacks and general oop design.
Took me a week and a half to get here and redo all the exercises in each chapter, probably due to the fact that I got to this point twice before, after which I just said "Fuck this" due to feeling severely burned out cuz of irl obligations and dedicating all my free time to learning c++. Taking it easy with just 2-3 hours a day dedicated to learning from the book/solving the exercises seems better, It doesn't affect badly on my willpower to study and I seem to be more productive during those few hours.
Imma complete this book this time.

Weird howling is heard over the hills, first the crew figure its just the normal howling of sand dunes, but the sound is way too regular. After the crew has searched for the source for awhile, they find a one meter diameter horizontal hole in a sand covered cliff. The sound does indeed come from the hole, but during the quiet periods, its in fact not blowing out of it, but rather its sucking air in.

The hole opens to a thin tunnel leading straight downwards, if a party member is selected to be hauled down using ropes he finds himself in a large cavern some 30m down. If he lights a torch he finds himself standing among a mass off otherwordly animals sleeping, their breathing being the source of the wind. Then either A: The animals wake up and fuck him up, maybe he screams that he found a mass of something alive before he is cut of. Or he his horribly mentally scarred from the experience but survives.

so for something like "wind" you would have to incorporate wind into the main mechanic of your game

Optimized my function that creates the minimum amount of rectangles in an image from top to bottom for cheaper pixel perfect collision.

You can click on beds to make them. Absolutely no difference, no buffs for comfort or sanity or anything. Maybe rearrange stuff on the shelves, make it so that over time they are more and more randomly placed, as if the soldiers were actually picking things up and putting them back in slightly different places. Player can keep their bunker "tidy" by clicking on stuff to make it neat and ordered again, but only for cosmetic effect

At the moment it's absolute worst case scenario, just a massive mesh duplicate of the terrain that I made to see if the thing was even viable.
That means no LoD on the mesh, no fading out to a simpler material at distance etc, but it still isn't as horrifying as the 'real' grass set ups I tried.

I get like
>110fps without it
>100fps with the mesh visible with a basic material
>90fps with the grass material
>75fps with masked dynamic shadows enabled (which aren't really needed, but are nice)

I know I can make it run much better, hopefully well enough to include it without needing a 'Grass' graphics tickbox.

At the moment there isn't actually anything TO instance, it's just one massive 60,000 triangle duplicate of the underlying terrain, which is obviously terrible.
I'll probably switch to hand placing patches of grass. It'll be much more manageable and I can also control when they cast shadows, switch to the fancy material etc.
