Everything's real jerky and I can't figure out why.

I couldn't figure out how to get my character to turn and move relative to the camera's position on my own. So I just took Unity's shitty stock controller and tweaked it. I think the problem's gotta be with how my animator is setup.

Oh well, might as well do what >>149878960

Also are you using root motion for normal walking? I've personally never been a fan of doing that.

>That doesn't explain shit. How much funding do you think you need? I hope you aren't trying to make a triple-A game with no professional dev history and no personal investment, because the world doesn't work that way.
I think I'll need 80k for me, two guys, office space and other costs for a year. I'm not trying to make a triple A game, nor am I inexperienced. I want to make something good enough for early access with that money, and go from there. I have modding and QA experience, and I'm OK at 3D, design and I am a business development student in a non-IT field. I have about 20k I can put in myself.

Not actually half bad. Unity's inbuilt UI is stupidly powerful, and exposes everything from the projection matrix used to how you define your anchors.

Might be a bit overkill though. It could be helpful for being able to play and see what looks nice though.
>>
>>149882743
Usually if you can't beat it yourself it's a sign that it's going to be nearly impossible for someone else to do it. In my experience it's best to aim for "easy, but not mindless" for yourself to give randoms a hard time.

you may be thinking of HaxeFlixel, HaxePunk or others
>>
>>149883358
You can render everything to a pixel perfect resolution if you want. Nothing stopping you, and it even has starter kits set up for that purpose.

>>149883498
What anon says here is important though.
My #1 use of Unity is just to quickly get something on the screen while considering engines. The sooner you can have a small, mspaint shitty game the sooner you'll be inspired to actually finish it.
>>
>>149883358

Yes. You can have pixel perfect rendering, but you have to fiddle with a bunch of settings for each project to get it right. It's tedious, but you have to do it only once.
>>
>>149883358
I think that only applies to using 2D sprites outside of the UI system. It is solvable but is a pretty big pain in the ass. Half pixel offsets are fucking up my shit though.

In top down (Diablo camera) games, how do you handle the case where there's something between the player and the camera? Do they just engineer levels so that it never happens?
I've been playing Torchlight for ages trying to figure out what they do but I just can't notice it. It seems like it's a problem that's so well solved that you don't notice the solution.
>>
>>149886997
Pretty much it comes down to level design as you guessed. There are workarounds, for example in torchlight the player's silhouette can be seen even if you're standing behind a solid object but generally you want to design your areas so that there's no or minimal obstructions on the camera's side of the scene.

Why not? The market is made up of people. People are not (all) self-interested agents as economic theory models them. People, in general, don't like unfairness when they are made aware of it. It's why there's a market for free range eggs or fair trade clothes - people are willing to pay more for a fair working environment.

marketing doesn't mean shit if the game looks like a shit game.

firstly that is a mecha game. a game that is a niche.

secondly it has pixel art for the type of game that would feel better for a normie if it had 3D models. liking pixel art in such type of game is niche.

the game relies on two niches, which might not overlap at all. I mean, how many players specifically will like isometric pixel art mecha games. More people like pixelart games, more people like isometric games, more people like mecha games than people who like isometric pixelart mecha games.

IMO their failure was thinking that nostalgia features are liked by people for what they are rather than for what the specific nostalgia features usually come bundled with.

>isometric
Baldurs Gate or Fallout style RPG

>pixelart
some too deep for me art game or a rehash of a popular platformer like Metroid or Mario

>mecha
3D hack and slash action game with lots of flahy lights and edgy anime characters

This is literally never the grounds to decide between then two.
Use a struct to abuse copy-by-value functions.
Sprite A might be blue. We assign sprite B to be the colour of A.
If A changes at a later date, it's likely that we don't want the colour of B to change.

Yes, this.
It's like asking why people use for loops instead of while loops. You can get the exact same functionality from both, but they each imply different use cases. A c-style struct ensures that the size of the overall struct will be no bigger than the sum of the sizes of the data. With classes no such assumption is made. This can matter for APIs like OpenGL vertex buffers where you must just pass a stream of arbitrary data and a format.

Good sources also reddit, twitter, emailing gaming industries relating to your games, emailing youtubers etc

This can be done in Unreal Engine 4 though

>Environment for good graphics off the shelf
>Terrain editing possible, (seen here https://youtu.be/dnKXqVm3Fu8?t=1m40s)
>Massive Multiplayer also possible and there is a code-free starter kit for it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18a48lHofMo

So no, you don't need to make your own engine. You can always fine-tune UE4 with your own C++ code

Do it like all sane people do it. Allocate a big ass chunk at the start and do your own allocation solution with that. Use winapi's virtualalloc if you want to set a specific starting address for your chunk, so you can debug more nicely.

WordPress is not static, it requires php and MySQL.

You might want to try Joomola, if your server has php support and an SQL database installed. If not, then sites like GitLab and GitHub always mentions this Jekyll thing, but I really don't know what that is or how it works, but as I see it's some sort of actual static site editor, generator, so you might want to check that.

This isn't Democrats vs Republicans here, m8.

An intelligent developer listens to both, the experts on the field and the normie consumers. The key is the skill of interpretation. You can get a lot of valuable feedback from normies if you know how to interpret their feedback. Some normie feedback is legit at face value. Some normie feedback is worthless sperging. Some normie feedback is mixed between both. You need to process that feedback. Most often the thing they complain about has nothing to do with the actual reason that sets them off. So you must distill their feedback and find what "really" caused their sperging. If you can master that skill, you are golden.
>>
>>149895025
It's a generic program class (used in all C# programs by default) that runs the MonoGame Game class with the using statement, meaning it also disposes it on close.

Besides, your beef is with the MonoGame dev team, it's what you get in a new MonoGame project. (Or really the XNA team, since it was the same in XNA.)

If you're doing anything significant allocating beyond game initialization is a no-no.
1) Heap allocs/frees are really fucking slow.
2) Doing your own means you can track the behavior of it and see where memory is going, which has the added advantage of - as long as you limit yourself withing the original chunk - not having to worry about memory leaks

Well, for some reason, I find this style appealing. As I see, you are right, this might be just the meme of our time, since I couldn't find any games from the 8 and 16 bit era with this style, but you can find many like this in current flash games or on Itch. If the color selection is right, they could create a very comfy atmosphere. I don't know, they just hit the right notes for me.

I know what you mean, people laughed about putting buckets on NPCs heads in Skyrim in order to steal from them without being detected.. sure its still for an NPC to let you do that, but besides that, it'd be incredibly unrealistic for them to be able to see THROUGH the bucket. People love to shit on Skyrim but that whole family of games takes a lot of risks, sometimes it doesn't work out, but at least theyre trying new or ambitious things in the first place, rather than the same old game mechanics/world

Are there devs with finished or multiple games? I'm not talking about guys who made it to Steam then vanished. Just simple anons, who are making or have made multiple games.

I always get the feeling when I'm looking at the progress posts, that everyone is posting about the same game all the time, then he/she just vanishes.

The only exception who comes to mind is bunny dev. I know his previous game with the rotating square and the balls was a ton of fun, then he felt he exhausted the idea enough, and moved to Bunny Idol. Another exception would be the anon who do the nightly game dev challenges.

You know when you import a rigged .fbx into a 3D modelling suite, you have the bone nodes(?) but not the actual bones connecting them, you can stretch the mesh around because there isn't a length limit like there would be with a proper rig.

Is it trivial to link them up so you can no longer stretch stuff?

This is why it's not common to see a dev here with already finished game.

1. They feel like they're too good for this place, and are right in that assesment

I'm so glad people remember Colorfall. Actually I want to get back to it because it needs just a couple of finishing touches then I can publish it FOR FREE on the play store.

Idol Comm@nder was born from one of the ideas I had for Waifu Jam.
My original main game was this. I abandoned it because I was still ignorant (and still am) but I plan to go back to it and hopefully move forward with it.
This game is the number one reason I started gamedevving.

>>
>>149906578
That's a difficult question. You could work on a game for the rest of your life and never finish adding content to it.

You basically have to set out some goals early on and achieve them. i.e. 10 levels, 2 hours of gameplay, etc.
>>
>>149906578
For me it was when I decided I was done finagling with it. It had a beginning, middle and end, with potential for endless additions but I was done.

honestly though I plan to remake it later with more levels...

I disagree with these examples. Throughout design and development you refine a list of features and, optionally, a plot/campaign. When the product and the non-static design are sufficiently close, and you are satisfied, you release. But yes, you could work forever, so you need to know when to rein it in to keep the project from becoming larger than it is worth.

Imagine Animal Crossing, same vibe, same comfyness, similar art style so
>fishing, catching bugs, looking for plants, fossils, gems

Except:
>instead of a village, you are in a huge forest
>instead of a mayor, you're a wandering camper
>instead of animal villagers, you're completely alone
>instead of decorating your house and running errands, you explore the forest
>you can meet other travelers like you and talk wit them, but they will leave after a while
>sell/buy/trade stuff, go on adventures together with other campers

>set up your tent when you want to save
>you can choose where to unmount it and bring it with you or leave it
>if you don't bring it with you, you have to go back there to save or you can build another one and save on the spot
>set up camp fires to keep wild life
>build traps to protect your tent
>find and explore hills, lakes, caves, beaches, mountain tops, etc.

One of the things I wanted was to make the players get lost and look for landmarks like "oh there's that weirdly shaped rock I saw before, that must mean I'm getting close to that other place" etc. I even planned on having a "tree-marking" feature where you can put marks on trees so you can find them later.

>how did you promote? because i literally did next to nothing because fuck giving steam new users.
Sadly I forget to activate Google analytics from day one, so I don't know exactly where people were coming from. Though Steam counted for 80-90% of the traffic, through the Greenlight Lists.
I made a lot of efforts on the logo (pic related) to attract the eyes. The trailer was extremely effective.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VrRv0nVz-g

41% of people who looked at the page voted yes.
So I just had to wait for more people to see the page.

But after 8 days, the game was dropped from the Greenlight Lists. I go from 200 votes per day to 15 votes per day in 3 days.

Until that point, I almost didn't promote the game at all. I just made a small thread on /r/linux_gaming which got 60 upvotes (that's small, even though lot of redditors came to the page).
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/4tpuw7/porting_my_game_to_linux_before_launch_god_is_a/

There are two small sites who talked about my game (not a lot of views for my greenlight):
http://www.alphabetagamer.com/god-is-a-cube-nanomachines-rising-alpha-demo/
http://www.oneangrygamer.net/2016/07/god-is-a-cube-brings-a-new-type-of-puzzle-game-to-steam-greenlight/7423/

I continued to talk about the game on Facebook and IRC, but all my friends already voted for it.
I know a bit the guy who made SpaceChem (and Infinifactory), he retweeted my announcement and got a boost who greenlighted me.

My plan included a web demo to release on Kongregate & Co to reach a few tens thousands of people. Finally I didn't have to release it (so I'm keeping it for my pre-sale on my site).

I never counted on artificial communication (press), only on organic communication. I think it's better to convince people themselves, rather than counting on someone else to talk about you. That's why I put so much work on the trailer. I think it's better to touch deeply a few people, rather than touch lightly a lot of people.

>Though Steam counted for 80-90% of the traffic, through the Greenlight Lists
Huh, that's interesting.
I guess that having an eye-catching icon and name means a lot.

Do you always get removed from the Greenlight list after a set period of time (always 8 days) or do you just get bumped out by newer additions to the list?

Even if you have a slow connection you can make use of an extension that preloads images.
Also there is nothing more obnoxious than data loss.

same, I have gaping holes in my art skills but not enough time to 1MA a game + practice + actually draw things

would you trade all your other skills to be actually good at something?
>>
>>149920116
Loomis has a lot of books published. Some are simple beginner books some are targeted at more experienced artist. This book in particular is really basic stuff it assumes you know how to draw a circle and not a very good one at that. It get serious about half way through, but buy then if you follow what the books says ( practice what it tells you ) you will be able to handle it.

Good luck anon.

How
>>
>>149920134
Don't really see how you can avoid some centralization at least if you want to e.g. render into a texture from a camera and then use that texture elsewhere, there needs to be some way for both the camera and whatever else is using the texture to use the same thing and the way I see it that's best done with a UUID identifying the texture in a central map.

can someone tell me what I am doing wrong here? Math is not my strong point.

I'm trying to get an object to orbit a point.

orbitx = target.x + cos(30)*600;
orbity = target.y+ sin(30)*600;
Len = point_distance(0,0,orbitx,orbity)

motion_add(lengthdir_x(Len,image_angle),speed)

m8 that shits extremely obvious.
Please don't do it in your actual games.
And if you do it in your music, please add more depth to it.

That and people who reverse vocals with globs of reverb are awful.
>>
>>149920923
yeah, soulless ambient music is very easy to make if you just take a song and paulstretch it. but maybe everyone will praise you because you will be the genius minimalist composer
