Every time I try and get into Thaumcraft I quickly burn out on it before I make any real progression. Not because of the specific scanning you need to do in the beginning. Not because of the boring research. Not even because of having to find around searching for nodes because you can never find one specific aspect.
It's because I can not for the life of me create a good looking area for it. No matter what I do it always turns out ugly or too cramped.

What? Just set out space of an infusion altar and from there build a small study table for your arcane workbench and research table and another room with a Thaumatorium and Arcane Furnace. Have all your jars in a backroom behind the Arcane Furnace. If you even want you can have a little tunnel for a golem to run back and forth through to sort your essentia if you don't want nice clean pipes.

Just use more than one fucking material. You did a great job on the rest of the exterior, then dropped a one-block-turn on top. Add some extra detail on them, maybe with the purple block you're using.

>I wonder if the game is going to throw any shitfit if I move from the original version into yours.
It might a little bit over certain things. JewSunrise codes almost everything as sub blocks/items - so those which I've removed things from, it might have a hissy fit over blocks/items with invalid meta or damage values. I'll have to test compatibility from old version when I get closer to a release build.

I wanted to make my magic room for witchery in the basement of my base, but the manual says I need to have more living things for more powerful results with the altar, my question is:
Whats the most effcicient place to put an altar?
Does it work if I put it like 5 or 6 blocks below the trees? or do I need to make it more close?
The basement is from the window to two blocks at the right of the wood.
>>
>>149839232
>Why are you even playing a sandbox game then?
To do sandbox things, anon
I'd rather spend my time on interior decoration, exploration, and actually doing shit in general, than spending days on end doing what worldgen can do in an instant without having to strip mine sections of the world first, all in service of having a space to do the shit I actually want to do

And if you're going to make something worse than the game can make for you, there's really no point anyway
You could have spent all that time getting a way to teleport a twilight forest dungeon into the overworld and came away with something just as spacious but more structurally and visually interesting

They also go with the color pallete of the rest of the building. You either want to go with something complementary (Purple with a dark blue) or contrasting (Purple with a white) but nothing too drab and in-between, like you did.

Unless there's a lighting glitch, you've paired Purple/Black/White with a plain drab grey/grey. Go with either something brighter (Quartz/Marble) or something darker (Another type of Grimstone? Coal?) for the roof.
>>
>>149841145
>>149838007
Reminder you can just delete the lang folder in the resourcepack.
>>
>>149840021
>An altar has a range of about 14 (to 16) blocks to collect power and a range of 14 (to 16) blocks to distribute power (the distribution range can be extended to 28 (to 32) blocks by placing an Arthana onto the altar). Any Heart Glyphs, Distilleries, Spinning Wheels or Kettles must be within this range in order to draw power from the altar. Devices can only draw power from a single altar; it is therefore important to upgrade the altar rather than making multiple altars. Devices can share a single altar.

If I were to make a suggestion, I would go under the forest from the basement area indicated and set up there. Make it look like a wet and dingy dungeon-esque area for aesthetics, where you can do more forbidden magicka. Bonus points for using trap doors to hide the area.
>>
>>149842181
I disagree. You say "drap", but I say "muted." The sheet metal is close in color to the grimstone while providing a different texture.

Im not sure, as another option, I can make the magic stuff inside the magic forest that is like 250m from my base, which would be more work needing, but would look better in there.
>>
>>149843026
The biome isn't important, what's important is what's AROUND the altar. Different types of trees, flora, etc.

If you put the altar close enough to the surface with an Arthana, it should be more than enough to do whatever you need. 28-32 blocks inradius is a rather large area, and I'm sure you can make it work without losing too much aesthetic.

>>149842656
>The sheet metal is close in color to the grimstone while providing a different texture.
And that's kind of the point I was making. You want it to be a different color without looking too out of place. I'm not saying "paint it firetruck red" or some shit, I'm saying to go with the complimentary color you have already (the white fences you have scattered through the build) or to go with something dark. I wouldn't say that gunmetal grey goes well with dark grimstone.
>>
>>149843591
>paint it firetruck red
do this
>>
>>149843591
The arthana only affects sent power, not received.
>>149840021
http://ftbwiki.org/Altar
this is the most accurate resource for setting up a powerful altar
>>
>>149843591
I know the biome doesnt actually affect the altar, but it would look more pretty and have more space for diversity of flora on it. And I have way too much crowded oak trees on there, A LOT, which doesnt give good options for flora diversity unless I stop being lazy and cut it all.
I might make a little starter magic dungeon down there and as I get to mid/late game Im gonna make a magic base around the magic forest.
Thansk famalam.

There's a list of altar values for various plants/blocks/etc on a wiki somewhere. I ended up putting a whole bunch of farms on the 10 layers underneath the altar, since it allows something like 50 of each crop to boost the altar. The different types of logs and leaves are each counted separately too.

I am. Not really sure how I'd document it though, since "just read through the classes until you find what you're looking for, use critical thinking and logic, then trial and error testing" won't make a very good guide.
As much as we shitpost about Vazkek, his code is reasonably well laid out - so botania (or new dawn fork) might have actually been a really good choice to start out on.

Perhaps, tell me what you want to learn / what you're struggling with, and I'll do my best to explain (with pictures, depending) how I've been doing it

It works and takes fucking forever to produce a fully-grown one, but I don't think I'm satisfied with how the leaves are turning out. I'm actually blending the Apricorn color into the colors the foliage shading code gives you, but 50/50 is too high, and 75/25 is so muted.

Hey family I run EsforesCraft and I was wondering if there are people that want to play but can't because they don't have access to a premium account.

If the server allowed cracked players (protected by registering a password) would you play?

I'm considering allowing non-premium players and I'm trying to figure out how many people, if any, would join or if it's even worth going through the trouble.

take this screenshot as a gift

Get some modifiers on that, bro. Wither skull, Filled Chalice, and a Candelabra should give you plenty of power and recharge to run early to midgame stuff. From there you can toss down some vines, some spanish moss, and other things. According to that spreadsheet, water helps too.

Brass plates, in fact. And hardened leather, so you'll need pamwax, but you'll want to have that anyway so you can make forestry bags.

After playing IE Skyblock these recipes actually seem kind of reasonable. This one has Pyrotheum Dust (same recipe as TE's dust, but sets you on fire if you don't wear hazmat gear), Hot Kanthal Ingots (chrome-iron-aluminum), and crushed Aer crystals.

Hmm. These hold 8 times more fluid per block, but only the half as much fluid per material cost compared to steel tanks. They don't autoeject like RC tanks do so it's harder to fill a fluid pipe to capacity. But they do keep their contents when picked up with a wrench.

I'll have to work these into my builds now that I know I have them.

Make it based on materials that hurt those from the opposing side when used. Or simply cause ore blocks from one side to drop cobble (or stone for Silk Touch'd tools) when someone from the other side tries to mine them.

Huh, I only had the arthana and the candelabra, but I already moved to a better location and by just randomly putting everywhere crops and tress and grass I got 3k+ which is way more with little work.
Also I havent got all the items for most of the altar stuff but I seem to have it all more stable now.

Kill yourself so you can put your head on the altar.
>>
>>150057729
my idea was either this, or having it be a really complex branching system where going to far into magic or too far into tech makes creating devices of equivalent usage more inane to make.
So if you go alchemy or dorf you're going to have no problems crafting things, but it's going to be really simple stuff.
Or if you go full star trek, you'll have a really hard time making a thing to make you immortal, whereas if you go full wizard that'd be easy, but teleportation would be complex or something.
>>

Getting all vanilla plant life (those in pots not counted) will give you more than enough, really. Adding Witchery plant life, including those acquired from Mutandis spam, helps a lot too. Oh, crops count too, but of course you don't want to have your main crop farm for that.

I usually have my Spanish Moss and Vine farm near my altar because they grow very fast, and so it Glint Weed. A full list of items counted for altar power is on the ftbwiki.

>Can I possibly get a player head tho?

There's a few ways. Botania lets you straight up craft them on the runic altar. If you have TiCon, you can arm something like an AA with a beheading weapon/cleaver and stand in front of it. If you have Headcrumbs you can get all kinds of player heads from the named player "zombies".

Cool, I accidentally scienced a bit and found out that you need 250mB of blood per HP of the mob you want to kill in Evilcraft's spirit furnace (so for example, killing a slime takes 250mB and an Enderman takes 10000mB). Haven't checked whether it treats the mob dying as a player kill though.
I'll leaving sciencing around blood collection for later, hopefully I'll be able to power mob drops on pigs that fall to their death.

I've been used to modded Minecraft, but then I decided to go back to vanilla for some time. Here are my thoughts, ask me "why" and I'll explain them.

1. Modpacks care too much about quantity of content instead of quality or consistency.
2. Pipes are only a convenience. Vertical transportation is hacky but possible without them.
3. TiCon's hammer is a godsend and should be implemented in vanilla.
4. What worries me the most about the new combat system isn't that it's "better" or "worse", but largely irrelevant.
5. It's nice not having to see a bunch of different ingots of the same metal.
6. Vanilla redstone has some fun mechanics, but it's too limited for what players want to do.
7. Plenty content of certain mods actually make the game less fun. Among them: ExU's Cursed Earth, Soul Shards, Minefactory's Grinder
8. What was Team Cofh thinking with that tiered crap??? Vanilla tiers are already shitty enough.
9. Food is too abundant both in vanilla and in modded Minecraft.
>>
>>150079545
10. Filters are possible in vanilla, but too annoying and clumsy to bother.
11. Due to the lack of decent progression, vanilla is slowly centralizing around villagers: build sugar cane farm to trade with them, build slime farm to build sugar cane farm...
12. We don't need auto-harversters. We need only auto-planters and a good way to redirect seeds.
13. Spice of Life and other mods that try to address (9) are overdoing it. Simpler approaches as Better than Wolves' work better.
14. Fuck off those "barely relevant mechanics" as moon phases. Those make the game shallower.
15. Beds and bone meal do make the game less fun.
>>
>>150079828

Yes, and it's what I've been doing in my game - using the bed only to set up spawn point instead of skipping the nights, and using bone meal for bone blocks. But this takes a conscious decision instead of being product of good design.

3. oh shit yes please

4. yup

5. forge should have done unification long ago but apparently lexmanos is an idiot for allowing 10 different types of copper (I know some mods have configs for that but whatever)

6. vanilla redstone really needs redlogic or projectRed mechanics. COME ON MOJANG IT'S FUCKING 2016 YOU FUCKERS

7. those mods are a stupid solution to a stupid vanilla problem of acquiring items from mobs only and no other ways

8. agree

9. the whole health system is retarded

12. vanilla just needs better ways to harvest or plant thins, not really automation

I just wish they'd implement some official way of moving items vertically that didn't make so much noise.

This. All money for this - when you need to design "shut up/off" features for your builds for non-gameplay reasons as sound, you know shit's bad.

(IMHO this could be solved with the dropper making a far lower noise and keeping the dispenser as it is.)
>>
About RS signal:

Vanilla is too limited in what the player can do, and stuff ends too large and clumsy for no good reason. However, wires usually lack any type of "small puzzle" to solve, they end being a bit too convenient.

1. Depends on the modpack. For the generic kitchen sink, that's true, but there's many smaller packs. However, it is partially true - many modded players seek out novelty.
2. A huge amount of things added by mods are hacky but possible in vanilla. That's fine.
3. Vanilla does not need that. At least, not yet.
4. I hope in mods to make it relevant. The API endpoints are out there.
5. A well-configured modpack. As for unification, every time someone tries to unify all ore blocks another modder throws a fit. One'd be foolish to assume nobody ever requested that.
6. In many places, it has the wrong limitations.
7. Plenty content of vanilla actually makes the game less fun too.
8. The problem really is that modded Minecraft players hate balancing based on time or based on loss. This is how microcrafting came to be.
12. We already have auto-harvesters, and their name is pistons.
15. Bone meal and beds address the same problem faced by modders - too many players hate waiting, not realizing that a requirement of time is what often leads to creative solutions.
>>
>>150079545
>What was Team Cofh thinking with that tiered crap??? Vanilla tiers are already shitty enough.

Machine tiers above Basic are mostly a convenience for people who don't want to build dozens of crushers and smelters. In fact, the higher -

>>
>>150079545
>>150079828
Nobody is forcing you to use any feature from any mod, if you find them unfun or if you just plain hate the idea behind them then ignore them. It's a sandbox game after all, you should have fun in whichever way you prefer.
>>
>>150079545
1. most recent modpacks I hear about are busy trying to turn minecraft into a goal-centric game that drags you along by the ear; anything involving HQM should be thrown out.
2. when one has a variety of gadgets that need stuff in and out, and tons of crap that needs to go into chests, a proper way to automate movement of items is a natural thing. vanilla's idea of item transport is shit.
3. the hammer is useful, but like everything in ticon, lacks drawbacks. if dinnerbong was to copy it and had a brain it'd help with stone/netherrack but not ores so picks would remain relevant. ticon... is a broken mess anyway.
4. the "new" "combat" "system" is an obnoxious waste that takes the already shit combat and makes it worse by trying to apply things that work in games actually made for satisfactory combat and putting it in a game whose combat eternally sucks ass.
5. unification, etc etc, lex is a retard.
6. vanilla redstone can be interesting, but the lack of compact logic gates and the inability to work on walls/cielings makes it take up too much space.
7. cursed earth is fun-damage in that it spreads. soul shards are fun damage in that they're grindy. the grinder is fine, fuck you.
8. wat.
9/13. the hunger mechanic is pointless and efforts to expand on it just make it tedious.
>>
>>150079828
10. yes.
11. it's a sandbox, "progression" is something that need not be complex. villagers as a means to every end are still stupid.
12. this depends on the crop and what kinds of amounts one needs. certain things that need to be handled en masse certainly do need autoharvest. most food-centered farms, not so much. but again, 9/13 - shit mechanic.
14. "complexities make things shallow" u w0t m8? rather, the problem with moonphases is that anything you do that makes them relevant makes them a nuisance and a time waster.
15. you're an idiot, shut the fuck up. just how you can find waiting around with your thumb up your ass waiting for shit to grow "fun"... likewise, because minecraft combat sucks, being able to skip the "mobs annoying you while you're trying to do something constructive" period is no reduction in fun. if you want combat-fun, play a game whose combat isn't shit. also rain, noisy, pointless, etc. if I want to fight shit I'll go caving/use a dungeon mod/etc.

Is there an actual way of balancing ProjectE?
I've seen it turn modpacks into MAWPC and I still can't think of a way to make it a decent mod.

But well I guess we could start with determining if it's a magic mod (Transmutation Tablet) or a tech mod (Klein Sphere, Red Matter and Dark Matter).
>>
>>150084626
>But well I guess we could start with determining if it's a magic mod (Transmutation Tablet) or a tech mod (Klein Sphere, Red Matter and Dark Matter).
And why the fuck would that matter?
You can disable everything from the mod in its config, change the EMC value for every item, and even make its things require Thaumcraft infusions (although that makes them much cheaper). If you try hard enough, I don't see how you could not baluns everything.
>>
>>150084774
>You can disable everything from the mod in its config, change the EMC value for every item, and even make its things require Thaumcraft infusions (although that makes them much cheaper). If you try hard enough, I don't see how you could not baluns everything.
That's not the point and I'm sure a lot of people have done similar things. What I want to know is if the mod itself can be completely redone so that the finished product can be considered as polished as Thaumcraft or Thermal Expansion.
>And why the fuck would that matter?
Design principles. Well, tech can be considered magic at some point, but aesthetics rely on whether it's magical or mechanical in nature.
>>
>>150084512

I'm aware well-configured modpacks make a HUGE difference, but most really aren't.

The hammer isn't needed in vanilla... but it encourages underground building by making it less grindy, a good thing IMHO.

I agree plenty content in vanilla makes the game less fun too. However, it's a PITA to remove, unlike the ones I mentioned.

Pistons were part of my point with auto-harvesters. Also water.

>>150082772
Yes, I am saying that beds in general make my game less fun, since I can simply skip the night instead of dealing with its mobs.

>>150083153
Note, those were simply personal observations, I am NOT in a crusade against those mod features. OK?

But yes, I am aware I can simply ignore them. However, realizing which are the ones I should ignore is part of the deal.
>>
>>150079545
>It's nice not having to see a bunch of different ingots of the same metal.
This is a problem I have with these mods, too. Recoloring the vanilla ingots/armor sets are so easy it's not even funny. At least add some effects with a full set, like feather falling or Fire Aspect.

Otherwise, the rest of your points are fair. I think Shields are the best thing Vanilla has added as of late, and no one's making an attempt to copy it to earlier versions. Battlegear's shield system sucks ass.
>>
>>150083367
1. Those at least are trying... most simply dump some mods and call it done.
2. Sure. I mean that pipes are nowhere obligatory like some people imply, but they're nice to have, thus a convenience.
3/5. I agree.
4. The worst part is that combat is a side, not core mechanic of Minecraft. It needs to be improved, sure, but there are plenty things in vanilla that should have priority.
6. Not only it takes too much space but, by taking said space, it doesn't allow to do certain stuff.
8. I meant the vanilla progression is shit ("more of the same" - each tier looks the same but it's faster, more durable and mines more stuff) and that TDyn/TE "tiers" are shit on the same way.
11. Shallow sandbox aren't fun, and the villager mechanic is shallow, so it's problematic it's centralizing stuff.

14. You're mixing two concepts: the gameplay you can have (shallow/deep) and the amount of individual stuff you need to memorize (complex/simple).

Ideally, a game should be both simple and deep. However, this isn't always possible, so you add stuff that makes it more complex to make it also deeper.

Mojang keeps adding stuff that makes the game complex, as moon phases, but it never fleshes them out enough to make the game also deeper.

7/9/13/15 - I'll answer those in another post.
>>
>>150087275
>Yes, I am saying that beds in general make my game less fun, since I can simply skip the night instead of dealing with its mobs
Just don't use them, ya dingus. Take responsibility for creating your own enjoyment.
>>
>>150083367
9/13: crops and animals are a huge deal in MC. But in older times, players only needed food when they got hurt. So the hunger mechanic was implemented to give the players an incentive to farm/hunt/raise stuff.

For most players, this is better than simply "food heals", but the hunger mechanic was implemented in such a crappy way that farming for food feels like a chore.

One of the problems is what I mentioned - food is too abundant. There is no challenge here, just "oh look I need to eat". It would be OK if farming was pleasing just by itself, but it is just "walk a bit, click, right click". [Yes, farming needs some improvements too.]

7. Did you ever try building a mob farm without those? Building is fun, and it's one of the core mechanics of Minecraft. Fuck, one can say building is what made MC popular.

In vanilla, a mob farm is usually composed of a dark chamber, a mob transportation system and a killing device.

However, you don't need to build a large dark chamber with Cursed Earth or Soul Shards. It gets far simpler. You also don't need to bother about killing devices or mob transportation with the grinder.

TL;DR: The problem with those is stuff you stop doing because of those.

Also, as a friendly reminder, you don't need to cry "waaah fuck you! shut up!" like a kid just to disagree.

More to come...
>>
>>150083367
Bone meal is related to the hunger problem, and it is one of the reasons people don't need to build interesting large farms but only copy some Youtube tutorial for a 5x5x3 farm. It applies to trees too, so there's no encouragement for building large tree farms like in TerraFirmaCraft.

Beds for setting spawn points up are fine. Problematic, but fine. However, their ability to skip nights mean you don't need to fight the mobs. Yes, combat sucks, waiting sucks, but the solution is fixing said stuff instead of letting players to bypass mechanics.

And again. Those are my personal observations. *You* play the way *you* want, I'm just commenting stuff.

Also. It looks like we got some Minecraft Forum influx by the old "IF U DUN LIEK FEATURE X DUN UZE IT! X-D" discourse. So lemme talk about games in general.

Yes, the players can avoid features they dislike in a game. However:
1. This does NOT apply to any competitive environment like SMP (anarchy, factions, not colab) is often.
2. Development time is a limited resource. Time spent with retarded feature = time not spent with another feature.
3. It would work if players knew game design - most do not. They do not realize if a feature has a negative impact on their fun.

Also. Most players are great to detect problems, but shitheads to give them solutions.

FOR EXAMPLE, beds skipping the night was something probably suggested to Notch; the players identified an issue correctly (the mobs are annoying) but didn't solve it (just skip the mechanic). Stuff like that is the reason "we" (/mcg/) always say Minecraft is shit, and yet keep playing it because of other stuff.

>>
>>150090754
Thank you for your deep insight and hot opinions. Those features will now be removed from the game and all mods.
>>
And I'll rant a bit against Mojang. Hey >>150090293, just skip it.

"Notch i wanna petz", "WAAAH JEB DONT RUIN MY PIGMEN/GOLEM FARMZ!", "moar biomes plz". Regardless of being good or bad design decisions (removing the drops from golems and pigmen was a shitty one), they always let the players decide the design, because Mojang lacks balls.

It always had that shitty "ask me enough and I'll give you what you ask" tendency, and this hurts a lot the game.

So who's the game designer? In this case, the players. But again, players are great to detect problems but shitheads to give the problems solutions, so you get shit mechanics and features being implemented over and over again.

Those look like they're just vanilla methods that handle which slot, the stack size and durability nbt data of an itemstack.
I don't think you need to worry about those if you've already been manipulating item nbt data directly.

Personal observation that pipes aren't really a huge of a deal.

>4.and?
Bitter that Mojang wasted so much time with it instead of doing something more meaningful.

>6.you just need to git gud
I can do stuff as piston doors and auto-smelters just fine with vRS, but in general vRS contraptions get so large that players don't bother.

>8.so you're one of those "I should be able to make everything after my first mining trip" techfags
No. After each mining trip, I want to unlock different stuff, not more versions of the same stuff.

>11. pic related
Do you even play vanilla? Serious question.

>7. fun is subjective
Yes, what's considered fun varies considerably among individuals. But I think that most players will agree about something being fun or unfun if they belong to the same target audience.

Other points: develop a bit more if you want to discuss them. If you don't want, that's fine too.

tiered stuff is fine as long as they also include new stuff alongside it. it's nice to be able to choose between a small cheap tank and an expensive fuckhuge one instead of only having the option of using multiple ones that are somewhere in the middle

Ah, in your example the tanks are probably getting two different roles (for example as buffer vs. bulk transportation), this is fine. What I complain the most about Thermal [____] tiers is stuff that serves the exact same purpose getting, like, five versions.

>for me
That's fine. "vRS is limits *me* a bit too much."
>>

About the villagers: I might need to slap a "for me" here too, but here's the thing: they play almost no role in modded, but a huge role in vanilla.
* You can effectively trade sugar cane for diamonds (cane > paper > emerald > diamond tool). You don't need that in modded because better mining.
* Iron: iron golem farms.
* Mending is powerful as fuck, but the only reliable ways to get it are fishing [NOPE] or villagers. You don't use it in modded because 1.10.
* Do you hate the "LOL SO RANDUM X-D" enchanting? Villagers. You don't need it in modded because of arcane infusion, Enchanting+ and others.
* Got some spare rotten flesh? Sell it to villagers. Plenty mods give it other more interesting uses.

I'm beginning to see them as the vanilla equivalent of EE2 for me...

Why don't modders move to 1.9+ versions of minecraft?

I realize it's a big jump, but it's been done before. Nobody wanted to go to 1.7, but now it's the staple. We've been here for a long time now, longer than any other minecraft version that modding got 'stuck' on.
I know some of the big names have started making forays into 1.9, but obviously it won't be a move to newer versions until the modding community as a whole makes the shift.

Once people make the plunge updating isn't a big deal in each version. Eventually another big update will come that breaks mods, but even so we've gone through it before and it's been for the benefit of all modders and mod users once everyone settled in. Maybe we'll get stuck on 1.13 or something, who knows, but at least we'll have reaped the benefits on Minecraft beyond 1.7.10.
>>
>>150116298
The issue is that it's almost a whole different engine under the hood. Porting is neigh impossible and it's easier to just rebuild from the ground up. It's like building a new car when you did it already.

This >>150116725, also in addition to the mandatory x to y version changes, lex manos goes out of his way to rewrite huge chunks of unnecessary code that serves no benefit to anyone and to top it off he doesn't even document those changes. So you have to deal with mojang making extra work and lex shitting out even more work you have to do for no reason, when you put it all together its weeks if your lucky, or months of work having to rewrite your mod through all this bullshit, when you could turn around and stay on your version and add another month of content instead. If this was a one time deal it wouldn't be an issue but we go through revisions two to three times a year in major version changes like 1.8 to 1.9 but also minor revisions that forge likes to shit out for 1.9.1 to 1.9.2, 1.9.3, you could easily spend half a year rewriting your code, every year. Hence no one in their right mind voluntarily following these updates to the dot. Did i mention i really fucking hate lex manos and his random fucking changes for no fucking reason? Because fuck those; updating every patch probably would be feasible if he wasn't adding extra mountains of bullshit every-time, mojang's changes are usually simple or easy compared to his code gymnastics. Oh and another reason not to update is that most of the time the new fancy update changes already had mod counterparts in place.

Name the bullshit. ISBRHs were removed due to threading issues with Minecraft's new multicore chunk renderer, which you could already encounter with BuildCraft and Tinker's Construct on large worlds with OptiFine multi-core chunkloading enabled.
>>
>>150116298
Why put forth the effort when there's so much money-making potential left from trivial bug fix releases? They know people will keep playing the 1.7.10 versions no matter what, because most people are too autistic to try new mods on newer versions.
>>
>>150121235
uhh, that's not why they were removed. ismartblockmodels had the exact same problem.

they were removed because lex hates opengl and doesn't think modders should ever touch it, proving how out of touch he is with the entire premise of modding.
>>
>>150124317
You can't touch OpenGL in ISBRHs/ISBMs anyway. You never could.
>>
>>150126117
To give a more technical explanation:

The Minecraft rendering chain, pre-1.8, looked as follows: When a 16x16x16 chunk was to be rendered, a Tessellator was initialized. The Tessellator grabbed a list of vertices, their texture coordinates and color/normal information from the block renderers as it went through them in a for loop. The renderers where a giant, hardcoded chunk of code in RenderBlocks, with a hacked-on-top hook by Forge. Effectively, all you could do is send vertices to the Tessellator. The Tessellator was then called inside an OpenGL display list to draw it as vertex arrays, and the display list was stored for the given chunk.

There was a (theoretical?) workaround which involved abusing the fact display lists store a set of commands for the GPU - you could stop the Tessellator mid-block, change the OpenGL state and restart it - however, that introduced additional performance issues and, often, bugs. Even messing with the state of RenderBlocks or Tessellator's internal values without restoring it created bugs - once, there was a 1.7 bug where placing a machine from a certain mod could rotate all the block textures in the chunk rendered after it by 90 degrees.
>>
>>150116298
lel
why not document any version at all and we'll see who does what
>>
>>150128062
The 1.8+ rendering chain is as follows:

* The block states are collected in a thread-safe manner from chunks. This includes Forge's extended block states, which let you pass objects and arbitrary data to the renderer. It cannot be done any other way safely because there are no thread safety guarantees after this step, and I've managed to run into race condition bugs related to this. This is why passing things like the tile entity that way should be done with extreme caution.
* The chunks are built by creating a pipeline. In Forge, this involves roughly grabbing the model based on the state, taking the list of BakedQuads (or simply quads) generated by it, pushing it through Forge's lighting engine (which is written by RainWarrior; it's much more accurate than Mojang's at the cost of speed on chunk updates, but that's a known issue) and pushing it to the VertexBuffer (a more modern version of a Tessellator). This is all done in multiple threads and with no guarantee of ordering whatsoever.
* The vertices created this way are then uploaded to the graphics card using either display lists or VBOs and stored there.

Now, why wouldn't that OpenGL workaround work? Generally, the rendering chain is different now. You cannot just stop the VertexBuffer and write to OpenGL, as concurrent thread usage of OpenGL is bound to end poorly and the chain is no longer as predictable as it was on 1.7. In the case of VBOs, however, there is no display list - the GPU does not receive a series of OpenGL commands, but a large array of all vertices in a given chunk. The OpenGL state is, thus, not stored at all.

Sorry if it's a bit rambling-y, but it's late and I need to go to sleep. Hope that clears up some confusion.
>>
>>150128795
However, if you want to justify LexManos's hatred of OpenGL, there is one change he made solely for that reason: removal of IItemRenderer, AKA a way to directly use OpenGL for item rendering. Raw OpenGL for items is thus only available for blocks with tile entities on them, as rendering them otherwise could be infeasible.

There's also reasons for that, but they're a bit less clear. Forge added FastTESR in 1.8.9 - it's essentially TESRs without the expensive OpenGL state initialization that happens before every TESR, instead utilizing a VertexBuffer for all of a chunk's TESRs. This means you get a massive performance boost for TESR (aka dynamic) rendering with the limitations of an ISBM - you'd use this for things which update often but don't require flashy effects; at the very least, Chisels&Bits and Charset pipes use it. This also lets you create things like simple item frames or item-based icons on blocks without a TESR, again saving a fair bit of performance.

Charset pipes can, however, only use FastTESR if all the items in the pipe are models and not OpenGL-based renderers; if any item in the pipe uses raw OpenGL, the pipe is forced to switch back to slow rendering.

One obvious downside to this is that rendering text on an item icon is no longer simply calling FontRenderer; new code has to be written for this and the Integrated Circuits author is very unhappy with this.
>>
>>150129354
Errata: "This also" at the end of the second paragraph refers to the item models and not FastTESR.

Generally, the deprecation of raw OpenGL rendering for items is partially trying to prevent GL state breakage (which often happens with buggy mods - not every modder has a good understanding of OpenGL) and partially allowing other mods to cleanly cache those things and use them in more optimized ways. I guess.

After years without involving myself with MC community I just discovered VoxelBox is dead (good riddance really, the admins were complete jerks and thought that the entire community owned them something). Not possible with base thaumcraft. Most autoclickers don't work because the runic matrix needs to look at your thaumbook progress to see if you can even do the infusion recipe. One of the addons adds an "infusion claw" (gadomancy?) specifically for automating infusions.

Fun fact: Neither Minetest nor Terasology, the two most popular open voxel engines, ever gave mods raw OpenGL access. Generally, most voxel engines with an API don't - Minecraft "did" (which it never even actually did in ISBRHs, as I explained) simply as it had no API to begin with.

It's both as long as you don't bunk yourself. [A really, really weak challenge on the current affair of things... but still.]

And while I agree there is an annoyance, it isn't the night mob spawning mechanic itself but the mobs - they suck.

Minecraft is about mining, crafting, and autism.
Combat doesn't feel right.
It's a pain in the ass.

>tfw the revamped combat could be fun but the shitty hitboxes ruin it
>>
>>150173013
Combat is a side mechanic. I agree it's nowhere as important as mining, crafting, building and farming (and autism :^), but it should be there to encourage the core mechanics.

In the current state of the things, it does a shitty job at that, that's why plenty people see it as annoying but unchallenging.

>>150173059
The problem is, if shit was done properly, you shouldn't be waiting. For example, when playing BTW or TFC, the night is often as laborious as the day.

It almost looks like Mojang has no designer... oh wait they haven't, /r/minecraftsuggestions does it for them.
>>
>>150173421
There's already stuff I could be doing at night, but the stuff I WANT to do needs daylight.
>tfc

>>
>>150173421
>but it should be there to encourage the core mechanics.
>In the current state of the things, it does a shitty job at that
A very very very shitty job.
Combat in minecraft literally has no mechanics, it doesn't establish a framework to build off of, nothing's there.
The monsters you fight in no way correspond with how you fight, there is no rhyme or reason to why things are the way they are.
It seems like mojang went, hey this is cool, lets add this.
This is why there are literally no good combat mods.

It also doesn't fit in too much with the spirit of the game, vanilla is supposed to be about exploring, discovery, conquest.
Digging a hole and hiding in it for the night because the skeletons are snipers does not encourage this, nor does it enhance this.
It makes it annoying, less fun, and stupid.

I quite like the way that magnum torches and their ilk make you play when you use them; you have a central encampment, and a small area around that that is completely safe, but after you leave their safezone, it's rape time, especially with stuff like GoG, and mekanism, with it's incredibly high rate of spawning armored mobs, installed.
It makes every excursion something worth preparing for.
>>
>>150173760
Notch added combat as a minor extension of the mining mechanics, you just left click on things that move instead of stone and ores, and added enemies that fit general archetypes to make it "interesting"(not better)
There was no plan behind any of it, and there really is no combat system, or at least there wasn't until mojang screwed with the entire system of world interaction to make combat more "interesting"(still not better)
>>
>>150173760
I wish there was a mod that added mobs on par with GoGs strength but without the waifu shit and didn't spawn them as thick. And no day spawns because I don't find stopping every 5 chunks to kill something whenever I leave my base fun.
>>
>>150173421
>Combat is side *gameplay
>encourage the core *gameplay

>>150173687
In TFC I usually do stuff as organizing items, interior building and crafting at night, so I can use the day for better stuff. Also, when you settle in an area, mobs appear less and less, so you're eventually free to do day stuff at night just fine.

>>150173760
>>150174216
We're on the same page then - they're treating combat as core gameplay and making it more complex trying to fix it. But since it's side gameplay, making it more complex isn't fixing it - on the contrary, it breaks it. [And it wastes precious dev time.]

And it looks like I wasn't the only one reading modder dev diaries...
>>
>>150174378

>>
>>150174553
the concussion creeper is the only thing from that mod that isn't pure undiluted cancer. The fucking dirt monster legitimately pissed me off.
>>
>>150174471
>they're treating combat as core gameplay
I would argue that even worse are the modders who do the same, or even treat combat as if it's the only gameplay, that the only reason to play minecraft is to go to strange dimensions to fight off hordes of annoying retextures of vanilla mobs and kill big poorly designed bosses and craft a new tier of armor and weapons that are a different color

>And it looks like I wasn't the only one reading modder dev diaries...
what
>>
>>150174925
Modders doing it is fine. Modders don't get paid, and players infer the mod quality isn't always on pair with a professional game...

FlowerChild used to talk a lot about this in his dev diaries. I thought you read them because you mentioned the mob archetypes, something he often talked about.

So, after playing 1.10.2 ("Latest"), I decided to play some beta 1.6.6 ("Beta") for comparison... and wow.

* Beta reaches 120fps; Latest reaches 50fps. Beta looks rough and unpolished, but smoother.
* XP "clink!" when mining, stair noises, chest noises, everything is fucking noisy in Latest. Beta is silenter, but what matters (mobs) still make noise.
* In Beta, each animal drops unique resources: feathers, porkchop, leather, wool. This might not make RL sense, but it does game design sense - you have a reason to farm'em all, unlike in Latest. (If only breeding was already implemented...)
* Punching for wool is fun. Seriously.
* Food not stacking was annoying. And the hunger system in Latest is crap, but still better *for me* than the oversimplistic "cooked pork = 4 hearts".
* In Beta, I miss a lot the block diversity of Latest.
>>
>>150176830
matter overdrive is a good one for sci-fi, it's star-trek stuff basically. Very fun; I think the modmaker is planning on making it do space stuff on it's own, but it hasn't reached that point yet.
Some fun laser/phaser/whatever guns, adds some cool worldgen like crashed ships, and it has chests that go "woosh" like the doors from star trek.
>>
Same as >>150176932
TL;DR: Beta is less polished but better in plenty ways, Jeb and others never realized what they had in hands; they kept adding shit instead of improving what was already there.
>>

1.7.10.jar: 5.3MB
1.10.2.jar: 8,2MB

>>
>>150177487
that's probably caused by systemic overhauls and spaghetti-code; not new content.
>>
>>150177786
Yup. Most relevant mechanics and shit present in later versions are already in the beta.

I'm toying with the idea of a backport of the relevant later mechanics as animal permanence, breeding and creating a different hunger system.
>>

I have always wanted a race mod. Like adding the ability to start out as a dwarf, elf or human.
Dwarves would have an easier time to break stone and maybe 2-4 hearts more than normal humans, elves would be able to jump 2 blocks and deal more bow damage or something like that
>>
>>150181891
>not making dorfs 1 or 1.5 blocks tall

>>150181725
There needs to be an addon for blood magic that replaces that godawful ritual system
Could combine that chalk rune system it has now with witchery's chalk system to make a more thematically appropriate and less grindy and ugly ritual system
>>
>>150182074
I want them 1 block high.
And getting a special slot to equip a beard in.

Then you craft different beards made of different materials.
rarer material beard = higher standing in the dwarven society
>>
How bad/good do you think that would be if mobs only spawned on certain "natural" materials?
