I just reached high rank, what are some good looking but "viable" sets?

I think it'd be a lot more enjoyable if hunting styles just added to a play style, rather than taking some things away and adding others.

Removing moves mostly just fucks with someone's playstyle and makes them choose one style for each weapon.

I've been really enjoying aerial gunlance for that reason. Hopping off an enemy allows for a bunch of i-frames as well as a full burst on landing. I don't really care about Gunlance being suboptimal though, as long as I have fun with it. I did not like adept with it, it was way too hard to aim with the counterattack and just didn't seem all that useful.

Besides, if I really care about being optimal I'll just bust out an HBG or something.

Evade 2 is just pointless because it only gives you two more frames of inv. than Evade 1 does, so it's better not to waste the skill points on it. Evade 3 was once worth it, but honestly evade 1 is all you need if you really want an evade skill.

It's from bugs. Get a bowgun that fires poison shots and shoot them. The torch is gone so poison smoke bombs are less effective, but it's another option if you're patient.

"Piercing Boomerang" is an active skill that makes your rangs pierce for a few minutes.
"Big Boomerang" makes your rangs larger and do more damage for a few.

these are absolutely necessary for a good boomerang cat, and it's not too tough to find a cat with them both

"Shock Prison" (Trap) speaks for itself, it's just handy to have. Although it's a really costly skill and you probably won't be using it much. I think it's more for the convenience of, IF you need to trap, AND be a prowler, AND you're solo, you have the option.

"Dung Bomb"s are also a convenience thing.

Then for the passives,

"Boomerang Pro" lets you use rangs quicker (and I think do more damage?) absolutely necessary.
"Earplugs", self explanatory, net you more time to damage.
"Crit Up S" because it's the cheapest extra deeps you can fit on him.

If you have all these skills out of the box, you have the extra space to teach your cat the skills

"Emergency Retreat", which lets you become briefly invincible, heal up, and recover status ailments."
"Strongest Technique" (or however it's called) which gives you 1.5x base attack (+60) and 2x defense or something, if you're not wearing armor. Basically, the Challenger skill for hunters.

These last two skills can be taught to any cat, so although crucial, it's not part of what makes min/maxing a cat rare.

Honestly, you can get a cat with Big/Pierce rangs and Boomerang pro easily, then stick on emergency escape and strongest tech (last one is dlc only and not available yet, though.) and have a cat capable of dealing with pretty much anything in the game. It just won't be ~perfect~

You should try to make a seregios and glavenus axe at village 6 if you intend on completing village before doing anything online. I'd recommend getting the snowbaron lagombi axe once you can.

You are going to want focus and load up (if it's good for the bow you are using) as your main skill. The rest can be damage skills like AuL or Critical eye.
It was common to run Evade extender and evasion skills but now with Adept I'm pretty sure those are useless.

If you want to change your armor try the Rathalos one. The Glavenus armor is interesting for SnS if you find yourself sharpening quite a bit if not it's no worth it.
As for weapons at 6* the best 2 raw SnS are the Narga one and the Seregios one. So you are good if you have the Narga one.

It has a gimmick skill that increases your damage for a while when you sharpen. Another cool gimmick set is the Astalos one with Chain crit, since you keep the aggro with SnS.
If not a good solid LR set is the Rathalos one with AuS(can go to Medium easily) and Weakness exploit.
