Yugioh is such a fucked up autistic game. The rules are impossible, there's been decades of extreme power creep, and the rules text on many cards is longer than Infinite Jest.

Yet there is something magical about the game. Games are often determined in a flash, like a knife fight. But there's also ridiculous combos that let us summon huge super powerful dragons and robots with gratuitous and epic weeb art. There is no set rotation. That means you can always find a secret tech to catch your opponent off guard. And Konami will often release a handful of cards to help out an old deck archetype like they have done recently with Crystal Beasts and Destiny Heroes.

So maybe MTG is more well designed with its focus groups and huge hierarchies of researchers and developers. Maybe Yugioh is fundamentally flawed. But Yugioh has a soul and style that will never be matched. And that's why we keep coming back.

I love Upstart Goblin. I remember when I was first shown the card by a long time friend and mentor of mine. I'd been playing Yu-gi-oh casually for a while before I finally decided to break into the competitive scene. However, as a High-School kid with limited income, I didn't have the funds. My friend sold me his old dark world deck cheap, I didn't need a good deck, I just needed something to play in order to get the hang of playing people in person. In the deck were 3 common copies of Upstart Goblin; after reading the card it peplexed me. "Why would you give your opponent 1000 lifepoints for free?" I asked. He simply chuckled and said "Heh, you have a lot to learn my young padawan".

At the root of it, 3 copies of Upstart Goblin makes your deck close to 37 cards. I'm sure you've all heard that before; but does it really mean much in the long run?

Ask yourself- I want you to really ask yourself. Think about this, okay? Would you play a 43 card deck in a competitive environment? If you answered yes you should probably close the tab and reflect on why you're such a bad player. If you wouldn't play a 43 card deck, 3 more cards then is the current limit, why?.

Well you've probably thought "consistency". Consistency rules Yu-gi-oh! Consistency is what wins championships. Consistency will win you matches much more often than deck power, or flashy plays. All the best decks in the history of Yu-gi-oh have been consistent. The most consistent decks will always win.

You need to go first. Draw and search out your whole deck with Ixtab, Trade-in, Casting out, Allure and PoC, set up the graveyard by filling it with traps and useful Darklords like Superbia, and swarm the field with at least two Darklords in order to disrupt your opponent's plays. Then, on your next turn, you can go for the OTK by using Lucifer, the trap effects in your graveyard, or by Xyz Summoning powerful monsters like Big Eye, Cipher Blade, Gustav Max, etc.

Don't run 3 Trade-In. Don't run Zerato. Don't run Valhalla. Drop the new trap to 1/2. Bump the new spell to 2-3, you want to draw it early because you'll be milling a ton of monsters, preferably Superbia and another guy. After trying it out some more, I don't think Kuribandit is worth it, it's too slow.
