I've never understood why they went ahead and decided to have the wink and nod to the manga with this card. In the manga Yugi tributed Kuriboh, Griffore, and Gaia the Fierce Knight in order to summon Black Luster Soldier, but you literally cannot do that because the Level has to be exact, so that restriction being there makes no sense from a lore perspective. It barely makes any sense in manga because if Yugi wasn't the king of going fucking neg he could have just as easily tributed Gaia and Kuriboh alone. Hell Griffore is fucking EARTH so it doesn't even fit in with the whole "Gaia literally running through the gate of chaos and transforming into the Chaos/Black Luster Soldier

Even without exact levels, it would still be illegal to use all three. Obviously, Kuriboh and Griffore aren't enough by themselves, but Gaia and either one of them meets the requirement, so you're not allowed to Tribute further.

1. In the manga, ritual summons needed you to tribute monsters with combined atk being 1500 or more and then a third monster needed to absorb the power produced by the sacrifice.
2.Griffore is a LIGHT monster in the manga IIRC.
3.Konami made it exact levels and not listing anything just to make it crap in order to balance the grave effect.

How does he suck at game design?

Sure he didn't know what he was doing in Duelist Kingdom but that's because he never intended to make the manga about the card game. It's a ton of work for one guy to invent a whole game on top of making a story and drawing it all out. Duelist Kingdom was basically the experimental phase and the game became more solid once the story hit battle city and he implemented the master rules. Konami basically uses those same rules today and they've worked for years.

Yugioh is such a fucked up autistic game. The rules are impossible, there's been decades of extreme power creep, and the rules text on many cards is longer than Infinite Jest.

Yet there is something magical about the game. Games are often determined in a flash, like a knife fight. But there's also ridiculous combos that let us summon huge super powerful dragons and robots with gratuitous and epic weeb art. There is no set rotation. That means you can always find a secret tech to catch your opponent off guard. And Konami will often release a handful of cards to help out an old deck archetype like they have done recently with Crystal Beasts and Destiny Heroes.

So maybe MTG is more well designed with its focus groups and huge hierarchies of researchers and developers. Maybe Yugioh is fundamentally flawed. But Yugioh has a soul and style that will never be matched. And that's why we keep coming back.
