Admittedly, most of this is my impression based not on indies but on how /v/, /vr/ and random gaming forums seem to judge old 2D games and old polygonal games respectively. I often see Star Fox ("1st gen" polygonal 3D graphics), Ocarina of Time, Spyro (2nd gen 3D) and even Deus Ex (3rd gen 3D) called ugly but not Metroid (2nd gen sprite-based 2D), Super Mario or Disney's Aladdin (3rd gen 2D). Only Atari 2600 games get the same treatment as early 3D.

You have no way of knowing what goes on behind the scenes in code unless it's open source. Even if something is running at 60+ fps, it could be full of bugs and horribly written.

Multiplayer RPG idea:
Crafting profession where players create completely custom spells. You can learn and use these spells yourself or sell them to other players so they can use the spell you created.

Maybe you can do things like assign a particular graphical effect and sound. Give it a particular elemental type and choose if it's ranged, area of effect, etc. Damage multipliers are set based on your character level and crafting skill. Mana cost and cast time are based on how powerful your choices are.

Would this be fun or is it better to just go with completely pre-made spells that everyone has access to?

Just minor improvements to the game.

I have to get around to improving enemy AI though because it's just completely retarded cause I threw it together in a couple of minutes for the turn system testing. It isn't even capable of walking around obstacles and other units yet.

The enemy targeting system is also whack. What do you think, should the enemy always go for the weakest player unit when there are multiple units in range? Like the one with the least health?

Well, the good news is, Mayhem League's (second) demo is now ready!

The bad news is, I'm still getting a mystery cooking error, but ONLY when using Nativization of BPs. So, this demo is updated and functional, but it performs more like the old one (I mean, I've iterated on stuff to minimize cycle cost relative to the first demo, but it won't have the total removal of BP's interop layer cost to the CPU yet, so it's still very much NOT toaster-friendly)

I'm still working on isolating that bug, and I'll try to get a nativized copy up and running, BUUUUT I promised a demo today and I am, if nothing else, set on keeping that promise.

When objects reach zero health they are simply deleted now, but I will make it so that each kind of object treats death differently.

Gravity is, in this system, I assume, a measure of the change in velocity each frame. A negative gravity makes it fall (its speed changes by -15 each frame), a positive gravity would actually make it fall UP - its vertical speed would increase - upwards - every frame it was in the air.

Anyhow the way i prefer to do my collision is to draw an thin outline around objects. Checks at wheat point they intersect and adjust the speed vector accordingly.

I posted it ages ago on here, but it's essentially a metroidvania-ish game with a focus on killing giant monsters (with climbing ala DD or SotC) and decent combat. Right now, I'm currently starting up a smaller project to get myself familiarized with textboxes, so I'm working on what you see in the webm.

So far I've almost failed, and had to rewrite a few bits to make it readable.

The game takes place in a dungeon inside the sun, so a lot of things I want to look like they were left out in the sun too long.

goblin lore is the souls of those who fall in dungeon are trapped inside for eternity. by sacrificing their individuality they can combine with others to gain more power, their concept being a pathetic being that will give up everything for meager gains. Since theyre combining with eachother I tried to keep the amount of limbs/bones/fingers/eyes/toes etc to be consistent with the amount that would be combined.

I've done it. Hyperspace is fixed, and the scene manager is properly cleaning up one zone and activating the next. The message passing involved is somewhat clunky but it's still worlds better than what I was doing back in Demo Day 7.

New priorities:
- Bringing back AI ships
- Making them shoot each other
- Particle effects when things get shot or die
- Text rendering

I finally managed to simulate a creature with something resembling a real walkcycle.
The body itself is hand-designed this time, the algorithm has just learned to drive it sort of effectively.
The walking behaviour itself is completely reactive - every limb has contact and orientation sensors which feed into the control network. In effect, the creature has learned to activate appropriate muscles whenever its legs contact the ground.
Next up - directed walks and following.

There's no reason not to use Box2d. These commercial game oriented physics engines like physx and bullet aren't exactly bloated with many features you aren't going to use. They are very focused on doing exactly what you need for physics in a game. Also, they all work pretty much exactly the same way. Learn how one physics engine is used and you can very easily adapt to another one.

Having said that, writing basic physics code for say, a platformer, is very easy if you're interested in learning.

Pretty close to how I want it to look, at least from a shader/material perspective.

I think some of the environmental assets need a rework, it's mostly just unadorned concrete and it makes everything a bit too stark. A number of smallish details usually helps things blend in, since the eye draws it all together instead of looking at it as individual colors.

I think bearing in mind what I'm emulating visually it's really not that far off. At least not to my eyes. If anything, it's a bit too subdued.

Just not enough details yet.

So from what I can see, the ideas I prefer are:
- references to a sun (Dark Sun?)

I tried various things for the logo, such as all seeing eye as a sun over a world made of a 3D isometric cube / hexagon.
