It's a little hard to see since I don't know how to webm, but I got the following implemented today:

Variable jumping
Jump height powerup
Double jump powerup
Triple jump powerup
Dodge jump powerup
Enemies
Light impact

Dodge rolls only evade bullets, dodge jumps evade everything. The dodge jump powerup is gonna be hard to find but useful for when the bosses start to go bullet hell.

It's probably not possible to do that in ever situation, so it'd be more like a treat for the player, to see enemies fight sometimes.

You could also add factions, NPCs will not attack their own faction, but will attack other factions. This will also allow you to add allies if you wanted.

No, that's for light impact. Attacks that do one damage just kinda pop you back. Three of those in a row, like from a machine gun, and you get knocked on your back/face and can take additional damage on the ground.

You only get invincibility frames when taking 3 damage or more, dodging, and getting up from being knocked down.

and lots of things that you won't even think of. It's definitely not impossible, but it is not advised if this is your first or second game.
As a rule of thumb, if you can figure out the general steps in your head, you should be able to create it. If you're still on the fence, give it a try, but don't worry if you don't finish it, you'll learn more and you can always pick it up later

Every monster is chasing a target. If an attacker damages the monster, the attacker becomes its new target. If its current target dies, it resets to the default (the player).

If monster A accidentally damages monster B, then monster B will attack monster A, and monster A will then retaliate by attacking monster B, and they'll fight to the death. This behavior emerges from the rules above.

Placeholder backgrounds done! I couldn't find anything to my liking online, and my programmer needs to have three easily identifiable different frames he can make cycle through.

The eventual goal is to have three different layers of visuals cycling simultaneously and randomly to really create the illusion that you are moving through space. He thinks it'll be "fun and easy" to code, so I'm glad he's happy!

Coding is hrd. Insert draw commands to show a ton of debug shit, figure out exactly what parts are correct so that you can narrow down where the FIRST mistake is, because after the first mistake shit piles up and even correct parts look wrong. This is an incredibly important skill. Searching your code for issues beyond typos can be pointless -- you have preconceived notions of what it is doing, and the mistake may be something you failed to even think about in your design. Output the right information and determine what should be output to narrow down where the mistake is.

Don't rely on googling solutions, you're getting to the level of complexity where you NEED to be able to debug your own systems. Copying & pasting & modifying will no longer be sufficient, you pretty much only have an excuse to do that when jumping into a new library/framework to get a head-start on exactly how it's laid out.

After you DO get shit working, learn to divide up problems. In my opinion, this is the biggest development skill there is. When you can split up problems into parts that are so small you can be absolutely confident they work (and regression tests can be pretty much exhaustive with little effort), and chain them together to get your more complex functionality, things go smoothly. But this isn't always possible when you're so new to a particular problem that you don't know where the hell the boundaries should be. So this is a secondary goal to getting your initial implementation working.

What I would do is have a "SpawnHandler" data structure, which contains a Dictionary which maps a "Number of Frames Since the Game Started Started" int to a "SpawnEvent" object. Inside the "SpawnEvent" class, you would have an Enemy type variable (string or enum), and some other data about the enemy you want to spawn. It really makes no difference either way in the end. You could make a "map" and the y axis is either space or time, depending on your choice. In one case, every enemy/building/static-item/whatever has an x-position and a time-of-entry, and in the other case, they have an x position and a y-position where they do not spawn until their y-position enters the screen area.

So it's up to what you think is easier to work with, unless you come up with any unique gameplay elements that make spacial or temporal preferable.

I didn't say it was not legit. I use it. For surface modelling, base modelling, unwrapping, retopology, animation. Why? Because it's good for those things. But I do sculpting in zbrush, texturing in substance painter and designer, sometimes in 3d-coat, rendering in marmoset and keyshot. I use other, smaller tools as well. Why? Because those programs are better at those things then blender. Blender can do all of those things, but it's not perfect, there is simply no perfect 3d package. If you're making some simple indie lowpoly stuff, then sure, you can do everything in blender. But if you wanna git gud, why waste your time going out of your skin in one program, when you can use a whole toolset to make things good and quick?

I plugged my Wii back in to replay Paper Mario: TTYD, got a Mac OS 9 emulator to play Exile: Escape from the Pit (old RPG), more emulators for Advance Wars / SMRPG / Persona 4 / etc.

I'm not doing full playthroughs, just quick runs to remember how the game feels while I think about gameplay ideas. I really should check out FF Tactics though, thanks.

I think the main thing I've realised is I want to make each character's gameplay unique (and have it match their personality). Right now they're all too similar - just a bunch of melee dudes with a different spell each. Instead I want it so the platformer dude is nimble and jumps all over the battlefield, not-sailor-moon beats up baddies with combos, robo-dude can actually 'run and gun' (and never uses melee), etc.

Have both (mini game and waiting) like in Alien Isolation. It was a lot of fun, but really exhausting. It was the first time I've shown anything and my table looked really barren with just a couple laptops compared to all the other indie games there.

People really loved it, highlight was when some guy came up and said "Fucking finally, a shooter!"

Most feedback was stuff I already knew. I honestly think I got more constructive feedback from Demo Day 9, but that's to be expected with actual devs playing the game.

One thing I learned is that business cards or flyers are a must. If people actually like your game then nothing else matters, just give them something to take so they don't have to take photos of the pause screen to remember about it.

Hadn't seen your review before but is spot on.
Keep in mid this started as jam game so i did it in less than a week as a side project.
Since I received a lot of positive feedback and saw a lot of people interested on it I decided to make it my main project for a while and make it grow. As you said I had in mind adding different levels layout, some power ups, some small variations on the gameplay (amount of hunters, amount of villagers) and probably some bonus minigames, but I'll work on all that pretty slowly.
So far I changed the controls a little bit, and I'll start reworking the main mechanics soon (the way the night and day cycle work, and how each level difficulty works)

Something they even make a theater version of the game where you're totally confined. Like in Let's go Jungle! Or House of the dead 4 special.

As a long time agdg visitor, you gotta look for patterns. If they're shitposting about one thing over and over, it's probably because it's a low hanging fruit that's easy to attack because it's such a big flaw. I've seen a lot of people give the "use a scarf/cape/shirt+hat" critique, all in a row, and all just get another underwear repost without so much as a "I'll give it a shot."

It's that kind of thing that gets people to dislike a dev, which gets you more shitposting.

Your sprite art has a clean style, and if you put a little more effort into it you'll actually have an attractive product that will be able to not only appeal to a broader chunk of the furry market but a broader chunk of the market in general.

Right now you're pigeonholing yourself into one of the biggest niches, which is the openly furry porn niche, which will be pissed that your game isn't straight up porn.

The furries that are like "It's not just a sex thing!" will not only bash you for sexualizing (in their eyes) cubs, but for being part of the porn subset in general. Normies won't even play your game because the underwear thing lacks comedic absurdity since you're using heavily anthropomorphized characters with obvious gender keying.

People have been telling you these things from the start. If they're shitposting, it's because it's the only thing that gets a reaction out of you.

The problem for Japan is not that the population is declining in the first place. It's that their economy has a high demand for young consumers, and their population is falling way short of supply.

Also, it's the low population areas that are being (further) depopulated, not the cities where all the business is concentrated. There are hundreds of villages now where all the young people are just gone. There are train lines out in the sticks that are down to serving a SINGLE customer.

Factions are now in: allies and foes. Shared enemies and rogue ships are also supported.

You can also see the player (blue-grey ship) using two weapons at once: the regular peashooter and the bomb-like attack.

Stacking weapons will be the main way to keep up with the red side's ever-increasing firepower; allies will be an exceptional boon available through calling reinforcements or attacking an enemy ship with a lucky shot of the Point of View Gun.

Does this look too difficult? Simply not fun? Feedback would be welcome.

Currently APIs allow no PO2 textures but the real reason is PO2 textures are simple and fast to proccess because size, you don't have loss in the proccess.
