If it has gameplay, it's a game. Kind of like how if it has pages that you turn, it's a book. A visual novel is electronic, it's interactive, it has graphics and sounds and music and save/load mechanics, but it doesn't have gameplay. That's the whole reason the term "visual novel" exists: It isn't a game.

How do I draw?

It seems whenever I ask this question, one person shouts "loomis!", another shouts, "Loomis a shit!", and a third tells me to kill myself and the fourth just posts those infuriating pepe memes.

The main problem is I don't know where to start. It seems in order to draw, even the most cartoonish of things, you must have mastery of an innumerable amount of things.

Is this a good schedule? I was thinking of devoting perhaps two to four weeks per subject, then starting all over again until I git gud.

I hope for some actual helpful replies to this post, but I fear I may just be accused of being a cuck, a tumblr or whatever the dank boogieman is nowadays.

Pick related; the schedule.
>>
>>148873335
Not him, but some VN have small minigames trow in there to spice it up a little.
Reine des Fleurs has battle mechanics when you encounter some characters, but still counts as a VN, and Tomoyo After has a small turnbased dungeon crawler-like rpg minigame too. Iirc Clannad also had some sort of rythm game thing with Tomoyo kicking Sunohara, where you had to make long combos to get points.
Haven't played VA11-HALL-A so I don't know too much about it.

Interesting. I want to make a VN because I like the way they tell stories, but VNs as a whole bore me, so I want to spice it up with some kind of interactive element that would keep people like me interested. I've been thinking long and hard about what kind of gameplay would mesh well with the VN style of storytelling with the dialogue boxes and such, but I haven't been coming up with any good ideas.

orienting yourself is important, but trying to figure out a schedule before you get a feel for things is often a waste of time. you'll get nowhere without drawing a lot, and yeah, 60-70 hours (or less, you'll have to judge for yourself) should be enough to get accustomed to the basics and get a feel for where you are and where you want to go.

>It's perfectly possible to learn from anime before you're intermediate
I agree. But I also agree with the other guy that there are other things you should learn first. I think anime gives you insight on how you can distort and exaggerate anatomy to make characters and poses more expressive, but you should also learn some of those basics from life before you start changing them up. Some anime can also provide help with color theory, layout, etc. But drawing from life before tackling secondhand representations can help even more.

Like, economically important? Widely spoken in multiple countries? I guess that means Mandarin, Arabic, and Spanish, in that order. If you're posting here you already know English, of course.

Or maybe you're talking about cultural enrichment. In that case you should start with Ancient Greek. Have fun with that though.

In the sense of studying it with the goal to master the language (being able to converse freely - but not perfectly - with native speakers), not only to get some credits for school.
Saying stuff like "I'll study German after I'm done with Japanese" sounds laughably naive. Learning a language takes years of continious studying and even then you'll never really be done, which means you'll never move on to German.
Trust me, I studied Italian for 10 years and then went to uni in Italy and I still don't feel confident. I started learning English a bit later, and feel quite confident because of continuous exposure to it on the internet, but I'd never dare to say that I'm done learning. And if I'm sure of one thing, it's that I'll never take up another language. Learning languages is a pain in the ass.

Learning a language is fucking difficult, even more if you are taking just classes outside your main career/job/whatever and you aren't in a translation uni or something dedicated to it.
If you want to really understand, translate and write a different language it would took years, even more if it's a complicated one, like spanish, japanese, chinese or russian.
But you probably can get a really basic text comprehension in less time if that's what you want.

Sure, learn Japanese. I never meant to try to discourage you from that. I just wanted to explain that making a list of languages to learn is a stupid idea, because you'll never get to the second one on that list. So, if you want to learn Japanese, go for it. If you want to learn German, go for that. Just be clear on the fact that you won't be able to do both in a reasonable timeframe. Learning languages is a great thing (with a lot of benefits for the brain), but it takes a lot of effort and one language is probably the limit for an adult (unless you live in a foreign country and learn the language by osmosis or something lol).

yeah. i have a hardon for well told narratives.
preferrably it'd be a 3d 3rd person shooter for most of the game, hopping between planets and resolving subplots that lead up to the ayylmaos. the very end of the game would have the pilot that you played as get ripped out of the mech and killed by the surviving hybrid, and your mech getting up on its own and goring the fucker.
way too ambitious for a first, even early game, and i don't want to half ass it so it's on my 'when i git gud' backburner.
until then the more realistic stuff i have in mind is the XCOM ripoff with magical girls, some JRPGs to work on my writing, a beat-em-up where you use the primary colours to beat up monsters sucking colour out of the world, and fuck i'm blogging.

using game maker, in the targeter's code:
-create "closest_distance" variable at an absurdly high number, and "target" variable equal to keyword "noone"
-go through every instance of an object using "with obj_name { }"
-if (other.id == id), skip: that's "myself".
-if distance_do_point(x,y,other.x,other.y) < other.closest_distance, other.closest distance becomes distance_to_point and other.target becomes id.

you now have your closest, non-self target. rejoice!

What's the proper way to export animations from Maya to UE4.

This animation is supposed to have a pause at the top of the swing, and it does in Maya. When exported UE4 however, the pause is skipped.

some games did have separate variables for an accumulation of fractions for smoother movement (i think super mario world did it), but one example of a game that did the fixed variables stuff is m.c.kids, quote here:
>If the object has X Physics turned on, then the X Physics are computed using Acceleration, Velocity and Position. Object positions in the game are 16 bits significant and have a resolution of 1/4 pixel. This is our ‘decimal place’ and allows the objects to move smoothly at various speeds. This provides that Mario "feel". Some games force all monsters and the player to move at some integer multiple of pixels per vblank, and thus lose some of that fluid "feel".
it's a very straightforward method
either way, both of these examples prove that subpixel movement in retro games is not a completely abstract concept

>>
>>148907869
From wiki:
>Jumping spiders are generally diurnal, active hunters. Their well-developed internal hydraulic system extends their limbs by altering the pressure of body fluid (hemolymph) within them. This enables the spiders to jump without having large muscular legs like a grasshopper. Most jumping spiders can jump several times the length of their bodies. When a jumping spider is moving from place to place, and especially just before it jumps, it tethers a filament of silk (or 'dragline') to whatever it is standing on to protect itself if the jump should fail.

Right now I feel completely defeated. The game I've been working on for more than two years now, and suddenly it's unplayable and riddled with bugs.

Within the last week, I started to experience failure on my C: drive, so I got a new one and used the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10. I also took the opportunity to finally install a legitimate copy of GMS, because I've had a CD key for a while, but I've been too lazy to use it. Now the game is incredibly buggy, and I'm just tired trying to figure out where all the new issues are.

I use blender to animate and import to Unity so take my comment with those considerations in mind.

I would double check to make sure the keyframes you set up in Maya are all there and completely saved before exporting.

I would also check the import or export settings to see if there are any "Automatic Keyframe Optimization" type settings that may be turned on.

If you haven't yet, I would check the UE4 documentation on what it suggests you do when importing, and asking in the forums if anyone else has had keyframes "lost" when importing.

Procedural generation algorithm has just one seed, and they use LOV detail to stream in huge objects. So, things are created as you encounter them, not before. Since it has a single seed it's always the same thing.

Google seeds for procedural generation. You don't seem to understand seeds.

It will be exactly the same as the one you discovered, even though it's generated again.

All clients generate the same planet.
>>
>>148913451
it's not random it's procedural

the function y = x + 1 is completely repeatable and predictable for all x from negative to positive infinity, yet you only need to do a simple addition to find any y.

We start with a number, called the seed. To generate locations of the planets we use a pseudorandom number generator to generate a list of locations that are near the player. A pseudorandom number generator isn't truly random - given the seed number, it will always generate the same sequence of random numbers - however, there is no pattern to these numbers. Then, for each location, planet terrain is generated using a noise function using the seed and the pseudorandom number generator. Every client always generates the same universe because every client has the seed number from which the entire universe can be derived. For more information, check out these articles:

Algorithm for generating the same random numbers on every client:

>>148914021
Think of something that samples digits of Pi from a particular spot, say 100 places in. There's no pattern so it's effectively random, but if you start at the same place a second time you'll get the exact same results. In this case the starting position is called the "seed".

Procedurally generating a universe so it turns out the same way each time is a similar setup, In an extremely basic example the seed would be related to the position of the object or some other value. You're getting the same value lookup each time you find the same object so the result is always the same. Other objects have different results so they look different to each other, but they're just different reproducible results of the function.
