Enviroment slowly coming along, also FINALLY removed the teleportation system, you now actually "walk" and "run" by gripping the "grips" on the controllers.

Grip one and you move towards where you point that controller, vision get cut of alittle (MC is damaged, bad excuse to help with VR-Sickness).
Grip two and you move where you look quite fast, vision is cut of alot.

Its very neat until you forgot you hid a skeleton somewhere and it jumps out at you with its syringe.

Disappearance of Hatsune Miku has really fast lyrics, they still don't sound like gibberish.

Granted it's Japanese so the pronunciation is pretty trivial.

The average person couldn't, but Michael Jackson could sue for it.

Which is why even South Park has a disclaimer similar to that.

For a limited time you can hire me to give your progress posts positive comments. Even if your game looks terrible, has no art or is placeholders.

Some of my work/expected replies:
"Looks good, something I could see myself playing"
"That's cool, I'd love to see more"
"One of the more interesting games of agdg, good work."

If you want I can even add questions like "Engine?", "Tumblr?", "How long have you been working on this?" if you want to create a discussion.

Besides the other dev, who was as irresponsible as the artist (if not more), the only guy who didn't know was the secondary coder they hired.

Anyway, porn games make bank, people will pay anything for their fetishes. Especially furries. So if you've got a great artist and A) a niche community or B) a wide variety of content, sure, go ahead and rack up that $10,000whatever/month.

Just don't go on vacations with the money. People will figure out eventually.

Does anyone know what the state of this game is completion-wise? Last demo I remember had wicked rough fishing mecanics, and the one lewd animation situation in a room without a door.

It seems like most of these 'adult' games that catch a lot of traffic/attention just barely put out an update every month.

The patreon model is kinda weird to me, although the closest thing I can think to be a solution is if there was should be some kind of scaling for amount to donate vs. number of donors.

Almost like asking for a set threshold to maintain content output and when patrons sign up they do so with the willingness to donate up to an amount. But after the dollar threshold is hit, additional patrons supporting simply drives down the amount donated per patron by a fraction of (AskedTotalSupport / TotalSupportingPatrons). You would give the option to alter the threshold if the total number of supporting patrons was sufficiently high, with a two-three week notice, and capped at a percentage of the previous threshold.

I think that this model would better reflect the commitment expected by the Content Creator, while still allowing for access to support content.

It's not that hard. It's not hard to ignore idiots. Yesdevs post progress to share what they're working on.

as someone who dabbled with pre-studio gm more than they should've, i'll tell you that instances of objects are quite heavy and you should minimize the amount of instances whenever possible
particles are much lighter than objects as they have vastly simplified and unified behavior and no collisions to be handled - whenever possible, you should rely on particles for your visual effects

Made some progress in the back end with how the shop data is passed back and forth.

I have an issue now. I deployed to the phone and my control scheme doesn't really work. On PC its mouse to move and click to send the pulse wave. I don't know what a good mobile scheme is.
I was thinking dragging with a finger and if you are dragging, a tap sends the wave? Or a button? Or just drag for movement tap to shoot?

Speaking of Evangelion, what do you think of a game following the same sort of idea?

I don't mean a mech game necessarily. Just a normal game, with a plot about some big bad coming and you saving the world. Only the main character(s) suffer from their own internal conflicts/neurosis that eventually overtake/replace the main plot as the focus. Near the end of the game it becomes extremely abstract, abandons the main plot and focuses entirely on the characters' minds as they come to terms with who they are.

If you do it right, it'd be heralded as the greatest indie game of all time.

I think of Planescape: Torment, where the goal of the game is to kill yourself

999, where you're trying to escape from a strange evil death dungeon and the final act of the True Ending is learning who the villain is, what they want, and saving them through some cool metanarrative and diegetic gameplay devices
And Radiant Historia where again, the final act of the true ending is learning who the villain is, learning that his entire plan from the very beginning was all in order to save the main character from dying, and convincing him to kill himself to save the world

In addition to those other suggestions, try people-watching, and borrow the elements that you like. You don't even have to go outside sometimes: when I see an interesting picture of someone on the internet, I save those and reference them later on.

I've written a few LD games in Love; it's pretty great. I haven't run into any showstoppers yet. Fast as fuck to prototype and iterate with, and good enough for commercial games (google for a list). It embeds luajit so the performance is great too. Just keep in mind that GM has a lot of already-implemented stuff whereas if you were to use Love you'd have to implement the same things yourself (e.g. GM object model).

Should I take a C++ or C# class next semester, or both?
>>
>>148805270
Take C++. I assume if you're a CS student you'll be doing Java - C# is exactly the same (at least at the level you'd be taught), but with a few extra features.
>>
>>148805270

C / C++ for sure. Much more widely used, more universal, much lower level access, but similar features to C# as well. You can almost immediately pick up C# after knowing C++ or any other OO language, but you won't understand C or C++ coming from C# or java.

Not saying C# is a bad language, I mostly use it, but I also worked with C++ and it was able to pick up C# in a week.

I haven't made any progress in months. Feels shitty. :(

Is being a Yesdev or Nodev a permanent unlock? Like if you never started working on a game then you'll always be a Nodev, but once you've started working on a game you're permanently a Yesdev? Or do you have to be currently making progress to maintain that Yesdev rank? Which one am I?

Unity uses C# and it's the best 3D amateur game dev engine of all (and even 2D depending on the game)

you don't want to get a job in the game dev industry working on C++ engines

you don't want to waste your time making your own C++ engine (literally no successful/released/complete indie games do this - just enginedev prototypes)

you want to just like make game

learn C#

This is a classic sign of spending too much time in agdg. You actually think anyone knows which nodev you're implying is shitposting when in reality you just spend too much time here and sound like a schizophrenic.
>>
>>148809406

Allow me to explain.

People will probably reply that an anonymous board is the best place to get advice because it's "raw and honest", but the reality is that an anonymous board allows you to post shitty progress and get away with it.

Look at any devlog in tigsource for example. Even the lowest quality devlog surpasses by far the -best- progress in here.
The truth is, agdg is a containment thread for shitty games that only 4chan, reddit and 9gag users would un-ironically praise.

Thanks for listening.

Evening / morning all.

>Game localization & multi language

Started work on a game recently in which the gameplay is heavily focussed around words and the English language.

Its just occurred to me that any sort of localization to other languages would be nigh on impossible without essentially rebuilding the game from the ground up for each language, (as aspects of the game would be sensituve to sentence structures, words types and grammar etc.

Do I just abandon this project now?

Is there any point in committing a lot of time into a project which could never reach a wider audience than English language speakers, for gameplay reasons.

How do word games deal with this?

Reminds me of an old source mod. It was a team class based multiplayer game. One team ants, the other team termites. There were several classes for each, and I think each team had a queen, the objective to kill the enemy queen.

It was really cool, and it being about bugs made it pretty unique. I'd love to see a proper game with that sort of gameplay.
>>
>>148810631
If English is linked to the gameplay itself there's nothing that can be done.
You really shouldn't worry about this. Most of the games on Steam are still English only and you even have an excuse for that.
Just go with it.

>Why post here instead of non-anonymous places where you can check the background of the person giving you advice?
There is objectively no reason to post your game here unless you just want to fuck around and post your game for the sake of it. This is not a place for valuable feedback or advice, there is no audience here so it's not a place to promote. You should feel sincerely sad for most of the people who spend all their time here. They aren't exactly in the upper half of the class if you catch my drift.

What do you mean "know what happens inside"? You want to know how the physics engine works instead of just using it to make game? Then you should probably stick with engine dev because your autism has nothing to do with making a game with an engine.

The marketplace for C2 has a lot more than GM, but you can do quite a lot with the engine. GM is probably more robust in all aspects though.

I wouldn't say C2 is bad, it does what it does well.

Personally, I'm pretty fond of it.

Can be very quick to put ideas together and I find the visual scripting quite intuitive.

Imo the devs are woefully misselling it.

The "make gaems with no programming" marketing really overshadowed what is really quite a versatile & powerful 2D HTML5 visual scripting engine.

Just try out free versions of GM / C2 / Unity etc etc. Until you find something which works for you and will be suited to your project.

Are there any ways to render font fast? My current method made my game client cpu usage jump 15% (from 2 to 17), which is unreal. That's with about 100 strings rendered (with a drop shadow, so kinda rendered twice). Should I just generate a bitmap cache of the string and render that? Them scaling becomes an issue.

This is using Graphics on winforms c#.

C::B is an IDE and in itself it is very portable. Programs developed with C::B are only as portable as the compiler, build process and libraries used are. So it will probably work.
You can also test it every month on a livecd ubantoo then dip in black paint, get a wrench, go to nearest starbucks and check it on OSX back at home.

>>
>>148818596
>Graphics on winforms c#.
What in the world are you doing
>>

Scaling shouldn't become an issue unless you're constantly resizing the font, but even then maybe you could cache the string at multiple font sizes and re-use it as needed.
>>
>>148818596
Signed distance fields. It's kind of like a bitmap, but instead of storing the figure directly you store the distance to the figure at each point in an image. It has the same memory and performance footprint as a simple font atlas but it scales like a vector.

What do you think about time limit in your games Aggy? is it necessary? should it be avoided?
>>
There is probably an incredibly simple way to fix this, but I'm trying to set an array from a script to an array in an object in Game Maker. Right now, I currently have the object code looking something like this:

array_name = array_script()

Where the array_script() populates a temporary array (called array_temp), and then returns it. So, in code, it'd look something like

var array_temp;

array_temp[whatever,thefuck] = 0;
populate array_temp
return array_temp;

Yet, only the first value is currently being set. So, if array_temp had values from [0,0] - [0,3] that were 1, 2, 4, 3 respectively, only [0,0] would be set in array_name (1), while everything else is 0. Am I fucking up somewhere?

Hopefully that makes sense.

>why no game has kinetic or gravitational or even subatomic magic
I think writers either feel like they couldn't write these powers without them being too OP, or they don't understand them well enough to write them. For gravity, I can imagine writers thinking:
>oh, they just fly and make shit float around
or they go the distance and think
>might as well give them the power to create black holes
which would probably be a story-breaking power.
>>
>Is there a guide to getting started with music dev somewhere around? Like programs, where to get samples or sound packs or whatever they're called?

No idea, I just kind of jumped into it and started making the made up melodies that I would hum to myself. I'm sure all the stuff I make has all sorts of problems with it but making music has always been somewhat cathartic for me, yet I never actually try to formally learn music theory. I just draw stuff and make music based on how it makes me feel.
