a spell that SENDS YOUR WAND FLYING AND TURNS IT INTO A BURNING DEATH BOLT but you lose your wand

a spell that forces your enemy to SIT DOWN PERMANENTLY

a spell that INVERTS THE GRAVITY OF THE BLOOD OF THE ENEMY, causing him to FUCKING FAINT

a spell that TURNS THE SKIN OF YOUR ENEMY INTO SPECTACULAR PLASMA that cooks his body EVENLY

a spell that sends PROGRESSIVELY LESS COMFY PILLOWS flying at your enemy every time its cast, eventually sending REALLY DANGEROUS COUCH DECORATIONS at literal breakneck speeds

a spell that CAUSES THE VOCAL CORDS AND EAR DRUMS OF YOUR ENEMY TO CHANGE PLACES, making him deaf and mute and also suffocating him

a spell that OPENS THE MAIN MENU

a spell that BREAKS OPEN THE ENEMY'S BODY and forces his skeleton to GO ON WITHOUT HIM

a spell that OPENS A PORTAL TO THE DIMENSION JUST NEXT DOOR, where you can sidestep into a universe that is essentially the same and fight yourself

a spell that turns the ground into IMPOSSIBLY SLIPPERY ICE, which is so slippery it accelerates things to RELATIVISTIC SPEEDS

a spell that causes FUSION JAZZ to play in the head of the enemy permanently, disorienting him and DECREASING HIS MANA BY 50

How to use trello for games?
I want to use something that let's me write down ideas/tasks for my game while on my phone, and then be able to go deeper into them when I'm on my pc... what do you guys use?

I like to use a plugin for ToDo lists in sublime text (plain tasks I think) because I like the freedom of just sorting things out the way I like and adding any type of category at the front of a text like [engine] [quick] [version 0.1] and shit like that.

Also, do you guys use something special for bug reports? should I just try to use something like that for a "todo + ideas" thing?

I don't know if I will like trello in the long run.

a spell that explodes your wizard robes into fine threads that CAPTURE THE ENEMY but now you're naked

a spell that summons GUN

a spell that causes plants to grow REALLY FUCKING FAST, as in you can make grass under the enemy grow fast enough to PIERCE HIS BODY

a spell that creates a rune on the ground to which you can teleport FROM ANYWHERE

a spell that shocks the enemy with a KIND OF WEAK LIGHTNING BOLT, causing him to slip up and CAST THE WRONG SPELLS

# There was a big emphasis on reusability of the code in the original project,
# apparently, but this reusability took the form of inserting your deck of
# punch-cards at the appropriate position in somebody else's deck of punch-cards.
# (Actually, I think the card-decks were turned into tape libraries, and the modules
# were mixed-and-matched from the tape libraries, but the principle is the same.)
# So, indeed, the method of file-inclusion is a very fair representation of the
# methods used in the original development ... with the improvement, of course,
# that you no longer have to worry about dropping the card deck.

B) Multiplayer RTS (see thumbnail)
>>
>>148831301
When put in this situation, I start with the game element as set in stone. So, the number four. I then think of all classic combinations using the number four. The four elements. The four seasons. The four horsemen of the apocalypse. The four basic colors.

If that fails to yield anything appropriate, I do "research." As in, I type things into Google and see what comes up relating to the theme. So, we're in the mindscape? I immediately think, war between different kinds of thinking, like Logic versus Emotion. I also think, war between different emotions. Maybe you want to get technical and pick out actual sections of the brain for each faction, to give each faction some multi-faceted depth based on the function that part of the brain does. You could get even smaller and look up how thoughts work, or emotions, or whatever, take your pick, and name the factions based on the different parts that make up those. Or maybe you want to get sleep-based, pick out different kinds of waves.

If all else fails, just make it about the horsemen of the apocalypse invading the mindscape, and you have to defeat them all to save the person from going to Hell or something. Idk.

I'm a little bit skeptical about multiplayer only indie games. Of course, have some LAN or Internet, COOP or death match play modes, but having only these I don't think is a good thing. Of course it's fun and challenging to implement, but I'm not sure it worth the effort if you are doing it seriously.

If we are talking about local, split screen multiplayer, that's another thing.

So if you really want to force multiplayer, the question is, which one would you like to have?

In case of the RTS, the LAN/Internet option is better. For the side scroller a split screen (or one screen) option may be more fitting.

That's what actually bothered me the most about Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime: couch co-op only. Maybe they didn't want to deal with networking, or maybe it went against their "vision" of the game, but playing with friends that live far away would have been nice.

http://s-purple.tumblr.com/post/147484294391/breeding-seasons-cancelation-my-side-of-the

The short version: The project lead was kind of a lazy and overly emotional asshole and the main artist got tired of it, so he exploited a part of his contract that allowed him to slink away, gather up all the art he made, and used it to start another, incredibly similar project by himself in secret, which killed the original project since he was basically the only thing keeping it together.

Good advice all around. Thanks.
I actually tried this approach and, on the recommendation of another Anon, decided to try and make use of Plutchik's Wheel of Emotions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrasting_and_categorization_of_emotions#Plutchik.27s_wheel_of_emotions

Couldn't really make Surprise/Anticipation work so I came with the above.

The number of factions is set in stone but the theme and setting really aren't. I just need to go for something really abstract to match the limited art style I can afford. Aside from some sort of a mental realm the other clear option is cyberspace but I had even less luck coming up with a good thematic division there. Was extremely close to just going for the four elements in cyberpunk before realizing that's probably too stupid.

Malls maybe hasn't done to death.
Offices with samey corridors and rooms, serving as endless mazes.
I think basically everything can be scary. The main idea is to make it uncomfortable, unusual. You can do this, by simply removing one or two attributes of the given place. For example, what is the basic definition of any real life location? It's a place used by people to meet and gather, do business. So just simply do that: remove people. The reason why post apocalyptic flicks can make you feel uneasy is because you see these cities and huge buildings without any sign of life.
To simply put: just put your hero in an abandoned place. It doesn't have to be demolished or damaged. If it's in amazing shape yet there's no one around to take care of it, then it's just scarier.

syntax really isn't that important in the beginning, feel free to look it up. it'll stick with you after a while. focus more on being able to solve problems algorithmically, algorithmic/abstract thinking is an extremely useful skillset in general and vital in coding. bottom line is, would you rather know what you want the program to do and have to look up the syntax, or be fluent in the language but have no idea of where to start?
>>
>>148840318
True. I'm not sure I could actually manage to put one together though. Granted that I can look at sources from other engines to get a grasp on the structure of things.

>>
>>148840639
add non-TCG gameplay elements, turn based preferrably
see Duelyst for starters
>>
>>148840646
You can't. That's how colour blending works - it takes the white component of your sprite and shifts its hue. Since white doesn't have a hue, it doesn't do anything.

What sort of effect are you trying to achieve? If you want your sprite to be solid white you can use a trick with d3d fog:

d3d_set_fog(true, [color], 0, 1);
draw_sprite(whatever);
d3d_set_fog(false, 0,0,0);

If you want it to just by 50% white or something, maybe you could draw the sprite twice (once with the above fog thing @ 0.5 alpha).

Reposting because didn't get many replies last thread because posted so late.

I added berserk mode to the game. You fill berserk gauge by getting blood when full HP. Each "orb" gives 3 seconds of berserk time and once you press berserk button, it will use all full orbs. If you gain more berserk gauge during berserk mode, you can extend it by pressing berserk button again.

There's currently no bar to indicate how long it lasts, but I will add one. In berserk mode, PC ignores all knockback, attacks faster and dodge doesn't have recovery frames.

The current effect just adds afterimages (i think they are called that) and changes the palette (will have separate sprites later).

I'm also working on blocking, which currently does work, but there are still few issues with parrying.

I added double button dodge back, because I found single button option not working with the other mechanics and it just felt weird.

I simply set the Body.LinearVelocity to movement * Speed (movement being a Vector2 with values of -1, 0 or 1 depending on input), and then after that the physics engine handles the rest in the World.Step function.

numbers are obligatory for 'raw number' stats like damage. for reach/swing speed and other direct gameplay stats, describe them in text and add a small gameplay preview when you hover/select them? just the player sprite swinging the weapon and maybe an indicator.
>>148840864
skill-gated supermodes are awesome game design
that being said, imo blood orbs should automatically extend your current berserk timer, maybe even up to a cap, to make it good for fights with lots of enemies but not 'press x for god mode'.

the problem can be simplified to a single dimension and 3 states

You might wanna multiply the speed by deltaTime as well. It could fix it. But I doubt it.
>>
>>148840497
I guess that is true and probably better than knowing the all the syntax completely. I really hate using code academy because sometimes I know I wrote it out correctly but some small bullshit in the syntax throws it off and it returns with an error. I legit hate it when I find out it wasn't really my fault. Is there anything out there that's better? I don't care if it's not interactive like code academy.

if you're going to be pushing multiple movable objects often, you could add every movable object into an object group, that moves together and assimilates every movable object you come across.
>>148841592
that's a good idea but not what i was talking about
i mean changing how the duration works. if the player has full control over how long they stay in berserk mode/how much of the meter they spend, they can just toggle it on when there's a harder fight. it becomes more mundane because there isn't much thought involved.
on the other hand if you make it so the player can only activate berserk mode with full orbs, make it short when first activated and have kills prolong it, the player has to think about when they use it. if they use it on eg. a high health boss, it'll run out quickly and be a waste.

Yeah, I've tried that. But the odd thing is that it actually doesn't do anything at all. Of course I have to increase the speed value to compensate, but the movement is still dependent on frames. Makes me think that Farseer is doing something funky behind the scenes.

The World.Step does take a delta value though, so it should also be dependent on time and not frames, but it still doesn't work. Or maybe I am just thinking of this incorrectly.

I'm making a 2d dungeon crawler, using a struct for cells with a bitarray for attributes; whether the north wall exists, it has a treasure chest, etc. The problem is, I'm not really sure how to handle locked doors and keys.

I was using another bit to mark doors, then another for whether or not the key is found. When the player gets a key, it'd flip the related x/y cell's locked bit.

The real problem is key distribution; I'd ideally want keys to be looted near the door, but short of another bit for "has a key" and an O(n) check through the door list if whether or not its in a door radius, I'm not sure how to achieve it.

because fanwank tier trash means that it's badly written, not unoriginal.
SCP 835 is well written, but not very creative (mass of flesh that assimilates people)
SCP 2682 is both creative and well written
SCP 2718 is creative but badly written
my point is that the thing that makes an SCP good (suspense, narrative that weaves the medium well) doesn't necessarily translate into a good videogame. then again an SCP doesn't have to be great in its own context to translate over, so yeah my bad.

I don't mind at all!

The white flash is actually a bit of a parlor trick with GM:S.

If you enable d3d_fog, then draw the sprite, then disable it, it draws the sprite a solid color.

There's other more "proper" ways to achieve this, but the fog trick is the easiest in my opinion.

So I have a "pain" variable that sets to 5 whenever an enemy gets hit, and drops by 1 every frame until it hits 0.

Then the draw event looks something like

if pain>0{
d3d_set_fog(true,c_white,0,0);
draw_sprite(<sprite stuff);
d3d_set_fog(false,c_white,0,0);
}
else{
draw_sprite(sprite_stuff)}

The lighting is just fake "lighting" using a surface that is drawn blank, and then the game draws gradient spheres that go from black to transparent at each light, and then draws that surface of light spheres onto a full-screen shade of gray that represents the "ambient" light, and then that whole thing is drawn subtracted over the scene.

Just Google for Game Maker surface lighting, and you should find a bunch of tutorials.

unless your game has a _ton_ of special cases, its far better to code around them than switch to a broader, more complicated taxonomic system

you can probably improve performance by using nointerpolate in the shader instead of splitting vertices in the modeling app
>>

...how?
the point isn't that it's impossible, the point is that in order to not symbol draw anime you need to be good at drawing in the first place, and that you'll get that good much faster by not forcing yourself to draw anime (which easily lends itself to symbol drawing)

and the kind of artist that gets told to stop drawing anime is someone who's bad at drawing in general and it shows, and those people tend to gravitate towards anime because symbol drawing, while it looks like ass, is easier for a beginner to grasp than visualising and drawing the shapes that make up what you're trying to draw. in fact if you get good at symbol drawing, you'll have a mental list of things you can draw and will fumble when you try to get out of your comfort zone.
tl;dr don't draw anime before you know what you're doing for fuck's sake

Nah, it's not that kinda advice, I just don't have any experience with best design practices.

Basically, I'm making a 2D zelda-like, and I was wondering if it's worth it to program my own movement and such. I'm kinda obsessed with getting it feeling exactly like Zelda, so I'm foregoing a lot of Unity's built in physics in the process. But after banging my head against this prototype for about a month I'm starting to think it'd be easier just to use basic Unity2D movement and call it a day.

You can't be "the next Mozart", but you sure fucking can become a skilled composer if you're dedicated enough.
If you're well-off and sane enough to shitpost on 4chan, you've got no excuse.
Spend 1000 hours practicing a regular skill you want to learn, with the right resources, and you will learn it. There's no secret.

I would just make a special chunk in the map file and then store them as a list of vectors, and would do it in compile time assuming that they don't need to be changed , and i they need to be changed but not all of them path tracing does not become too big of a task

My maps are literally Quake 3 BSP files. At the moment, I load waypoints from a separate file in the same directory as the map file (I think Valve does it this way too). My current plan is to write the graph information right after waypoint locations are written.

I have no idea what that sentence is supposed to mean, but pretty much all games that aren't VRAM limited will load every texture required in advance. Ones that are will do complex asynchronous texture streaming algorithms, not simply "load as it spawns". Considering that your level is probably scripted, it's not hard to parse it and get a list of textures that need to be loaded.

your sprites aren't very readable. what is that supposed to be, a hot rod car with legs shooting laser beams? a walking fish holding a pulse rifle?
>>
>>148868447
Really juicy.
>>
>>148868447
You really need to make that explosion like a 1/100 chance.
>>
>>148868447
Those explosions look like a ripoff of that one juicy indie game
>>
>>148868447
Good work, though it's still kinda pointless to have like 1/3rd of your shots hit the floor halfway between you and your target.
>>
>>148868640
You need to be a bit more specific anon-kun.
>>
>>148868606
>>148868640
is juicy a euphemism for 'i jizzed graffixxx onto the screen and now readability is zero but it looks pretty'?
>>
>>148868763
Anon might be talking about Super Time Force Ultra. Not sure though.
>>
>wrist is starting to hurt
>it's probably carpel tunnel

who else has this problem?
>>
shiiet thx guys. i'll look into sprites some more

who even likes that kind of aesthetic other than normalfags

I contemplated buying a wrist-wrest from amazon, but I didn't feel like spending the money so I just stacked a few socks. Works well enough.

Thanks for the offer, I am still trying though.

Here is a webm after I applied a displacement modifier, I thought its quite funny or something.

My right wrist has been bothering me for some time now, not carpel tunnel though. Some sort of calcium deposit or deformation. Probably going to the doctor about it tomorrow.

never played it, i'm judging off visuals alone. and a stillframe of the the visuals looks like ass.
>>148869620
definitely, make sure you do it quickly, like your hands are wet and you don't have a towel. i do it whenever i'm using a pen for a while, relaxes the tendon right up.
>>
>>148869842
>>>/b/
>>
>>148869235

The explosions are pretty much all instantaneous and the remains of the enemies fade quickly, so it's usually not a problem, even if the screen is filled with tons of enemies.
>>
>>148870039
i'll give it a try if my toaster can run it

Alright but look at a reference walk cycle, look how the foot anticipated being grounded, then is flat grounded sliding back for a while before being brought back up

I can just see this being a really dank meme game if done right

just pick up an artfag from /ic/ porn threads and start making a porn game, you'll get showered in autismbux
>>148870681
that's what you get for not doing your pre-stretch stretches.
>>
>>148870385
I have. Used it for a few months and got up to 70 or 80 bucks per animation. Then I stopped making porn animations because it's not fun. I'd say it's worth it if you can stick to it.

Why are ds_grids so slow?
Checking 160000 positions in one step shouldn't freeze the game for a split second.

the check is probably more than one instruction, it also takes many cycles for an instruction

it doesn't scale that way, especially not if its single threaded
