Long and elaborate but a part of it is that Max makes scrapbooks and photo albums of all their trips and adventures.
The gist of it is after the storm they spend a few months with Max's parents (But go back to Arcadia Bay for Rachel's funeral) and then go back to the Bay. Max finishes school at Blackwell when it reopens and Chloe convinces Wells to give her a second chance. Their jobs are Max working at a camera store and Chloe working with Joyce. Once they finish school and save money they start their roadtrip adventure. They get to Paris when Max wins a big photography contest a few years later.

In reality she was just doing what she did best: starting drama and shit. She thinks Kate sees herself as superior to others (When she doesn't), sees Kate acting wild and films and exploits it. As if to say "Not so high and mighty now, are you?"
In the end she is the biggest reason that Kate ends up on the roof and regardless of how sorry she is, she has a lot of making up and soul-searching to do. Which by the end of the game she has already started.

Um, no. Did you just completely forget Jefferson and Nathan's involvement in that incident? And don't try and say that part didn't matter because Kate couldn't remember it. One of the main reasons she felt so hopeless was that she was sure Nathan had done something and he was apparently untouchable as far as the faculty and police were concerned.

Without Victoria the incident wouldn't have been publicized like it was. Nathan and Jefferson obviously harmed Kate and made her scared/ confused about what happened to her. But without the viral video then Kate would not have been bullied nearly as much or felt abandoned by everyone. People that were at the party would have talked about it; but her parents, aunt, priest, etc. wouldn't have seen it.
So yes, I do blame Victoria for a part of what happened.

I still think they played Jefferson just right in that scene between him and Kate in Episode 2.

Before Eps 4/5, it looked like he was being gruff, but was still trying to help her (his "drama queen" lines vs. the "you need to talk to me" lines). From the outsider it seems like he's being a bit of a dick in response to some teenage drama, but that he's otherwise trying to get her to further explain her problems to him.

After Eps 4/5, it's clear that he knows what her problems are/were, but that his goal was to try to run the line between looking reasonably like a teacher, and trying to get her to shut up about it (or plant the idea in the head of anyone listening that it *is* just silly teenage drama).

Similarly with his speech inside the classroom in the following scene. Prior to Eps 4/5 it sounds like a teacher trying to dissuade a group of teenagers from being needlessly mean to each other. After Eps 4/5, it's basically the same thing (the quicker all the drama ends, the better for him), but also with the aim of reducing the severity of any accusation Kate might make ("lol, it's just teenage drama).

From Kate's perspective, he's being a jerk who isn't taking her seriously. From the other student's perspective, he's treating it as any other highschool/teenage drama and showing his disapproval. From Jefferson's perspective, he wants it to all go away as quickly/quietly as possible, but he also doesn't want Kate to feel confident enough to reach other to anyone else (which basically worked; she even described herself as a drama queen).

I think they did all this quite well without playing him too "sweetly" or too "evily". The scene between him and Victoria in Ep3 goes on to reinforce the idea that he's probably not really a bad guy - his "bullying" of Kate was just him being a bit gruff.

Blame David, the one man who was investigating things and getting on the right track is dismissed and removed from the picture.
Blame Nathan, he's the most obvious choice and is set up to take the fall. But in the end just an accomplice and not the true culprit.
Blame Jefferson, the real criminal evades most of David's ability to watch him on school grounds and is free to act on his plans, since nobody really suspects him of anything more than negligence regarding a student.

There is no winning.

This is a point I've long whinged about.

The scene makes zero sense.

Not from a narrative perspective - all three parties had an obvious role to play in Kate's situation (even if they weren't all of the same severity) blaming only one is ridiculous.

Nor from a gameplay perspective - if the point was to highlight the three potential villains, (1) David was already pretty much off the list at this point, (2) Jefferson's only crime was being a bit of a jerk to Kate and seemed to actually try to diffuse the bullying in class, so there's no reason to think he's behind anything larger yet, and (3) EVERYTHING points to Nathan - the ordeal in the bathroom in Ep1, Kate literally says it was Nathan who took her to the bright room, etc.

Given that the choice of who you blame makes no significant differences in the future episodes, what was the point? It made no sense otherwise. Did they just feel like they needed a big end-of-episode choice? Did they just want to imply there would be bigger consequences (getting Nathan suspended/expelled, getting Max suspended, getting David fired, etc, all of which did nothing)?

I wish they had just done something a bit more interesting here. No player choice, but a more interesting scene where all three share an appropriate amount of blame. That way you can put a bit more thought into having the characters interact with each other in an interesting way - like the glances between Nathan/Jefferson.

Maybe, maybe not.

Jefferson probes Max to see how much Kate has told her - he knows there is a risk that she has given information about the night to other students. He can't know how many students this might be.

We know that Kate told Max about Nathan, and Nathan is THE link between Jefferson and all the Dark Room stuff. A dead Kate leads to an investigation, which inevitably leads to Max telling the police about what Kate said about Nathan (backed up by other people at the party seeing Kate leave with Nathan). Nathan's room probably gets searched (Chloe picture - which Chloe could testify for, burner phone with links to known drug dealer, etc?), and so on. Even if none of this leads to the Dark Room and/or Jefferson's involvement, having Nathan get investigated like this is extremely problematic for Jefferson. And this is all without the David Madsen wild card - we know he also has a bunch of information about a bunch of people involved, and he'd surely give this information to the police.

On the other hand, if nobody believes that any of Kate's stuff is of any importance, everything remains here-say, nobody bothers to properly investigate Nathan (except beyond a he-said/she-said type situation).

Kate's death escalates things a lot more than they probably would otherwise. Further, while Jefferson doesn't seem too worried about killing people if he *has* to, it also doesn't seem like he really *wants* anyone to die either. A minor point, but I can't imagine his ideal end goal is for Kate to end up dead.

I don't think it's so much an issue of "letting it all hang out" so much as it is an issue of "he was a cool character before, it's a shame to see him end up like a bit of a cartoon character". It would have been nicer if he was played a bit more subtly in the Dark Room - you can do "let it all hang out" without necessarily having him go loopy.

I understand that. Jefferson taking off a mask and displaying all his villainous traits and intentions to someone he believes is soon to be dead. But that stuff should be hinted at somewhere, and with Jefferson it is not. He's a very calm man for 4/5ths of the game and then in the final part he suddenly reveals he's batshit insane with no prior evidence. It doesn't appear threatening, it just appears silly.

If you're familiar with him, Light Yagami was a good example of what you're proposing. He was crazy but he hid it. For the most part. There were times where he let his disturbed side show because he got too angry or pressured, but in the end when he thought he was taking the victory he let it all out. That was scary because the viewer knew that aspect of him existed and now it's fully revealed to all.

The very first scene that it's revealed jefferson is the bad guy I literally let out a "WAAAT" it was so out of place. I though max was just high and hallucinating. Really the only thing that points toward him in the earlier episodes is when he's talking about framing the students in a dark corner in a moment of desperation. Outside of that, the whole twist and subsequent character change is a total u fuckin wot m8 moment.

I wasn't surprised too much. Once I saw the whole professional photo setup in the Dark Room and equipment similar to what the school used (I believe Max even comments on this), I had an idea that Jefferson was involved. A student wouldn't be able to just take stuff from the classroom and Nathan would never have created such an elaborate setup.

I like the idea of keeping him a bit more "normal" in the Dark Room. It's not just that he's an obvious lunatic, it's that he's seems to otherwise be a somewhat normal person who is doing horrible things, driven by the passion he has for his "art".

Especially given that he's somebody who Max looks up to and wants to be like someday. It's easy, following Episode 5, for Max to just be like "well he was just proper insane, I'll never go like that". It's another thing entirely if they're much more similar, and are both simply driven by their artistic passions.

Of course, it's still a massive stretch to try to go the route of "Max might turn out like this", so this probably isn't a useful route to go in critiquing Ep5 Jefferson. But I still think it would be better if Max/Jefferson could better relate while trapped in the Dark Room together, rather than it just being "Jefferson is insane!"

I could have seen it working, if they had pushed Max's photography a bit more on the "she'll do anything for the shot" direction. Otherwise she would have photos of things that never happened. Max's power has some level of awareness and prevents images of undone events from being preserved, as well as keeping Max from death since time freezes when she's in mortal danger and allows her to rewind.

I've seen a few Let's Players who have interpreted all the equipment in the Dark Room as "there must be other people involved, this is too much for just one person!" But I don't think I've seen anyone make the leap specifically to Jefferson.

Otherwise, I think your analysis is spot on. We're told numerous times through the game that the Prescott's are simply loaded and willing to spend a lot on Nathan; and we're told numerous times that Nathan is really into photography. There's no good reason to assume that Jefferson might be involved based simply on the equipment in the Dark Room.

I think you could argue either way on this, it's not really clear how it all works (though I'm also on the side of "the time travel rules work backwards to try to keep some internal consistency when timelines are changed" - my favourite example being when you rewind after eating food, to see the same plate of food being brought to you half-eaten).

But the general idea still works. Max doesn't have to rewind to keep those photographs, she just has to be able to rewind to make sure the full sequence of events can be done safely. She can snap a picture of Chloe with the train, then run off to solve the train-stopping puzzle. If she fails at any of the later stuff, she can rewind back to after she took the photo, and keep working at saving Chloe.

The added bonus here is that Chloe might be pissed at Max for endanger her. But at this point, she knows about Max's powers ... so it COULD perhaps be forgivable? This is the same Chloe who held a gun to Max's face, so who is she to complain?

Otherwise, yeah, I agree about the Kate picture especially. It would be a little cheesy to see her take a pic given that moments earlier (when she entered the courtyard) she had seen her jump. Still, I could see them mayyyybe being able to justify it when she first got up to the room - snap a picture before time unfroze again? Probs too far, given she was already straining to keep time still.

I like the idea overall, it's just trying to find a good way to implement it that doesn't make Max look TOO insane/evil.

It's not even clear that the Chloe photo WAS supposed to be artistic, it might have just been a quick snapshot for fun.

We've seen other examples of Nathan's work, and Max says it's really good. The style mimics what we saw in the Dark Room. Aside from Nathan being in some of the pictures (which plenty of people just assumed meant he used a tripod), there's no reason to assume that someone else was taking the pictures.

It should probably be a poll to take stock of how many people thought that Jefferson was the mastermind, an accomplice, or not involved at all.

Same for other characters because during the game's run there were theories about Sean Prescott, Wells, Frank, Stella, and others being involved.

It wouldn't work very well here, we knew Jefferson was the mastermind fairly early on due to various leaks. We were openly discussing it well in advance of Episode 4. Wait, what? Who's arguing that? I never said anything about taking pictures of anyone while dying, nor even when wounded. The two examples I mentioned were Chloe on the train tracks with the train in the distance - with the expressed assumption that Max KNEW she could rewind at any point; and an image of Kate standing up on the roof while time was paused (ie. before she was even falling). I'll grant you that they're still pretty morbid - especially the latter as Max doesn't have full control over her powers during that scene - but they're not situations in which Max is responsible for anything that is happening, she's reacting to things, not causing them herself. I even agreed that Max's actually photographing these scenes would be a bit too far, but I still don't see anything wrong with her thinking that they *would* have made excellent, emotive, dynamic, [buzzwords] photographs.

To be honest, I'd prefer this to be the case. Given that the "canon" explanation for the storm doesn't really make any sense, it would be kinda nice to know that we had a false ending, and that there's a deeper, more interesting story going on behind the scenes.

We actually don't know whether she took the video. All we have as far as her "spreading" it is the link on the mirror... which we can erase and at which point her video was already all over school. And in the dormyard for example, she simply ignores her.

Nathan presumably drugged her on the party. He is mainly to blame for everything that happens to Kate. There's even strong reason to believe he initiated her abduction without Jefferson's involvement. Victoria - as Max even states herself - is represenative of what harm jumping ignorantly to assumptions and going with the general crowd can do to a person. She's not painted as the person that drove Kate onto the roof, it's more a sense of "all of Blackwell should have cared more and really thought about what they were doing" - Victoria being the characterization of that notion, later obviously realizing how wrong she was and hating herself for it.

I see what you are trying to argue, and I agree that drawing a closer connection between Jefferson's obsession with art and Max having idolized him, and exploring that connection in the DR/Nightmare, would have made for a good narrative theme - having Max realize she is not at all like him. But I do think that specific "always take the shot" moment is taking it too far. Like, if Max actually thought a photo of her loved friend in death terror and confusion as to why the fuck Max would take the photo would make for a "good shot", in my mind she already very much is in Jefferson territory, and a remark like that would then actually make me worried about a future where she could turn Jefferson-mode to a degree after her success is over/illusions of the art world corrupted/whatever.

I agree. I love Chloe and that's why I felt saddened when I saw her with the gun, she was not mature enough for it. Shown with how she points it at Max after Max is already scared from seeing Nathan pull a gun.

Chloe likes the appeal of it: the power and sexiness of it. Something she sees as the ultimate "Nobody can hurt me now". She takes it for her own defense (Against Nathan and others) which is understandable, but she does it in an incredibly stupid way since she steals it.
It's another impulsive move by Chloe where she does something very serious without even considering the consequences.
Not just safety wise, but also how she stole it and that can land her in deep shit if it's reported/found, or what happens if she pulls it and someone steals it/ pulls their own to use against her.

It shows how childish her thought process was and how little she trusts David in that time. That she knows he works at Blackwell and could take some action, but doesn't tell him a thing. It also shows how much David is willing to slide for Chloe, another coverup or ignoring of crimes to keep her out of official trouble with the police.

I kind of love her too. But it's not beating up if it's true. That was just a terrible thing she did. But she obviously did not have evil intentions. As you said, she was kind of naive and childish, treating it as nothing serious. And later she was justifiably scared and looking to defend herself (remember our last conversation though: she stole the gun before the Nathan confrontation, before she had any understandable reason to want a gun). She is definitely to blame, and even with my love for Chloe I would be troubled not to report her to authorities if she shot someone.

Luckily, as you also say, we never let her do those things. We don't let her become a killer. She doesn't shoot Frank, Nathan or Jefferson, and the stolen gun doesn't kill anyone either. She's young, does something stupid, but nothing terrible happens and she gets away with that one. Stealing guns and playing around with them is a bit hefty of a youth sin, and the game unfortunately never really does make a point of having Chloe realize just how fucking stupid she was being, but eh. I can forgive her.

I've already concluded that the three of them would all be great friends that may be different, but get along very well. Kate knowing that Max wouldn't be friends with a bad person, and Chloe knowing that Kate's not a threat. Although Max may have some initial apprehension about telling Kate that she's dating Chloe, even though I highly doubt Kate would have any objections or problems.

I never really thought about how Kate would fit into it, but I agree there's no reason to assume they wouldn't get along. While Chloe and Kate are very different types and personalities, they are not stubborn, pity or narrow-minded either. They'd get along perfectly well, for the most part anyway. Especially with Max there. And as opposed to Max, Kate is actually pretty helpless at times and could benefit from Chloe's badass mentality and actual bodyguarding.

Chloe could help Kate deal with some of her issues like her overbearing mother and aunt by teller her to stand up for herself. Chloe would be a balancing influence for Kate, her whole life she's hard the same things and now there's Chloe to help her see why sometimes that way doesn't work.
Kind of Chloe being like a big sister to Kate since all of Kate's sisters are younger. Plus her bodyguard, as you said. Whenever someone stupidly makes fun of Kate for what she went through, they have to deal with Chloe.

I just finished playing this game but anons, Max was straight in my playthrough, hooked up with Warren and sacrificed Chloe for the bay. Chloe was abused, by David who did nothing wrong, and abused Max resulting in the sacrifice. Max going with Warren also resulted in Kate being a slut and Max isn't lesbian, she is bisexual and was just experimenting with Chloe. All this proves that Mari was right and thus why is this general still alive?

Also, Bay is obviously the better ending since everyone died if you can't tell from the events I mentioned. Tom Gould's comic's, all wounds and LiS SFM porn are the canon continuations of the game.
