And I'm skeptical how much "realism" the otherwise very stylistic rendering could have still looked like an aesthetic whole with (clothes are not simulated either, for example). You got a point. I mean... I let myself enjoy it for what it was, mainly because I was able to emphathize with the characters so much, but I completely agree. The stuff in front of me was pulling on my feels so I didn't pay super close attention, but I completely agree.

Definitely plot holes. Also, The town doesn't seem that big, had Max just giving warnings to her friends it would've been so much easier for me to just let the town go. I mean... you know about 4-6 decent people in the town. (Video-game morality)

It's pretty simple for me: As a player, why would I willingly sacrifice the one thing the game has made me care about the most? And Max, how I understood her, would not give up. Sacrificing Chloe feels like giving up on everything. On the lessons she's learned throughout the week, the experiences she's shared, shit she's fought through, decisions she's made, the person she was and helped others become. And giving up a loved one just after the full realization of loving them has hit her. Surrendering them to an unjust, brutal and lonely death.

When I envision Max ripping the polaroid apart, saying "Not anymore.", and Max turning her back to Chloe and staring teary-eyed into the butterfly photo, I get a distinct sense which of the two feels like a more fitting conclusion to me. Both for the story and the characters.

Same. Not that I perceive Sacrifice AB as a great conclusion either, but that one moment at least has echoes of the decisive gut punch I was hoping for.

Max is a fighter. There's no way she would just suddenly give up, even after everything, and it's shitty writing to force a scenario where that's presented as a justifiable - even 'moral' - choice despite there being no evidence it should even work.

Wonderfully put. The biggest point between the two in the game is that they've both made mistakes over the years, but they will not repeat them and abandon each other. As much as I wish we learned what happened to the side characters and after the storm, the story of Max and Chloe that week ends there on the cliff. From that point on it's a new story about their future together. The story we've written with all the posts, fics, hadcanons, etc.
