If invasions are also based on weapon upgrades, and the system automatically uses the highest leveled one you have in your game, what happens if i drop a +10 weapon for someone at the beginning and they pick it up? Are they going to be invaded by people much stronger than them and will they be unable to invade anybody at their level?
>>
>>148196051
You can't see weapons that are higher than the highest upgraded weapon you have

Boss review and discussion time. I'm going to be going through all of them and sharing my thoughts, whether you fucks like it or not. No faggy rating system, just listing what I like and dislike. Feel free to reply with anything you think I overlooked or debate points.

> Iudex Gundyr
As the very first boss in the game Iudex needed to make a good first impression. His design is intimidating and ornate, his arena simple and beautiful. Even keeps mood candles lit.

- First knock is the GS you activate the fight with. There's this gory, weighty animation of the player yanking it out - then the sword suddenly vanishes awkwardly into thin air. This was a wasted opportunity to let the player simply wield the weapon. The "Ashen Firelink GS", a shitty version of FL GS without the stat requirements and flame spouting weapon art. From shows us later that they clearly don't give a shit about handing out useless GS's for boss fights, and trivializing the very first boss in the game isn't nearly as bad.

Doing this gives poorer starting classes a leg up and teaches players about the second stage fire weakness far better than unceremoniously dumping a bunch of firebombs in a corner.
However the main reason I like this idea is the Soul of Cinder FL GS. It would feel extremely satisfying to receive the powered up version of a cool early weapon you weren't allowed to keep, giving players a keen sense of progression from the very first boss to the very last.

-Second issue is the aesthetics of the second stage. Here begins the long running theme of the enemies who say REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Constant screaming has always been more aggravating than scary, and the design itself looks like a top heavy sock puppet.

Overall good first boss that teaches new players about circle strafing, second stage, parries and damage type weakness.

>Vordt of the Boreal Valley
Inoffensive and forgettable.
Vordt teaches the player that avoiding attacks is usually better than tanking them, especially with the new frostbite mechanic. A lot of taint slapping, as well as smacking the shit out of bosses when they do a breathe attack.

Arctic man-bear-pig serves as a great lore dump for Irithyl and the Pontiff's mischief, setting up a huge part of the story and giving something for the player to look forward too. Arena is about as boring as the boss, the most exciting thing is wondering what's behind the massive door.

Almost disappointingly easy, but it's still early game. Maybe should've learned how to do a few belly flops.

It strikes me as odd that they chose 30-32 as the strength breakpoint for equipping greatshields, yet there's no weapon in the game which is better 1H and benefits from 30+ strength without being a full-on 40/40 quality weapon.

So despite being strength-gated shields, they only really over any synergy with quality builds and not strength builds.

>Curse-Rotted Greatwood
One of the most disliked bosses in the game and the herald of "attack weak points for massive damage!", a mechanic which we'll unfortunately be seeing far too much of. The decision to lock soul transfusion behind a fight as lame is this is baffling yet not as bizarre as some other choices they made with him.

- Defeating this boss forces the player to join the Mound Makers covenant much later in the game. Defeating the boss and tonguing Rosaria before completing Sirris quest line cancels out the covenant until you NG+. What this has to do with the fight is that there's absolutely no warning, the player survives a huge fall (without taking damage) while poor Hodrick is pancaked. A victim of the pointless and arbitrary decision to ensure that a blind playthrough will never get to experience the joy of being an absolute mad man.

- Infinitely respawning mobs. More challenging than the boss itself. Any fight that can be difficult with respawning mobs could be just as difficult while less annoying by making the actual boss harder. Fucking peasants.

- Greatwood uses his flailing arm penis to give a fat middle finger to Sorcerer characters, as if the game needed more of that. You can't lock onto the pustules, so if you planned on using soul arrows for anything good luck. Swapping to something else and R1 spamming is probably a feeling early game spell casters will be getting used to.

The design of the tree itself is just gross. Can't help but feel that popping a nest of crotch zits could be replaced with literally anything else and be better. The arm it sprouts is neat, I'd say that incorporating more vulnerable fleshy human body parts into the tree would help make it scarier while simultaneously less disgusting. The first stage of the arena is very pretty and the worshiping hollows that you can remove before the fight is a nice touch. Too bad the boss ruins the arena with his STD riddled ass, just like he ruins his fight.

Not really
Pretty much every class implies some level of weapons knowledge and training aside from Sorcerer, Cleric and Deprived, and that's independent of the fact that the player character knows how to do shit like the breakdancing moves as soon as they get their hands on the Farron Greatsword, or know how to draw out the fire of the Gargoyle Spear/Hammer as soon as they get their hands on one

I dont really have the means to test it. I have the pontiff rings but not the stats to wield the shield and its fire infused. I tried it out on some of the demons in the ruins and the numbers were increasing per hit. I don't know if the WA already does that automatically though.

Logan like a true celebrity got more famous after leaking his nudes. Not sure where the bird mask comes in, but plague doctors are pretty cool. Oh, almost every other weapon clips through it? Nevermind.

A magical bullet hell boss, with a dull but well designed arena that offers well placed respite from the constant barrage of magic missile.
Another fight that gets picked on for being too easy, though the gimmick is about as well done as it gets. Which still isn't saying much.

A missed opportunity here is the chance for some dialogue. If we discount Oceiros and his insane rambling, Prince Lothric is really the only boss that directly verbally addresses the player and what the player is. We know the Sage's are human, and discover later that one actually managed to get laid. Some lore about the Undead Legion or the Cathedral would've fit in really well, or at least be better than "OOOOAUGUAUGH!" every 5 seconds.

From what I understand of swordsmanship it's not only unintended to ever use these weapons with two hands, it's actively detrimental because you don't get a ton more killing power out of two arms and you do get less effective reach.

It'd be better for two handed swords to be pointed outward while the player is locked on, and resting on the shoulder when unlocked. Great Farron Dart is probably the single best spell in the game. Any spellcaster instantly becomes more viable if they can shoot out 100+ damage darts. They have a pool of good spells but it really just comes down to having blue throwing knives that deal 150 damage a pop are incredibly powerful.

Some of the greathammers you could just hold like a regular warhammer with one hand up near the head and another at the base of the haft, but I don't think there'd be any technique to using a great club other than swinging it like a baseball bat with reckless abandon.

No. It wouldn't be 20 pounds, but it would be too heavy.

Astora greatsword would be horrifically balanced in real life. It's too rigid, too heavy, still too thick. Swinging it like a DaS1 zweihander would be about the only way to use it, with the weight dragging off the ground.

>>148206104

Zweihanders were real weapons, but they were more greatsword sized rather than UGS. The doppelsoldners of the Landsknecht used them; I don't think it's concretely known how they were used, but the common theory is they would use them to hack the tips off of enemy pikes to allow their own pikemen to close in. I've also read somewhere that they might've had use as defense tools for bodyguards because in unarmored fighting you could control a lot of space with one, potentially against multiple opponents. In armored combat you'd mostly half-sword and I don't think there was really too much advantage to having one there.

There were also things like this called bearing swords, but they were entirely ceremonial. Claymore-size is about as big as real swords ever got.

And about as big as they ever needed to get. For instance, real lucernes or bec-de-corbins (or in English, crow's beaks) had smaller heads than they do in Souls games, because that's all you needed to kill with, and a heavier head meant you had to put more effort into swinging it, which made you tire quicker and potentially die sooner. So something like Smough's is just complete overkill; not only is it impossibly heavy, you could kill someone just as dead with a head 1/100th of the size.
>>
Speaking of realistic weapons, how realistic would the drang twin spears and hammers be? Twin spears is some anime fate shit and I don't even think I've seen a depiction of dual maces until now.
>>
>>148206841

>>148206845
Twin weapons are a real thing but not commonly used, plus the PC unsurprisingly wields them like an idiot for REASONS
>>
>>148206845
the hammers seem a bit heavy, but as far as realism they're both pretty believable

going into the issues that come with dual wielding in real life is a whole different story though

having 2 spears wouldn't really help you all that much and would more than likely just throw off your balance. two heavy hammers would simply not be able to take advantage of being dual wielded since it would be very hard to parry and counter with them and you're not going to be doing sick spin combos in actual battle
>>
>>148205592
>Abyss Watchers
The run up to this boss sets the mood perfectly, foreshadowing "enemies helping me kill other enemies" right before the actual fight. You hear loud clashing from other side of the door, the sound of constant dueling - eternal combat. Then you open the door and realize that they all decided to stop fighting and lie down so one of them could stand back up extremely slowly and gesture at you. You think this is goofy until the song kicks in and he rushes you.

The third easiest Lord of Cinder, mostly because all the ebin flips in the world can't save them from no poise. A wide open arena is nice and serviceable, especially with all the dashing.
The second stage offers the first "1v1 big guy with a big weapon" since Iudex, which is extremely refreshing after the previous mob choked shit shows.

Despite being in the shields are for no skill scrubs club no one taught them how to parry. Comboing a parry into a low damage space creating kick would've been a good way to shut down R1 spam while not being too brutal. It also makes sense, as Pinhead has a lot of dashes to choose from for a follow up.

Then you get the sword for yourself, and swallow disappointment when you realize sick grinds don't replace good damage and small parry windows. Fun to use though.

A real landsknecht was a kind of breakup fighter that was used to wade into the melee that happened when two pikemen units crashed together. The (in comparison) huge sword gave the guy huge range, which makes fighting against pretty much everyone but a cohesive pikemen unit much easier. It was often held up in the area of the blade that is blunt, this area was often also wrapped in leather to make this easier.

Other stuff I heard but can't confirm is the armor piercing potential of the huge sword being swung at people. Fact of the matter is, the weight wasn't ever an advantage to take seriously. The range is. If you can swing and hit the other guy but he can't, you're well in the safe zone.

A lot of Souls weapons, especially the smaller ones and polearms, were very real weapons, but there's also some that are surprising in having real inspirations.

Here's a crescent axe, for example.

>>148206845

Realistic dual wielding is generally rapier-dagger (the latter being the basis of the parrying dagger) or rapier-rapier. There's also a historical basis for Onikiri-style use of a katana and a wakizashi/tanto at the same time. So far as I know nothing else saw anything approaching common use.

Well, technically sword/shield counts I guess.
>>
>>148190352
She's fucking ugly toο, ever seen her face?
>>
>>148206845
The drang spears are well designed and used poorly.
The left drang spear has a guard for parrying and is shorter to help with deflecting. It has a thin head for piercing. You slash with it.
The right drang spear has a broad head for slashing. You exclusively thrust with it. It has a guard / stop for two-handing and pulling the spear out if it's stuck.

You wouldn't use them ambidextrously, you'd use the left in the manner of a staff, to protect your left side, or to hook around an opponent's shield.
You'd be better off with a real shield though.

Paired maces are a bad idea. Maces are short and not suited to defense, being all about aggressively pushing forward and breaking your enemy.
They are best used one-handed so it's not completely retarded.
Maces are absolutely a weapon you should pair with a shield to help you get inside your enemy's range, usually using your shield to lock / bash your enemy helpless.
Sure, if you could get an opportunity to swing both into an enemy you'd destroy them, but you'd have to outskill and outspace him, much like in the game.

Probably the only people to ever use twin axes were berserkers high on psychedelics or whatever shit it was they ingested.

Axes were good in some contexts, for instance in naval action, but I think generally for war you would always want a better tool for whatever job you were performing.

First, absolutely none of the axes in any Souls game even remotely approach real life axes.
Without exception every single one of their heads is FAR too thick and large. The Dark Souls battle axe is an extremely ridiculous example of this with a head so broad you could fan yourself with it.
Even the hand axe is more like a bastardized firewood splitting axe than a combat axe, and it's the smallest, thinnest one.

The pictured image is what a combat axe (bearded axe) should look like.

Second, the design of the winged knight axes brings to mind a guillotine. It is a very heavy wedge for severing necks. If you had the strength, it would work for that purpose.
Beyond that, no. The huge heads and thick blades are useless and would be hindrances even if you were superhuman.

Third, axes just aren't good in combat in general. They have limited ways to attack and if you're not dead on with your angle, you're getting deflected.
They are "good" at breaking shields, provided the shield is wooden, already damaged, you have the opportunity to pull it out, you're hitting it against the grain, luck is on your side, etc.
They're completely ineffective against armor unless they have a spike like >>148208151 but devastating against flesh. There's a reason axes were mostly popular for vikings raiders preying upon peasants and whatnot.

True, and the rapiers they do have in the game seem more like sidesword length. At least there's Ricard's?

>>148208225

None, simply because all of them are flintlocks and thus should have to be reloaded by the muzzle after each shot.

My fan theory about this, though, is that BB firearms reload quickly because quicksilver is just hunter blood. We know from Maria that it's possible to use a hunter's blood to spark flame, so all we have to assume is that congealed blood forms the "bullet" and then part of it is lit by the flint, exploding and propelling the rest out the barrel of the gun. With that in mind, reloading would be as easy as oozing some more blood into the gun by whatever method.

Not true actually. Large-caliber low-velocity cannons can be wielded, it's just that most of the time, for a soldier on the march, this is very impractical for lugging around and would make much more sense mounted on a carriage.

Most hunter firearms seem to be break action (all workshop and church firearms) with flintlocks on them, so they could probably be reloaded quickly. Actually the guns did have reloads at one point early in development (seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx8KTIeSnzs )
and I honestly can't figure out why they removed them because it took all of the risk out of parrying enemies and made it more of a resource management thing.

>Old Demon King
I like this fight, to the point that I wish it wasn't optional or at least held more significance. Too much DS1 pandering is a fairly valid critique for DS3, but I think Old Demon King was one of the best ways they did it. You kill a lot of demons in DS1. Potentially the same fat ass on three separate occasions. Then you walk into this chamber and see their corpses piled high, their last vestige rising in a final attempt to ruin something before the lights go out.

It was pitiable. I felt bad, as it was not only nostalgic but also symbolic of the ending of an era. We're now left with ash amalgam Gwyn, original character Bleath, and poor Nito doesn't even warrant a spooky mention. This boss essentially just gets a huge plus for making me feel bad about dead demons.

The fight itself is fine, ODK has a pretty versatile moveset - I like the ball of fire that bats people away from his groin. His long cast magic attacks are interesting, both offering free hits in exchange for a game of jump rope or seeing if you have enough stamina left to avoid the meteor shower. My favorite attack however is the suicide bomb. A perfect final fuck you from the Demons, 2 dogs out of 2. You have the chance to kill him before it goes off, the chance to run, or the chance to eat it and survive. You also have the chance to get absolutely blasted at the very end of the fight and have to start all over again. Don't be mad if you died to this. The walk back is short, and a move like this can only get you once. And it's funny. If you don't think it's funny, put down your sign at lower levels and watch people die to it. Eventually you'll fucking laugh.

You'll see the greed in their eyes, taste their anguish and wrath. What the fuck are demons for, if not for punishing the deadly sins?

Just lifting that fucking thing one-handed like the hunter does seems completely bloody unfeasible. It's about the size of the oxygen tanks I use for my medical shit, and that weighs 20 kg.
>>
>>148207886

Dual-wielding something as heavy and cumbersome (if used one-handed especially) as a European battle axe wouldn't have been common. Axes and axe-like weapons were used a lot more in early history, before armor became more sophisticated. Maces were more far practical in the long run (easy as piss to manufacture and there was no risk of the weapon getting stuck after a blow).

I do recall reading somewhere that there were accounts of American Indians (I think Cherokee) dual-wielding tomahawks since they were much lighter and one could be thrown without rendering the warrior unarmed.

The shell arcs downward within like ten feet, so it's really, really low velocity actually. More than I'd expect possible out of a powder fired weapon really, I'd expect it to be sping-launched or rubber-band-launched in that case, but them's the game.

Oh boy. Apparently the 'High' part of his name means something completely fucking different because the most dangerous thing this boss does is hotbox the shit out of you. Apparently the more hyped trailer bosses were doomed to something even worse than mediocrity.

An easy weak spot boss that summons mobs. There's nothing to really say, other than a skeleton guy who summons more skeletons isn't really breaking the mold there.

Even with the attempted jump scare he isn't frightening. 4 Kings is budget as fuck yet manages to be more unnerving because there's no floor for perspective. Had they opted for the same tactic, using Wolnirs glowing bracelets as a way to reveal good portions of the nearby area would make the far fight scarier while also naturally drawing players to the bangles they need to hit.

Once you break his bling he slips away like a school boy running up the wrong end of a slide. Queue sad trombone and the death of another forgettable boss.

Arguably one of the hardest boss fights in the game, especially for newer players.

His relentless aggression is designed to punish shielding, carefree rolling, and reckless sipping. His first stage is harder than the second, so unless you know how to parry stacking damage on him without bad trades can be tough before you've learned his patterns.

The second stage essentially trades one type of pressure for another. Not only are all of his attacks telegraphed now, there are a lot of generous recovery times for healing and damage.

The arena and music is fantastic, contrasting with all the nasty shit Sully has done. It's hard to fuck up fighting in a giant cathedral.

If you completed Yorhm before him, Pontiff signals to the player that the rest of the bosses here on out are going to be on a different level. An excellent, rewarding fight.

You can't get his sweet armor, which is fucking stupid.

>God Eater Aldritch
So Gwyndolin finally ran out of hallway and is now getting his taught ass masticated by a black slug monster. Like most people you probably didn't notice that "Aldrich" is a subtle reference to the word "eldritch".

Aldritch dreamed, and in this dream a cute doll showed him this sweet game about blood, tentacles, and eyeballs. But Aldritch didn't want to buy a PS4 , so he went to work implementing as many of the themes as he could.
He invented "The Deep age of the Ocean", organized creepy religious shit and one very special rim job later was set with body horror and a cool scythe attack.
Ending up looking pretty good.

Then the fight is mostly running from tracking arrow hail and smacking worm ass corner to corner. If anything, eating Gwyndolin seems to have made him weaker. The most impressive thing about Aldritch is that at some point he must've hit someone with lifehunt scythe.

>Yhorm the Giant and Ancient Wyvern
Lumping these two together because they're not worth individual posts.

Sweet Demon Souls reference bro, 100% worth ruining a Lord of Cinder fight referencing a better boss. I especially enjoyed how the sword is fucking useless and doesn't even work on any of the other giants in the game.
The riposte animation is cool as fuck, too bad most people will never bother to see it. Even fighting him without Storm Ruler is ruined by slow, easy to avoid attacks and a massive hp pool that makes the fight "riposte, rinse and repeat".
I'm not sure what even happened here. How late in development was Yorhm made? He had the chance of being great, and they destroyed it.

Wyvern's existence is a detriment to the game and a black stain on the name of everyone involved in creating DS3. Arema looks pretty though.

When "copy paste the DS2 giant and wyvern boss fights" is an appealing alternative to what you've designed, someone fucked up beyond belief.

>He had the chance of being great, and they destroyed it.
no he didn't. by a rule of the thumb, giant humanoids many times the MC's height are bad fights. it always involves the same basic movesets and you're always chipping at the ankles to kill them, which makes no sense. some good deviations from "chip at the ankles" are old iron king and yhorm. in the first case you're already on a "high platform" and with yhorm you can hit the head, both of which come closer to the much better "climb on the huge enemy to deliver hits where it most matters". with oik unfortunately this translates to "chip at the hands" but it's some progress. yhorm was better executed than any other giant boss, if we completely ignore the memeruler. even if it was "stagger, riposte, repeat", it's better than "hit, hit, hit, avoid attack telegraphed since jesus, repeat"

>The Nameless King
Frequently voted the hardest boss in the game, mostly by people who have difficulty reaction rolling to the weird staggered timings on all his attacks. Fast paced, epic and exciting. Like most enemies his magic is way cooler than the players, becoming the Zeus fight that Gwyn failed to be. His blatant identity is irresistible to lore fags, who no doubt got a decent cheque from youtube for it.

Another appealing "1v1 big guy" for the purists, this time tarnished by killing the bird every single time. King of Cameras seems like the brains of the operation, knowing that people will favor locking onto his tantalizingly close head while most of his attacks come from the tool on his back. Once you stop locking on, he's is fairly easy. But then you die to Nameless King too many times, and then the fucker starts hitting you a lot again, and you get hit twice by the fucking fire blast, so on.

I think the most depressing thing is that the dragon wasn't even worth a soul. Instead of having three boss soul weapons, wouldn't it be sweet if King of Storms soul gave you the lightning friendship miracle? Really hammer home that you killed a sentient being and not a mount.
That would also allow Nameless King to have a second stage, making a first try run all the more impressive and cementing him as the optional challenge boss. Maybe a dragon form that doesn't look like ass?

The arena and cinematics for this boss are top notch, who probably enters fights with an AC/DC song playing in the background. The design of the dragon might be too avian for some, but I like that it sets him apart. The hollowed out face of the Nameless King doesn't set really set him apart, but he makes up for it with cool armor.

>Dancer of the Boreal
In a failed effort to circumvent the rule 34, Dancer is a paper bag Amazon with a fat ass and sweet spins. Probably hates phantom range kat wielding weaboos, so very endearing right off the bat. As a sick practical joke, Pontiff gave her elemental swords without telling her about the resist calculations. He also made her dance for him or something.

This fight is excellently done. The dark room being lit by the fire of her sword, the steady footfalls of her pacing. It takes a massive amount of grace to make spinning around the room like a child pretending to be a helicopter seem majestic. There's still an inherent beauty to the Dancers movements, making her corruption by the Pontiff all the more poignant.

Aside from a case of the vacuum hands, there isn't really anything I can suggest to improve this fight.
Her moveset can be visually distracting and challenging to avoid, but there are plenty of windows to get hits, staggers and parrys in. My favorite is the leaping attack that follows up with a delayed AOE.

What if they had a heavy arc like a fireball and splash like when hitting water, essentially becoming the best spell, a lightning ball. In fact everything becomes a fireball, magic is now fixed and viable. Heal balls included.
Or they could just show spells trajectories and make it easier to aim them. Fireballs just happen to be the easiest to freeaim without any information shown.

>Oceiros the Consumed King
A standout fight for the extremely disturbing baby crying/potential murdering. Bonus points for the cut audio of him ripping Ocelotte to pieces, winning Oceiros the most fucking frightening boss in the game award.

Invisible? baby aside, this is a solid fight. His first stage attacks are a tad easy to avoid, but he has a pretty decent combo if he strikes after landing a jump.

His second stage is probably one of the better uses of aggression in the game. He charges the player constantly, but once avoided gives you time to heal or whack at his trailing tail. Unfortunately his most lethal attack seems to be "speedy walking" rather than his slash, breath and bite mix ups. Nerfing this in exchange for the occasional a crystal magic weapon buff on his claws would put most of his damage into places where it makes more sense. A low damage tail whip attack also wouldn't be out of place.
>>
>>148216116
spells don't have "base damage". it's a linear scale with the spelltool's m. adj.
to buff their "base" would be buffing faith in general. which on it's own isn't that bad, but considering patches is miya's self insert character, it ain't gonna happen. besides, the flame is dying and the gods are pretty much dead, not much to draw power from and therefore weak :^)
>>
Simple should give moderate scaling for dex/int, and blessed should give moderate scaling for str/fai

This is in addition to their passive effects.

>>148216639

>Dragonslayer Armor
A narrow arena that suites the suit of armor. Hits hard and can't be easily cheesed.

Blunt, straightforward fight. Second stage is mostly in the form of projectiles spammed at you from offscreen, which you'll usually dodge accidentally anyway. Unless you get hit by them, at which point Dragonslayer armor shows you that HE also has a projectile.

Amazingly you cannot obtain his armor, but you can get his shield. Have fun leveling the vit for it. Google images didn't have any art of this asshole, so maybe he's just too ugly.

Lightning spear should be the starting miracle for clerics and can be found for non clerics in undead settlement by the sunbro cloth and soup. Greater spear is on the wall in farron keep instead. Make the Sun spear the final reward for sunbros. Reduce the fall off damage/distance or straight up remove it. Increase projectile speed and while they're at it, buff the living shit out of storm/pillars/wotg somehow.

OR fuck all that and instead add decent damage reduction + casting speed to talisman hyperarmor weapon arts. Bam, faith is not complete dogshit anymore.
>>
>>148215481
>halving miracle damage

Jesus Christ no.

At 55 faith, with a +10 canvas talisman and two damage boosting rings, a Sunlight Spear at point blank does around 900 damage.

On my generic quality build, a Hollowslayer uncharged R2 poke, with no counter bonus does 420 damage. 360 on an R1. And unlike miracles it does not require FP and two ring slots.

If halving SS damage puts it barely above a basic GS R2, halving great lightning spears probably puts them into the R1 damage range of most weapons. And that's assuming you land them at melee range. It would make miracles even more pointless than they already are, apart from looking cool.

>Twin Princes
My favorite fight in the game. Good song, good difficulty, good lore.
Again, the boss has way more fun magic than you do. Teleportation mixed into the attack chains creates a satisfyingly reactive fight that plays a little differently each time. Long range magic intended to paint the player into the corner for Lorian to smash creates a satisfyingly reactive fight, forcing the player to juggle attention between the spells and what Lorian is doing.
The use of a revive mechanic might typically be annoying, but the Princes are exceptional.

The aesthetics of the attacks are stylish and impressive, the demonic Lorian playing off the angelic Lothric. Their reliance on each other is beautifully incorporated into the fight. Lorian is the biggest damage threat, yet cannot move without his brother. Lothric has powerful magic, yet relies on his brother for protection. The bittersweet tragedy in their backstories may by a little cliche, but emotional nonetheless. The easiest pull is that the player may very well agree with Lothric and view the linking of the fire as completely pointless. In that regard it's almost disappointing that they must be killed, but the fight is simply too good to be avoided.

The last touch is Lothric reaching out to comfort Lorian in death, their burden finally over.

>Soul of Cinder
The titular poster armor and final boss of the game. Set in the kiln, though instead of fighting your way through a host of black knights you get to warp right to the front door. Guess we cleared them all out the first time, yet it still seems odd that none would be around. The arena itself is plain, yet littered with flowers. Not sure if this is a life spawning from the ashes thing or they just thought it was very pretty.

The thing that annoys me the most about the SoC is how half-hearted his gimmick is aesthetic wise. His weapon shifts to fit the style of the soul he's channeling, yet his overall appearance doesn't change a bit. He constantly stays a big faceless armored knight. Ironically soulless, like a giant ash golem rather than a combination of countless souls.

Combat wise a good fight, aggressive but nothing we haven't seen before. Perhaps the most annoying thing his moveset offers is refreshing homing soul arrows even after he has switched out of mage form.

Then Gwyns theme starts playing, and again we have a boss that feel easier in his second stage. The most frightening thing he throws is his big explosive combo, which generally involves rapid back rolling once he telegraphs then watching him hit air.

Despite what I think are some aesthetic shortcomings, the SoC is an adequate final boss. Still, I'd prefer it if the DLCs offered a better capstone for the series - perhaps one that doesn't rely so heavily on content from a previous game.

>The Champ
Forgot the Champ.
Champ is a pretty cool guy. He's really aggressive, constantly chaining combos together. I like it when he kicks you out of the air. He's also the best no fucking around 1v1 in the game, it's just you and him. No mobs, no projectiles, no bird dragons, no whatever. The more annoying thing about him is that everything he does knocks you flat on your ass, keenly reminding you that poise doesn't exist.

Then you parry him, and then you don't get to see all his neat combos because now he's constantly on his ass.
Still kept the mood candles lit, now with a romantic atmosphere in the pitch darkness.

SoC is still the hardest fight for me
in my sucessful attempt he did the spear stab 5 times in a row, it's ridiculous
i've found that the exact timing for rolling into the spear spin is when it starts burning brighter and you hear the sound effect. i tried it, and you can safely roll into it even without the Bloodring. you can also evade upward spear thrust even if you mistime your roll, but end up below the spear - terrain can save you sometimes. you can safely attack him during some of his own attacks: you can hit him during the delayed sword swipe and roll or shoot him with the crossbow while he prepares the fireball then do a rolling r1, same for all lightning phase 2 attacks. you can provoke him to do the rolling attack during the scimitar phase by shooting him - it is easy to evade and punish since it has long recovery

What's left to talk about. Even PvP is less impressive and less deep than it was in DaS1, so there isn't a lot to keep the conversation going.

OK serious talk:

Is dark souls 2 better than dark souls 3 in terms of PvP, weapon viability, build viability, spells variety etc...

I havent played in 3 months, has anything changed? I quit because I played through the game 5 times with different builds, and the PvP just never stuck to me like dark souls 2 did.
Dark souls 2 was in my opinion the best dark souls for PvP, almost everything was viable.

Ds2 nailed it with the backsab mechanic.
Ds1 was too easy to get a backstab but ds3 you'd get lucky to ever get one in a normal pvp situation, but ds2 was perfect.

I want to like the PvP but i just cant.

Is it even fucking worth it to be a defensive protector build for co-op? I'm going to be a phantom the entire time.
Also coming up with a strong knightly name is harder than any of the bosses.
>>
>>148223012
Yes.
Skull ring + Havels GS coupled with 40 END makes NK a piece of cake
>>
>>148223000
>Ds1 was too easy to get a backstab but ds3 you'd get lucky to ever get one in a normal pvp situation, but ds2 was perfect.
There were 4 items in DS2 that could turn off backstabs just by having them equipped
>>
>>148223142
Like I said, it was the best for PvP but far, FAR from perfect.

There was still Soul Memory, Jester, Monscim etc...

Some thing were nerfed/removed though with updates and that's why I gave ds3 a little time before i started judging because i remeber infinte stunlocks in ds2....

But it's been a few months and nothing's really happened.

Poise was great aswell.
It was OP in ds1, doesnt exist in ds3 and just rewarding enough in ds2.

>Ds1 was too easy to get a backstab but ds3 you'd get lucky to ever get one in a normal pvp situation, but ds2 was perfect.
why would you say that? i manage backstabs often and i'm not even that good at pvp
basically the easiest way to get backstabs is to watch if your opponent is doing one of the following;
1) using a great weapon (if you exhaust their stamina by just rolling through their shit you can backstab them with ease provided you try and stay glued to their back)
2) parry fishing (bait a parry with a running attack or something else and then just swoop behind their back while they're still in the parry recovery animation)
3) using certain weapon arts (some weapon arts like the firelink greatsword one take a lot of time to both charge up and recover so it's hilariously easy to backstab someone using certain weapon arts)
might be that you're just not used to backstabbing in DS3, but try doing them with this shit in mind and you should see some improvement
>>
>>148223000
>dark souls 2 better than dark souls 3 in terms of PvP
the only thing ds2 did better in terms of pvp is having an arena with disabled healing and even that took like 2 months to patch in
everything else was shitted up in favor honorable arenafaggot pvp, random invasions are HORRIBLE in ds2
>weapon viability
lmao nope, it has even stricter pool of top tier weapons than ds3 currently and they never were nerfed, if anything, buffed
>build viability
there's no builds in ds2 thanks to soul memory
>spells variety
10000 versions of soul arrows, same as usual, only less viable than in ds3 thanks to monstrous casting time and slow as shit animations even at high cast speed
>Ds2 nailed it with the backsab mechanic.
it made them completely worthless
in ds3 you can bs punish parry attempts, in ds2 you cannot especially with a chestpiece fully disabling backstabs

Demon's souls had the best PvP.
Not even joking. Having to time your combo or heavy weapon hit to finish people off before they grass was much more interesting than spamming chip damage and combos mindlessly to either kill them, or if it's an invasion, drain out their estus.
>>
>>148230565
Yeah cause you can't drain someone from their grass, which makes it way more exciting.
>>
>>148231240
It does. It means you have to time your finishing combo to drain what remains of their health bar. In dark souls if you catch someone in a combo, you can cause huge amounts of damage. In demon's souls, if you mindlessely mash your combo against people, you aren't going to get anywhere because they'll grass up.

Halberd v halberd is a good option but spears aren't reliable imo. I like fighting Halberds with ugs, GS, or a fast weapon just reaction dodging everything and punishing the inevitable panic rolls

The r1s aren't parriable at range you need to be able to parry their hands, but if you see they are rolling r1 happy just parry a split second after their head comes up and you'll get it 9/10 with latency outliers

Also if they're using the BKG the r2 is really easy to parry and if they're using gundyrs the charge is really easy to parry on the run or on the swing slash if they start the spin out of range

If they're two handing avoid trades if you can't win the dick swinging contest, but keep in mind they give up HA and damage when they one hand so take advantage of that

Glaives are vulnerable to being out-poked by long-reach weapons with low recovery, like the WP's stupid sprinting attack or some of the longer spears. They also have an absolutely trash running attack that can be strafe-backstabbed. Swordspear loses both of those weaknesses by having a spear moveset built-in, giving it a really good running attack and an answer to long-reach poking weapons by becoming a long-reach poking weapon itself.
>>
>>148237102
There's one scenario I've found it to be reliable in, and that's getting a last hit to secure a kill. Ideally go for a HA trade, but other than that its range and cast time are the biggest things that hold it back from being viable.
>>
>>148237319
The running attack can be backstabbed? It doesn't have a recovery that slow. Whoever got backstabbed like that didn't roll away.
>>
>>148237526
If you sprint to their side when they start it up, it'll run right past you because the tracking is awful and you can just backstab them as they pass you.

Oh, I see that. You still run the risk of lag from just running instead of rolling but it pays off. Might be even better to do that with a shield. I bet some idiots do that running around like headless chicken thing with glaives trying to do running attacks? Because if someone uses the running attack properly from a distance they don't run that risk of getting backstabbed I think.

Why does it seem like I'm the only one who hates Champion Gundyr and Pontiff?

I love Nameless, SoC, Abyss Watchers, and Dancer. But my god pontiff and champion are so fucking annoying. they both attack for 2 hours straight and maybe if you're lucky you can get an attack in on them while you dodge roll like a fucking idiot all day

What I want to know is if it's solid gold in verse, to better conduct Nameless' lightning based attacks, or if it's just bronze. People say gold weapons would be too heavy, but Nameless is a fictional former god of war, so he doesn't have to worry about that.

I strongly dislike pontiff just because his design is boring. He has long attack chains without any safe gaps to attack in them, so every time he starts attacking, you just sit on your thumbs and wait for him to stop, or move into a blindspot and hit him until he starts again. He's not really any different from much easier bosses except for the fact that his attack chains just last much, much longer. It's honestly kind of boring when fighting him just amounts to 7 consecutive dodgerolls followed by two attacks and repeat.

I think Champion Gundyr is much better for this because hie chains attacks together constantly, but leaves gaps in them large enough to safely attack, so while he's constantly putting pressure on you, you're never waiting for a chance to hit him. if you find yourself waiting, it's because you're missing openings. Also, unlike Pontiff, he never really 'ends' a chain of attacks, so you're forced to find those openings and take risks rather than just wait and wait and wait for him to stop and let you hit him.

Both of them have the issue of not having enough health, and Pontiff does too little damage, to the point where I usually just trade him to death on each subsequent character/NG cycle instead of playing the boring "wait for his string to end" game.

HA has a lot of subtle mechanics going on under the hood that make it unreliable and unpredictable. They really screwed the pooch in that regard.

Also apparently testing has revealed that, while ultras have HA by default, it's weaker and more breakable at every poise value than GS and Glaive HA.

The vertical 2H moveset of ultras seems to have the latest-starting HA. You don't actually have stagger-resistance until the weapon is past your head and coming downwards, which makes it very vulnerable to interruption before HA activates.
>>
>>148243329
It was supposed to be a DS1 fanservice and i'd rather see dragon greatsword from DS1 with a new moveset than FUGS.

You know i think the most stable area DSG has been is profaned capitol pit for the cospvp event.
Smooth as butter there.

He probably switched to siegbraus, but yes refilling estus is possible.

The demon bridge and profaned capital are both perfectly smooth. I don't know why highwall is always so dumpster but it's as bad as smouldering lake for me, even archdragon peak is more stable.

Started making a Strenght build at DaS2 because everyone keeps saying it's OP, it's been good so far but I'm having issues with durability despite never hitting walls. What am I doing wrong? I'm using the Greatsword (Guts' Sword) and I can't go from one bonfire to the other with it, it just breaks instantly.

also do NOT buy this game on ps3 unless you enjoy 10 fps

He chugged three times which is why I'm assuming it's Estus.

Counted the flasks down, then it was a divine blessing, then he drank 3 times more.

>>148249745
Seems dumb to me even if you're invading, moreso if you were being a coop phantom like this guy.

Tiring stuff, but not unexpected. Just BC'd out desu.

I thought I'd share this with /dsg/, because this game is pretty cool. it's called Necropolis.

It's published by Bamco and is basically a roguelike souls clone with permadeath. Shits fun, check it out.

To keep it on topic, DLC when? The main game has gotten dull, 'duelling' is boring and invasions are shit because hosts have too much of an advantage ect ect.

I was just about to ask /dsg/ what they thought about necropolis. 30 bucks is pretty steep for what seems like a short indie game.

That must be it. It looked like you got latency hits more times than I swung and you were fighting something that wasn;t there.

I've played an hour and a half of it and it's fun. It's got drop in drop out coop, so I imagine it will be a lot of fun to do runs with friends. I've only played solo so far.

The only criticism I've got so far is the lack of variety in combat. So far there is only sword and board, but as mentioned above I havnt invested that much time yet. There is some variety in weapon choice but not much, here's hoping they update it with magic/ranged weapons and more melee weaponry.

Does good damage with some splash damage, relatively speaking a low cost, and a decent range

Hard to aim, almost impossible to freeaim, you'll basically never hit it in PvP despite its very respectable damage

However, it's a good way to get some extra hits in before drinking more bloo joos

One of the worst spells in the game.
It's the slowest-casting pyromancy, has very limited range compared to other projectile spells, and has a delayed detonation at a fixed point that's very easy to dodge. It is out-damaged by both Chaos orb and Vestiges, and is like the 4th or 5th highest damage pyro, meaning that there's never a situation where you would use it over spells that are faster, longer-ranged and higher damage.

Lol, you're probably used to DaS3's babby durability. Just keep some Repair Powder on you.
