I had 12 units left as the dwarves, my lord alive, and I was running everyone towards the capture point of a city. The greenskins had maybe 4 or 5 units left, all about to die with less than 10% leadership or whatever the white bar is. Most of them are still on the walls of the city. Suddenly my whole army starts routing and I lose with a numerical advantage vs the greenskins, with no enemies near me.

An event, you choose which ork god is superior. The rewards are effectively identical.

It's probably part of a running gag, the orcs (and space orks) have trouble telling which one is which. It's pretty common to read some variation on "He was blessed by Gork! (Or possibly Mork.)

The game Gorkamorka is about a bunch of orks who crash landed on a desert world, gathering the scrap from the wreckage to build a machine to fly/teleport/walk whatever off the planet and back into the WAAAGH!!!

Eventually it started looking like one of their gods and the backdrop of the game is the civil war that broke out when they tried to decide which one.

Really solid troops, and they have enough that they can handle all that shit. The sicilian invasion is inevitable(historically accurate as well). And as long as you know that's coming you can pretty much just concentrate on the muslims. Defending sieges in M2 is incredibly easy anyway. Eventually Hungary will attack as well probably.
Whether or not Venice attacks seems to be dependent on Milan and other factors but is similar to sicily.

If you want easy mode give the Moors a try. They're strong and fun. Their units fall off later on though.

40K has never come close to having a game as good as TotalWarhammer, and they won't until Creative Assembly gets around to it. All the RTS's for that series so far have been sub par and down right awful at times. To add more damning words to it, they just haven't been very good in much of anything.

France is harder than they appear, they usually have to fight on multiple fronts. Also, while you cavalry is indeed 'the best' it isn't the best by too large a margin unfortunately. It is also super late game.
I usually play the other side of the channel which plays a lot more obviously, but I suppose as France you probably want to fuck up England first. Or fuck with the Spanish factions in hope that it gives the Moors the edge over them(moors always start out the best in the first engagement but SS spain usually ends up winning). Then you can crusade against the Moors with no papal brakes.

If you want super heavy shit and don't mind playing from a later start date I'd recommend the Teutonic Order, they have very nice models and a more interesting(in my opinion) campaign.

Poland early is pretty nice too. They have great cavalry as well, and I think some mounted archers. Not the strongest but still very good.
What's especially nice is that I assume some Polaboo modded a lot of models, and SS attached them to Poland. They're one of the best looking factions in the mod.

Maybe you're using them wrong. Chariots have a high charge bonus but low atk or armor pen. That means you are only supposed to use them to charge at unarmored & unshield units, then back away and repeat.

A charge bonus is a temporary increase to atk damage for a few seconds. I'm of the mind that any unit with a speed above 40 can be used as a charging/flanking unit.

Again, early on not many factions have particularly defining units. As England you have good infantry as well as archers, so you can typically hold against their charges. Battles will always be fairly simple in early western europe medieval battles.
The issue is the campaign.
You'll want to secure the British Islands first. You may piss off the pope when you beat up scotland. You can deal with that a few ways.
Other than that, make sure you fortify Normandy. France WILL attack you for it. No matter how good allies you are.
Also Norway will try and attack you every now and then on and off, if you keep a couple of cogs floating up in the north sea you see them coming.

There is an image posted around here regarding an English playthrough of Medieval 2. It's pretty accurate but I don't have it on hand.

There's a number of conditions to papal favour, you ideally want the pope to like you more than the lad you're fighting of course. But the pope primarily acts against the utter destruction of factions.
Which generally translates to him telling the bigger(more provinces) faction to stop attacking the smaller faction.
You can just wait out the mission he issues against attacking the target usually. And when you are unrestricted you'll want to include siege in your army to blitz down a province in a single turn, before the pope can warn you.

Alternatively you can just tell the pope to go fuck himself, though christian europe don't much care for that.

Each of your infantry units can spawn magical ladders, so you can flood the wall fairly quickly without siege towers. Of course you'll take more losses on the walls then, but it's a measured risk. And the towers are AI controlled(I think, I forget if a player can command them; but that'd only apply for you or an opponent in multiplayer anyway), so you can screen your siege equipment with trash units quite easily.

Abusing autoresolve has always been the best way to win on the campaign map. You can always do better than the AI in even battles, but if autoresolve says you'll crush them, autoresolve gives you hardly any casualties. It's especially noticable in sieges.
If you, with a full stack attack a city with a hypothetical garrison of four trash units manning four towers on the battle map, you'll lose like 150 men to the towers and 50 before you cut down the enemy trash. If you autoresolve you lose less men than a single tower can kill in like thirty seconds.

No, because the starting Altdorf garrison will fend off almost any early game stack in a siege.

I've actually tested this in custom games (hiding my lord off in a corner of the map), giving the orcs 20 units (which they rarely build up to) and even given the orcs some advantages like some Big 'Uns, which they won't have. Not to mention they won't have 6 towers and a battering ram in the campaign, unless you let them siege for more than 5 turns.

It's a very easy fight to win. Just keep your reiksguard in the centre to clear up enemies who rout into town (the stupidest mechanic).

How would you implement skaven? The way I see it as far as skaven are concerned is that they could go for a rather interesting route and add a second layer to the campaign map, so its a button that you push and it transitions you to that layer. They could potentially replace the underway travel mode so that it simply transitions to this layer and there's some sort of ghost image or indicator as to where your forces can emerge. It would certainty add a lot more tactical depth for the greenskins, dwarfs, and skaven. I would also make the skaven a "horde" faction. They do in fact have cities but you never control them, and completely unique to them you don't actually build any structures. Yes there are skaven cities but you don't actually control them and you have no money ever. No trading, no taxes, to upkeep. In order to recruit new units you have to complete missions and tasks for the council of 13. When you do this you get allocated certain troops based on what clans and council members you helped. Then sort of like in medieval 2 where you could recruit 3 units and then had to wait a few turns, its sort of like that but you can only recruit what they give you and its completely free and instant, essentially raising like with the VC but with no cost associated. And to stop you from being able to do whatever the fuck you want wherever the fuck you are with no consequences you suffer massive attrition and desertion you venture away from objectives like with crusading armies in medieval 2. They would also have a mechanic like with the greenskin fightiness only instead of attrition if it reaches zero you must fight off a certain portion of your army that turns against you sensing you as weak. Only the most elite units (stormvermin, rat ogres because they're too stupid to know any better) won't betray you. Cont. in next post

They do need to have to be able to build buildings though, the big clans are massive builders. Probably replace money with warpstone or whatever it's called now, maintenance and building would be done by skavenslaves, but they're so perpetually numerous, trading for them with warpstone is the best idea. It's another reason buildings and development is important, a lot of clans became powerful by going literally nowhere and finding a ton of warpstone.

Take it slow. The Empire is almost unique in that they can advance as slowly as they like. If you're having problems, then take Grunburg and sit on it. Develop Altdorf and Grunburg to the point where you can support two full armies. It'll only take 15 or so turns. Then unite Reikland in about two turns with your doomstacks.

Alternatively, do my strat. Build up a second army at the same time as Karl's, and have them sit on Grunburg while Karl unites Reikland.

You can also keep a certain number of regular units by intimidating the packmasters, whether this requires another mechanic or its simply assigned like you would say the immortalz flag I don't know. These units would always be loyal and in battle would have a passive inspire to nearby troops.

They also have a special inspire ability where all units become temporarily immune to fear, terror, and moral loss but it requires sacrificing a portion of the unit and is drawn from the winds of magic and the power of the ability is determined by the level of the unit. So sacrificing slaves does absolutely nothing but waste magic, where as sacrificing stormvermin makes it last a decent amount of time, and sacrificing a hero makes it last a long time. This ability can only be cast by lords and legendary lords.

Your "allies" will be given the same objective as you so expect to haul ass if you don't want them stealing your glory. And if your "favor" reaches 0 like the gudge mechanic your going to be ded because the entire of skavendome will declare war on your ass and you don't get diplomacy.

What if you controlled a single city throughout the whole game and unlocked new technology through "stealing" from other factions. They are like quest battles and the higher it is the harder they are to get. And because skaven are dicks you don't actually get to bring your army. You only get to bring what you're given. So fluff wise if you lose you can think of it as those treacherous fools replaced your stormvermin with common clanrats. Buildings and units are unlocked by completing missions for the council of 13. So instead of quest battles giving you gear they give you new units and buildings.

You don't actually get new equipment for your legendary lords, only building and unit unlocks. So your characters don't get more powerful, only the number of armies and soldiers. Forcing you to rely on overwhelming numbers since all but your LL will got shit on in battle

This. Personally I like DeI's system for Rome 2 where both Attacker and Defender suffer attrition in sieges. Attrition should start right from the first turn and should be about 5% per turn. This would require attackers to bring up reinforcements if they intend to wait it out and would actually make the 'Attrition Reduction' skill in the Warrior Priest's tree somewhat useful.

The second is generally better.

The Empire Secessionists have a habit of having everyone declare war on them, many of whom will grab their land.

Note that this isn't necessarily a bad thing. If Bastonne or Marienburg take a town, and your army is in range to counter-attack before they rebuild the garrison to full strength, then you can declare war and crush their main force, allowing you to quickly seize some other territories while they recover.

I like sieges but they are kinda bullshit. It's far easier to take your time, position your units to the sides so that only 2 towers are targeting you, then take them out with artillery before breaking down walls.

Fighting on the walls will just tie you up, breaking them with artillery is faster which allows you to position melee troops and ranged units for easier access to the enemy armies.

Empire has very tough lands to defend. If I could make a suggestion, don't expan very much and set up in those mountains to the best the instant a chance presents itself. You want to curry favour with other human lords. You don't have to enter every war but you should protect important allies. There should be a happy 20 turns where imperial infighting is your only concern so use this time to get ready because it'll end once the VC's or Chaos show up.

There are five Wizard Lords in the game.

Azhag
Balthasar
Kemmler
Mannfred
Archaon

Azhag and Mannfred are melee/magic hybrids by design.

Archaon is pretty much a dedicated melee champ who happens to have a free lore of fire.

Kemmler can cast Invocation of Nehek right off the bat, giving him a massive degree of survivability that also bolsters nearby units. His Tomb Blade only enhances this.

Balthasar Gelt has nothing to enhance his close combat abilities, beyond minor buffs that are intended for whole units. His legendary items gives buffs more in line with green items.

Kemmler is a better starter LL then Gelt. Both are weaker then the other option available of course.

Kemmler's raise dead cost reduction is actually meaningful earlygame. As mentioned by other anon the invocation is relevant in early battles. The combination and slower progress speed (he needs to take an additional turn recruiting vs manfred) allows Kemmler to use the horde method to get a battlemarker and get higher tier units to make up for his own shortcomings easier.

Gelt on the other hand really has no early game benefits or tricks to pull. So he's just left as the awful handicap. The worst is if the enemy lord decides to kill him because then you take the leadership penalties associated with that. Throw in how piss the early metal spells are. It basically all adds up to Gelt needing unit superiority but having no tricks to get there.

Snotlings could have enormous unit sizes and would never flee, they're too dumb to know when they're losing. A unit or two spread wide could engage an enemies entire front line whilst everybody else flanks.

Not sure I agree that gelt has the better starting units and I know I don't think it matters for their respective starts.

For what Kemmler is dealing with early game the wraiths are just fine and a unit of terror causing armor piercing cav is quite nice. They synergize well with invocation. More importantly Kemmler can immediately supplement his starting roster via base raise dead for that first fight.

In comparison Gelt's starting battle line feels very light. That artillery and outrider unit are both fairly support oriented units and don't directly add to the line. Greatswords may be great but a single unit of them is forced to do a ton of carrying. Which leads to the biggest problem for Gelts super-early game. Leadership. If your line is surrounded and your not-gs units are getting chewed up then it's fairly easy for a chain route to kick off.

A Gelt start needs to be so defensive that you lose campaign initiative in a big way. Which is a major issue when the self same LL needs a ton of levels to be a good spellcaster. Kemmler is just a hair slower then Mannfred and can outpace Mannfred in development via better economy due to cheaper raise dead.

Hell I'm pretty sure that -25% raise dead applies to the entire VC faction when you choose Kemmler which means he's also pretty good for "Oh crap I need to hire a lord and raise an army" situations.

Gelt's in a better situation as a recruited LL because you can have him replace a well developed stack and go on a auto-resolve spree to get him up. As well as using a secondary army and agents to offset his problems because your economy is already developed.


So in all seriousness. Gelt is the worst LL and worst LL to start with by a wide margin. He is just awful. Only do it for a challenge.

(I've tried to make Gelt work, on normal, with and without mods! I've also played Kemmler. Gelt only works when he has an OP magic mod going.)

Hell I'm even playing the start of Gelt just to remind myself how it goes.

So first fight the auto-resolve is against Gelt. 7 units vs 6.

Gelt, Greatsword, Swordsman, Spearman, Crossbowman, Outriders, Mortar.
vs
Melee lord, x2 Swordsman, x2 Spearman, x1 Crossbowman.

Gelt has a 3 melee line while the other lord has a 5 melee line (including the lord). Gelt has ranged superiority.

It's not impossible to win this fight by any means but it isn't an easy fight. If you lose track of Gelt and he gets attacked by their lord you lose. There's also a good bit more micro then other starting battles. Frankly Gelt needs to hide in Aldorf for a turn or two.

I often shove Karl into Altdorf for a turn to get 10 units anyway. With his campaign bonus, you can charge out of there, hit the rebel army and pull back onto Reikland soil to recruit the very same turn.

The fight is easy enough to win with what you get at the start with Karl, but larger numbers mean smaller losses, and less risk with higher momentum.

So it wasn't exactly a hard win because I knew what I was doing. Greatswords took on and beat two units and did like over 100 casualties. The swordsman unit got peeled out of that combat by the enemy lord who killed 75 people and is the sole reason that swordsman unit is so messed up. Spears held the other enemy units while outriders focused one of the units down. Art + Crossbows focused enemy crossbows out then crossbows re-tasked to support the greatswords and get them out of the fight faster.

So there's two big problems with rushing straight into that first fight with Gelt and only starter units. The first is that there is no good option for dealing with their lord. He gets to do whatever he wants and you are far better off making the rest of his army hurt to the point he runs. The second major issue is the potential of overcasting his starter spell and taking damage which gets problematic.

Though it does occur to me they fixed one of the big problems with Gelt in the recent patch. Before this patch auto-resolving with Gelt would do a lot of damage to him because of his low fight stats. That should be better now.

If you know what you're doing and want to unite Reikland ASAP, you can skip it. If you want to go a bit slower, then it's not bad shout.

The AI seems to weigh relative powers of the combatant armies before deciding it's lost too many men to keep fighting and triggering Army Losses rout.

So more men seems to mean that your army balance is higher, and theirs is relatively lower, meaning it's easier to trigger a complete rout earlier if you play well, cutting down on your losses. At least that's my guess based on experience.

Hopefully CA can do something to make them feel unique.

Their roster includes flyers, melee and archers so that could be interesting as they potentially are the only faction to have all unit types.

But horde gameplay feels boring in TWW, its not like playing the Huns since that map is like a quarter the size and everyone just chases you with doom stacks.

They are definite horde. Should be able to access places in the woods no one else can (beastpaths). Should do all their recruiting and replenishing in there too.

Should have the best monsterous melee infantry. Should be all shock, high hp, lower armor, lots of frenzy, all vanguard deployment, new lores and some shared roster with WoC (warhounds, giants, spawn) but have access to better shit (razorgors, cygors, minotaurs etc.)

Its going to be similar to chaos with some different twists but the two were once the same faction so it would bee off if they were not reminiscent of their better-smelling cousins.

It's very likely that a magic review by CA fixes Gelt enough that all his other problems are not worth changing. Though I really think he needs a better bonus (I'm all for like a -10% miscast chance for all wizards).

But yeah that really goes to show what I mean. It's a winnable battle but it's way too hard for your first battle in the campaign as gelt.

It's from a mod that adds bayonets to all the modern infantry in Fall of the Samurai. When in melee they use the combat animations for Yari Samurai, which means they occasionally do wonky stuff like that.

I finished the second quest battle for Mannfred (the one with the giant and boar reinforcements) and I decided to save the replay so I can check out the blood dlc in detail.

For some reason, the 4x boar boy reinforcements started behind my main force (they have always spawned in the north west for me). Whatever, killed them off as well as the rest of the orcs.

When I watched the replay, the boar boys spawned in their normal spot, not behind my forces. The battle then carried out completely differently, as if the AI was taking over and making its own decisions.

Weird stuff.

Dunno. Been playing ATTILA multiplayer campaign with my brother religiously; all super-stable, no desyncs whatsoever.

Word of advice - do play it on VERSUS instead.

You have all the neccessary options of getting into an alliance diplomatically (which is for some reason DISABLED in Warhammer for human players), but you get to have more fun battles as the other player can always opt to control the enemy AI the other one is currently fighting.

The amount of epic battles we've had was priceless.

Trolls have lower defense, damage, significantly lower max health, and half as much leadership. Dragon ogres are also missile resistant whereas ranged fire is pretty much the go to way to deal with trolls.

Trolls are great, but dragon ogres specifically excel in situations in which trolls get shat on.

I'm in love, /twg/. This is my first time playing Attila after having played everything Rome 1 and beyond. I haven't fought so many even battles in any other game, it's always a stomp one way or the other.

Godan's chosen clubmen sacrificed themselves so we could defend against the Geats who are trying to swoop in and save the Jute weaklings after I took their city. I'm about to hunt down the remaining general who took off with his reinforcements before I had a chance to kill him. I think this is my new favorite TW game.

A whole extra underground map that'd only be used by maximum of 1-4 factions seems really unnecessary and it'd slow campaign down even further.

Just have a handful of Skaven only settlements and let them attach as a secondary city to other factions existing cities undetected. The bigger the cities get the more chance they have of being detected. There's a limited amount of buildings that can be constructed in these but once you complete certain specific buildings you can rise up and siege the cities - from da inside.

Other factions can use heroes to detect Skaven and fight underground battles against the Skaven cities OR construct buildings to counteract them.

Making lore friendly Skaven without having them be annoying as fuck as a faction will be the challenge. I just hope they aren't bland.

The message in the OP is kind of innaccurate. Guard mode locks the individual unit formations, but maintaining group formation on the attack isn't really possible or realistic.

The method described only really has your troops automatically attack, it doesn't maintain the group formation.

Actually represented pretty well with the routing in game i think. If they don't die I'll get 2-3 uses out of gobbos having them retreat out of fights and rally and come back.


I think the more numerous factions should've been allowed +2-5 extra unit count potential for MP at least. Would encourage fielding more cheap units. hope the skaven at least have large unit sizes

Empire of Sigmar is pretty lore friendly. Adds Dismounted Reiksguard, more Knightly Orders, Death's Head, Carrobourg Greatswords and more.

Only thing that's a bit against the lore is greatsword-wielding Grail Knights, but that's nothing compared to the other shit mods out there.

They really do need to reveal more info on what spells actually do. Because that seems like a perfectly reasonable effect for balancing and gameplay purposes. "THIS SPELL IS GOOD AGAINST LARGE HEAVY UNITS AND SHIT AGAINST SMALL" would be good enough.

There's a few unit stats that they don't have displayed (weight, melee attack speed, chance to stun, higher ground bonus) that would be nice to see.
There's so much going on in this game that is hidden from the player.

I don't like it when gamers tier list everything and suck the fun out of a game but hiding information from the player hasn't done anything to counter that.

I'd just like for most factions units have a little niche for them to excel at and be a viable pick in certain situations. eg.GOBBOZ don't get enough love when boyz are available and the price difference aint that much

They're armoured all the time. An Orc can figure out why a shield is useful then they can understand the virtue of armour against return fire.
Black Orcs are uniquely disciplined amongst Orcs and could probably fire quite cohesive volleys.

It's still a fucking terrible idea for a unit though.

Black Orcs are the smartest Orcs. They're the only ones who aren't complete morons. They're the only ones with military discipline or who even repair their own armor. OF COURSE they could use a bow.

Black Orcs realize they might do a better job and do it themselves, refraining from the threat or a small act of violence and instead sitting down and hammering out a buckle from their helmets

Attila is substantially better in gameplay but substantially worse optimized. And a lot of people don't favour the campaign setting with a lot of pre-existing large factions.

Spawn are the best option though I can't recall the price off of my head.

I would like Dragon Ogres to be useful but its got the chaos curse of under-stated over-priced. Fuck you CA.
