It is an extremely rewarding story and you might be too young to connect with its themes.

The story is about family and how to cope with loss, tragedy, and grief. The pay off is thematically incredible and the endings both perfectly convey the message of the work.

Higurashi is much easier to like because it is a story about changing the future, something that young people strongly identify with, since so much of their lives are ahead of them. Umineko is a story about coming to terms with an unchangeable and not entirely knowable past.

I think it really helps if you have had a funeral for a loved one and have had to go to their place and figure out how they died. The investigative process of going through their things, determining the likely cause of death, and discovering what someone's life was like before their final days. It is also about forgiveness, mercy, and the power of stories to transform tragedy. It is not a coincidence that an entire episode is set at a funeral. At the time of writing it, BT, one of his closest friends (possibly more), died of cancer. So a lot of that is in there.

It's a story for an older audience that has more to look back at and more to relate to in the story.

I reread Umineko with the answer in mind and to be quite honest Ep1 is solvable by itself. It'd just be difficult because 1) you won't expect Hideyoshi to lie about Shannon's corpse because 2) The whole shkanon thing is pretty hard to think of from just the clues given due to how the VN presents their characters 3) you don't know the full history behind the family so it's harder to put together why the accomplices would do what they do

Point being, in Ep1 pretty much everyone is "clearly" dead from Battlers POV except the culprit. With that, everything else should fall into place.

Those thematic concepts are overly common in literature though. In everything, actually. I couldn't even begin to name you how many compositions deal with those themes. It has nothing to do with being too young to appreciate them--that's just a fallacy, it's more like they aren't the themes that were initially the focus of the story from the get-go. BT was alive and influenced the majority of Umineko and Higurashi. His shadow over both of those projects were considerable (it was known that BT was essentially r07's editor of a kind. Some claim that he literally ghost wrote for r07, but I don't know how valid that is), it wasn't until after BT's death that r07 started jumping the shark and shifting the story in a completely different manner. As he said himself, he had simply lost "the joy of writing". This also explains the huge gap in quality that the writing faced.

The themes which you claim were essential to the novel weren't particularly highlighted until the two final episodes--both of which are commonly referred to as the worst ones and for good reasons; they undermined everything that came before them, they made no effort to bring any proper resolution to previous mysterious and concepts, and their overly-condescending nature to those who DID want answers (clearly evident in the dialogue itself) was full of fluffy pomp which did little other than satisfy the writer's own self-satisfaction with his particular personal dilemma.

The ending arcs to Umineko are the ravings of a man in grief--barely kept together by his own desire to vent via writing. It may make an interesting examination in its own right--had it been standalone--but, as it stands, it had no place being in the setting it leeched onto. You may muse and talk about stereotypical thematic elements regarding death and grief, and how the unfulfilled nature of the story reflects this; but such a tonal shift is more interesting than good. The ending was a failure.

It only really gets good for Route E when everything starts to tie together.
Kind of shits itself in the prime routes though.
The direction is pretty chaotic since just about each route had a different writer.
As far as vision for 2030 goes, I think I/O tried way to hard to look futuristic and cyberpunk while Root Double didn't even fucking try.
