Real talk here, I read books but the Western world can't write books anymore. Or rather, the publishing industry is very corrupt. 21st century fiction is usually loaded with the authors political views, SJW-ism and just generally plainly bad books with shallow mainstream appeal, or rather, that's the only ones that are allowed to get published. See the disaster that was Hugo awards. So yeah, if you want to read books your only options are older ones.

This problem doesn't really exist with contemporary Japanese fiction, especially since VN/LN are fairly niche. Cool stuff is coming out every year, authors are allowed to get creative etc etc. That's the real thing I like about them. Not really related to your argument, but I kind of wanted to get this off for some time now.

I'm on Episode 4 of Umineko, and I don't know if I can take this pacing anymore.
I love the mystery aspect of it. I love the interaction between Battler and Beatrice. I love theorizing how it could have been done and seeing how my theories hold up. I love the way it seems to close up every possibility of a mundane explanation until suddenly something clicks that opens a hole in this seemingly impenetrable mystery.

But the supernatural scenes and future crap feel like such slog to get through. The supernatural scenes go on for way too long, and I have to believe that they're just fake shit trying to misdirect me, because what's the point of ANY of this game if I'm going to accept magic is real? So what's the point to even reading them? And the future stuff feels so disconnected from the rest of the game, I can't bring myself to feel interested in it. I just feel like taping down CTRL during the parts where Ange is getting bullied and being delusional, because none of it feels like matters to the rest of the story.
And now right when things are getting interesting again, Battler breaks down and it cuts to another damn future scene. I feel strongly tempted to just delete the game and look up the summary on a wiki. I like the content, but the piecemeal delivery is frustrating me beyond belief.

What do I do, /vn/? Can anyone say something to convince me it's worth it to keep going? Or is it something where if I'm not enjoying those parts, I should just give up and accept this isn't for me?

You have arguably two more good episodes after 4 (5 and 6. Though 6 is where things start to go downhill). 5 is one of the best, if not the best. Unfortunately 7 and 8 are complete garbage. Judging by what you're saying you would probably absolutely be livid with Episode 7 in particular--which is really just hours and hours of info dumping (really good tea party, though). You're especially going to hate those last two episodes based on:

So it's really just up to you whether or not you should continue reading. It has its strong points but it is far more 'fun' than it is 'good', and one of the biggest problems is, as you say, its length. It takes an enormous amount of time to properly convey anything. I imagine most of the people who love Umineko overall focus on the emotional ride you get from it. It does have quite a bit of pathos, and it's easy to coincide emotional profundity with actual quality. This is especially apparent in the latter episodes where if you spend any amount of time thinking about the plot it basically falls apart. This focus on the emotional ("Without love it cannot be seen, etc.) is ultimately what the writer ends up rolling with and using to excuse any plot points left unclear. There are so many unfired chekhov's guns at the end of the story that it's insane.

The Kohaku route was allegedly thrown in last minute, and it has some silly endings. Still nice if you're a Kohakufag and if you wanted more screentime.

I personally thought Hisui got the best ending. She was easily the most 'normal' of the cast, and being able to put her mindbroken sister and the Tohno household behind her is a good thing. She can go live a half-decent life with Shiki until his brain finally fries out from seeing too many dots and lines.

It is a shame. I've gone about it at length before and it's really just more homogenization of Takeuchi's previous designs. With Arc's vents ripped out and her face Saberized, she's lost more than just a bit of her previous character. I'm not too miffed about her outfit change. I think it's minor in comparison to the other changes.

Also, with Ciel's new hair style change all five of the main heroines all literally have basically the same front hair design. And Arcueid, Kohaku, Hisui, and Ciel have extremely homogeneous hair designs in comparison to one another (short hair, bangs down).

The redesigns were largely unnecessary in the first place. I suppose my only solace is that the large majority of fan-art still being made is of the original designs.

Well, ufotable didn't pussy out of showing Sakura getting raped by worms when she was still a kid, so I don't know if they would pussy out of Kohaku's backstory. Assuming it even gets covered. At best I think we would get an adaption of the Arcueid manga, so Kohaku's story may not even be relevant. I really doubt that ufotable would adapt all 5 routes.

It's way more fucking creepy with the way that Shiki stalks Arc originally. In the manga he kind of tails her for a few blocks and then kills her out in the open. In the original he follows her all the way to her apartment, fucking sniffs through the mail, talks about how he's literally getting an erection from following her, and so on. Shit is way better in the original than in the manga.
