In 2013, Maxmaps took the wheel, pretending to be a marketer / CM / dev to the fanbase, when in reality he was placed in charge of making sure the final product did not scale beyond the $5mil of our money Adrian and Ezequiel were actually allowing to be spent on the development of KSP.

So, with the cancelling of resources and DLCgate, we saw the future drastically narrow down to a point. This shift was embodied by Maxmaps' continually repeated statement that "sandbox is scope complete" -- we must deconstruct this statement to fully understand the multifaceted meanings. This will take time.

What is important is that in this moment a paradigm was created. A paradigm that suggested "sandbox" was a complete iteration of the game and therefore a major milestone. When in fact it was an arbitrary and artificial line in the sand designed to limit expenditure so that the majority of the invested money could be fraudulently embezzled.

By "moving on" to career mode, they created a false equivalency suggesting career and sandbox were two facets of an overall thing. When they failed to deliver career in a timely manner, science mode was added. Another one of Max's failed promises leading to a compromised feature in the game.

After resourcegate and the declaration that Sandbox was "scope complete," we saw all development begin to pace itself based on business deals rather than development capacity. Every update after this took 6 months, and failures to move the NASA deal along quickly enough led to completely mutilating .23 through .24, which would have been fantastic updates chock full of content if half the content didn’t need to be removed to satisfy an NDA.

And then of course, begins the true Max regime of .25 on.

Ending the false paradigm means returning to the mindset of 2013, reopening Sandbox’s scope, and, if the fanbase cares enough, scrapping and redoing career.

There are two key philosophies when running a community:
"Everyone's welcome"
and
"FIFO [Fit In or Fuck Off]"

While at first "Everyone's welcome" would appear to be preferable, leading to a less toxic community and less circlejerk-y attitudes, it actually ends up wasting everyone's time. When you make a post the community doesn't like in an EW community, it is simply ignored, but you're left with a question: is it being ignored because it's annoying the community, or because it's just not very interesting? If the latter, you can keep going until you find someone who shares your interest. If the former and you keep going then the EW community will eventually seek to FIFO you while officially maintaining the EW philosophy.

By comparison, a FIFO community like 4chan often ends up tolerating more unusual opinions since the effect of "Kill yourself" posts is very limited anyway, especially when users are anonymous instead of pseudonymous. You can get quick feedback on what the community thinks of your views without worrying that they're just being polite.

EW communities replacement of an overt signal of disapproval seeks to make the community look good to the detriment of those not desired and ultimately to the detriment of the community itself as it becomes an increasingly cliquish circlejerk that chokes out new blood by ignoring their posts and personalities in favour of old established bloodlines. Compliments are nothing without insults to provide contrast. When someone in a FIFO community like 4chan approves of your post, you generally know it's because they approve and not because they're giving the minimum reply necessary to be polite. [Sometimes while not "0 replies" ignored, you end up getting generic replies by those trying to look polite.]

This isn't really related to "loving each other" on KSP at all. It's just the easiest excuse to type this out since I thought of re-purposing the FIFO acronym while lying in bed.

But even mario paint confuses me. It's not like drawings, with drawing you can bash together lines and pixels to vaguely say "This is a plane"

It's not the same with sounds. You can't just bash together coins, ships and yoshis and say "This tune evokes a busy city area in a game", it doesn't work that way.

Even programming is easier. You can bash together all kinds of unholy messes of if... then... statements and GOTO lines and still come out with a program that runs 50% of the time. not so with sound.

and then there's the tutorials. there's less jargon in official space-shuttle hardware manuals than there is in the simplest of music-creation tutorials [and it's rarely clear that's even what they ARE.]

I'm watching Jurassic World and early on Jeff Goldblum's character says "it's not a game", referring to the coverup of the original catastrophe. That resonated with me, because it's how I feel about KSP.

Sure, the point is to make a game, but instead the people steering the ship have focused on turning the development itself into a game. Lying about features, changing features, secret features, missing features, Squad develops by fiat, and that methodology is by design. Fascism has been praised by official Squad representatives on official Squad channels.

Yet the model that incentivizes them to continue development is based on somewhat democratic principles. Early Access isn't supposed to be distorted into the model Squad used to make KSP. As the millions piled up, they should have planned for a way to care for the community after they "finished" the "game". The impact of their laissez-faire approach is the fragmented and mob-like community we currently inhabit a small corner of.

We occupy a position of power due to the nature of our forum, yet also because we remember the days of .18, and we ache for them again. There was a time when the idea that things could turn around seemed possible, but months after a trainwreck prerelease of a year-long engine overhaul that destroyed all of 1.0's polish, which itself took 8 months, predated only by exploding buildings, which implemented the code infrastructure for upgradeable buildings, a career-only mechanic, the sense of hope has diminished. Oh, and 1.1 is unplayable for many, like myself.

And I haven't even touched on the console versions. Which will have a release date published soon. Or maybe they'll even just come out with no warning, then be quickly disregarded by squad when the 'oldfag' PC fanbase rebels.

I was at a public memorial place today, for a little girl that had drowned in a small river by our town. Everyone lit candles and put down flowers while the parents were mourning among them. Last week, I saw an internet celebrity related to our general thread at my local Wendy's - none other than Scott Manley, AKA Hullo.

I was going through the drivethru. I don't normally eat fast food, but I was happy to break that rule when I recognized the driver in front of me as him. I listened in to hear what someone such as Scott Himself would order to fuel his engine.

"I'd like 2 triple *mumble* meals, an asiago french redhot chicken fiesta bowl, bacon wrap, fresh fries, two large *mumble* no ice..." He went on like this for a few minutes, sometimes mumbling, sometimes speaking loudly and quickly. He got very agitated when the person taking his order misheard parts of it.

Due to the confusion, I couldn't hear what all he got, but I did hear the end total - $74.29. It seemed like an awful lot of food for one person.

I ordered a single chicken sandwich, no drink, from the clearly exasperated fast food girl. In the background of her mic and around the side of the building, I could hear Scott speaking loudly and concisely. "Second window, please." the girl taking my order sighed.

I rounded the corner in time to see Scott offering his debit card to the window, only to pull it away from the hand that emerged to accept it. He then laughed hysterically for all of a second, then quickly said "Enjoy the food, bitch!" so it echoed through the parking lot adjacent to the building, peeled out and left the bags and bags of food on the drivethru window's shelf, unpaid for.

The understandably upset drive thru girl, flanked by a miserable looking manager-type, practically threw my sandwich at me. An oversized black woman complained loudly in the background about "Fuckin' creeps that come through this time of night" to complete to scene, as I drove off.

I think I am gonna do a quick physicspost before I go to bed.

You guys may know that it is common consensus that the size of the universe is infinite. How does this make sense? Actually, eh... it doesn't, but that is what makes physics so exciting. Math was built to make logical sense of our universe. Math is nothing but a set of assumptions that uses the rules of logic to come to conclusions. If the original assumption is wrong then the conclusion is wrong, but we are pretty damn sure our original assumptions (axioms) are correct so everything that we derived from them must be true.

Anyway, what does this have to do with the size of the universe? Well, since we cannot travel to the "edge" of the universe, we must infer based off what we already know. I will not focus on the proper derivations so I am gonna gloss over a whole bunch of shit and jump right into the Friedmann equations, which are derieved partially from einstein's field equations.

The equation I am talking about is attached (shamelessly stolen from wikipedia). Now wtf does this equation mean? Lets go over it piece by piece:

H = the hubble constant. How fast the universe is expanding at any given time. We can break down H even further into (a'/a)

a = the average distance between galaxies. since we cannot measure the overall size of the universe, this is all we got to go on
a' (or the a with the dot on top) = the change in the average distance between galaxies

a'/a basically tells you how much the universe wants to expand on its own, which gets up back to the hubble constant.

The second part is explains the force of gravity on the entire goddamn universe. I would suppose that most of you know what G is, but p represents the density of the universe. The more dense the universe is, the larger the force.

Actually lets require the equation so it is (a'/a)^2 - (p*8*pi*G/3) = -kc^2/a^2

In this new format you can more easily see that the gravitational pull of the universe is directly competing with the expansion of the universe. Now what is that funky part that is -kc^2/a^2?

Well, I already told you what a is, and you should know that c is the speed of light, but what is k? Well, if you have taken any calculus III course you should know that stands for curvature. Look at the attached image. If k>0 we get positive curvature, k<0 is negative curvature and k = 0 is flat (or no) curvature. Simple stuff.

With this knowledge we can simplify things even futher:


(expansion of universe) - (gravitational pull of universe) = -k*(some change)

This equation alone gives you insight on what the shape of the universe should be. The value of k is determined by what the left side of the equation evaluates to. If the left side of the equation is positive then that means the expansion of the universe is greater than the gravitational pull of the entire universe. We get an open, negative universe. In this case, the universe will be infinite.

If the left side of the equation is negative, that means gravity wins and we end up with a positively curved universe. This universe is a finite spheroid that closes in on itself.

If the left side of the equation equals precisely 0 that means the the curvature of the universe is 0 and we live in a flat universe. This is another infinitely large universe

Now, we have measured the shape of the universe by measuring distances between points in the cosmic background radiation. We know how far the radiation reaches (observable universe and all) so we can triangulate earth with two points in this background radiation to see if our space is curved. If the distance is larger than we expected then the universe has positive curvature, less is negative, and if the distant is exact we have flat curvature.
