Tomes? No, Tomes have always been around and finally having them play nice with the rock-paper-scissors game helps prevent magic being downright stupid like it was in Awakening.

Hidden Weapons fill the gap that the other two ranged weapons leave, they're a physical ranged weapon that is weaker than bows but usable in melee range - I suppose it's also thematic that Ninjas > Mages.

They are however slightly over-tuned. Their place in the weapon triangle gives them an advantage over swords and katanas which already gimps a few classes in particular - but the stat drops are just icing on the cake.

If Hidden Weapons didn't have the potential to hit so hard the stat drops might be more warranted but given how powerful Ninja are in Fates it just seems like surplus power - especially compared to some of the downsides certain Tomes have.

Old fire emblem games objectively have better stories characters, mainly because they didn't have as much focus.

Old fire emblem had a more epic focus where the story was about geopolitics and nations fighting other natons, and the actions of your group could be more or less done by anyone and the story would be the same. This is a lot harder to screw up because everything is by definition a lot more shallow.

In new fire emblem self insert characters dominate the entire plot, the stories are way more personalized and the scale is a lot smaller. Since you focus so hard on the characters using this method if you suck at writing it shows really strongly

Compare how manaketes used to dress to how tiki dresses and they don't even look like they belong in the same series, everyone has suffered from the same overdesign fasion model desease that's plagued almost every long running japanese series

Compare how many more joke/gimmick characters there are in new fire emblem vs the old, there was some silly stuff in the old ones but there wasn't a farmboy wearing a pot as a helmet slaughtering entire armies

Older games had character relationships but it wasn't this fucking cringe inducing pure love waifu stuff that reads like it's from a shoujo manga, it was a couple lines of characters saying they like eachother and then the game ends saying "x and y married"

Older games had lots of cute girls slaughtering dozens of armed male soliders but those cute girls didn't wear boobplate armor or walked around in a bikini, they wore stuff that wouldn't look out of place in dungeons and dragons (or, like the other guy said, an 80's anime inspired by D&D)

This is what people mean when they say the new games are different, it's not WHAT they have but HOW they do it. The old method is a lot easier to take seriously so to have it change to something much more outrageous it can feel like you had the rug pulled out from under you

Well Donnel isn't exactly strong as a pot-wearing villager, he has to reclass.

The idea behind Donnel, a farmboy who grows into a competent soldier through war over time is actually very realistic.

Thing is that now everyone is a personality and the personality is presented so it outweighs combat performance. Perviously personality was minimal and a unit's combat performance is what mattered the most. People used to defend to the death units that were highlights in their first runs even/specially if tier lists placed them low.

I for one am fucking sick of visual clutter in recent Fire Emblems. We were perfectly fine with 2D sprites/animations, and now we have all these 3D models and lighting/particle effect bullshit distracting the eye and making it hard to concentrate on strategy.

not in full agreement there. Birthright goes to shit once Ougi joins and Revelation is just horrible throughout. The mechnaics are mostly fine but that means little when the character balance and maps don't hold up. Conquest mostly hits this sweet spot but suffers from shared paralogues and its own stinkers(foxland USA).

Still, Inty Sys did prove that they can make a damn good SPRG if they tried. Whether they will continue to do so is another matter.
