Yes basically when a unit routs it turns round and flees directly away from the nearest enemy unit. you roll two or three dice for the unit and thats how far it goes. The enemy unit then gets to roll dice and if it rolls higher it destroys the unit completely.

Yeah units panicking is a core mechanic. Plus a number of spells are calculated based on the target's leadership statistic. Not sure if I'd call Leadership (in TT) the exact same as morale (in TW) though, as it's not a quality that diminishes over time. It's just being flanked or having a ton of units die at once gives a huge hit to both Leadership AND Morale.

They toned down the blood in TW games due to scale? It's good, but mostly it only uses names from Warhammer Fantasy and the rules of American Football as a mild suggestion. It's good fun and very polished in its own right but there is more RNG than XCOM and you won't come out with a better understanding of the factions in TW:WH other than the broadest generalizations (Brets rely on Knights/Blitzers, Empire is rounded but unspecialized, Dwarfs are slow but well armored, etc.). Still, good way to see more humor out of the Warhammer property.

Then your Dwarf player didn't understand how close combat works, because every unit has a hand weapon standard and ranged units use their CQC weapons when engaged. With shield and heavy armor the save on Dwarf Thunderers/Quarrellers is 4+ (meaning that if they're hit they avoid damage on a roll of four or more) and is down to 3+ when they're charged. And all of this is before all the crazy runes you can put on Dwarf units and the benefits Runesmiths add.

It can be hard to see, but the enemy only got one full unit behind our lines, and we're rushing our thureos spear flank guard from the opposite end of our line up to meet them.

We've drawn most of the flankers off with a unit of lancers, and the rest of our cav are now taking out their skirmishers.
