So I'm doing a marathon of all the souls games before 3 drops and I'm seriously considering just skipping DS2. I have never found a build or playstyle that really makes that game fun.

Start with Knight, a straight sword of your choice and then build to whatever looks fun.

You get 5 respecs per NG so it's easy to experiment and Knight really doesn't have many wasted stats for any build because of it's low Luck.

It takes ages to decrypt, it's a pain in the ass.

Many people with really fast internet connections report downloading the entire thing at launch is way faster than the decrypting process, and they are right, I only have 6 mb/s download speeds and it's still slightly faster. Steam's encryption wasn't too bad before, but now that games are 20gb or more it's getting to ridiculous levels, prepare to rage hard at the decrypt times

Hidden mechanic, I've seen purple summons to activate when I've invaded as a red, but only very rarely. Mound Maker's are weird. You ever noticed sometimes when you summon one, there's a magical puff of smoke that happens with no idea what happened?

Sometimes you invade via sign as Mound Maker, and the enemies don't attack you. Other's, they do. Sometimes invading with Orb makes the pve hostile as well.

There's some strange shit going on with that covenant. My theory is that there's some kind of hidden gravelord like mechanic to it that no one knows about yet. Like maybe if a mound maker had been in the hosts world previously and died, mound maker signs will become visible to any reds in that world for a period of time to summon.

Or, it's some hidden opposing covenant shit like Bloodborne, where it ONLY works if the host is in Sunbro's or Way of Blue or something as well as some weird chance.

They're purple for a reason. I believe even Blue's can summon them.

Offensive magic of any kind bar pyromancy does dick for damage until you start reaching 50+ invested in the stat

Durability is rather irrelevant to every weapon bar MLGS, which is bad anyway.

Lightning/Sunlight Spears only do damage if you have the investment stated above, and are close range (as in almost touching).

Sunlight Spear (strongest spear variant in the game) does like 1100 damage at 60+ Faith BUT ONLY if you're literally rubbing up against the enemy. the damage drops off like crazy based on distance and will only do like 300 damage to an enemy standing 5 feet from you.

Pretty good. Warden's Twinblades are awesome, both Carthus blades are fantastic, rapiers are great, reapers are good now-- it has a lot of options.

It's perfectly fine. It has a great Weapon Art and you won't have to worry about durability since it works similarly to DaSI.

FROM completely changed how you're supposed to use Lightning Spears. They deal maximum damage when shot point blank, and depreciate the further they travel in order to strike an enemy. Fortunately, talismans have a WA that gives you a brief poise boost, so I think those are intended to be used with that particular type of miracle. As for the damage, you need miracle-boosting rings and high FAI in order for them to be good. It's a huge investment, so I don't think they're really worth it. I have yet to experiment with them, so take that with a grain of salt, I guess.

As far as FAI-based weapons go, a lot of them are really good.

40/40 is what you want for a Pyromancer build and is what you need to one shot most phantoms with Sacred Flame at metagame levels, 30/30 is enough to almost kill most phantoms in random invasion tier levels.

Curved swords are okay. Not as good as DaS2 (thank god) but much more consistent than DaS1.

Curved Greatswords are outclassed by UGS and greataxes while being about the same speed. They're in the same position as Greatswords where they're as slow as the heavy-hitters, but aren't heavy hitters and struggle to compete with mashy fast weapons.

Pyromancer starts at level 8.

since i've done this before here's some tips if you want an easier time

>infuse the estoc or straight sword of your choice with Raw and use that as your primary weapon
>look up where to get the pyromancy tomes because 2 are fairly hidden and missable and without them you're not doing shit for damage with pyromancy
>at the same place as you get the Chaos Orb pyromancy tome you can get a Chaos gem which infuses your weapon to scale with your pyromancy stats like mad
>infuse your Raw weapon of choice (best options are Astora Straight Sword or Estoc) with Chaos
>don't forget to upgrade your flame, but weapon takes priority until you get chaos orb

basically you really just need to leg it to Old Izalith, which is reached from climbing down the bridge after it breaks in the catacombs, it's rather easy to not realize the bridge creates a ladder after it breaks and Old Izalith is where you find all your pyromancy shit.
