After carefully judging the situation over the years, for a successful AGDG collab, it would have to be something like this:

One mega powerhouse programmer (or Unity/Game Maker wizard) who will do EVERYTHING. As part of this classification, he has already finished/released one serious game.

Any amount of music fags.

And a game that would allow for all sorts of shitty art to piled in and it wouldn't even matter that it's piecemeal. The programmer/engine-wizard would have to handle the UI/connecting assets on his own.

AGDG would toss random shit at the project and it would mostly all get put in no matter how shitty.

Yo guys, I'm making a scifi game and I want to groups all be named after their own theme. I'll explain this with Dragon Ball terms.

In Dragon Ball, all children of King Piccolo are named after instruments. In Dragon Ball Z, all Saiyans are named after vegetables (Kakarot = Carrot; Raditz = Radish). There's tons of others.

Anyway, I was wondering what were some groups of things I can use. I thought about colors (which DB uses for the Red Ribbon Army). For example, in my game, the names of this particular group will all be named after a color.

Color -> Name

Red -> Reddo
Blue -> Buru
Green -> Gareen

Think of a group of similar objects other than food, instruments, vegetables, and colors and turn some of the objects from that group into names.

Do you mean the cutscene or the ingame texturing? The cutscenes are some top tier jap 3d anime magic. The actual ingame textures are fairly basic lowres lowpoly textures you see a lot in games on handheld and older consoles.

Man, going through the shit in the combat really taught me how useful things like coroutines are.

Thinking the white might provide too much contrast. Amplitude of the waves on the waterfall edges might be a bit much too, but whatever. Got most of the effects I wanted, just needs tuning.

Trying to speed things up and figure out what I want for the locations in my daydream RPG. I figure since it's an isometric view, people will be looking at a LOT of fuckin grass, so what do you do first? Make the grass fun to look at. Anyone who's played older games probably gets some satisfaction when they see different colors, it can make you think you're making progress, at least that's how I feel. I've had an idea for the architecture of each country for a while, but now that this very basic step is out of the way, I can figure out how to color everything else to have an appropriate palette.

I'm not even that anon, but its debatable whether theres evidence of inherited genetic advantage towards logic and reason or whether a logical "talent" is simply molded by the environment and activities during development and childhood. Maybe a kid just played with lego's a lot, maybe a kid looked at art books a lot as a kid. Neither of those are talents but you could definitely attach them to ambiently improving basic skills related to engineering and art respectively.

Whenever I here someone say "I'm just not good at writing" I can pretty much guarantee they don't read a lot.

This shit got me thinking. You guys know those cross shaped poles that technic legos have? I could always tell their length just by looking at them but my friends would compare them to the templates on the instructions to figure out which they were.

Though this probably has nothing to do with my programming skills or talent if there is any but maybe it has something to do with my ability of perceiving 3d space?

I do remember that math was always effortless to me even back in elementary school and once I got to studying programming I progressed so fast that I'd help my fellow students in class because I was so fucking bored. I've always felt that I never had to do any work when it came to math or programming though.

As you said, all of this could have to do with how I grew up instead of me having talent for this shit.

With the concept of "PONG with guns" being very simple, how would I add meat on the bone? I understand I won't turn this game into the next e-sport but I'd just want it to be fun enough for people to play it more than once before uninstalling.

My ideas so far are these game modes:
-Regular pong with guns (one kind of gun only, e-sport style rules to ensure fairness)
-Regular with skeletons running around the arena, shooting and killing them gives you new guns and powerups that add effects to the ball
-Dungeon mode: You spend 10 seconds between each round in a dungeon to go kill as many skeletons as you can for powerups that make your shotgun stronger and better during the next round (a little like Smash Run on the 3ds version of Smash). The guns would become crazy after a couple of rounds.
-Balancing board: The arena tilts depending on who has the ball on his side the longest (encourages faster play, get rid of it quick).
-Soul Bomb: The ball is a ticking timebomb, turning the game into a hot potato style pong, keep the ball on the other side (also, killing skeletons that are running around adds souls to the ball making it explode earlier)
-Different stage shapes (more vertical one with platforms, very wide one).

Also, since I have a working fps with enemies, I might as well add a "rape as many skeletons as you can" mode with waves and stuff. It wouldn't be too hard to code.

Someone suggested on the gamedev thread on /v/ to add unlockables, which adds a lot of motivation to keep playing in many people.

I'm not sure how I'd fit an rpg element in there though. Maybe the dungeon mode I mentioned could be made to be both a fast-paced multiplayer match AND a more permanent, slower rpg.

Having cosmetic unlocks wouldn't be too time consuming to do. I know I wanted to have a "Death's gaze" weapon which would be a machine gun, of machine guns (so a bunch of barrels rotating, who each have a bunch of tiny rotating barrels). It'd be the very last unlock of course. You could just destroy absolutely everything with it.

A sort of HORSE mode where you take turns and have to shoot the ball into a target or something in less shots than the other player

Everytime the ball is hit, it splits in 2, until it reaches the Xth generation. Whoever has the least amount of the balls in their goal wins, with larger balls being worth more.

Something like hot potato, maybe skeletons attack you while the ball is in your area, although this would be better with something like 4 players. Actually, it wouldn't be too hard to make this into a 4 player thing, but that's really enlarging the scope, so you probably shouldn't do that.

Cosmetics is a must like you mentioned, for guns and maybe the player too. You could even let players have little items or decals on their side of the arena

SHIT IDEA ZONE

Over time, parts of the floor could disappear

Cooperative modes, like having to keep the ball from touching the ground or hitting the walls while fighting some sort of boss

Is there any rule of thumb for how many nav mesh nodes I want to place in spots other than polygon corners in order to create more natural-looking paths and avoid wall hugging? Okay, redid the color on the tarnish to be a bit more brown like those images and chipped the front tooth instead.
Not sure if I prefer it with the blue/purple or the more realistic brown/orange.
Not sure if I want to change the shape on the tarnish though. I don't know how to get it really organic like normal tarnish, and not sure if I want it to be since it's still supposed to fit with the Paper Mario style which is more simplistic.

Did a ton of work on enemy behavior. This guy in particular. He more naturally responds to your different attacks now. For instance, when you try to stab him he will jump over you, then slash you in the back. Getting the timings just right is tough, but satisfying. I want the fights to require care and thought, and good strategy. I'm definitely getting closer.

I'm also looking on the look of the world. There was good feedback about some of the shortcomings in the world art, so I've been addressing that. The colors and the way the tiles connect.

There are of course a few tough things about it that you probably already know. The consistency of the textures... I'd personally stick with the very simple, flat textures. The grass and bark texture just don't fit. The consistency of the outlines... sometimes they are solid and black (the bugz), sometimes they are colored (the grass stalks), sometimes they don't exist (the rocks). If you keep everything in line with the style of the cute bugz, you are golden. They are adorable.

So I have a problem. I was working on a simple platformer to get the hang of things on Game maker steam edition and it worked well as long as I was making it and tested but every time I closed the program and began again my character would run trough walls without colliding, it would drop from platforms that were moving even tho earlier it would stay on moving platforms and move with it and other wonky shit even tho I had not changed the code.

Should I just move to some other program? Tired of this.

The artist gets to feel success for each item they finish, thats work that they have completed.

DDA is pretty gud, just turn the combat animations off and use a tileset

also use the "stable" build, the shit they added with experimentals slows the game down a lot and adds tons of inventory management for no reason. 0.3c is basically a perfect balance between menus and mashing enemies up

Maybe i will. Though similiarities end on 2d side-scrolling part with physics based gameplay. And for having it in me to finish something, my projects drop like flies, i have serious motivational problems. Gladiators managing game? Dropped. Surreal arcade with moral choices? Dropped. I believe this is also contextual, at least in some MUDs I've played. Like, new rooms get a full description, and then revisiting you get it in brief or just the room name.

More advanced directionals could make sense too, like instead of putting "n;n;e;s;w;w;n;w;w" the player should be able to essentially say "make my way over to the cave" or possibly "make my way over to the cave and stop me if I notice something of interest", obviously not in so many words, more like "g cave, alert" or something

Oh my internet went down before I saw this. Well it sounds like this game did it poorly, you could still have some kind of juice more than color without going overboard.

But maybe who cares about terminal window compatibility, require a specifically built client. I agree about leveraging the player's imagination. It does help if the world around you can actually be altered by shit, like maybe a battle in a city with some sorceror who casts darkness that covers the city and 20 other players who have nothing to do with the battle are effected, etc.

Such things can be a lot more easier done in a text medium than a graphical one.

Fair point, and I'd need some mulling to decide my opinion on that. Partly, a client would guarantee a certain user experience across the board, and features/content could be designed with that in mind. There's already a billion text MUDs that someone could fork if they wanted anyhow.

But there's something about the wall of text that turns many people away from the genre, and I'm not convinced it has to be a wall of text. I think a MUD designed alongside a modern client could be a solution.

You guys are completely missing the point.

A game with "text" only, or just text with minimal graphics is going to deter a huge amount of people, by basis that it doesn't have graphics. These people hate reading, and they will never play your game regardless of how much you simplify or remove the fluff, as long as it only has text for them it's all the same shit.

By simplifying the text you only end up turning away the few people who actually enjoy text games. These people ENJOY reading, so they'll be turned away if you don't have good or elaborate writing and instead just "X hits Y" which they can find in a roguelike or any other normal game.

No, you're appealing to history without looking forward. People read a TON of text every day that wouldn't enjoy most MUDs, I think it's because of how the text is presented.

Once you've played a MUD long enough (I don't know if you have so I'm not assuming) you get really get at skimming. It's not about people sitting down to read an e-novel. You generally aren't spending a huge amount of time doing deep reading, you build a picture of things in your head and get good at skimming. That's why it's even possible to know what the hell is going on when a big group of players is all attacking the same enemy for instance, and it's just a huge scrolling wall of text.

To say "It can't be done better because it's never been done better" is just stupid.

No, the problem really is that the text is not fun or useful for having fun. The average action game has plenty of text in item descriptions and tons of autistic fluff. It really is that the average MUD/text RPG session is 90% text that no user needs to know at the moment it is (forcibly) presented. Even for someone who ~Likes Reading~, the content they are given to read is not useful. If they wanted a novel, they would get a novel. If they wanted a real novel-game hybrid, they would get a CYOA or play a proper text adventure, not a fully-fledged RPG.


Really, there would probably be a lot more success if the text were kept to "[you/object] did the thing" and "the thing was done to [you/object]" instead of tons of fluff that does not impact the situation significantly constantly being showered on the player.

People STILL play text adventures, and there are new ones being made here and there, from traditional Zork ripoffs to experimental ones like Aisle. But if someone who wants lots to read wants to play a game, they're gonna play Aisle or Hitchhiker's Guide instead because the focus there is the reading and reacting to the reading. The focus in what anon is proposing lies outside of the text, and being text-based is just the presentation, like a game being 2D or 3D or played in an abstract space.

I think certain games, like NEO Scavenger and FTL, make a great use of text and would be unplayable without it. You can combine text adventure elements with more traditional games. Furthermore text helps you immerse yourself in the world by implying there is a world beyond the one you can actually see in the game.

also redid my camera, depending on which part of the level you're in it'll either be locked in place until you enter another room or follow the player
this will allow me to have puzzles self-contained in a screen-sized room or larger challenges in rooms that extend beyond the screen

Not exactly. Superhot is simultaneous resolution. My game is I go You go i.e. the player moves then the AI and the bullets move. The trick is planning ahead so that you are not cornered by an immense hail of bullets, dancing between them as you run ahead and kill enemies.

There's not really a story to it, it's just a puzzle game. Sometimes you can get stuck in a shitty position and so to not have to restart the entire level you can go back to your less shitty position. It's merely for convenience, not a real gameplay mechanic; in theory you could go the entire game without using it.

idk about this "fun" bullshit but both of those games are physics based games where they have some form of physics model in the game which the player needs to predicatively model in their heads, for flappybird it's predicting the arc of movement after tapping and with angry birds a more complex arc creation with the player predicting how multiple physical objects will interact.
