In terms of changes:
-Sassanid roster revamped
-White huns revamped with Avetis' sub-mod.
-tech requirements removed for the desert kingdom units (that made them not appear on your building trees until after you had unlocked them. Now they are still building-tech locked by tier, so for instance your camel cata for Himyar are T4 barracks).
-Various bug-fixes.
-White huns need further stat balancing so bear that in mind.
-I'll try and catch whatever bugs you report when I am in this topic.

Fairly sure some areas like the mid-east mercs may be a bit messy still.

Nah, that I think would involve startpos editing and some other stuff. Avetis' sub mod with the white huns will need to be updated to FOTE but when he does you'll be able to do his whole "White hun nomads or white hun sedentary faction" business.

So for now white huns will be like in vanilla, just with their new units. And because we aren't editing the startpos yet some of their starting armies begin with Germanic or Sarmatian units, but once the celts and nords are done we will look into finally editing the startpos

We're hoping for a late spring or summer release. Progress is going fairly well. There's a lot of shit we just don't get round to posting on the forum because its a lot of work. For example, the Celts are done, Galatia is done, Ptolemaic dynasty is done, Parthia is done, a shit load of UI is done, most building trees are at least planned with a lot already implemented. Family trees are done. Research is done. Shit, a lot is done, it's mostly a case of putting it all together now.

It will play quite differently on the campaign than R2 and Attila though, and it wont be everyones cup of tea. What we're doing with buildings is in way way simplifying it but in another way complicating it.

He is a really fucking pathetic human being with major emotional problems. He flipped out over a design disagreement and left the team because he felt offended. He was apologised to repeatedly but wouldn't accept it (even though no real offence was done it was just a heated debate but not even reaching 4chan levels, no insults) It was like 2 weeks ago, but he keeps coming back and bitching about different team members. Now he's saying we're probably stealing his work despite him saying its open source and we're free to use it. He says the team leader knows that we're coping it, when he really doesn't. Team leader isn't a coder and has no fucking clue, but regardless, causeless never even uploaded the file, and our new scripter is writing a new version entirely himself, which is actually better. Causeless is really butthurt over that and says he is defeated and has nothing in his life anymore. It's no issue for the mod, hardballer is our new scripter and he's already done what Causeless did and more in a short time.

I'll try, it's not my specific area of development though.

As the newer games have very limited building slots, we think its silly that a slot should represent, literally, a single building. Especially the main settlement line. Instead, what we're going for is that the main settlement line represents the status, development and level of the entire region. It's especially important when it comes to conquest, the line you choose to go down will make all the difference, such as the region being an ally, a client state, a colony, or just your own new land. Upgrading also means a lot. We don't want settlement upgrading to be easy like it normally is. What we want it to represent is more of a level of civilisation, of national development. Kind of like in Age of Empires where you go from Bronze age or Iron age, though not that extreme, upgrading the main settlement will probably be locked behind quite a bit of research and probably some other objectives needed. For this reason units are recruited from the main settlement line as well, so there won't be a barracks building. For other slots we haven't worked everything out yet but again we want to be of a much larger scope and scale than simply building a farm or potters hut. Probably more like different development paths such as Industrialisation, farming province, etc.

Their early trash unit, the freemen, literally beat all those Roman spear units you'll meet early on and they're dirt cheap to recruit

And all their late infantry have throwing axes that can easily get 10-20 kills on the first throw against most heavy armoured units

Thanks. I'd like to do it for other factions/cultures but since it takes a lot of work I'm going to need to triage who has higher priority and also risk diluting the diversity in some ways - like there are separate Himyarite, Tanukhid, Lakhmid generals (18 of each, and each one of those 18 need 3 or more versions) so I might just do a "Arab" version. Likewise although the Germans clearly deserve the general reskins the most there are so goddamn many (something like 8, again with 18 each and each one of the 18 needing 3 versions). I could divvy it up into a West German and East German but that might run the risk of a Frankish king and Alamanni General looking the exact same.

With the Roman generals I'm not sure if they really need it because they already look pretty good and all I could really do is mix in some Last Roman helmets and change their body armor but you wouldn't probably have mail-veiled and cataphract masked Roman generals. Maybe add in some trimmed beards for your Stilichos and Aetiuses.

I've never heard anyone else complain about this so maybe I'm just basic as fuck but I found carthage to be impossible to make war with early game while every other faction was easy as fuck to kill off. I still haven't played more than 150 turns in DEI because I always get frustrated with my constant stalemate against carthage.

It's literally an endless cycle of taking and losing the same settlements over and over when I try to play against them.

I think, and I'm not to sure, but if you try to pull out a unit that is losing an engagement they will just be slaughtered as they try to leave combat showing their backs to the enemy. Anyways I seem to be doing good here, the main spaghetti line holding their infantry, sending my cav against their javelins, my velites being pummeled by their cav, soon sending one wing of my cav to help them.

Its about the most organized and solid skirmish battle I've fought so far with melee, ranged and cav together, kinda fun when it doesn't break apart so quickly

Managed to annihilate their cav now by a renewed charge from my two right wing cav and my generals cav.

My rear flank is secure

And I managed to use my left wing cav to pummel a unit outside of its line, retreat that cav and follow up with a second unit and their entire unit was wiped out

That was thrilling, most cav tactics I've done yet, they require a fair bit of micro though so its good that my infantry still holds the line well

IIRC an update made spaghetti lines less effective in Attila, so if you want to play without them, for effectiveness or just to avoid cheese, here's how to be a true understander of tactics:

1. Make a line out of your infantry. If you have 10 infantry, make the straight line at least 6 units wide, have one at each flank possibly curved inward (if you're outnumbered), and two in reserve. With experience you'll know when to diverge from this pattern.

2. Missile infantry in front of the line. When the enemy charges any units at them, pull them back quickly, especially if they charge cav.

3. Cav on the flanks. If the enemy has cav superiority, hold your own cav back until they waste some of their cav charging your infantry (archers are great bait - the enemy keeps charging even after they pull back behind your infantry line, and gets wrecked).

If you have cav superiority, try to rout the enemy cav with your own ASAP, avoiding their missile infantry because cav drop like flies if they don't have armor.

4. Wait for the enemy infantry to hit your own line. Only ever break your line to charge if the enemy has missile superiority, and is sitting back and firing at you instead of charging.

5. When the enemy infantry line meets yours, move your cavalry to take out their archers.

6. Once their archers are down, hit their infantry in the back with your cav. The battle is now won.

7. Every now and then, take a look at your infantry line. If one of your units breaks or is about to break, move in a reserve unit. If one of the enemy breaks, and opens up a gap in their line, move one or more of your own infantry units through the gap, and hit the enemy in the back.

The key to winning is to always try and hit engaged enemy units in the rear with any free units that you have. The old hammer-anvil. The entire point of the complex cav movement is to make sure that the enemy cav and archers can't hit YOU in the rear when you encircle.

I'm feeling fatigued and slower in response after like my 5th full skirmish battle today, but at least this time I managed to use the missile infantry properly and made sure they retreated behind my infantry before the enemy hit, and now they're a much needed help against their cav.

Something similar to that played out, the enemy broke their ranks way quicker than I though, the whole line routing from right to left it was beautiful

Still no total victory in any of my skirmishes yet but I'll take this over phyrric. I learned that keeping your missile infantry safe and not wasting them at the start of the battle and keeping them too far from your melee infantry is much better, they were a huge help against enemy cav.

This was my best battle yet but I'm too tired for more today.

Damn fun game. Not looking forward to campaign mode though, since it felt a lot like Civ V last time I played in prologue.

If you can defeat their cav, lock them with some your men and then take the rest to hit them from behind.

If you have shittier cav and don't outnumber them significantly, then either run your cav out and deny them a fight, or pull your cav behind your infantry lines. Then use any spare infantry to kill their cav once they get locked in melee.

If their cav is still free when you go to take out their skirmishers and archers, then you're probably going to get charged by their cav while trying to rout their ranged infantry.

If you're facing the Sassanids with 10 cataphracts and 4 crossbow cav, curl up in a hole and hope for a swift death. I can advise how to defeat them but its more hit and miss

Your main concern is that flanking troops aren't hit in the rear themselves. If the enemy is marching reinforcements to the line battle, or has units sitting off in reserve, it's best to hold off and/or engage those units before pulling the hammer off on the main line.

Unless you think you can rout the line first. I've pulled off that gambit a lot and won.

If it's just missile troops sitting back behind the main line, then use one unit of infantry to chase them, and use the rest to flank the main line. Missile troops will just keep running from your infantry instead of firing, so if you have free cav elsewhere, they'll have time to come and wipe their missiles.

If you're still having a hard time, I could share one of my old replays. I have one saved that perfectly illustrates what I'm talking about.

I think about it way too much sometimes.

I command it in Total War, I experience some of it directly with Warband but I will never fully know the experience and how it feels, not sure if I want to either, its viscous and bloody but what a spectacle it must be, to be part of such a massive force, to engage in battles along miles of terrain, how frightening it must be to see your line thinning and more and more of the enemy as the troops in front die and suddenly you're in the front.

Thanks anon but I understand what you mean, I even took that approach I think, I remember charging at the missile troops with the reverse force, and cavalry further in the rear, they started running, I switched the reserve to go pancake the unit in the rear line and let the cavalry deal with them, and send the second reserve unit in to pancake the middle line.

I was lucky in the my right flank was clear of the enemy thanks to my velites doing their work and I just moved them in to assist the middle, cav dealing with the other missile infantry in the rear and the enemy line routed like dominoes, it was the first time something like that happened to me and it was great to witness.

But yes, Sassies are a fucking nightmare. The AVERAGE stack is:

1 general (heavy cav with bow)
1-2 onagers
1-3 elephants
6-10 heavy/very heavy shock cav
4-6 ranged cav, usually crossbows but sometimes normal bows if the stack has been wrecked recently
4-6 infantry, usually including at least 2 armored archers

I have yet to figure out how to win against them. I can defeat them reliably, but usually I end up with almost as many casualties as them.

What I do is camp the edge of the map, build a wall of shieldwall/testudo infantry next to it, and then put all my ranged units behind it. Cav might go behind it, or wait far away, depending on how likely the enemy is to charge and kill them before attacking the infantry.

I "win" by focusing massed archer fire on their elephants before they hit my line, and after that, any ranged cav. in ~30 seconds you can down a unit of savarans if you have 4 archers firing flaming shot at them.

They almost always break my line somewhere, what with elephant and cataphract charges, but somehow I always find a way to outmicro them with my cav and miraculously spared infantry. They don't have that much staying power because they use hardly any infantry, so if you hold onto 3-4 free melee units after all their cav has charged into your line, you can usually start flanking them.

I only win my campaigns against them because they seem unable to recover quickly from defeats. In one turn I defeated 5 Sassy stacks when they attacked me, and even though I lost half of all my deployed forces, I was still able to blitz and take all of Mesopotamia without them fighting me in another field battle for the rest of the war.

Don't neglect melee. Yari katchi will completely fuck gunpowder units and can make enemy units regret trying to climb the wall in your fortresses, and cavalry can rush cannons.

I learned a lot about Shogun 2 by watching Heir of Carthage. He's retarded in regards to the campaign, but he seems to have the basics down in regards to the actual battles. There are probably better choices that someone here could point you to.

I like to think about alternates to Rome - other city-states that could have been the basis for a universal culture in the Western world.

Massilia and Syracuse are interesting, as both are in great geographic positions - Massilia is more or less ideal for a Western Med capital, and Syracuse for ruling both halves.

And imagine if Greek was spread as the language if imperium across the entire Mediterranean - a lot of the East-West distinction that later arose would have been significantly lessened. There would be one language only of culture and politics from Persia to the Atlantic.

I went with Massilia over Syracuse, because I like the idea of using some Celtic barbarshits mixed in with my elite Greek phalangitai.

We have to defend Genua against Ligurian rebels, but that's the least of our worries for now.

Rome is surely amassing her forces to the south, and I saw her send out a fleet into the Western Med.

Meanwhile to the west, our campaign against the Volcae has failed miserably. We fought a valiant retreat back to Massalia, but our general, faction leader, and an entire army were crushed, as we underestimated the size of the Volcaean army.

We can only hope that the Arverni don't take Tolosa before we can, or else our expansion to the west will be limited until our non-aggression pact wears off.

One reason I'm not big on doing that myself is that politically it's a little underwhelming. You could do four, even five or possibly sixth Roman states - it depends on the exact date in the 300-313 or so but:

-Vicarius Alexander holds North Africa in rebellion to Maxentius
-Constantine holds Gaul and Britain
-Maxentius holds Italy, the islands and Spain. Could lose Spain if set in 310 to Constantine.

Yep, definitely a good idea to just start preparing instead of starting over. Thankfully, I saved right before I made the invasions that pushed me over the realm divide.

I'll try to have three full armies (shitty units get scrapped, better units in), three full navies (one army and one navy staying near the back line to clean up any potential mess-ups; they'll start by taking out the two pro-emperor neighbors that I've been trading with while my other two armies and two navies), castles in every town with resources (in order to oppress the populace; they're pretty pissed about those resource buildings, and I'm going to lose the ishin shishi), and to get the invasion in full swing by 1868, which should be more than enough time to meet the victory conditions.

Anyone have suggestions?

Also firing timing and mechanics are more important than in TW. For example theres like 3 zones of firing range, if you hold off until the closest you will devastate the enemy but maybe at a price, or fire too early and they will get you worse.

It's a damn shame a feature of MTWII isn't around, where in MTWII you could make it so a certain religious percentage was required for a unit. Far as I know in Attila the unit religion requirement is probably just a flat "faction must be X religion".

For converting to another culture could you restrict it to certain factions? Pontus is the obvious choice but maybe barbarians and non Greeks/Romans/Easterners in general. I could see Iberians converting to a Latin or Punic culture whereas I don't see Rome converting to Punic or Gallic culture.

No we can do that fairly easy. Its already in DEI where you need a certain % of a culture to be able to recruit units from that culture. Cultural conversion will happen mostly through conquest, we'll probably set the faction conversation to a very high percentage.

Just that it would be impossible to have religion and culture as two separate things, so you'd/we'd have to deftly do it in such a way to have both at once. One of our team members, Avetis, is highly interested in getting Armenia working on FOTE. He may have done that mod you're referring to, I forget. Used Welsh as the nomenclature because it is the most well documented of the Bryttonic languages (We got fuck all for the Picts and it never occurred to me to use Gaelic), a quick unscientific gander had a lot of cognates in Cornish and Welsh so I am inclined to think Welsh is reliable enough to represent the Brythonic speakers of Britain and the related Picts.

Everybody gets Celtic units, the rest are split between the three. Romano-Celtic are mid-later era, as would those noted LATE era and some units I forgot to mark (Brythonic Knights inspired by the Strathclyde Britons and other cavalry oriented Romano-Britons). Picts get 10 unique, Caledonian get 7 unique & 3 shared with Irish, Irish get 8 unique & 3 shared with Caledonian.

The uncolored are units I haven't placed yet. There's three wardog options which CA had upgrading one to the next to the next. I am not sure how I want to do the wardogs - make one Pictish, one Irish, one Caledonian? What would the stat difference or appearance difference be?

Scathas Teachers I could keep as a single all-women unit but I am not sure their role. Horse Whisperers are just a leftover I could do whatever with. The "Rhynie Man" is an interesting Pictish stone depicting a tonsured fellow with a two handed axe. It's dated probably to outside of FOTE's period but does suggest a 2h axe was known before the Vikings introduced it. That could be a neat unit for the Picts since I omitted berserkers from them (my impression of the Picts is more dour and serious and not boisterous berserkers/champions like the Irish or Caledonians).

Bodyguard wise it'll prob be: Picts get the generic Celtic foot bodyguard or mounted Pictish, Caledonians get generic celtic foot or mounted Caledonian (I can't see the reason for bow-armed bodyguards. Celts aren't exactly the heroic cult of the bow), Irish get berserker bodyguard or chariot bodyguard.
