So is Empire Total War shit? Every time I try to play the units seem unresponsive and it's just a slow grinding cluster fuck. I felt like I got better gunpowder fighting from Shogun 2 and Medieval 2 compared to Empire.

What if units were more mercurial. Individual soldiers could break off to go where they wanted to fight or flee. Training, morale, and integrity would affect their ability to stay together. You could reabsorb your units/they wouldn't count as losses/etc. That would probably pave the way for more modern settings while allowing older settings to work.

What we have done so far:
- Built up the existing provinces a bit
- built up a small army in mercia (now in wales)
- hired some mercenaries


The army arrayed against the welsh is the following:

3 royal guards
2 urban militia
1 peasant
1 archers
1 mangonel
1 mounted crossbowmen

I just want experience in battle to be more important.

It's fucking stupid that experience counts for so little, and that the best way to get triple-gold units is to stack research and buildings and edicts and character traits, instead of actual battle.

Experience should work like this:

Shit-tier (negative bronze chevrons):
You rounded up some peasants and gave them a few sticks. They really just want to go home and check on the crops and make sure the village priest isn't fucking their wives. They have shit combat ability, shit cohesion, and rout ridiculously easily.

Basic normal tier (0 to 3 bronze chevrons):
The men have received some basic training. They're still going to be scared as fuck going into their first battle, but no worse than any other man in his first ordeal. Normal units can never get above this level without seeing combat - nobles and well-drilled Roman regulars can get up to the first silver chevron.

Veterans (silver chevrons):
The men have seen and lived through combat. This should be a really important milestone - they should be a lot more resistant to morale shocks, and their combat skills should increase somewhat (because they've seen the kind of shit you can't train for).

Balance-wise, they should behave like vanilla Attila units, with lower-exp units just being a lot quicker to break than they are now.

Elites (gold chevrons):

More crunch:

Levy units by default start at -3 experience, regulars at 0, nobles at 4 (first silver chevron). EXP-increasing effects should/will be rarer and more valuable, because each chevron is now much more important, and you really want to make sure that your newly recruited armies can hold their own.

Ideally, upgrading to higher tiers would require units to reach a certain level of experience. I.E. even if you've researched the next tier of spearmen, you're stuck with levies unless you have a good training infrastructure, or send those levies to battle.

Battle should drastically increase chevrons. The first sizable battle should bring you up to 3/4. Every two sizable battles should give you another silver or gold chevron, so that you only need ~12 battles to be the elite of the elite (and think about it - how often do you actually see 12 big battles with a single unit?). Possibly you should get exp even faster, because you're likely to lose some from casualties.

Just being in battle should be enough to get silver chevrons, but you should have to take part in actual combat to progress into gold. Ideally there would be a formula to assign experience, that increases it for seeing real combat, and for being in even/difficult battles (because the men who survive will have seen some shit and know they can come out alive).

tl;dr make experience way more important, and make it actually fucking reflect the experience of our units in battle. An army of greenhorns should be easily routed by my hardened army of FEARSOME SPEARMEN who have been fighting their way across Europe for 10 years.

What would have been great for the migrators in Attila, is to start with a small core of men from your base tribe, but as you migrate across Europe and win battles, attract people from other tribes and form a hodge-podge. To make up for unit losses, you'd get a unit pool to replace every unit you lost, and eventually when you settle down, you unlock one or two unique units from each member of the barbar melting pot.

So, the Thracian falxmen that the Goths get would be available to any faction that spends time fighting in the southern Balkans, and if you fight non-hun horsefuckers you get some Sarmatian units (because people who had sworn allegiance to the enemy group will want to turn over to you).

So I've barely touched Attila even after I picked it up at Christmas and had a look around. It felt promising, at least compared to R2. Gonna jump into it properly now.
I'm aware of The Last Roman and Charlemagne packs, going to save them for later. Are any faction DLCs actually worth it? Only Empires of Sand seem so by roster. Or does a specific location of another pack yield a uniquely interesting campaign?

And are there any mods I should consider that aren't in the pastebin? I think I have one that makes the AI settle(because they apparently do not?)

Just thinking ahead is there anything I should have in mind when I work on the Celts and Nordics from people's play experience with them? Units people really like with them or ones they really don't like?

Much like with the Himyarites I will probably be sacrificing autismal authenticity to keep some 2h axemen around for the Danes. At least from a vague historical know-how my impressions for the Nordics was going to be: Saxons and Angles with the best nordic spears, Geats with the best nordic cavalry, Danes with still the whole naval orientation and them and perhaps the Jutes getting 2h axes. It won't be bare bones exclusionary like in AoC for the most part - Saxons will still get a cav or two, Geats will still get spears, but hopefully stats and such will allow for some flavorful distinctions.

Well, I really really enjoyed the skirmisher-heavy warfare of the Ebdani. Even if it's ahistorical, their best unit being an armored skirmisher with 15 ammo was a really cool thing to aim for.

Also, can we please please please see chariots on at least one of the Celt factions? Even if it's probably bullshit by this date, that alone would be enough to make me go back to them.

What I did was conquer/raze/subdue the Norse, while slowly pushing into Iberia. But Hispania arose as a strong faction and drove me out. I didn't have much of Gaul, but I used diplomacy to keep the situation safe.

Then the Huns came, I won 2 battles and signed peace. I couldnt advance into Iberia because they were at the Pyrinees.

I was making 12k gold every turn because I was using few armies and I had 70k in treasury. So, I send the Huns gifts and waited for them to invade Iberia.

but at that point, there were literally no enemies left in Northern Europe and now my campaign is boring. Don't do what I did, anon

Technically speaking the evidence points to the Irish being the most ass-backwards militarily of Europe. And quite frankly I think even Ethiopia and Nubia were more advanced militarily than the Irish at this point. Then again with the Irish 'warfare' being perhaps more bark than bite nobles posturing and dueling a'la the Greek dark ages or and archaic period (And cattle raiding) rather than rampant rape and pillage and destruction maybe they were militarily backwards but culturally better off.

That being said because that kind of depiction would be boring as sin, and because we already take creative exceptions elsewhere to improve the mundaneness of real battle I'm liable to try and abide by the maxim of historically inspired and influenced but not imitative with the Celts and Nordics.

It's a shame because while the dark age and medieval Irish were also still primitive they had a much more flavorful theme to them - an immense association with axes from the Norse's influence. The "War of the Gaedhil with the Gaill listing the equipment of the Irish army at Clontarf tells us that kings, chiefs, and leading warriors had broad-bladed lochlann (viking) axes for cutting and maiming the close, well fastened coats of mail their viking foes wore." (Battle in 1014). "The Irishman and his axe (adopted prior to this [12th-13th cent] period by Scandinavian influence) were inseparable, it being carried everywhere even in peacetime". And then you have the Islesmen or Gallogliach who looked cool and would provide a valuable bulwark.

But that would all be way too ahead for these Irish. That being said -

After the Huns start coming out in full force, activate a mod that disables razing.

You can still capture and abandon settlements yourself, but it stops Europe from permanently dying.

I also like using a mod to give the WRE, ERE, and Sassanids insane public order. It keeps them as challenges well into the game, although the WRE at least still loses a lot of land.

I figured my approach to the Irish would be their Berserkers and wardogs are the best. Let them have that Morrigan berserker bodyguard unit, give them an armored berserker champion unit, maybe berserker spearmen too. Shit, I wonder if Berserker javelinmen would work? Probably going a bit far there. I suppose armored javelinmen is not unfeasible as it keeps with that heroic champion-oriented fighting of the Irish. I've been told by an Anon here and looked elsewhere that the Irish never used any chariots, and also that they had no cavalry. Could throw them a bone with 1 light jav-cav but otherwise they definitely lose the cavalry emphasis (which goes to the picts).

Was partial to give chariots to the Caledonians, along with still keeping their archery emphasis and maybe giving them more of those old school celtic type warriors - bare chested charge swordsmen. Quite frankly at this point they were probably subsumed by the Picts so their presence is already anachronistic.

Picts - the earliest (but later than Attila) indigeneous art predominates with javelin light cavalry, bowmen often with a sniping look about them, and spearmen who sometimes wield spears two handed. So they'll get the Ebdanian's vanilla cav, the only ones who get Xbows of the Celts, only ones who get pikemen (short pikes, not the long sarissa pike).

But I like the idea of uniting Britain and not pissing off anyone else in Northern Europe, then just leisurely fucking around in the Med. No risk of invasion, no stress, just fucking shit up at your own pace.

I made a mistake in my own Ebdani campaign, and kicked out some Jute squatters violently. Half of northern Europe declared war on me, and I wasted 50 fucking turns fighting off Burgundians and Varinians invading Britain, and then trudging off to the Baltic to wipe them out of existence to stop the raids.

Personally I'd fucking love a really, truly different Ireland. At least for the early game, everything should be ass-backwards, with shitty raiders and light infantry, and maybe light raider cav and light chariots (if it gets mentioned in Irish literature centuries later, it's remotely plausible, right?). Give them good attack stats and morale but poor armor, and give them loose unit cohesion. Sort of like the Picts are supposed to be in vanilla - you really have to rely on positioning and routing enemy units before your fragility starts to show.

Nothing playable will be truly historical anyway, but I think it'd be better to take advantage of their distinctiveness even if in a somewhat meme-y way, rather than just make them another vaguely Germanic-looking barbar faction with heavy infantry and axes.

But for the late game, it's plausible that the Irish, if they went out conquering across Europe, would begin to take a few notes from everyone else. So halfway down the tech tree, let us start unlocking stuff inspired by the later Norse-Gaels.

Roll up, hit London or even an inland city and already be halfway to the coastline before your turn ended.

I think you should just treat the Caledonians as a southern sub-group of the Picts, for design purposes. IIRC even the flavor text in-game implies that's what they are by now.

A distinction between cav-heavy north Picts and bow-heavy south Picts would fit well. Maybe give the crossbowmen to the Caledonians? Being on the border with Rome, southern Picts would be more likely to have advanced stuff like that, and it fits into their ranged focus more. Could also give them a few more units inspired by contact with the Romans.

So, in general, how about:

Ebdanians - primitive early units, Norse-Gael late units
Picts - as you described, with a cavalry focus.
Caledonians - just as Picts, with a ranged focus.

I really like the thought of feeling the Celts changing over time, from historically backwards to being more in-line with the rest of Europe. Don't feel bad to make ahistorical late-game units, and if you give Norse-Gael stuff to the Ebdani, it would also be good to come up with some cool-but-plausible high-end units for the Pict factions.

You could tie the most anachronistic/implausible shit into the special buildings that have to be unlocked by achievement. Especially the one that requires you to win 3 heroic victories - it'd feel awesome to do that, and then unlock some bullshit Radious-tier CELTIC CHARIOT CROSSBOWMEN

...fuck, I really want that now. What with you taking out Savarans, I won't get to experience the bullshit that is crossbow cav any other way.

Glancing over that it seems to find all the chariot relics outside of Ireland, but that Irish medieval myths and legends abound with chariot references. The legal reference about chariotry is rather selling for me because it's a more mundane and real-world reference. That being said it also is one of a civilian context. I may have forgotten what the anon meant and he may have argued that chariots weren't used in a military capacity.

The thought of that made me chuckle good and hard.

If it's possible, make one for the Persians pulled by elephants, and call it the Savaran Memorial Crossbow Chariot.

I do wish we could see them as special easter eggs in the vanilla mod, or in a side mod that doesn't really tell what it contains. The idea of people looking for or stumbling upon this stuff sounds really cool.

For example, just edit "carrot" in the localization to "chariot", and have the tech unlock meme chariots on the Bard's Hall building. The same thing that prevents me in my Tanukhids game from seeing what units are unlocked by techs before I've researched the tech.

I'm playing Medieval 2. I captured the faction leader of Venice and ransomed him off for ~12000 florins.

I just captured him again and the ransom is still roughly at 10000. I'm the wealthiest nation currently, and I can barely scrape up 3000 a turn. Will the AI just keep finding a way to produce thousands of florins, or should I just execute the faction leader or milk the 10k?

Archers>Katana Infantry>Spearmen Infantry>Horsemen>Archers.
Monks : more deadly, more fragile.
Samurais : okay.
Ashigarus : cannon fodder even with good matchup.

You also have Naginata and Nodachi infantry, they're harder to use. Naginata Samurais are supposely versatile between katana and spear infantry, but end up sucking, and nodachi infantry is practically horseless horsemen, minus the melee resilience. They'll die very quickly and are only good to charge.
You also have the heroes, but you'll never use them.

Armor always matters, you definitely wanna have as much of it as possible.

Depends on if you think it is something that will complement your play style, for instance bonus to cavalry is useless if you are all about spears and bows.
Also keep in mind the cost, you don't have infinite money.

I think in Shogun 2 armor mostly helps decide if a missile attack hitting the unit will kill it or not.
It could be taken into consideration when the game calcultes who is going to win in a 1v1 fight since units will fight till someone gets 1 hit and dies, in MTW2 units would take multiple hits until a critical hit would finally finish them off, armor would help determine how much damage a hit would deal based on the attackers weapon type and general strength, MUCH more depth.

But yea dont pay too much attention to armor, the best defense against missiles is killing the Archers or using loose formation.
If you want to build stuff like these encampements that give bonuses then its better to do that in a city that has a blacksmith.
its better to dedicate 2-3 cities in strategical cities to military production like that and the rest to economy.
That way your units have better weapons/armor and are better trained.

Something you should know is that, well you probably noticed after conquering some cities that the Shogunate starts to "note" you.
Once you hit the second last level of that stop conquering land entirely and set your taxes to the lowest point so that the economy can grow in your cities, let them grow for like 30-40+ turns because once the Shogunate sees you as too dangerous he will make everyone else declare War on you, even your allies, so you will need the money.

We probably won't ever know. I think the Medieval Kingdoms mod for Attila is a close as we're going to get. It looks great desu so I'm not complaining.

The only complaint you could make about third age is it doesn't really follow the story at all and timeline of events are kinda weird.

What I really like about it is when you attack or defend somewhere almost every settlement is unique. I can't play vanilla med2 campaigns anymore because i'm tired of the same castle battles all the time.

Is it bad I want a bunch of customizable independent factions that start out as a horde like Chaos? Rogue Necromancers, Chaos Dwarf Raiders w/ Slaves, Strigoi Ghoul Kings, Beastman Warbands, Ambitious Mercenaries, etc.

It's nowhere, because they haven't released any information about mercenaries yet. The point is that it doesn't make any sense to have Blood Dragons on the Vampire Counts unit roster. Everything on that roster is a necromantic minion of some form, with the exception of Varghulfs which are feral monster vampires. It doesn't make sense to keep them as faction units when they have their own motivations for fighting separate from Mannfred's anyway.

It's that high because the city has recently been conquered, see the "Conquest (next turn only)"

Repair the buildings for another +3 from the "Devastation" part and "Instability -5" will tick down over the next five turns

Probably what it evolved from, similar to boar spears. But in actual Japanese foot combat you would use those blades to bash downwards into your opponent until an opening let you make a proper stab. Of course it would work great to stop a samurai's horse in its tracks, but usually they weren't stupid enough to charge into one.

How is that a Paradox fanboy. Both are equally shit with DLC. Capcom sells you a bunch of on disc DLC and Paradox sells you basic art and music assets that should be in the base game.

Their out there to put good products, it's just their flagship franchise is a bitch to make. Total War games are some of the most demanding games out there, it's not easy to get a dev to fucking fund such a huge money hog.

Look at Alien Isolation, that was a fucking good game, CA did a great job on it, mainly because a game like that has no where near the drain on resources something like TW:Attila. Also, we already know the missing units are going to be FLC that ships along the new LL for all the factions.
