I've avoided potentially reading spoilers for the last few months and just got a chance to play and beat the game very recently.

Is online play a crucial part of the experience? Haven't done any of it yet.

Also, how did you guys feel about the fact that you've been playing as some schmuck and not the actual Big Boss? Kind of diminished some of the significance of what happened and made me feel a bit hollow.

Sprinting fucking ruins bounty hunter for infiltrators
Anyone with a brain realizes someone is sprinting after them via minimap and you can't abuse S speed while invisible, which isn't that fast in the first place
The only time I get any fultons is after someone has spotted me and decides to stop running to try to shoot me
And because there's no objectives you can't count on anyone being anywhere so you can't plan an ambush or creep up on anyone who's not already fighting

Saw online earlier today, opinions? Good read apart from needing some cleanup which I took a stab at.

At the end of the game it’s revealed that Venom Snake is not truly Big Boss. This is false. Venom Snake is Big Boss and here’s why.

First of all, the man in bandages is a hallucination. There is a cassette tape labeled “the effects of Snake’s coma”. In it is mentioned that Snake is still feeling the effects of his 9 year coma just after waking up. So, figuring out what is real in the hospital is tricky. Anything can be hallucinated so a good way to tell if something is hallucinated or not is determining if something seen in the hospital appears later in the game. This kind of evidence can be found from anywhere except cassette tapes since Big Boss is capable of hallucinating cassette tapes not to mention entire rooms and conversations. That fact means that the scene at the very end were Ishmael rides off into the sunset and the scene were miller regards Venom Snake as he and the “real” Big Boss are falling into comas can also be a hallucination. This is all supported because at a certain point in the game it is revealed that Paz is still alive. However it turns out that BB hallucinated all the conversations he ends up having with her, AND all the cassette tapes she shares with him and the hospital room they have these conversations in. Things like quite, the man on fire, and the third boy all appear later in the game. So we know that they actually exist because later in the game the effects of Snake’s coma begin to lessen. Ishmael is the only thing that doesn’t appear later. But he does appear in mission 46 labeled the “truth”. This is the mission were the twist is revealed. Let me assure you, this mission is anything from the truth. (the on-the nose title should be very suspect)

Kojima has been quoted as saying that MGS is partly inspired by the book 1984. One of the biggest references in TPP is the year it takes place. There are cassette tapes that you receive after this mission. Many things are “explained” in this mission, but it is totally possible and likely that these were all hallucinated. However these hallucinated cassette tapes are a good way to see what is going on in BB’s head, because BB is subconsciously creating the cassette tapes. One of these cassette tapes is called “doublethink”. In the book, doublethink is a way that the government suppress the truth. This tape is where most of the things about Venom are explained. But the nature of doublethink is not knowing what the truth is. Ocelot even says “in this year 2 + 2 = 5”. This cassette tape gets less and less reputable the more you think about it. Even the fact that mission 46 is called the truth makes it more likely to be the lie, because that’s the nature of doublethink. To say one thing is the truth when it is a lie. In 1984 the main character’s job is to change old documents so that they seem to predict future events. He fabricates lies from old speeches and reports. This is the case with missions 1 and mission 46. Mission 46 is the change that happens to mission one, reminiscent of the falsified documents in 1984.

Not only that, but look at the character of Ishmael. The name is a reference to Moby Dick. In the book, Ishmael is two characters, the protagonist in the past and the narrator in the present. Ishmael can’t be the protagonist because Venom is the protagonist, so naturally he is the narrator. They are the same person, but they can’t exist in the same place, because Ishmael the narrator is older than Ishmael the character because Ishmael the narrator is telling the story about himself. This works with BB and Ishmael. So if Ishmael is the narrator and BB is the protagonist and they therefore can’t exist in the same place then this supports the idea that Ishmael is a hallucination.

There are so inconsistencies created by the end of the game. Consider this, how did Ocelot save the “real” Big Boss? He wipes his memory of Ishmael in one of the “truth” cassette tapes. It seems safe to assume that in-between getting Ishmael a ride and saving Big Boss in the van I don’t think he had time to wipe his memory and record a cassette tape. And why does Quiet want to kill Big Boss? She explains at the end that she wanted revenge for him burning her but he didn’t burn her, right? Ishmael did. This little detail made sense when Ishmael was just a hallucination. But if he was really the one who burned Quiet then why did she want revenge on BB? If Ishmael was really physically there then she would have wanted revenge on Ishmael not BB.

Finally, I’m going to talk about the last important piece of evidence. The Man Who Sold the World. The song that is originally by David Bowie, and featured in TPP. In the game it’s interpreted as there being two men. In the case of the game that would be Venom and Big Boss as individual people, when really the song is about one person. It’s about the man’s inner struggle with himself. The struggle between who he really is and the person he has sold himself as. So these aren’t two individual Big Boss’. They are the two personalities of the one man. Venom Snake is as much the real physical Big Boss as the Big Boss in the hallucination is. And once you understand this it has HUGE ramifications for the rest of the series. It explains Big Boss. He is stuck between who he has become, venom, punished, and who the world sees him as, Big Boss. He is caught between the phantom pain, and the best part of himself. So when Big Boss rides away on the motorcycle it is symbolic of the best part of Snake leaving.

is the nature of the twist itself. Pretty much everything Kojima presents is deliberate and he values the concept of the twist. The fact that people accept the body double 'twist' even though it's served up on a silver platter from not just the opening, but even the trailers (and for the hardest fans even in GZ on its own) is pretty surprising to me, especially with the triple running themes of Man Who Sold the World, Moby Dick and 1984 also included and they take expository information from sources called Truth and Doublespeak as gospel. Very weird for the MGS fanbase.

Sleep automatically makes them scatter. Smoke presents less of a danger, so using it as a direct assault tactic can be better if you're using CQC as they'd be lingering around if they're not careful.

Plus there's the addition of Smoke being used in the traditional sense as cover. For Infiltrator, it'd be key to use it properly in order to avoid gunfire or detection. It also works as a visual distraction, which will cause more attention than audio ones caused by Magazines. People will be naturally drawn to it to see what's hidden, which can be used to draw attention away from yourself. With Sleep's low density and clear gas, it doesn't provide the same stealth bonuses as Smoke. Sleep also only serves to give your position away easier. With Smoke you can be anywhere, but with Sleep you're definitely not in the gas unless you're an idiot.

This entire line of discussion was started by the question "how different would the game be if there was no falling out between Kojima and Konami or they had more time?"

And that answer is, not different at all, because the main story of the game, and all it's subplots and character arcs are fully resolved within the game, with the exception of Eli/Sahelanthropus - and we know what the resolution to that subplot was, because they gave what they had completed of it to us to watch and fill that gap. If the game had more time, we'd get that exact same resolution, just in playable form instead of watchable. It wouldn't have even been the final mission of the game, it's was another sub-plot resolving mission like A Quiet Exit but mechanically over ambitious.

Sorry, the fan fic in your head wasn't some great lost story that the game would have had if Kojima hadn't been fired. We got the story he wanted to tell from beginning to end.
