Name even a single game that does that
>>
just found out someone made a better version of my game 15 years ago. at least its as fun as i imagined...
>>
>>126717118

Which game anon?
>>
Gamemaker or Unity for a 2d game

Ori and the blind forest is really fucking gorgeous and that was made in unity so it kinda inspires me
>>
I just want to say that guy making witch game with brooms and shit you're doing a great job and never give up because I want to play that shit
>>
>>126717382
Ori was made by a full studio not 1MA, using Unity3D is pretty irrelevant.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8lOwrWNbEY
>>
>>126717382
I prefer Unity, but that's probably because I'm more familiar with it, but I dislike both the interface and scripting language of GM.

That said Unity is primarily a 3D engine so chances are it's doing a lot of stuff you wouldn't do in a 2D engine which could be a waste of CPU power, resulting in the game not running on low end systems or draining battery faster. But I doubt GM is a marvel of engineering either, it probably isn't that great in that area either.

Just like make your own.
>>
>>126717382
From what I read in the previous thread, I'd say GameMaker. Or do what feels right, seems like the previous guy didn't convince you.

vagrant story.

the idea was a story driven rpg with a heavy focus on changing equipment and spells to counter your enemies. tactics with zero hand holding. a hardcore game for hardcore gamers such as myself.

i suppose theres still some room for improvement though. but i'm sure if squeenix wanted to revisit this concept they would surprise me yet again..
>>
>>126717924

You just like make game anyways anon. There's nothing wrong with a game that borrows ideas from another, some of the best games have come about this way.

Plus your game would be on PC, which is always a huge plus for people.

>>
>>126717924
I personally want to make something like Vagrant Story just for the level design. Yes, it was pretty simple, but I find it's just simple enough to be good

Well, I love the tactics involved in making your gear too, but I wouldn't carbon copy the whole battle system. I didn't like the combos and "spam the attack button as fast as you can to land more attacks" in a seemingly turn-based combat system
>>
>>126718164
I want to make a cooler as heck system, just have to come up with a simple game around it.

Kind of leaning towards like a single player version of Evolve
>>
>>126718275
>but I wouldn't carbon copy the whole battle system. I didn't like the combos and "spam the attack button as fast as you can to land more attacks" in a seemingly turn-based combat system

And there you go, branch away from that and you'll have yourself a game people will say "Oh it's like Vagrant story but it does ____ instead." And you'll still draw people in that like your way of doing things.

>>
>>126719085
You should fix the camera look ahead. Look at how Super Metroid does its look ahead so that there isn't any of that sub pixel movement and soft snapping.
>>
>>126719085

1 for indoors and 0 for outdoors like this guy >>126719229 said.

and neat art style, though your character's walk cycle could use a little more life to it. What kinda game you making?
>>
>>126719352
it's called Full Metal God, it's an ARPG with an emphasis on skillful combat (1v1 etc, you wont survive in a 1v5 battle vs AI). You can check out our tumblr: http://kiokotadev.tumblr.com/

>>126719343
You mean rounding the x,y coords of the camera? Not sure how look ahead would be connected to sub-pixel movement
>>
>>126719640
I mean doing your look ahead in a way that isn't "lerp to the player's position plus the player's velocity times some factor". Instead the player "pushes" on the edge of a bounding area and the camera moves ahead. The bounding area also allows you to do small movements (which is probably good for your game) without the camera spazzing out.

>>126719748

It is nice to see a fun and good looking game made in construct 2. I have to make some game as a final project in one of my courses and we have to use this engine. I had a few ideas but the drag and drop workflow is killing me. I guess it is definitely easier to start working without worrying about the main physics, but some stuff looks incredibly repetitive and annoying. It doesn't help that most of the construct 2 games are utter shit and are made be kids. I don't see if the game made in it can turn out tio be good enough to make some success.
>>
>>126726298
Iconoclasts is made in Construct Classic, it's pretty much the same thing.

there's not much added though - some stuff on sound, debugging in that zombie game they have and some math
and there are some weird leftovers like "unreal engine 4's kismet system" or "content browser"(that showed the browser pre-udk)

>>126725853
>Sounds like it might be informative for all devs
it is
it's a high-level overview for lots of stuff, some math, some rendering concepts, debugging, files, localization, etc. etc., but mostly architecture, like there's this neato diagram at the beginning with every system in a typical engine
game coding complete is like this one, but goes more in depth on each thing(there's even a walkthrough for making a game, albeit with their framework)

also stop saying enginedevs like it's this special category of super devs that reinvent stuff because they are oh so much smarter
it's development either way
yeah, it takes a lot more time, but the dev himself evolves both when it comes to lower level stuff and higher level stuff(that comes with commercial engines) with his system and stuff becomes second nature to him
>>
>>126726556

Really? Iconoclasts is pretty fucking great too.

>>
>>126726627
>also stop saying enginedevs like it's this special category of super devs
Where are you getting that from?
>>
>>126726556
It looks good, I might try it. Why don't more people use this engine to make indie games or mobile apps? It even has a lot of premade logics for games like flappy bird, angry birds etc. You can literally make one of those shitty flappy bird clones in an hour. I'm interested if performance suffers a lot if you make a big game in construct and try to publish it to different platforms. That surely has to be a reason.

But I can't draw and I don't want to draw. I'm just horrible at it and it frustrates me.

I mean, I figured out the other option was to " copy " other's sprite settings to be able to do something decent myself.

But I wonder what option is the best for me. Maybe vector shit rather than pixel art is maybe better for me.

I don't think there's really a solid definition of random vs procedural. But typically procedural means it's random but follows several rules. If you know the rules you can have a pretty good idea of how something might look after it's generated. Random is "pure" random, or as close to pure random as a computer can get. It doesn't follow rules or follows very relaxed rules, so the result can be all over the place.

Random is just lazy procedural that doesn't take the time to stem its random inputs from the seed and instead uses a bunch of Math.Random()'s or whatever throughout.

I store pointers between systems only in a few places that I can control
other than that, I use new/delete in reduced, cold scopes where std vector(in case of arrays) or smart pointers are not justified

pulling in smart ptrs are not justified in lots of cases imo

I knew it when I saw the game was about birds.

And I told you. Same as with Undertale, but you never fucking listen. You are always like "B-but he cheated!" or "le meme gaem XD". Or you find some other dogmatic bullshit to apply and tell yourself that you can't make a game like this or several other ways ("le meme pixel" etc).

But it all doesn't matter. You know why?
Because he made it now. And I'm not just shittalking you here.
With Ross playing it together with Holly, chances are high that it will be played on GameGrumps too.

I don't even have to mention all those "lolsorandom" channels that will probably catch on in a few days and push sales. It might even be mentioned on pewdipies channel. I'm almost certain Markiplier will play it, since he knows Ross very well too.

So that's it. He made it. And what did you lot do? You bullied him out of here. He's probably glad he's gone.

what's real is shit

you sit here thinking that one day you will make a game and be successful but the truth is very few of us will. most of us will never reach that point due to no talent, laziness, depression, no motivation or other things in life getting in the way.

you will never live your life the way you want to. the ones here that did make it were a lucky few that happened to be in the right circumstances. it's made even clearer when you see people try their hardest and still fail, i've known people from here that spent years trying to dev and get better and at the end of the day all their progress means shit, they just accumulated a bunch of useless skills that leave them unemployable.

How time consuming is it to become competent enough in Blender to make low-poly objects and scenes? I already know some of the absolute basics.

Haven't worked on my game in a long time but I'm thinking about dropping sprites altogether and making some simple models so my game doesn't get lost in the masses of pixel shit.

For instance, what if I changed my map editor here to lay down textured 3D blocks for tiles instead of sprites? That way I could do some 3D zoom-in effects and shit.

That's okay though. There's a lot more to life than just making games.

We're called amateurs for a reason. This is not where we wake up, take our trip to some building that's a studio and work there for the day for some project we have no effect on.
Instead, we just fiddle around with our projects where we can do everything we want alone.

What would be the preferred way of modding support? I'm already storing my data in json but for scripting I was thinking of either C# or Lua.

C# - already implemented a modding interface with this before but it might not be user friendly enough and you have to recompile every time. Would also be easiest because the game is written in C# (Unity).

Lua - Easier to learn (so they say) and is a scripting language so no need to recompile.

No experience with Lua so I'll probably go with C# regardless, but just wondering if you guys have any ideas.

It's a little event where gamedevs come together and make a video game with a given theme. You're usually given a lot of time to make one (~2 weeks or more).

>>
>>126746174

you're not happy with the solution because you don't understand how c# works.

let me explain

if you type using bla1.bla2.bla3;

you're not importing anything, you're just making it easier for yourself to use the classes inside that namespace. for example if that namespace has a class called MyClass, and you want to use that class in your code, you'd type

var obj = new bla1.bla2.bla3.MyClass();

everytime you want to use that class, you have to specify all the blas in the namespace.

BUT if you use that using sentence i mentioned earlier, you can use a shortcut, something like

var obj = new MyClass();

without all the blas.

so using doesn't import anything, it's just a shortcut for you to not type all the namespaces to reach the class you want.
>>

If I want to make a simple rpg with timed button presses being a big part of combat, which game engine should I be using? I looked into RPG Maker and Game Maker, but read complaints about limitations without the users going into detail. Any friendly recommendations? Any limitations GM has probably would not effect the kind of game you're thinking of making.

RPG Maker would probably be faster from the standpoint of creating your own RPG because of the way its built, but probably doesn't offer the same freedoms GM would have, although GM would obviously require more work, especially if you plan on using its code and not just Drag n Drop (which for your kind of project, you probably would need to).

If you're committed to this, try GM. If you're not so sure, stick with RPG maker.

no midvalues is useful for lowpoly meshes, but if you have rather highpoly meshes with thousands of polys and a smooth surface, it looks pretty weird to have sudden "edges" in organic stuff. But well, how and what you do is always your choice.
>>
>>126749452
Because that isn't how skin works

Imagine the vertices going from your waist to your arm pit.
If you have 3 spine bones, the vertices aren't going to be absolutely impacted by any of them, but rather fade through each as you go upwards.
If you only used 1 or 0 and you rotated the top half of your body, you'd have a clear cut off around your nipples where the weights change, and probably another one by your belly.

It's a bit different for low poly

congrats you've reached the breaking point, and it's only the beginning.

most devs will spend a few years learning to code games and get to the point where they can, then they realize they need art. many of the devs on /agdg/ haven't even reached that part, they are still day dreaming coding their engines while thinking about the game they want to make.

>googum hates rng yet he uses them in his games
Well he did say that RNG is the worst thing to use in games and then made a rock paper scissors game. This is true. There are so many other reasons to hate him though but most of them are political and not gamedev related. For instance his public attack on AAdev which was an attempt to yet again gain notoriety through controversy alone. He did the same with with his Sandy Hook school shooting game. He's a hack.
>rotate thinks he is a superstar and he attempted to make agdg2
Also true. But at least googem has finished at least one project in his career. Rotate has never finished anything and he's been shitposting in agdg for over a year, maybe longer. He shares something in common with googem though in that he has publicly assaulted other devs outside of anonymity and thought it was the way to gain popularity for himself.

http://www.sourcegaming.info/2015/12/24/people-are-free-to-criticize-but-dont-lose-faith/

Masahiro Sakurai:

By the time this column has been published, the final Smash special presentation should have debuted, offering some new information. But, as of my writing this, nothing has been announced. Please watch it!

Around the same time, the new Star Wars film is going to premiere, something I’m also anxiously waiting for. I’m so excited! However, George Lucas is not directing it. He’s not even a producer. Lucasfilms, and the rights to the movies, were purchased in 2012 by Disney. This time, J.J. Abrams is directing. The reason for the buyout was “to protect Star Wars and Lucasfilms.”

Separate from that, in an interview in the American edition of Vanity Fair, Lucas himself apparently said “you go to make a movie and all you do is get criticized. And it’s not much fun. You can’t experiment.”

A truly serious problem….! He’s such a big name, and to hear him leave this franchise that has impassioned so many fans, a person who worked on the originals with his own hands, is incredibly sad and frustrating. Personally, George Lucas’s work is the work I would really like to see.

However, I truly understand his feelings. You could say my body is filled with these feelings. Making something, and completing it is a huge undertaking, and there are a lot of places where fans can’t see. It’s like building a house, but people focus on a single painting that’s hung up on a wall in one room, and fixate on it, and keep listing off their complaints of that painting. These situations are very common.

Attack is not the same as slander. You can attack someone for the right reason and maybe he did. But if you want to be a respectable person you don't start political wars without a strong base. Trying to climb up the backs of other devs and bully people is literally all certain individuals ever amounted to here and is why they have nowhere else to go. When they shrug their shoulders and do the "who me" routine it's reminiscent of small children getting caught stealing.

For me, a familiar example would be…in Smash, Cloud recently became a playable character. And there were people that strongly criticized that, saying “Stop adding non-Nintendo characters!” This is completely ignoring the fact that I’ve added many, many Nintendo characters to Smash. It also ignores the many fans who were overjoyed at Cloud’s addition. Looking at the big picture, I am on the receiving end of countless amounts of truly trivial statements.

However, I think that’s okay. Different people value different things differently, and they should stay honest to that. For example, even I, as a fan (?) have my complaints with Star Wars. I honestly dislike Episode VI’s long-winded pacing and how easily the Empire Stormtroopers fall to the Ewoks. I think that the re-releases are redundant and superfluous. But, more than that, I am grateful that they showed me these various worlds, and let me enjoy them. Normally, I just don’t have the opportunity to vocalize my feelings of gratitude.

It’s particularly easy to voice criticisms, and opinions are very strong. When people yell loudly, it also invites mob mentality and conformity. It’s easy for negative opinions to be amplified, while positive opinions are quieted. People don’t understand the circumstances and state of affairs behind development, and it’s not allowed for creators to make excuses. There are even people who feel emotionally battered and quit working.

Some players might think “If you’re going to lose to stuff like that, maybe you shouldn’t be a creator?” But, creators are people too. It’s not that we’re ignoring the feelings of the people who play our games. But criticisms can become slander that’s focused on being an attack, and if you take those hits upfront, then it chips away at the power of production.

Generally speaking, knowing any programming like Java, C, hell, even PHP will help. There's just a general logic to programming that can always transfer from one language to another, and it's much better to start learning on an "universal" language rather than something software-specific like GML.

More specifically - as in, "what do I do right now" - just download any game engine that sounds interesting to you, watch some beginners tutorials about them, try to imitate what they teach, do your own thing with it, etc. You'll very quickly be able to tell what kind of skills you should have and lack as of now.

From the beginning, I have thought “the people who don’t raise their voices are important.” I created my first game, Kirby’s Dreamland, a game you could say was designed for beginners, because beginners don’t usually raise their voices. I think that it is necessary to really look at these people, understand them, and work patiently and persevere and build on my work.

I don’t want people who are involved in ‘creating’ things to become disheartened by criticism. Just being able to impart ‘fun’ to a lot of people is a blessing, after all.

yea because pixel platformers or VNs that indies are making are so demanding

>>
>>126755671
>someone can learn to program pretty well in a few months
It always amazed me how people love to bash coders despite the fact that all those engines wouldn't exist without us in the first place.
I'm not even bashing artists, I'm just amazed to see the constant 'code is useless LOL' shitposting.

Besides I noticed something :
There are a good amount of indie games with shitty art that got popular and racked money. The one thing that people always forget about them is that they have shitty art precisely because the coder or designer couldn't find an artist willing to team, probably because he was busy posting somewhere that coders are useless. The irony.

Sure, if you're gonna make a pixel platformer or a fucking VN then of course you can take any cookie cutter engine and slap your art on it. But if you wanna make something original instead of ____ but ____ with ____, then having more freedom is better.

Anyways, it depends on what you're making. There are times when you don't need to program, and times when you don't need to draw.
>>
>>126756218
True, absolutely true. There are indeed actually a lot of successful games with overly simplistic or programmer art

It's not exactly worthless. But his statement has some merit to it. Programming a game can be done by anyone, and a game programmer does not need to adhere to any methodology and process as much as a Software Engineer does. Art is really fucking important. Focus on improving your art first.

The thing is, most successful indie games nowadays are usually only the ones with either minimalistic, meme or voxelTM 8Go runtime RAM arts.

Most kickstarters or funding campaigns started by advanced artists, if I can call them like that, literally always fail. Or the assets end up being sold or used in a shitty or niche mobile game.

And frankly, as a coder, it pains me. Each time I see a genuine cute model in a shitty game I can only think : "What a fucking waste".

>>
>>126758242
Yeah, you're right. It's not convenient for a beginner to use ketchup as their drawing tool after all, even when the same fundamentals apply. There are good starting points, but I have to say as a learning artist myself, it all becomes convoluted as time goes on and it becomes hard to recommend just a few good resources with which to begin, you know? It ends up that one is jumping from thing to thing, experimenting with pretty much every resource they can find.

progress: crawled through adding some complex backend code. Now the player has to roll dice sequentially. Alpha is essentially at a point that I can now call it an alpha, going to chop up some sound effects and send it to a friend to see his thoughts on how everything looks/is set up shortly.

Things planned for this week:
>Decide on weather ammo will make the cut
>Dialogue boxes
>Random encounter code
>Revamp how the inventory displays when using it in battle
And finally the big maybe:
>Attacking/getting attacked shakes the screen

May also polish some of the flavor text. But god damn. All I need for this project to go golden is ~$15k, at which point I can be assured I won't need a job to support myself for the next year/year and a half while I dev this shit to completion.

You mean like washing dishes so you can afford to get drunk and cry to strangers on the internet about what a failure you are and how your friends couldn't even trust you to cobble together a shitty racing map in hammer for gmod?
>>
>>126765234
Why would I want a "real job"?
I already make enough with gamedev to live. I don't need to be wealthy.

how do you buy games if you're unemployed?

>>126765584
I think the question "Were you not planning on living anyways?" is still valid beyond top bantz. At that point, why not just outright beg on GoFundMe like trannies do? Or go on welfare/autismbux or some shit.

You and rot8 just never learn.
You're a moron who has never done anything except shitpost here. Literally accomplished nothing as far as gamedev goes and now that mommy got you a dayjob washing dishes at the cafe down the street you come back and post this garbage. What a life you lead Sourcefam we are all in awe of you.

>last summer was this place's Eternal September imo, before that it was pretty comfy

No, anyone who arrived here before 2013 is pretty much cancer. In fact, the highlight of our general was when /vg/ didn't even exist.

Instead of having an echochamber of shitposting, we were able to show off our games to /v/ in general, which got feedback and criticism from people who don't do gamedev. Right now we just have a bunch of "artists" circlejerking each other, getting jealous, and manufacturing social drama in order to get (You)s. It's disgusting.

Fuck you all, honestly.

Bro you've literally accomplished nothing with your life let alone gamedev. Stirring up shitposting in agdg is really all you've ever done and now it's just stale and boring. You're boring. Even when you get drunk and cry to us about what a failure you are it's boring because you've just done it so many times. Stop being so boring.
