Okay then, here are some tips!

Vault Sentinels will give you Mark, and tell everyone where you are. Not a good idea to be in the open then. Vault Wardens will lock all doors and staircases so you can't escape. Yaktaur packs, elf packs, giants, dragons are all common as well as ugly things, deep trolls, ogre magi and anything else scary. Be prepared for anything. Can't dig through walls.

Do not go to Vaults 5. It is a bad time. You'll want to clear out everything else like Depths first. It's an ambush with 20 something guards surrounding you, and the noise will draw everything from Ancient Liches, Shadow Dragons, Titans, the works. Buff up before heading down, don't be afraid to stairdance or teleport away.

Depths 1-4 is generally harder than Vaults 1-4 but its not too dissimilar. Depths has a lot of huge dangerous handmade areas to watch out for. Juggernauts will also sprint across the map and eat most your health in one shot.

reusable restore mana is super fucking rare, and the potions usually need to be hoarded for final fights on mana-limited casters. The standart amulet is the only other source I know of that has it. I think other randart/ego jewelry can generate with it but it's super rare.

Yeah. Elves are nasty. That was probably one of them demonologists. Elf 3 has an ending vault which is a large chamber filled with amazing loot and Elf murderhulks with fun spells like Hellfire, Banishment, Summon Greater Demon, Lehudib's Crystal Spear, Smite, and other such pleasantness.

Also Master Archers who will ping you for crazy damage, agile and super fast Blademasters who will shred you to pieces, and Death Mages who will ressurect elves who die and blast you with more magic.

General tactic is luring and using chokepoints, its almost unwinnable in a straight fight without an incredibly beefy and powerful character.

For future reference, always (x-v) to view monsters you've not seen and look them up to avoid dying horribly to an ability you were unaware of.

I really recommend wyrmcloning for everyone with a vampiric weapon, 100+AC and an immunity, especially races with horrible experience penalties like demigods and half titans.

It spawns artifacts left and right and fills you with lodsofexp in the most efficient way possible.

The answer is always yes, probably 3 turns ago. If you've not gotten this far before, 95% of the time the problem is that you're not playing carefully enough, misjudging the danger of situations, and not using consumables.

They're meant to be used. Never die with an identified blink scroll in your inventory.

Sil is a challenging and very punishing game. Quick games.
Cataclysm is maybe the way to go. A lot of shit to do, but easy if you know what you're doing.
Brogue is easy to pick up but very hard to win.
NetHack is really complex.
A lot of people play Angband and its variants. I can't advice about it because I can't understand what variant is the best and where to download. They are really long games and very grindy but kinda fun.

Make sure you have a Hydra plan when you head into Lair. Multiple attacks shred weak defenses no matter your weapon type, and bladed weapons won't cut it unless your damage is exceptional.

Haven't played CDDA in a few months. Do NPCs still spawn in your basement and kill you while you sleep? Are settlements fun now?

PosChengband is in right now. Very fun and colorful like a bowl of Lucky Charms.

NPPAngband is good if you want to get close to a "pure" Angband playthrough with some convenience tweaks.

Halls of Mist is like Sil in that it's heavily diverged from vanilla, but it's very slick and worth a playthrough.

ToME 2.3.5 is also interesting.

The evac shelter start is easier, you can make a bunch of stuff then sneak into town at night to steal some food and drink. Sometimes you can even recruit the NPC buddy.

I'm playing a Rod Devicemaster and though the first 10 levels were suitably terrible, it's getting very fun. Still no attack rods yet(they're all very expensive from the black market- I need to save up) but my wands and weapons are working quite well for now.

The recharging is a mixed bag and device malfunction is a kinda shitty mechanic, but I find it much more enjoyable to not have to duck into the Sorcery Tower every time I town for recharging.

The new UI, messages, ~ knowledge, and character sheet are fantastic. The "seen monster" window is another excellent addition.

I keep hearing about this but I've never actually had it happen to me once on a non-cursed evokable. I only found a single cursed one.

if I could say something against the new wand/rod/staves mechanics is that I can't stack offense wands anymore and that really makes me scared when I think about the serpent.
How the fuck am I supposed to kill the serpent with a wand of rockets that has only five charges?

I can't just fill my inventory with wands of rockets.

casting heal is only possible if you play a priest, unless you mean using a staff of healing or something and those run out of charges pretty quickly & cure only 300 HP, which doesn't put you out of the DANGER ZONE as much as *healing* does, plus makes you lose a whole turn.

Mana storm is always a possibility but where you used to be able to carry 8 staves of mana storm in a single backpack slot now they don't stack anymore so it could really be a problem if you were ever thinking of taking other things. And you will need more than that to kill the serpent, given that he has a whopping 10.000 HP and mana storm does around 300 damage and he can heal himself.

I just downloaded the latest experimental CDDA, and they've started using colors to differentiate fields in item view.

Sadly, they chose the worst possible colors.
Not only is the dark-blue-on-black really hard to see on my display, the brown is triggering some negative connotations from being the color for rotten items.

Does anyone know how to turn this off, or at least change the colors?

I don't know which to use though! Swapping back and forth isn't an option with Spriggan food conduct, but it feels wrong to pass up a rarity like vamp dagger. Elec damage is huge though, especially early game...
