Which laser rifle should I use?

Alright I just started a new run and joined the minutemen for the first time. Doing their questline has some shitty level scaling.

The first time I noticed a sharp rise in enemy level was the ghoul quest... I finished it at level 8 by mini-nuking the glowing ghoul. Right after he gives me a quest to fight a fucking mirelurk queen.

It's not the "free" Synth's that are the problem, it's the ones that the Institute has planted around the place.

Remember that one raider Synth who you hunt down with X6-88? He has NFI idea he's a synth and X6-88 just shuts him down out of the blue with a pass-phrase.

Regardless of what happens the Synth is always tied to the Institute and since it's often impossible to tell which ones are planted to replace people and which ones are free it's perfectly reasonable that people are cautious of them.

As much as I believe the Synths have free will and are people in their own right - I think it's somewhat telling that the Institute STILL only views them as tools to be used and not as fully sentient people.

The Institute CREATED the Synths, it can't all just be "they can't tell they have created sentient life / they are evil".

The Institute holds knowledge that continues to influence their outlook on Synths. What's to say there isn't some key aspect that makes Synths inhuman at their core? We just don't know.

Perhaps I didn't make it clear in my original post, when I say "At any point a switch could flip in the Synth's head" I am referring to what the BoS and the Commonwealth at large believes of Synths and as far as they're concerned there's not much else to go on.

The Institute has all this technology in its hands to do good and all it's proven that it can do is slaughter innocents, steal resources, spy on the surface and when you side with them ACTIVELY DESTROY ANYONE WHO CAN CHALLENGE THEM.

The Brotherhood maybe extremists but they are 100% right about the Institute - those technologies are dangerous and have been used to cause far more harm than good in the Commonwealth.

I've been trying to connect all the settlements but its slowly burning me out.

I started a heavy weapon character and it's already impractical.

Stores do not even sell the ammunition until later on, so even though I am level 6 and have around 2k caps, I can't even buy the ammo I need.

Heavy Weapons are also barely modifiable. Pistols, Autos, and Rifles get like 4-6 slots to modify, each with many parts.

Heavy Weapons barely get 3 parts to modify.

A single rifle can handle all ranges.

I find it strange as fuck that riflemen/commandos can go in guns blazing wherever the fuck they want, meanwhile the guy with the heavy weapons has to play tactically.

Please god no. Fallout 4 is so much better than NV. And is so much better at capturing what I like about the franchise. Exploration and freedom. New Vegas had more freedom in its story, yes. But it was more linear in its whole. Think about it, everyone has taken the same path to Vegas itself (Goodsprings, Primm, Outpost, Nipton, Novac etc) but I'm sure nearly nobody went to Diamond City the same way. Hell, I ended up entering Boston for the first time from the south. Not to say I don't love New Vegas, I do. I prefer New Vegas over 3. But 4 over New Vegas as it took the things I missed most from 3 and brought them back.

I think I completely agree with everything you said in that post apart from "Please god no". In the same way Bethesda massively improved over FO3 with FO4 (though the removal of skills is pretty jarring), Obsidian can improve over NV. I mean, at the very least, it'll be a NV-like experience but build on FO4 rather than FO3. I don't think it's particularly optimistic for them to improve (i.e. open up) the linear first 1/4 or so of the game, either.

Armorsmith Extended is the only real 'important' mod I have right now. I'd put Weapon Damage Overhaul as a close second--it does a nice job of rebalancing the weapons.

Other than that, it's mostly retextures. I recommend Improved Map with Visible Roads, Full Dialogue Interface, and P.A.M.S. (Power Armor Movement Sounds) as well.

At least we'll have factions other than Brotherhood of Steal with some actual development to them. The Van Graffs in NV have just as much backstory and named/unique characters as the Minutemen.

Fallout 4 is by all means a smoother (gameplay/combat), more free experience (exploration) than all of the Fallouts before it, but it is lacking in many more ways and I'm not going to write off all of Obsidian because their first Gamebryo Fallout game railroaded you at the start.

There's a good number of things it changes. You can leave a main story mission without fighting the "boss" at the end. You can change several factors of the Diamond City Blues quest and all the various follow up elements of that depending on who died and who got what cut of the money/drugs. Vault 81 wants some power cores to let you in unless you pass a speech check. There's a lot of smaller things like the old lady that thinks she's a synth, you can calm her down. Just because you can't force everyone to do what you want, doesn't make it useless. Even in a game like Fallout 2, there's almost always an alternative anyway, like you could say "why bother talking your way out of the Temple of Trials when you could just beat him up?"

Don't get me wrong, there's still less utilisation of it than I'd like but it's not as bad as people make out.
