"Abyssals" are just high-tier gems. You'll know when you have one because "abyssal" will be in the name. (Obviously.)

Heavy Abyssals are obtained from the Bloodletting Beast.

Cold Abyssals are obtained from the Pthumerian Descendant and Pthumerian Elder. (Elder is an easier fight, so go after him.)

Abyssal scaling gems are the best kind. For some reason, even a 1% difference (e.g. 21% to 22%) gives a huge boost in damage. (Like, 40-50 AR in my experience.) So, yeah, 22% scaling abyssals are what you want. If you're running an ARC build, go for Cold. If you're running a STR build, go for Heavy. You can get these Abyssals only by fighting the bosses I mentioned previously. You'll have to make sure you fight them in Fetid + Rotted + Cursed depth 5 dungeons, too, or you won't be able to potentially get the best abyssals.

Has anyone tried a bloodtinge playthrough before? How is it? Are there any decent weapons early on or do you essentially cripple yourself until cainhurst?
I want to try the whole bone ash gun toting playthrough but I'm worried that it'll take more than half the game before my build gets going and that it'll lack variety.

For weapons like the bowblade and chikage, am I better off going 50skl/25blt or vice versa? If it's the latter I might as well go with a skill build and just have more variety

For regulars, they are independent. You need to make each normal chalice before you can search for it. For roots though, you need to just make thevery same depth and rites.

For example, you create an frc isz root. This grants you access to all frc depth 5 roots that are not sinister, because you haven't made a depth 5 sinister anything yet, but you can totally search for a d5 ihyll or lower loran, if you have those chalices in your inventory.

there's some more content in the base game (a coop covenant), there are new tools in the DLC, the new transformations are basically new weapons that come along with a new player animation set, the meta is still 80-120,

one of the biggest changes is that you can buy ritual blood 5, bastard of loran, and red jelly in NG+ even if you've never done any chalices. so you can take the following chalice sequence
pthumeru: d1->d2->d3->acquire arcane haze extractor
and then go straight to fucking isz. you can also skip loran and go to defiled. so chalices are much faster to unlock now

Hands down most annoying weapon to fight. These guys fight in the most predictable, R1 spamming way but it's impossible for me to parry online. Like seeing exactly what you need to do then getting boned anyway. Phantom lag hits out of the ass as well.

Up to you, mate. Give each of them a try and stick with what you like best. Saw cleaver is an incredibly efficient dps weapon but isn't very interesting beyond that. You'll probably find yourself wanting to abandon it before you're too deep in the game.

the real issue is that %arc/+arc gems are a fucking nightmare to farm and cold abyssals are really easy. also cold abyssals can get %up v. open foes, which i'm confident in practice outperforms any AR juggling

Is the chikage overall better on a primarily skill build with some bloodtinge or as primary bloodtinge build with some skill?

I assume you have to make use of both modes pretty heavily, but which one benefits more (or is more dependent on) scaling stats in order to function?

that guide is good but it is also out-of-date. you can buy certain materials on NG+ now, which let you skip vast chunks of that guide

the correct route is now:
1. follow the guide up through depth 3 pthumeru
2. buy ritual blood 5, bastard of loran, and red jelly from NG+
3. you can now go straight to isz. you can now go straight to defiled, and from there to ihyll. you can skip loran entirely if you don't need anything there. most importantly, *there is never any reason to enter a side room after depth 3 pthumeru because you can buy all the mats*

Gave up on my BLT build. Woke up this morning at 8am to farm those BLT gems, its 6pm now and not 1 off shape gem dropped. 3 eye runes, 323 discovery rate, farmed watchers, BSB, Bloodlickers and not 1 single gem dropped. even if you can't (pretty sure you can but not home), i can 100% confirm that you can buy mats to go straight to isz and defiled (you can buy bastard of loran). and there's enough red jelly in isz to unlock ihyll. so it doesn't change anything, you can still skip ahead the same way

Can someone tell me what that one Elevator in the Research Hall is used for?

There are 2 that serve as short cuts and then there is a third elevator shaft with no elevator in it after you drop down to the church hunter in the middle of the stairs.

I finished the DLC and i'm pretty sure i explored everything but i never got anything from that elevator shaft. Is it really just for decoration?

You can even double backstab with its R2 combo. Charge it, then wait just a moment before doing the second hit and it'll knock them down again. Then you can do the backstab for immense damage.

but i can't emphasize enough how much skipping side rooms speeds things up. if you go into chaiices just intending to run to the switch and leave you can be out in like 10 minutes. cutting out side rooms cuts out about half the length of the chalice

if you go straight to defiled, then ihyll, you will be able to buy blood4 to get into loran after you kill yharnham. so no need to find that either

honestly lots of builds can be "done" with just isz. arcane builds can farm 2 %arcane radials from bone ash hunters, and an abyssal cold triangle, just in isz. so you can finish an entire kin build that way

Just pump STR, VIT, and maybe a bit of END. The Gatling Gun doesn't scale well with BLT, so you don't really need to invest in that stat past the base requirements. Just upgrade it, slap a 31% blood damage gem, and you'll be set. You can even farm one with flat BLT damage, but that takes a lot of work.
