Reposting in new thread
I added an indicator telling the player they need to do something to see more text.
I also did a lot of backend work

Future things to do is add a portait box that's optional and can automatically grab the right portrait given some variable (string name or id int) and a character name (to display under the portrait if I want)

From there I need to allow the chat box to flow into other events such as showing dialog options, or forcing the character to move, or anything else is a scripted event. This will probably be done by a simple delegate.

I'm thinking I could make a system of event objects that all have an entry point and an exit point and handle themselves properly. Then you can just drag different behaviours into each other to string them together.

That sure would be a lot of effort for something no one participates in.
>>
>>123638531
In a normal game yeah, in Unity you have to take that array and construct a sprite that you can render.

Currently I have it set to automatically create a bunch of prefabs.
That image is literally hundreds of objects. Each grass tile is an object. Each tree trunk is an object. Each tree leaf bush is an object. etc

That's something I need to work on since developing like that is impossible.
>>
>>123638524
Why do the trees look like they move from the beginning to the end of this webm? am I going cray?
>>
ive made too many video games using math like addition. We need to revolutionize mathematical functions to truly make a new video game. perhaps ``quantum physics`` will have the answer. . .
>>
>>123638714
very close colors to the background. would look really nice on a dark background though
>>
>>123638738
Every tree has a script that randomizes their size by 5%, their color between white (base) and a provided color I give them, and their depth for drawing. At the beginning, they haven't randomized yet. After they have which is why they change drawing depths as well.
>>
>>123638719
>developing like that is impossible
Why?

Just make them children to another ge object and it will look a lot cleaner.

You could always just tile the age on a plane or quad.....

I did consider working towards a sailboat and finding some shitty sandbar island to squat on for vacationing. y'know, just kinda claiming it and building a primitive shack to chillaxe in. my actual work is near a canal too and it's flanked by parks with "shores" so in theory I could sail to work on a small enough vessel assuming I don't get arrested by the coast guard

This is what I'm doing right now

Currently I have a script that generates a bunch of sprites in a huge grid. Each of them has a script that I can set an Enum to. When I hit "Generate" on the main script, all those objects that have their Enum set are replaced with Prefabs. It's super cluttery and each prefab requires a ridiculous amount of time and takes a ridiculous amount of resources to handle by the game for what I want it to do

The solution is to generate one massive sprite, or smaller sprites out of a tilesheet.

There are paid solutions, but I want to try making a free one first.

>If you really need to why not make an object pool and instantiate them all at start instead of when its running
Also that wouldn't really do anything
That's not how object pools are used

Object pools are for objects that are going to be destroyed and recreated often. If you need to create an object beyond the pools limit, it doesn't gain you any benefit. Pools only come in handy when you've destroyed previous objects and you want to create new ones.

I picked up FL Studio today and made my first three songs. I'd imagine they're pretty babby-tier, and I know for a fact I have a lot more work to do on them, but I'm pretty proud of learning the software so quickly and cranking out a couple of pleasant-sounding songs.

Does anyone have some guides or lectures on musical theory and construction? I have a ton to learn on this sorta' thing.

Just a bit of hot opinion here, but I think you should scale it relative to the character instead of the whole world, like in Fig 1. You don't need that much world information, but you need more character information. Also make your world space smaller, that seemingly simple room seems absolutely cavernous like that. When I said it was charming I meant with fig 2's sense of scale.

Learn about melody, what chords are, chord progressions, shit like that. Then move on to other stuff. Pick up an instrument. Even just 2-3 months of learning an instrument can yield great results to your own music. Learn some stuff before you even try to make music. Don't expect results fast.

I'd like to stress that I highly highly reccomend learning an instrument when starting out. When you do that not only do you learn the basics, but you also gain the intuition. I can't really explain that to you, but you learn how to improvise, recognize harmonies, and really you can kind of envision things better and won't feel really limited. I use to think that because I would be writing a lot of the songs on the computer, I wouldn't need to learn an instrument. So I cut my piano lessons after about 4 months. It's something I really regret to this day, but even that 4 months gave me the ability to harmonize the melodies in my head, gave me a sort of picture of how music overall is structured, and set the groundwork for me to delve even further into my knowledge.

It's difficult to get around the fact that larger armies and better equipment is better. I'm not sure what you want out of that. Is there any games you know of that do it differently? A concrete example.

And the "upgrade path". Do you mean the structures you build in a city? Or do you mean the tech tree? If so don't worry, auntie mio has got you covered.

This sounds very very bad, basically like someone is flailing on the instrument without any thought put into it whatsoever. As others have said, look up some music theory lectures on youtube or something, learn chords. Its pretty fucking easy to do. Music is much easier than art assets imo.
>>
>>123648423
I assure you it has nothing to do with the size of my byte. It is far larger than 8-bit. Floats are just more precise when it comes to pleasure.

Seems like a bad idea. The important thing in a 4x is the war, not the battles. 4x games with too much combat depth drag on when lots of battles are happening. Gotta be snappy.

Why aren't more amateur devs making pc board games/games with board game mechanics?
Advantages:
1. Quick and easy to code. Fast to prototype and fast to finish.
2. Art isn't even mandatory if your game is good, but still helps.
3. Gameplay is king. Imagination is your limit. You can go hog wild with the mechanics.

To be quite honest none of that is particularly difficult or even much different from any other game.

The only thing that is really different is the high poly mesh but there are even AAA devs saying "Fuck it", only doing that for a tiny portion of their models.

Especially on consoles. That's the reason why anything besides the character models in CoD looks like complete ass.

what the other anon said, start small and work yourself up
the first few days are the hardest because of all the new shit to take in
going from successfully drawing a triangle on screen to drawing a simple 3d game actually isn't all that difficult, the hardest part is creating all the content (making maps, models, animations etc)

Some tweaks to character movement that make it feel a little more fluid.

In the vein of Mario 64, the character now takes time to rotate to the movement direction, and walks in the direction he's facing until then (so turning around means running in a little circle). This behavior is overridden when in 2D OR when the gun is equipped to make those feel snappier.

Also, a la KH3, you can now slide down slopes. This isn't actually a new movement mode, it's just a new animation for walking when the player's movement direction slants downward enough. Also when moving downward in this way the player's max walk speed slowly increases (so sliding down hills enables you to accelerate a little bit).

This, when combined with the automatic wall slide mechanics, makes sliding down long slides really feel good. The player can steer when the surface is flat enough and otherwise remains static.

Still to do is to disable no-input braking (i.e. once you start sliding, you continue, even if you let off the stick), not necessarily forever so much as to see if it feels okay. Right now you can actually slide-into-walk on a slope by changing direction, I'm not sure if I really want to deprive the player of the ability to stand on a downward slope just yet.

I'm moving logic objects over to the new spawning system which has the benefit of letting you drag stuff around which is REALLY nice for this shit lol

also i've remade the trigger system to be completely generic, letting you link any object to any other object. I link the trigger zones up to boxes in this but i could use other objects, the player, shield knights, other logic, ect. everything potentially works with everything else

>>
>>123664834
This isn't a terrible idea, but it's sort of counterintuitive since pushing up the hill would be expected to rotate you in that direction (which it does, it just rotates you until your slide naturally becomes a walk).

Actually, that may work okay with the skid logic though; the animation would probably blend nicely with the current "switch-directions-really-fast-and-skid" movement, so holding directly against the slope of the hill would have you "brake" by flipping around and skidding, which would leave you standing again.

Soooo.. 1-2 weeks ago I started getting into programming.
With the goal in mind, to code my own little indie games in the near to distant future.

I just blindly went to some website that teaches coding. I don't know why, but I started with Java Script.
Now the more I learn about the whole game dev business, the more I realize, that learning C/C++ might be better for me.

Should I just throw away the JavaScript knowledge and start from 0 with C/C++?
Or might JavaScript be useful later on?

I'm sure there are some optimizations the driver does with uniforms as opposed to UBOs.

If you use one of the new, low-level APIs like Mantle, the only way to get any data whatsoever into a shader is through a buffer (UBO) or texture, so it seems logical that the same thing happens in OpenGL

If you're getting into gamedev, SFML's a great starter library for making games in C++. As far as the actual code goes, "Jumping Into C++" is a great primer to the language/programming in general. I wouldn't say one of them is better, there are lots of aspects to consider. Unreal probably has the lead on most aspects except accessibility though. If you're up for using C++ and not much help, I'd say you should go Unreal. You can also use blueprints, but seriously that is fucking chaotic. Otherwise go Unity. Up to you though, try them.

Nothing set on stone, just brainstorming, but thought about:
>forcing everyone to use a little known/poorly documented/ abandoned framework
>picking a completely awkward control scheme and have everyone implement it in its own way
>have the output window be something like 900*90 or 90*900, or even more radical aspect ratios
>multiple windows (which I assume won't be possible for everyone)

The main reason I enter jams is to become more familiar with the engine I'm using, not to use some random framework that I'll never use again. So I think that one is a bad idea.

Having a strange aspect ratio could be an interesting jam though.

I'm new to the general and I hope to intermittently be around for a while. Out of the 4 engines in the op, which one is most recommended for a fairly simple 2d game (I don't even know what genre it's gonna be, probably rpg or tbs)? From the glance I've given them, it seems to be unity because everything else wants to be in 3d, but maybe I'm just missing something.

Does anyone use an open source engine like cocos and prefer that instead for licensing reasons, or is that really not something to give a fuck about at this level?

Should I use a name or trip in this general, or is it more preferred to be identified by your work!
>>

You've probably never worked on a game before, in which case go simple first and foremost. You're not going to get some grand RPG or strategy game done your first time. All of the engines shown can work for stuff, but Unity is a decent start (Gamemaker can be better if you're a complete newbie, though).

Also people prefer anonymity, people will usually call you by the name of your game once it's worked on.

Quite the contrary; if I JLMG that runs in the default command prompt, that'll immediately be more inviting than a game that can only be run in a separately downloaded console, etc.

Now I just need about one more day to finish fiddling with the window manipulation, and then I can start coding the game itself. Or maybe study for a change.

Regardless, this is just procrastination for me, for now.

Gee, I wonder why. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that command prompt is so limited that devs don't bother making games for it?

I think the idea of no-install games (web) is attractive, and with todays tech you can do a lot of fun things in the browser, my current one runs at 144 FPS (vsync) without a sweat and I don't need more performance.

It all comes down to what you're comfortable with and what the goal of your game is, I probably wouldn't try a 3D game in the browser unless it was really basic.
