I've never really tried putting spearmen BEHIND other units like this, I didn't think it'd really work. It's the most fucking amazing thing I've ever witnessed though.

>enemy charges into spears and gets fucked, then they're fighting primarily well armoured and defensive melee units, while also being stabbed by pikes

Do the guys in front actually block any arrows for the pikemen or how is that shit even calculated?

The one for shogun 2 sticks fairly close to vanilla. With that I mean the changes are mostly in stats and ai(supposedly). It does not add any more units but it adds some optional cosmetic changes. It has its own launcher so you can customize a lot of things.

You should try out the newish Master of Strategy mod. It changes stuff a lot more than Darthmod though. It adds several ashigaru troops tier( Drafted, Semi-professional, Professional) and samurai troop tiers (retainer, normal, veteran) and much, much more.

>>
>>121836089
Pretty hard to fix. Darthmod may get the ai to move in formation but that's it. The unfixable unit reponsiveness is a way bigger problem and that it what puts me off. Never understood why so many say it is the best total war.

Garrisons are fucking huge in DEI, I'm not sure how I'm supposed to deal with them most of the time
>>
>>121838429
Usually I have to b8 their armies out into the field by raiding, defeat them, and then lay siege to the cities. In fact I don't think I've taken a walled city by storming in DEI.
>>
>>121838576
I've only started my campaign and took a few undefended settlements (so their garrisons were THAT large yet)

I also did take one settlement wich had a general-only army on the outside, so the garrison came as reinforcements and I defeated them

>>121838429
Garrison units are shit though. They don't do that much damage so you have plenty of time to hammer and anvil them all.
>>
>>121838947
In the field it's fine but it's difficult to take the walls against garrison + army. They just fucking hang on forever and your men seem to get morale penalties just for being there.
>>
>>121839218
Yeah walled cities are a problem and that is kinda realistic I guess. Making a siege army with shock troops, elite skirmishers( preferably syracusian siege crossbows) and artillery should do the trick against barbarian cities.

You mostly only need equipment that can destroy walls against civlized cities. Those cities are way easier to get a foothold in. Also overall army casualties counts a lot towards morale so throw those javelins.

In R2/Attila elephants are god-tier suicide units
Don use them at the same time as your other units though , always put them up front and have them rush the front lines and wipe our as many as possible before dying
>>
>>121844602
This
Especially aginist early game barbars,
2-3 elephant units could wipe out half their army before the rest of your army engages
>>
>>121844602
what are you talking about? I use them in the middle of the battle ones their line is fixed and I just rek enemy armies in an instant and the elephants survive aswell.

I llimit myself to only 1 ele army because it's so OP
>>
>>121844602
>one hit wondering
only during major settlement sieges should you do that
in regular battles just keep them on the flanks with the cav
they make absurdly good anti-melee cav units and when your cav clears out their skirmishers, send the elephants into the massive blob of enemy melee infantry that forms and watch them stack up 1000 kills while the enemy army mass routs
>>
>>121844902
> Elephants suriving
Imo as expensive as they are it's better for them to do their part and die, especially armored elephants
Could be wrong but iv always kept them away from my own men often as possible because of them going berserk and taking out as many of your own guy as well as the enemy
>>
>>121845185
in my experience high tier elephants like Indian armored and syrians don't berserk and when I use them as hammer and anvil I literally take no losses on them and they level up like crazy since they get 1000+ kills.

I have no idea why you and that other anon want to suicide them. although your frontal attack tactic is historically accurate
>>
>>121845561
You take no casualties on your elephant unit in the campaign map if you chisel them in battle? holy fuck I didn't know that
>>

It was kinda funny because they treated R1 as if it was the RTS to end all RTS games

>>
This is justice!!!
Venice has been eliminated by the ERE!
>>
To be fair I almost never use hammer and anvil
Since the Ai for the most part just rushes your center, Barbars especially , im always using a form of envelopent
> line up all your infantry in a big long line , weakest in the center , stronger on the ends, double or triple depth depending
> use your calvary and half of your missile troops to kill their calv, or atleast make sure theirs doesn't fuck everything up
> other half of your missiles are either firing at the center or fighting the units who dident immediately rush the center , or enemy missiles
> once your center starts to weaken , have them fall back, far enough so that the barbs have to chase, but not far enough that they are too far from your flanks
> have the flanks rush in from both sides, at worst having the enemy figniting between two sides ,at best completely surrounding the enemy
> keep your missles around to counter any that dident fall into the trap, or were just meandering around, same with the units you used as your center

Yes, the arrows have a calculation to see how many people they hit in a volley. You'll take more hits overall but they'll be spread out between the two units.

Divide et Impera, it's an overhaul for R2. The most popular one I think. Basically makes shit how it should've been at launch and adds some interesting features, with an eye to historical accuracy.

The Franks accepted peace right off the bat, as we still had good relations.

We decide to carry on with our campaign of total genocide against the Rugians, who have taken the initiative in the war against us, and the Burgundians, who started all this shit.

The battle over the Burgundian capital was perhaps the bloodiest of my career in Total War.

4k vs. 4k, one side behind walls. We took their city with a brutal frontal assault, sending men in through the gates, a breach in the wall, and two siege towers.

The battle has been costly, but we can feel the Northern War drawing to a close. All that's left is to assault the poorly-defended Rugian capital, and we can return home to bonny ol' Britannia.

Cattios, heir to the throne and chief commander in the battle, travels up to the captured Burgund-hall to meet his father the king. The men celebrate and loot in the burned wreckage of the city below.

Relatively new to Medieval 2, currently playing as the Spanish.
I managed to crusade and occupy Cairo, but I fucked up by not exterminating the population or bringing more than one cardinal with me and about 10 turns in everything has gone to shit. Public order keeps dropping thanks to squalor and Imams and my governor is on the verge of death from old age.

Should I just abandon the city and use my army to BTFO of the Moors instead?

if you can't secure egypt (the most important thing is securing the fortresses) then yeah abandon it and reconquista iberia instead

What I would've liked to have seen was regions of impassable buildings, then regions where the buildings worked like forests, except cavalry couldn't enter, then finally open roads. Using the attila idea, you can put up barricades to slow down infantry / stop cavalry. This is to reflect the idea that cavalry was pretty much useless in taking cities - it was mostly done through siege and infantry. Combined with putting archers / skirmishers inside the building regions, then it becomes a slog to butcher your way to the centre of the city. You could simply set the buildings on fire, damaging the settlement and avoiding those regions, or simply stroll up the streets, taking fire from the garrison. When combined with the morale effects of damage to cities and capturing important areas, I think it could give a real dynamic, desperate combat scenario.

Of course, we aren't going to gete that with Warscape pathfinding.

I just reinstalled Medieval II for the first time in years, and I'm looking to play it with the Bellum Crucis mod

I installed 7.0, but it looks like there's no english translation for it yet anywhere (italian is difficult to piece through, and it sucks not being able to read the information cards for new units and added buildings)

I'm going to install 6.3 now, but judging from the forum it's posted on, I might have some trouble with applying the English language fix. Question is, should I expect to have any issue? And what'd you guys do to get this mod going on your ends?

I've read from you guys that this is one of the best historical mods for Medieval II, and I'm stoked to give it a go. Thanks in advance
>>
>>121886810

Thanks for reply, the forum thread's probably just full of retards then, good to know. Did you use the 6.3 or an older version? And got any other mods you use side by side with it?

it's downloading at 200kb/s, and it's got 1gb left (not sure why it's not zipped, thanks Italy), I'll give it a go in the morning

There is a partial English translation for BC 7.0, but you have to install a submod

>“No one knows much about Grimgor before he staggered out of the Blasted Wastes with the Immortulz, his bloody-minded bodyguard. Even for a Black Orc, Grimgor’s thirst for war was exceptional. If a single day went without battle, Grimgor was known to start camp-decimating arguments, his one good eye blazing with eagerness to find fault and start a good scrap. Two days without battle and Grimgor would smite anything he could reach, save (perhaps) his fellow Black Orcs. No one knows for sure what would happen if three days without a battle occurred, but even unquenchable thirst for battle is a sign that marks out a Warboss for leadership, a sign that that the Orc is favoured by Gork.

>Grimgor maintains a tough, elite retinue of Black Orc warriors around him. This is the hard-as-nails mob known as da Immortulz, a moniker earned due to their habit of surviving almost impossible battles. On the whole Grimgor much prefers Black Orcs to any other kind of greenskin, but plenty of weedier types have snuck into his camp when the steely gaze of his single eye is fixed elsewhere. So long as things are going well (which means there are lots of other things to fight against), Grimgor tolerates the company of other Orcs and Goblins, at least as long as they stay out of his sight.
Grimgor has slaughtered his way across the Blasted Wastes to the centre of the Empire and back. Yet after winning many victories, Grimgor returned to Red Eye Mountain. Deep underground, beyond where the Red Eye Night Goblins dwell, the endless hordes of Skaven can be found. Here, for a time, Grimgor can appease his need for daily butchery- for the ratmen feed uncountable numbers into the fray solely to occupy Grimgor’s fury.

>Yet eventually Grimgor will grow weary, striking out again in search of a worthier challenge- and when he does so, the world will tremble with fear, each nation praying that Grimgor won’t head in their direction”

Never invade in the winter. Seasons play a big part of the mod.

Uses the huge expanded map, garrison units have been increased.

The more provinces you own, the unhappier your cities get. He changed the religion mechanics and also added an unrest mechanic.

He added in buildings and units, as well as unit caps. Certain buildings produce unrest which gets annoying as fuck.

Most mod overhauls include the expanded map anyway, so I'd say go for another overhaul like sekigahara or land rising sun.

empire is the worst total war, poops is one the best, but its its limited in scope, and you can be sand niggers in both without mods
if you play poops with mods, try to get LME if you can find any links, Darthmod is not as good, buts its an ok alternative, also theres a ww1 mod, its not really fitting for total war but its fun still

Not sure about the screenshot issue but if your going defensive then go ottoman

Anyone else just plays every battle without auto-resolving? Even if the adds are 10:1, I just play the battle because I hate having unnecessary casualties and even when I know II'm going to lose, I play the battle, just to maximize enemy casualties.

No, I do this as well,
We'll if I have over 70% chance I'll just auto resolve,
But if I always fight otherwise, even if horrificly outnumberd , I will lose, but I can usually take out a good portion of their stack,
There was a battle i still remember as my crowning victory in any total war game ever, was playing rome 2 and as athens

What the fuck man? Seriously what the shit how bad do you have to be at video games to have a hard time controlling 40 units in a strategy game? I hate that it no longer is an option because it is often important, but I'm secretly glad because I hate reinforcing armies since they come from awkward directions and are often kind of broken (less of a problem since Rome 2 though to be honest, Napoleon and Shogun 2 were awful about this, can't remember the previous games since it's been a while)

I don't think I'll be getting Warhammer unless people are saying wonders about it or it's coming out in a good sale a few years down the line, though. Truth be told, I dislike the setting.
>>
>>121913329
God, I am so ready to fuck up every thing with Grimgor.EVERY.FUCKING.THING.

Also, interesting that they mentioned that Grimgor is fighting Skaven. Could Skaven make an appearace as a minor race in the first game alongside beast men? Still think Brettonia has the best chance of being day one FLC bUT maybe CA doesn't have the time/money/desire to flesh them out by launch.
>>
>>121924089
>dislike the setting.

I can't hate you for it, it's not for everyone. I love the setting to death and I'm so hyped because finally TW and Warhammer is happening. The problem is I'm so hyped and happy that something I always wanted is finally happened but from all that I hear the game is going to be meh at best
>>
>>121924284
I don't think the FLC will be day one, I've got my money on us getting a race quite early though like what happened with Longbeards.

CA can't keep that massive area of the map empty for long though, so paid or not we probably won't wait long either way.
>>
>>121924496
I suppose so. Probably it will just be something like the selucids for Rome 2 where they start off as a sort of generic npc faction. I agree that they really can't keep Brettonia unplayable for too long. Certainly not until the expansion like some people have said.
>>
>>121923562

I just removed a Saxon invasion of Britain, and now the Angle shitters are trying to get in.

I'd kill the last remnants of their pathetic race if I hadn't signed a peace treaty with them a few turns ago. I knew that was a bad idea, now they're just going to camp out in Britain until the truce expires.

I know it is, but for the time it would have been done with slave labor. I'm thinking they started working with "these buildings need slaves and slaves will be unhappy," realized they can't do that, so just made slavery its own mechanic and just slapping "squalor" where "slavery" would have been

Wasn't one of the reasons the Roman people were often getting uppity because there was a lot of unemployment (with jobs that could otherwise be done by Romans), which is also what the slavery-causes-public-order-loss mechanic is supposed to represent? Shouldn't then, considering the game tracks slave numbers by province and whether or not you take slaves when you defeat armies, we assume the cattle pen PO loss to mean something else?

Gonna post some more of my XC Briton campaign. This is the world in 210BC.

Ptolemies are keking the shit out of the Sillykids, Saba has yet to break out of Arabia, I control a hefty amount of Western Europe, Rome is getting close and kinda looking scary, I'm allied with Carthage, and Iberia is dumb.

The Germans continue to throw their fleshy bodies against my walls, and I'm sure the Sarmatians continue to be poor as dirt.

Gonna do a quick empire overview
>>
>>121949078
If you want to keep that Carthaginian alliance, find a way to sneakily give the Iberians your Iberian territory. Sharing a border with an ally is a good way to make that person not an ally.

The home provinces. Camulodunum and Samarobriva make me a good chunk of my total income, with the trade route between them being so short.

>>121949271
I want Carthage to not fight me, but that would mean giving up Numantia, which I've turned into Fortress Spain. It's incredibly rich and a very powerful city.

Northern European provinces. In the upper right you can see my two fortress cities on the Elbe, Phabiranum and Tulisurgium. I've built Halls of Heroes in both of them, which costs a fuck ton of money and time but allows me to build my most advanced units yet. I plan on Gaul being the real core of my empire, so I'm spamming trade and military buildings in every city.

Finally, my southern European holdings. Spain is a bit of a backwater, as I've really been focusing on fighting the Germans in the north. Every province I currently own except Emporion is a Celtic cultured province. I've made Emporion a Greek client kingdom, so that when I have to start tackling factions that have better armored troops, I can have a core of hoplites in each army.

History question

In history , after battles, how were all bodies taken care of?
I know that most huge battles usually did not involve entire 10,000 man armies(I know that was nothing compared to real historical armies) getting completely obliterated to the last man as we often see in total war , they are usually routing and retreating before losing too many , but still , that's a lot of bodies to deal with
>>
>>121951821
If it was in the middle of nowhere they were probably just left to rot/get picked at by scavengers.

If it was near a settlement or farmland I'd assume mass burials or burnings.

Admitidly I know fuck about the lore, but shouldn't isengard and mordor be one faction instead of two?

Isn't christopher Lee (forgot wizards name) Corrupted and working in tandem with sauron and making his own mini-mordor around isengard? Only reason in game I can see them being separate is if players want to betray sauron as christopher lee and take over from there

Lemme explain. Antiochus had Hannibal fucking barca as a general under his command and the entire resources of the vast sillykid empire (from syria to pakistan) and fucked up so hard. Just fucked himself and his people so hard. He put hannibal in command of nothing back in the homeland led his forces himself and was defending the pass at thermopylae. The series is a pretty sound concept for a For a totar war game, there's enough detailed factions for it to work

A few months ago I was actully working a personsl redwall mod for m2, I know enough about programing, coding and pre-warscape that I had a pretty good start, I even got the campaign map mostly finished, but I ran into the fact I dident know shit about 3D modeling and then just some life stuff got in the way and I just dropped the project

So anyway, I'm thinking of pushing into thracia and then naturally transitioning into a war with the romans, though I'm contemplating whether or not I should hold off on that and see if I can snatch Sardes without too much hassle from the seleucids. If I must go to war with them to take the city, then I'll have to move forces south and win a few battles in the hopes that they'll accept peace. Maybe they'll get over it and allow them to fall, who knows.

The supply system gives it more depth than even Attila in regards to logistical support of armies. Read up on their forum, it's actually quite complicated and there are a lot of new buildings and gameplay elements that go into the update.

Congratulations, you've discovered you're a pleb with shit taste.

You must just not like strategy games, either 4x or tactical/battlefield games. The TW series offers both and both are pretty solid.

With town building, army management, family lines, guilds, merchants, assassins, priests, princesses, etc... the game is amazing and the stories that you create and play through with your generals and family members can be legendary.

I haven't had a single playthrough where there wasn't some badass that emerged as a powerful hero in my nation, and sometimes they can get ambushed or killed defending an impossible against-the-odds seige, and the shit is epic while also being unscripted.

Get fucked and go play Fallout 4 faggot.

Armies back then were extremely stingy about the war dead. They would take turns to collect the bodies so they could be taken to their native lands for burial, cremated on the spot, or devided amongst social classes and burried alongside eachother in mass graves. Very much like modern wars. The long supply lines would usually be able to transport the corpses in order to be buried or cremated. But normally it depended on who it was who died.

Additional wars within antiquity have been started over the tampering of the fallen.

In my experience I can never win any battles with DeI garrisons unless theyre at least level 3 and have the 5 spears/5 lesser spears/4 archers, and even then with the way DeI works, if they have a single elite unit theyll just grind through all 10 of your infantry and chainrout them. Lost a level 3 garrison to 4 fucking units once, just some tiny infantry blob of elite units and they just smashed everything I had like it was nothing. Cavalry is extremely important for garrisons, and it takes forever to get a single one.

CARTHAGO DELENDA EST!

>In spring 146 BC, the Romans broke through the city wall but they were hard-pressed to take the city. Every building, house and temple had been turned into a stronghold and every Carthaginian had taken up a weapon.

>The Romans were forced to move slowly, capturing the city house by house(even using ladders to cross the rooftops), street by street and fighting each Carthaginian soldier who fought with courage born of despair.

>Eventually after hours upon hours of house-to-house fighting, the Carthaginians surrendered. An estimated 50,000 surviving inhabitants(out of 400,000 within) were sold into slavery. The city was then leveled. The land surrounding Carthage was eventually declared ager publicus (public land), and it was shared between local farmers, and Roman and Italian ones.

Back in the day this was the only way to make it work, but we'd have house rules so that it wouldn't be abused, like you couldn't force a nation to subjugate or give away their territory unless you actually offered something worthwhile in return, most of the fun that came out of Rome 1 was when you had heavy house rules so the only thing limiting the player was the player himself. Gaming communities have changed, less about making your own fun and more about perfecting the list of "fun" activities provided.

We used to have hotseat campaigns where we'd play like 5-10 turns, save, post the save, and then let someone else take over so it would be a community effort much like a consul shifting every few years, and everyone would make a big post after they were done with dozens of screenshots each and a whole mess of text describing them.

The roleplaying got really deep, this happened mostly on Total War Heaven but TWC had some hotseat campaigns too I believe.

Funny how as the technology meant to bring us closer improves, the will to actually make those connections dwindles.
>>
>>122128267
Speaking of house rules, what are some that you guys use? I asked before but only got one or two responses.

would you guys want to do a hotseat campaign
>>
>>122129497
Well for example, here's an autist's guide to playing the most autistic Rome EB campaign possible.

http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?101787-Quintus-Sertorius-Guide-to-Conduct-Becoming-of-a-True-Roman-%28Redux-for-EB%29

Here's a discussion of various houserules regarding EB
http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?111657-Your-house-rules-for-EB

note this is all EB, this is because if you're going to do autism rules, you might as well play autism simulator.

As far as a modern hotseat campaign, good luck in this environment. I doubt we could get enough people together, maybe in a few weeks when people start posting campaigns more and we can actually regain that board culture after the /his/ fags migrate.
>>
Are empire or napoleon worth playing?
>>
>>122128267
>less about making your own fun
Not sure where you're going with that - you still had to mod or cheat to make things happen your way. Nothing changed in this regard, and most people would've been entirely dependent on what the game provided, same as now.
>>
>>122130294
Empire is worth it for the disappointment - what it could've been versus what it is.

Napoleon is amazing, if a bit lacking in campaign scope.
>>
>>122130479
What's changed is the people, the community that actually plays these games.

People used to play Rome/Medieval II for years, through multiple releases, and there were no achievements or anything. Just people doing new campaigns and finding fun ways to mix it up. I guess it helped that you could post your campaign and get feedback from other people, the fact that there was a thriving campaign-posting community.

I mean, how many times have people posted about achievements in this thread? WHO GIVES A FUCK about those achievements, that's the attitude everyone had in 2005, it was just do what was fun until you couldn't think of any more ways to make it fun. How many of you-and don't lie-actually make a concerted effort to get those achievements in the new games? Because that's exactly what I take issue with. Games are developed not to be a sandbox for creativity, but as a focused experience arbitrarily attached to arbitrary goals. The reason hotseat campaigns, roleplaying, and house rules have died out is because people expect the game to guide them to fun instead of finding the fun for themselves.

Maybe those people still exist like me, people that have never even looked at the list of achievements and play towards their own unique goals. Maybe they're just overwhelmingly outnumbered by the new type of gamers, idk.

As you can see in this picture of DeI-not sure if they'll still do this in vanilla-if you attack a large army like this when they're on the defensive, you can engage just a small portion of their army while the vast majority of their army maintains formation and doesn't do shit. They'll transfer their missile units towards the center and target your heavy infantry, at which point you move your own missiles up to specifically target their missiles. If you're in a deep formation like this roman formation shown, then your flanks will be easily defended as you push in this tiny portion of their line. If you keep pushing, you split the army in two, and both sides have to converge towards the center, which you can then meet with your reserves. That split also allows your cavalry the ability to break through, which is especially useful in DeI when their line is so huge that it's not conceivable to go all the way around without attracting a reserve to stop you.

oh my bad, I read "defensive mode" as just defending in a field battle.

As far as forts are concerned, if you have artillery and they don't, then they'll all sally in a big blob as soon as the match starts and immediately rush your artillery. Forts are extremely useful post-R2 and they especially force an artillery meta with most of your main armies, or at least a miniature artillery army to follow you, because a single shitty half-stack in defensive position will royally fuck up your conquest plans, it's harder to kill an army in a fort than it is to kill an army defending a capital city, makes no fucking sense but forts are the most powerful defensive formations in r2 and the only efficient way to deal with them is to lure them out with artillery.

if they've got artillery in the fort? Sucks for you.
>>
Idea: instead of researching military improvements have them be reached after fighting a number of battles. You get better at fighting by fighting more battles, and not just 'lets research heavy cavalry doctrine so we can recruit cataphracts in 3 years'. Maybe have all unit types (obviously low tier versions) available from the start. You get better cavalry techs from either fighting or using cavalry-heavy armies, same detail for infantry etc. You should also be able to advance techs by losing battles as well, like learning from mistakes but if you take heavy losses/lose entire armies you regress because of a lack of a skilled training cadre.
This may be stupid, I'm just thinking of ways to make the warfighting system more in-depth.

>>
>>122133709
You should wait for AE attila but R2 is playable with DeI and the supply system update was autism/10, this will be added to AE as well.
>>
>>122133695
DeI has a system sort of like this in that as military reforms occur, you can upgrade lesser units into better ones with the same experience, so your silver hastati become silver legionaries and so forth. As far as the battles themselves deciding this, theres nothing like that.
>>
>>122134348
I basically mean you don't 'research' military improvements, they come along as you fight more battles because your command structure develops/training methods improve/army gets more experienced. This should depend on what sort of enemy you fight and what sort of army you choose to field. So if you fight horsefuckers you develop better knowledge of cavalry warfare and if you fight Romans you get better knowledge of heavy infantry combat. On the flip side, the more cavalry you use in battle the better you get, and so on.
>>
>>122135096
yeah, the system we have is opposite, where you get experience and have to manually choose what your army is going to specialize in. For instance, with a hellenic army, I would specialize in cavalry charge army traditions so that my hammer is at it's maximum power. I had to manually set up those traits but I was able to specialize my army and roleplay as if they were getting better at it because it had been the key to their success. Sure, the games automatically assign traits based on what happens in battles for characters and so forth, but for it to automatically assign army traditions and equipment evolution as you're suggesting, that's a unique approach. I could see it becoming invasive if an army transforms into something you don't want it to, the system they have in DeI now almost allows for what you want, you just have to set it all up yourself.

THIS TIME ON PONTOS

Nikomedeia is captured from Sardes-satrapy of the seleucid empire- in a hilarious military landslide, as their entire armed forces are decisively defeated at sea by my fleet of firepot throwers and supply ships, leaving the city virtually undefended and easily taken. Map autism is satisfied.

The Seleucids are initially pissed, and refuse to accept peace. The germans likewise sense weakness and end their trade agreement-age old sign of "I'm about to attack" so who knows. I march my army down to Syria and send my fleet to blockade Antiocheia. Like the keks they are, they accept peace terms after a single turn of hardship, allowing me to renew my conquest of Thracia.

I'm making absolute mad dosh. The black sea trade ain't nothing to fuck with. I've got 40,000k in the bank and I'm making over 12k a turn, and this is with taxes at the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM, so I've been soaking in that delicious growth the entire time. This region has proven to be extremely profitable, I've invested heavily in garrisons so even my smallest territories have 2700ish garrisons, which so far has warded off any would-be attackers. With all of my settlements at level 3 and growth at crazy-high rates, I've made the most of the territories I have with huge investment in that regard, and I've only needed two armies and a fleet, the latter of which was a recent addition that has given me valuable diplomatic pressure.

It seems a war with Rome is inevitable. Maybe I can get the greeks and thracians to side with me, I'd rather just push right through to illyria and into italy with hellenics as my allies, considering Pontos gets a diplomatic bonus with them.

As always, these campaigns are the most fun with community input. Feel free to offer suggestions.

We don't know. My guess is that the nobles were exclusively chinky and the grunts were a mix of kebaby and chinky, just by virtue of the basic rule held standard at this point -- population replacement doesn't happen, it's cultural conversion. As the hordes moved West, they would get more Turkic and possibly Iranic and proto-Slavic to make up for losses to the core tribe. Attila is rumored to have been half-Gothic, so he was the first incarnation of Saint Elliot the Edgy

>>122135096
Thats hard to do though, no strat game has implemented this kind of research system.
One, its passive
Two, nobody knows how research irl actually works. Before the time of applied sciences new technology was basically in the hands of artisans, thinkers and generals, but the spread of that tech over geography was based on royal commission or traders.
Tech should be in the hands of agents and generals imo.
Generals who gain stars gain tech related to their combats
Civil advancement needs a new agency, but is generally advanced by infrastructure development and investment.
Then theres diplomacy, long relations should exchange tech
Devolping trade should advance your research as well, but only from the people you trade with

The Roman situation in Hellas is deceptively weak, their satrapy, Dalmatae, does the heavy-lifting in Illyria and Macedonia; I've seen their armies safely pass through Roman lands and attack several thracian and macedonian settlements. Roman forces in the area have been scarce, as they're likely occupied elsewhere, but I can't discount Rome's ability to muster a force from Italy and sail into Greece, naval superiority will be key to any prolonged success in this war.

>strong warrior ethic not present in farming societies
the Romans and Greeks would disagree
>>
>>122170516
Why does any animal migrate? Competition gets stiff and they have to find free pastures, or competition isn't stiff enough and they expand.
>>
>>122170530
so a Warhammer TW tier game where they perhaps announce that they'll make 3 games in the ancient era?

>>122170687
yeah but do we know why? Did a stronger tribe drive them out? I've heard theories of Proto mongols driving them westwards
or did a great leader just decide it's time to fuck all of Europe?
>>
>>122170645
That a different warrior ethic, one of cooperative communal civil defence not based on tribes. They fought on foot, not horseback, and only conscipted as part of their civic duty.
Obviously all societies have military culture, but civil societies dont have a personal warrior code the way tribes do
>>
>>122170757
Attila is the one who turned them into an empire, before they were a powerful confederation that fucked around but were too powerful to really be fucked with by anyone else. Attila wanted to fuck shit up, so he unified the tribes and moved west.
>>
>>122170757
Hard to say, its possible that they simply achieved a critical mass and decided to start wrecking shit cos thats what horse people do.
Like the muslims, before muhammed unified them they were fucking around in the desert, and then suddenly they wrecked everyones shit all the way to france
>>
>>122171053
>civil societies dont have a personal warrior code
Didn't the greeks have that? Look at their myths, Acilles, Hector, Oddyseus etc
Also do you not count Bar bars as farmer societies because they had warrior cultures had they not? or do you see them more as nomads without horses?
>>
>>122171549
Im not sure thats a personal warrior code. They had their heroes and legends of course
I think berbers werent nomadic? Or semi nomadic? They were agriculturalists for sure
>>
>>122171992
yeah I mean Greeks before the Persian wars seemed to value individual bravery and warrior skill

>I think berbers werent nomadic?
no I meant bar bar as in barbarians. Celts and germanics
>>
>>122172191
warrior code and warrior legends are different entirely.
the greek and persian tradition is literary, and those epics are about humanistic achievement in relation to the gods. Although the heroes were themselves great warriors, the message is not a militaristic one

I dont think germanics were nomadic pastorialists, just uncivilised

So I just started watching HBO's Rome. Is it normal I'm hearing Total War sound effects from time to time? Not even battle sounds but ambient sounds like the sound for squalor or when the soldiers are marching. I am certain I'm not imagining things.

I want to play Rome 2. Not played since early 2014 and got gifted all the DLC recently.

I now see there are 17 major patches and some great mods.

What do? Vanilla or modded? What faction?

It was part of a series of tests to see how well a military force could capture an area after a nuclear detonation, with the psychological shock from it and the destruction of military equipment in the blast radius
Beyond that there's a vacuum of information, which leans heavy to suspect the soldiers were guinea pigs uninformed about the effects of radiation
>>
>>122195408
