You can just use that word to fit your agenda since the game doesn't get any patches. Obviously wavedashing was a glitch if they removed it in brawl (and you can't say it's not possible to wavedash in brawl due to the engine, because project M brought it back) and the same can be said for l-cancelling. Just because it was in 64 doesn't mean the devs were aware or knew a fix for it in time for melee, it's not like 64 was even a big game or had competitive players.

god you are so dumb. 64 had a competitive scene. one of the early greats of melee was originally a 64-only player who was convinced to switch games for a while. z-cancelling was deliberately fucking built into the game- they even had a hint for it on one of their promotional sites. i can't believe you seriously believe that they didn't know about it.

and no, i'm not twisting words around, you are. wavedashing is just part of how the physics engine works. nothing is going wrong with the game's programming when it happens. when you airdodge into the ground, it cancels the airdodge and you don't lose momentum. that's simply how the game works. maybe they didn't understand how important it is, but then capcom created combos in pretty much the same way- leaving something in the game even when they didnt fully understand how it would develop strategically. this is normal in many games.

the game got 3 patches and none of them altered wavedashing or l-cancelling in any way. in fact, they made some pretty astute, small balance decisions affecting high level play- nerfing the top tiers, mostly.

wavedashing and l-cancelling were not removed from brawl because they were not intended in melee, but because they were not intended in brawl. they didn't like the way melee developed competitively and sought to deliberately dumb the game down in order to give newer players a stronger chance at winning. this has also happened in real fighters; just look at the gameplay changes between st, third strike and then sf4.

How necessary is it to get a fightstick if I want to try to get into street fighter? I have trouble doing some of Ryu's commands in Smash Bros. using the GameCube's joystick (specifically the firey hadouken). If I was playing Street Fighter with a PlayStation controller would I have similar issues?

I've always felt so weird when people talk about matchups. I've played F-Ciel for like 2 and a half years and I could hardly tell you which matchups are good and which are bad for her. Maybe it's because she's a pretty balanced character that doesn't rely on one gimmick that can make her or break her, but in general I feel like outside some pretty obvious cases like 7-3 or higher matchups where it's just evident one character has a really hard time... I don't know, some people seem adamant about how this matchup is 6-4 rather than 5-5 but like

1) who are you, Daigo? Talking about matchups starts from the assumption that you have perfected your character's gameplan and know exactly everything he/she can do.
2) Are you fighting against Daigo? Because you may have beat up that pretty good E.Ryu online a lot, but for how good he is, he certainly is not the best.

Even basing yourself on footage of top players is not really hard proof. Even pros can not know every matchup perfectly (see bonchan vs louffy at evo). And perceived matchups/tiers can and do change with time as people figure out more stuff.

That's why whenever I see someone like LOL IF U DON'T THINK X MATCHUP IS 5.5-4.5 U'RE A SCRUB I just feel like scratching my head.

2bh in melty the roster is x3 to like 93, so you're not going to get proper matchup data per moon. theres just not enough players to play every fucking moon. blazblue is starting to have a similar lack of matchup data problem thanks to the increasing roster. ac+r had that issue too at the end.

MB seems a bit like KOF to me in that the game plays mostly based around its very solid universal system mechanics. Games like this don't tend to create strongly polarizing matchups because every character has a similar solid base of tools to work with.

In my opinion matchups in melty come down to very simple stuff really.
If your character has a ground poke that works as a good antiair against your opponents approach you got an advantage.
If you got character specific ways to escape the pressure some characters apply on you, you have an advantage.
If you have a jumpin that beats or at least clashes a lot against your opponents antiairs, you force him to shield against you, which is again, an advantage.
Like for example, C-Warachia has an advantage against characters that are used to having heat safe mixups but don't against him.
He also excels against immobile characters like Nero thanks to his strong pokes.
He is shit against characters that still have heat safe mixups and pressure even against him because that's really his only defensive tool.
He also sucks against characters that have safe specials that go through his slow pokes, such as Ries.
