I'm past chapter 8, finally. Chapter 6 was surprisingly okay, although still tough. 7 was a nightmare because most of these guys are incompetent, and I managed to get through 8 with some luck. Donny's time will finally come soon. Vaike is still solid, Ricken sucks ass and so does Virion. I hope I can turn them around soon.

I had an issue. MU was at level 20, I didn't want him hogging all the enemies. I actually saved myself from losing on chapter 6 by using a Rescue Staff on Emm. Lots of close calls there. I have an Energy Drop and a Skill Book right now, but I'm not sure who deserves what. Vaike is surprisingly really skilled, I never expected that from an axe user.

You could have tried giving Chrom some xp with Fred paired behind him and done the same thing. Usually the worst thing I have to worry about in 6 is making sure no thieves open the door to Emms room since Lucina usually dies somewhat fast. Panne is somewhat helpful in it, especially if I have Gaius paired behind her.

The issue is my Chrom hasn't been used much. He's level 6. For chapter 6, the thieves are a problem. So I had MU take the left side, Fred tank the middle, and Vaike hold off the right with some help. But Fred couldn't hold off the middle forever, and Vaike had a bit of trouble with the thief, so I used Rescue. Everything ended up working out though.

I personally it's because they had a lot more goofy supports then the serious ones. There is a reason why most people liked the same gender supports as most of them were focused on character development and they were more engaged in their conversations.

Previous FE supports were slightly more serious but at the same time, it was also pretty cut and dry for some characters were most of them were don't worry I got your back or we're friends we'll sort it out carbon copies. Judging by the perception of the community, most of them prefer the more serious ones then the non serious conversations.

I've actually used Berserker Vaike on Lunatic before, so I'm a bit glad I got him. His biggest issue is magic, since it demolishes him. But he performs decently against physical stuff, he's hard to hit. Plus second sealing makes him gain experience super fast until around level 10, when he can promote. Never tried Hero.

They probably decided on a support system to accommodate the same eugenics system FE4 had well before realizing how much they need to write to accommodate it, so they probably wrote a handful of supports seriously and then half-assed the other dozen or so to be about chasing squirrels or some other stupid shit. It's probably why the good supports really stand out too.

In most of the games it feels like gameplay was more of a focus, which is why characters had a limited support pool (or in the case of RD and earlier games didn't have actual convos past Hello. Watch your back in this battle!).

...but then again the gameplay in Awakening wasn't any great shakes either and clearly rushed/lazy in parts too really so I dunno.
