What monsters are you comfortable with? I use Zinogre for everything, personally, because I've fought hundreds of them, and I feel like they're a good mix of slow and fast attacks. Even if a monster's "good" for practicing against, however, it might not be good for you to practice against, if you're not familiar with them.

My suggestions, if you have nothing else, would be the Raths, Zinogre, and maybe Brachy.

With freeform combos, moves with hitboxes that tend to the side or very high or very low, which of two moves each button produces depending on the move you used last and your recitals and encores having several options based on where you are in a combo and what direction you're holding each with different lengths, repositioning and number of hits, and stringing all of this together to juggle several buffs to keep up, HH's moveset is far more complex than most weapons', and that's before considering things like motion, exhaust and KO values. Meanwhile you don't even need to memorise songs, just keep them written down off to the side and glance at them while you're locked in an animation. After playing each a few times they should be ingrained in your memory anyway.

A weapon doesn't have to be complicated or have a steep learning curve to be good. The HBG is incredibly simple, and that's precisely one of the reason why it IS so effective.

I suppose you could make an argument regarding weakpoints, but that applies to every weapon at some point, so it's not really a point just in HBG's favor.

But it's not. It's the ranged equivalent of, "Hit the Monster, Don't Get Hit". Just like GS, once you know the fight, you can HBG it. Like I said, there's four buttons to memorize.

For contrast, throw someone with absolutely ZERO experience into a Diablos fight, arguably the easiest monster to use CB against, and see how well they do. Without a proper knowledge of guard points, shield charging, and what moves do what when you press what button, they're gonna cart quicker than you can imagine. Give them an HBG, and they'll do far, far better almost every time.

As someone that doesn't use either weapon often, I find CB way easier than HBG. Not that guy, just a third party chiming in. CB is fucking effortless to use, you don't even have to worry about positioning. In fact I'd go so far as to say that if you dumped someone who knew nothing about the weapon into a diablos fight their biggest mistakes would be trying to worry about positioning and not knowing they can guardpoint. If you gave each a five minute rundown of what each weapon is capable of and what each button does beforehand I'm pretty sure the CB would perform much better than the HBG.

Okay, but that doesn't actually translate into how much skill it takes to pick up each weapon and to get competent with it. HBG is SIMPLE, but it is also HARDER and has a steeper learning curve. CB has a higher barrier of entry, but that's not really a big deal; No weapon has a barrier of entry that should take more than five minutes to overcome. The biggest part of CB's barrier of entry is knowing to charge your phials so you don't bounce. You don't need its whole moveset in detail to learn how to use it, you just need to know how to charge your shit, what guardpoints are and how to do the AED.

My opinion, CB is much more complicated than HBG.
What's difficult about playing HBG (solo) is finding proper windows to reload/sheathe and the fragility of your hunter.
In a group HBG is significantly easier on you since you have 3 meat shields running about tripping the monster.

Please note that while HBG is simple at its core, some of the lesser known mechanics are still very important, like what ammos cause higher recoil and critical distance.

Meals don't apply in the Arena. You can only use preset items. The goal isn't just to kill the monster, it's to kill the monster in a certain amount of time with what you're given. The only time I ever really count stagger limits is when using Normal shots. Honestly I wish they added more fun things to play around with like imagine Normal 3 having a max of 4 shot ricochet but could bounce off the ground and environment. That would make for some fun.

Anyway I like Kushala for glaive. Looks nice, and since it doesn't have a shield and does have long animation locks that mean canceling as soon as you can and then having a longer evasion window is often helpful if not crucial, the evasion skills help even more than on most weapons.

I just took the pictures from ASS, no side or rear shots available. Agna's helm and the wings are the only things that look noticeably different from the side, the helm looks like some Roman shit and the wings are actually offset from each other. It's just Guard+2/Awaken/Razor Sharp/Crit+2. Not great but it still outdamages the other craftable para lances most of the time even without Ch+2/HB. My original plan was to have Ruthlessness instead of Crit Eye for the negative affinity negation but the chucklefucks at Capcom decided only gunners should get Ruthlessness relics. I could probably (easily) get better skills but I wanted something that matched the color of the Shah lance.

Does the Lagi SnS have any niche? Seems like Rajang is the most useful if the monster is weak to raw but also takes decent thunder, and the Kirin one is good against monsters that are really weak to thunder but are more resistant to raw. Lagi kinda falls in the middle so I'm wondering if it has any practical use?

No way with CQ's because you can only give beshackled weapons/armor, not actual equipment. Plus you'd need the quest to have a bias (so a GQ) otherwise they turn into "bad items" or something.

Save editing yeah. I bought an actual powersave but its somewhat limited in what it can do. You'd probably need something even more complicated than that to generate relics from scratch. But you'll have to find something yourself. I can't help ya.

Well, it has better white and purple sharpness than Rajang and better purple than Kirin, and sharpness is a major concern with SnS. It also has a slot over Rajang, though it's lacking some defence on Kirin. It's worth noting that barely anything actually takes significant damage from any element, and elemental is usually worth half to two thirds as much as raw, so even ignoring that a given element is circumstantial and on fast weapons like SnS elemental is often not as valuable as raw- Probably why the kirin sword also has defence up, two slots and a shitload of white sharpness, which are all nifty.

The lagi sword at a glance looks to me to be just better than the rajang sword for what you described for it, honestly, between the better sharpness and the extra slot. It sacrifices some damage, sure, but given how fast SnS sheds sharpness lagi will likely come out ahead in the long run. Besides, for monsters that where you'd sacrifice that much elemental for raw, you should probably just go for reigning grissword and not worry about the thunder. It has a slot, fantastic white sharpness, 20% affinity, massive raw and blast you can awaken if you have easy access to that skill on your set for even more damage that's fairly consistent regardless of monster. The downside is that it looks like fresh ass.

I wish elemental wasn't shafted so hard for whatever reason. It could add a layer, if a small one, of interesting depth to the game, but ultimately, even for the weapons that make the best use of elemental, raw is better by g rank.

Depends on your weapon. Heavy hitters like GS, CB, Hammer benefit from sleep most. Anything that hits fast like SnS, DB, IG, etc. can keep poison up all the time.

I was doing a rough estimate in my head, but before factoring in monster resistances but after everything else (and rounding everything but the average MV down, so it favours raw) neodignis at purple has 108 combined elemental and raw damage while the rajang club has 103; But after factoring in that most resistances are about twice as high for elemental, and as such halving the elemental damage, that's 88 to 88, so they're tied.
