Fate is just a worse Dies Irae with mediocre character writing, atrocious pacing and a story that doesn't have any deeper meaning. Sure, the pacing was all over the place in Umineko Chiru as well, but at least it did a decent job of making you care about the characters and gave some interesting insights into the relationship between meaning and truth. Higurashi is still my favorite in terms of enjoyment though.

I read umineko in high school and loved it, revisited it last year up to episode 3 then marathoned all 8 higurashi games to catch up on the overall canon.

They both follow the same formula, really. Both are shounen-style visual novels that start out in a highschool setting. The characters introduced in the beginning of the story figure into the bigger picture. Turns out our protagonist was never the normal person he pretended to be, which is proven time and time again as he goes up against seemingly impossible odds and comes out on top time and time again.

The difference is that the character motivations in dies irae are more fleshed out, the philosophical themes are at least kind of plausible in places, and the battles are written in a way that actually makes the protagonists growth believable for the most part.

a few problems are responsible for that
first, torrents work on a peer-to-peer system and peers can see each other in multiple ways, the main two of which are
1. a tracker web service advertises every peer that connects to it to the other peers
2. distributed hash tables (dht) work by having every client keep track of every other client they can see and distribute this information to new peers
when nyaa went down, the nyaa tracker went with it. this meant that everything fell back to dht (which saved everyone's asses, since without it, we'd have all been fucked), but not everyone USES dht and some people CAN'T use dht for various reasons (usually network-related). so a lot of peers were lost because of that.

Umineko is not a VN, it's a sound novel.

And while the first four episodes are excellent, the last three are garbage I almost regret to have read.
The "revelations" towards the end are not worth reading it. If you enjoy the story along the way, Umineko is fine, but far from "the greatest".

R07 is great at creating a setting and telling a story, but he sucks ass at leading all that to a fulfilling conclusion. It probably didn't help that one of his best buddies died during the production of Umineko.

Clare was a joke for the readers. Riukishy07 betrayed us by showing us Clare instead Yasu directly. To know the truth you have to read through 9 boring chapters of Yasu boring life to get into an idea to what truly Clare is. The bond between Clare and Yasu was never truly explained.

I never actuqally read higanbana or rgd simply because i can't be assed to import them and it's difficult to find a working pirated version of either. the art in RGD really turns me off but I've heard it's good, higanbana seems interesting but I'm worried it'd just be Ange's school life chapters stretched out over an entire SN.

I'm almost not even motivated enough to schlep through another Ryukishi game until it has the WTC namesake on it because what I really, really want is something that ties up the entire canon and kakera fuckery in a satisfying way (which we won't get).

WTC is Rika's story. In 1 and 2 we see her in Hinamizawa, in 3 and 4 we see her as Bernkastel, an antagonist. It was all spread out so well but was never given any closure because the focus was more on leading protagonists and not her as the main character. I just want WTC 5 to finally really explain kakera logic and give Rika some closure. RGD is full of loose cameos and teasers about WTC and I'm just not into being mentally NTR'd like that.

Easily one of my favorite animu and I started reading the Vn after completing it.

I haven't completed the VN series. I got around the 5th Vn where they started to somewhat dispel the myth of Beatrice and really started to layout the history of Uroshima family. I haven't read any of it in about 4 years so I may be wrong about somethings. It was interesting, but I wasn't prepared for that part of the story, so I pretty much dropped it. It's still a great story tho.

You have no fucking clue about the story if you only watched the anime and read part 5, holy shit.
Do yourself a favor and re-read the entire thing from the beginning.

Umineko is a wild ride with some of the best writing of any VN, for sure.

But it is TOUGH to stay committed to when things start going into heavy fantasy. The introduction is such a straight-forward mystery novel, and very high quality in terms of how the scenario is laid out, how the characters and their motives are all explained, you can't help but be disappointed when it becomes about witches firing lazors and summoning monsters.

It's a struggle not to drop it at that point. It seems like they just gave up trying to make a great mystery novel and instead fly straight into the simpler and more comfortable territory of anime-style fantasy. But it's worth carrying on because only later do you realize how essential the fantasy vs mystery thing is to the story.

Unfortunately, the game spends much more time in the realm of fantasy than in the realm of mystery, and that's the game's main weakness. Writing mystery is much more challenging than fantasy, I guess, although it is understandable given that the whole scenario is based on a lack of real information about what happened on the island. Still, it would've been nice if more of the story could've been detectives trying to work out whodunnit, whydunnit, etc., instead of anime witches debating about abstract philosophical principles for 20 hours.
