Now that the year has settled, how did you all find 2016?

Obvious /u/ tentpoles for 2016:
>Koukaku no Pandora
>Love Live Sunshine
>New Game
>Shuumatsu no Izetta
>Flip Flappers

Quasi-shout-out to some other stuff that had their moments but didn't quite make the shortlist like Brave Witches, Vivid Strike, etc.

Probably forgetting some other stuff too.

Haven't watched Izetta yet because I want to know something first.
How did it end? I don't mean in detail, but was it good? Was it /u/? Was it kinda-sorta-/u/?
Since it's in your list of /u/ shows 2016 I guess there were no political marriages in the end.

Hey guys.
We'll start our biannual roster polls on 2nd of January, at 7PM GMT. We'll do it in the usual 4 phase format, with 3 polls which will be open for 48h each, and a 48h nomination period. Full schedule and all the details will be posted along with the first poll. Just a heads up for now.

As another anon who waits until ending spoilers to decide: It is probably worth watching if you want /u/ moments but the ending spoilers made me decide against watching it because the ending sounded very unsatisfying with regards to the main "couple" being happy together due to a last minute events and plot reasons.
>>

>>2228459
Izetta is great and worth it. It's one of the best anime of the season.
>>
>>2228566
Like I said I only read spoilers so forgive me if I'm wrong but didn't one of them end in a wheelchair with no movement shown or face shot to prove she was ok and the other one can't always be with her because of political reasons? It hardly sounded happy. Again, based on what I read.
>>
>>2228569
There was movement, and the face was shown in other picture. And you can easily assume they see each other everyday, nothing says otherwise.
>>
>>2228569
Not really, although not really wrong either.
She does end on a wheelchair, but, although they don't show her face, you can clearly see her moving her head. There's no way to interpret it another way.
The ending scene is the other one coming to visit her. The anime doesn't say if she'll go live with her or she's just visiting her, but they're still in touch with each other.

Seriously, you consider a couple where one of the two work on another city a unhappy couple?

She being alive is even a deus ex machina. It's kinda of a forced happy end.

They built a cabin on the lake where they first met as children. Fine was playing around there alone as a kid so it's fairly close to her castle.

Also she was already in the wheelchair because of the past accident. The extra plot convenient magic helped her walk for the last few episodes.

Her face is fine you see her in a photograph. The reason why both Fine's and Izetta's faces are obscured in the end is because it's supposed to be secretive. The world believes Izetta died. Bam, spoilers.
>>
>>2228569

Oh yeah, she's shown on that photo smiling that was clearly taken after the end. So yeah..

You grimderp edgefag. I bet you find issues with Chikane resurrecting in the end.

Also it was great, without Yoshino's infamous retardation. If you're a fan of Princess/Knight dynamics in yuri and girls being completely devoted and sacrificial to their girlfriends then it delivers in spades. It even shut down the need for political marriages, heirs, side het and it even the past het. The moonlight date was especially beautiful. Sure it's cliched but everything worked together nicely.
>>
>>2228596
It was pretty much Yoshino's best work.
I hope he realizes that, because I don't really hate his writing...but he likes to be a retard sometimes.
>>
>>2228596
I didn't want her to die, you fucking retard. I wanted them to show/explain HOW THE FUCK she survived that and got away with only not being able to walk. Nope, absolutely nothing. She just did. Some great writing here.
It wasn't great, it was full of asspulls and plot conveniences, which were kinda acceptable at first but then went full retard starting with the end of 8th episode. At that point I stopped caring.
While we're at it, Madoka's third movie also sucked.

Me too. It really feels neat and coherent. No character outstays their welcome and they all fulfill their roles accordingly. Every plot point gets foreshadowed and later utilized in a tidy manner as well. Maybe I'm also a bit biased because I love alternate-history WW2 settings.

No need for it to be in the rifle. The purpose of the stone was literally to store magic, so even if she shot the rest to Pluto, there's no reason she couldn't have saved a little for the landing.

But you're right, the last time she ran out of magic on to the rifle (fighting Sophie), it didn't immediately drop to the floor, it acted more like a plane running out of fuel, however little sense that makes aerodynamically.

Reading Gamma was weird. Even though I absolutely loved it.
It seems like Ogino's two interests should be mutually exclusive but it managed not to be. Western Superheroes are almost always about men. But then it's also about lesbians. And not just one token paring, but pretty much every major female introduced ends up in a lesbian relationship. All the male heroes are just there being male heroes.

I'd like to see a serialization that's about female heroes more prominently. I mean, I know Ogino was doing obvious homages to Marvel with many of the designs and scenes. But I'd like to see a more female heavy superhero story instead of them being the minority.
>>
>>2229404
>Western Superheroes
Were they? They looked like Tokufags to me. He posts about Kamen Rider and other mecha stuff on his twitter.
>>
>>2229378
It's just especially the way their hair is done just looks so awful to me, kinda like the original series except at least that one had the excuse of it being somewhat contemporary for the time when on a budget. The eyes also makes it look old but not in a terrible way like the hair for me. I mean white girl's bangs are uuugh.
>>
>>2229405
He mentioned that he cried in the theatre while watching Spider Man 3 so I assume hes a fan of western super heroes.
>>
>>2229405
Well, both.
Some were obviously Marvel inspired. He even did an obvious play on the "Hulk, smash" scene in the first Avengers movie with Captain Japan saying. "Bull, go wild."
He had Hornet, with obvious designs from Spiderman.
Captain Japan, obviously Captain America
The Iron Man chick, forgot her name. But the armor was obvious.
The Wild Bull guy, Hulk based.
And in the afterwords of Gamma he lists Marvel movies and Kaiju movies as some of his favorites of all time. With his favorite Superhero movie being Spiderman 3 (and as an extension, the Raimi Spiderman Trilogy as whole)
I'm not doubting he's also a Tokufag. But he's so clearly into western superheroes too.

I thought most people considered Spider-Man 3 the worst of the trilogy.

Mighty Blow and Lostman are Superman homages with some Saiyan/Goku mixed in for Mighty Blow, and Lostman is basically the weeb version of Superman: Secret Identity.

Hornetman is an obvious shoutout to Spider-Man.

What are your top 5 or 10 OTPs of 2016?

My top 5 would be:

1. Fine/Izetta
2. Ren/Hibiki
3. Maihime/Hotaru
4. Rin/Kou
5. Nene/Clarin
>>
>>2229499
Don't give me that bullshit now. There's always a limit to the acceptable amount of suspension of disbelief required, depending on the setting. Izetta went way over it. It had magic to cover up for possible subtle inconsistencies. Instead, it pushed a huge inconsistency right into your face AND made sure they can't cover it with magic because suddenly it's science. There's nothing to back that bullshit up.
And plot conveniences can only chained so much. When some literally who in ep8 went to pick up the exact required items and slipped away easily, it just stopped being tolerable.

Characters were killed off for shock value. Izetta survived just because, disposable witch clones with a standard smug villain personality that's only good for pissing you off, magic missile, and more stupid shit. The heavy subtext was nice but that's about it. If the rest was simply generic or something, sure, I wouldn't mind. But it tried to be smart and came off as completely retarded.
>>
>>2229512
You're way madder than you should be at a silly anime plot that it never tried to took itself seriously.

Just watch anime for the yuri like the rest of this board does. Caring about anything else just makes you unhappier.
>>
>>2229512
Every anime that's not a slice of life is shitty on logic. There's some really rare exceptions, but still...

I even would just stop watching anime one time because of that. Yuri was what made me start back. I think that's why I drop pretty much everything that's not yuri related.
>>
>>2229512
It's people who complain about this stuff that seem to me to be guilty of trying to be smart when they're actually being retarded about what they look for in writing.

If the writer is aware they can't actually write for shit, maybe it's better to make sure there's solid ground for whatever nonsensical mess you're going come up with instead of a seemingly grounded historical setting, for fuck's sake.
>Just watch anime for the yuri like the rest of this board does. Caring about anything else just makes you unhappier.
Yeah, great, and watching shitty shows just for the "yuri" or actual lack thereof because everyone's afraid of going further than subtext will surely make me happy, right.
>>2229524
What the fuck should I be looking for, tell me? Most of the time I'm satisfied even with explanations I have to make up myself as long as the setting or the events somewhat support them, or at least balance out. Here? Absolute one-sides horseshit with nothing to keep it together. Literally nothing works. No excuses.
>>2229533
Alternate but history nevertheless. I was hardly different at first. There was no magical hybrid tech of any kind before the show's events, and cloning was supposedly 100% science.

Go fuck yourselves.

>>2229539
>What the fuck should I be looking for, tell me?Can you not even understand what there is to enjoy in writing? You just care about things like how realistic it is?
>>
>>2229545
Good as in actually high quality? Or what? Would you be satisfied if I named a SoL? Because I don't recall anything very memorable but I did have fun with plenty others.
But I think I know what to give you. Regalia. I can't say it was all that good. It also had plenty of similar bullshit. With the main difference being that it had something to fall back on. There was even that god-like presence involved. Plenty of valid excuses to make.
>>
>>2229564
No, SoL doesn't count. I actually think SoL are the best writing japanese ever make, but it's hard to fuck those up (although it's possible).

But now I really think you're just nitpicking for some reason. Regalia to me had a ever bigger bullshit of a plot than Izetta. You can't really say: "there's a god there, so it doesn't need to make sense".
It doesn't even makes sense on the things outside of the main plot, like leaving a empress walking alone through the city with no escort at all.

I didn't hate it and just ignore those things, but there...
I thought the final episodes were too boring focusing on bullshit I don't give a shit about, though.
>>
>>2229539
I don't even know why you bring that point when this anime probably has the most romantic yuri scene of the year, your point is irrelevant.

Just be happy that they survived and are happy together. Regardless of anything in the plot.

>Alternate but history nevertheless.
>but history nevertheless
No anon, it quite literally isn't history. Don't you get the point of this trope? It's its own setting taking aesthetics and some events from real history to spice it up. It's alternative to make it even easier to suspend your disbelief. The events, tech, people and countries are meant to be disconnected.

Complaining why they had magical cloning memory transfusions, PTRD-41, Lahti L-39 and He-112 in THEIR UNIVERSE'S 1940 is like complaining about the German equivalent in Ace Combat being the one producing Russian Su-37 and Su-47 fighters in their version of Cold War, years before they were developed in reality. Or hell, why do they have giant, scientifically impossible super weapons.

>You can't really say: "there's a god there, so it doesn't need to make sense".
Oh, but that's way better than "it's alternate history, so it doesn't need to make sense".

Regalia had extensive magic with reality-bending capabilities and based everything on it. There was no long build up consisting of way-too-convenient events (but again, it's not like there were none), and the appearance of that Ex Machina, despite the name, was explained clearly.
Izetta had very basic magic and went with out of place science instead, trying to explain it and failing. Things went perfectly in antagonist's favor (with a few deaths for shock value along the way, none of them mattered), and something still had to be pulled out of the ass just so there was something that could actually go against the all-powerful witch. And what was it? A cloned witch, of course. Not some power-draining weapon which would still make little sense but at least not to the same extent. Nope, they just digged up and revived a witch. Great.

>>2229589
I get it yes. But I'm telling you, there's only so much suspension plausible until it goes out of hand. It wasn't just some hints of similar aesthetic, many things were too close to reality to disconnect it completely. No matter how you spin it, cloning just doesn't fit in here. You can't always go with "it's not real so I do what I want" unless you're making something like Teekyuu.

No, that would be an excuse if it was actually trying to be faithful to real world WW2. It's not.
You're simply not comprehending the point of an alternate-universe/history as a narrative choice.

The clones in the show were empty, barely functioning husks with short lifespans. Not really that advanced.

The only reason why one was even functional is because it sucked Izetta's blood. That's one of the magic-tech hybrid parts.

So I started playing Shadowverse last month and a lot of their cards are Rise of Bahamut characters because same developer. Yesterday a new expansion pack was released and I pulled Grea and Anne, the two would-have-been MCs of Manaria Friends.

Almost all the heroes in Gamma are parodies, both western and eastern. Anon already listed the obvious western ones, but I'm sure everyone can tell that Mika is Madoka while Lily Cure is Precure.

Speaking of Gamma, I just found out that Miyuki and Yuri did have sex (Ogino Jun drew 2 fanarts for them). Blew my mind, since I thought the incest teasing was only a gag. I wonder how Hikari and Marina would react if they ever find that out.

Haremshit is pretty popular in Japan too. Do you think they keep making all those generic series for the sake of west fans? They just happen to love that shit.

>>
>>2231354
>at least some interesting characters
let me guess, they're the haremette since the guy are usually generic as fug or just plain gary stu
>>
>>2231354
A lot of writers aren't even trying anymore.
Don't forget Gakusen Toshi Asterisk and Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry are basically the same and even have the exact same opening scenes of guy walking in on heroine changing, her trying to kill him, and then her suddenly being in love with him with almost no reason.

Honestly, a yuri harem could put in even a fraction of the effort and be incredible m.
>>
>>2231354
It's more like 1/10 harems have yuri subtext / baiting strong enough between some of the clear non-winners, since it's so rare for harem works to actually have a harem ending in the first place.
>>
>>2231371

>>
>>2231325

Actually, most of those just exist to sell LN, since they usually have the same publisher. That's kind how we got a lot of MTK shows, even though a lot of them flop.
And actually more MTK are success than harem shows.

That's where I say japan can be better than west, since west see those as "moeshit anime" and treat it like trash. Hell, west does that for every all girls cast show that's not edgy.

I know ANN is shit, but they reflect well how west mentality works. I went to their "best characters of 2016" and they're all male characters, except for one Keijo's girl (seriously, this is the show where they find a good female character?). And they can't even say male characters are better written when the first one on the list is the Re:Zero's protagonist.

So yeah, I like anime, but hell, I hate anime fans.

>>2231371
Worst part is that they both seem to be popular for some reason. Even though they are extremely cookie cutter.

>>2231373
I think those are the worst ones since they treat the yuri subtext as something to distract those particular characters for a while by lusting over themselves instead of lusting over the male MC.
>>
>>2231398
They're shitty and their critics are a joke (they don't even do research and post a lot of bullshit in their analysis). But they are a good way to show how the west anime fans are, since it's one of the biggest anime related sites.

I mean, MAL is even worse.
>>
>>2231410
Yeah, it's bad, and definitely baiting, because a lot of the time it's just thrown in with very little development and no resolution in the end (there are exceptions to this, but they are very few in number). But it's still tangentially /u/, and people will eat up shit if it's /u/. at least, I know I have, especially in drier seasons...
>>
>>2231296
>>2231298
Generally whatever is big in Japan at the moment will be big here too, look at the inexplicable popularity of SAO, Gate, and Re:Zero. Probably just an effect of people buying into the hype.

Also, notice in recent year the decline of original anime. In the past people made manga adaptations of popular anime. Now almost everything you see is an adaptation of a manga, novel, or game. Same thing is happening with the decline of originality in Hollywood: movies and anime are both costing more and more money to make so studios go with tested formulas instead of taking risks.

Keijo characters are surprisingly well developed for a T&A show. The show itself is tasteful and well thought shonen, with tactics, strategies and insane special abilities all over the place, which, again, is surprising for a T&A show.

Alright then, time to start.

Here's a pastebin with a bunch of useful links - FAQ, our piratepad, the first poll and our discord channel.
http://pastebin.com/ysGznz41

We're in the middle of picking our new roster for the upcoming Winter Cup. You can check out our current roster here:
http://implyingrigged.info/wiki//u/_roster

The piratepad has a more detailed description of the polling process, for those of you who might need it. It's the same system as usual so if you've done this before you should feel right at home.
This time around we included a small quiz in the poll, please do your best to answer it!

The polling schedule is as follows:
- Monday the 2nd, 7PM GMT: the first poll determines whom we remove, and whether we want to demote any medals.
This is probably a good time to mention each poll will be closed after 48h.
- Wednesday the 4th, 7PM GMT: the nomination period - you can name all your ideas for new players, either here, in the piratepad or on disord.
- Friday the 6th, 7PM GMT: second poll. All players suggested in the nomination period will get included in it. Top 5 makes the next phase. Also, we'll have additional medal polls if needed.
- Sunday the 8th, 7PM GMT: second poll closes and we proceed to the third, final poll. It will include the players voted out in the first round and the top 5 from the second poll. Top 5 from this poll will make the team. Also, we'll have additional medal polls if needed.

The boy reveals himself to be Youto, a boy who saw Shiny Chariot’s magic show with Akko when they were children. Akko says she didn’t recognize him because he used to be so small and wore glasses. Youto gives Akko a little attitude before flying away on a broom which annoys Akko because she doesn’t want him thinking he’s better at magic than her. This fires her up and she starts training extra hard everyday so she can become a great witch just like Shiny Chariot.

The first ova was pretty great, just in terms of entertainment value and there was potential for some foeyay there, but the second wasn't as good. I wasn't expecting the next great yuri hope from it or anything, but that does seem particularly disappointing given that the best part of the premise was magical friendship antics.

>>2232549
unfortunately they do. the second movie felt so corny and lame because they were trying to make it "for little girls" (with a really cliched Disney-esque idea of what that means)

maybe the TV series will take a different approach from that or the manga but i'm sure as hell expecting the worst
>>
>>2232559
Who knows, in OVA it was Diana who watched the show like Akko, kinda shame they used the same motive in the manga to pair Akko with some random boy OC, but for now agreed, that manga version was nothing more than cliche shoujo magnet.

But after Luluco and dead yuri in Kiznaiver I'm not holding my breath for LWA, magical close friendship without romance for Akko and Diana is only thing we can hope for, KLK managed to do that too, but if they will add boy school in anime then rather all is lost.

>>
>>2232656
I just think it makes no sense. No way the ones who liked it were little girls.
Also, I said little girls don't like these stupid romance, anyway.
Precure is great.
And part of that is because they don't lose much time on stupid romance. That can really get annoying, even if you aren't watching it for yuri.

I mean, I still like Aikatsu, and the het part are the stupidiest plot for a lot of reason.

So even if I never expected yuri from LWA, I think romance can actually make it worse.
>>
>>2232632
I hate to say this, but Mug actually makes sense.

The anime seems to follow the event of the OVA (or at least as close to as possible). Also Diana's dad is there so safe to say she will be a prominent character. Quite sure there won't be a shoehorned self insert MC anywhere.
